Wow, I just took my amazingly hard calc test, which I studies my butt of for and have a feeling I didn't do so hot.

But now when I get home, my sister informs me that my job called me at the house. So now I'm thinking, what's going on?? Is this something about payroll or maybe even direct deposit or something? But no it turned out not to be.

So I called my work back and they started to inform me that I had been laid off, here were their exact words, "It wasn't so much something that I did, it was just something with the company"! Well, at least I paid my car payment before this.

Man, this is turning out to be one of the worst days od my life, first off, I think I bomb my test which I studied for , and then I get laid off, what next? Car acceident maybe? jeeze.....

I'm just sitting here at my computer sort of shell shocked how such a good day could be followed up by such a bad one, man oh man.

What is everyone else's experiences with getting "laid off."

I got laid off once because of a merger. It was horrible because I knew it was coming for weeks. Luckily I was rehired the same day for another position so I was only technically laid off for 2 hours or so. Good luck.

Sorry to hear that man... Never good to be without work. I'm not working now, trying to get my first semester of school under me before I do.

Just try to keep your head up tasty, everything will be alright. Good luck.

Yeah, I've heard form another person that everything happens for a reason.

That this place was not meant for you, or that you will go on to something else after this that makes sense. Speaking metaphorically, a closed door means you eventually get to open a new one in the future.

I agree with philosophy that everything happens for a reason, it has to right?

I've not been laid off, but have had many, many friends at the software company where I used to work that went through it. I ended up bailing before it happened to me. Most of them were miserable at first, but all in all 95% of them ended up happier and with better jobs.

I will say that it was kind of crappy of your company to lay you off over the phone. At least have the descency to tell you in person. Good luck!

Yes, that's what I thought too, I mean come on seriously. And they said the Friday was technically my last day, they they couldn't tell me for some reason, that's messed up right there.

you're right, at least say it to the person's face.

I've been laid off a few times, mainly when I was doing contract work.

I think the most important thing to accept is that it is what it is, something you can't do anything about... and then just get on with the business of getting on with it.

I've *often* found that things like things end up being blessings in disguise, even if it takes a good amount of time and a healthy dose of hindsight to realize it later.

I got laid off from a nice paying union job a few years ago. They could not get a contract settled, so they laid everyone off. It definitely sucks. Especially for some of the older guys that worked there. The benefits were the best you could get.

I did get a nice severance package though. And if it was not for the lay off, I might of never met my fiance.

Sorry to hear that. I was laid off about a month or so after 9/11. Our company was hit pretty hard during the events of the day (we lost several people in, I believe, the North Tower). It affected us, across the board.

It was tough, at first, being laid off. Luckily, I was able to collect unemployment while I searched for something new. My next job, unfortunately, was probably the worst job I've ever had, and that includes working at Taco Bell during High School and part of College!

Anyway, best of luck...what do you do? Perhaps someone on here may be a connection to your next job.

I havent been laid off, but been through a plant closing and a plant down sizing...After everyone I though it was the worst thing that could have happened to me, Each time, I found another job better than the last. but remember as some of my friends didnt understand a new better job dosnt appear at your door step or do they call ya at home, it takes work and persevering, and dressing up in a shirt & tie for interviews.

Good luck man. I got Laid Off a few years back and the worst thing I did was not get back to ANY job as quickly as possible. Plenty of filler jobs out there - waiting tables, gas stations, etc. It helps not to have your savings take a hit.

Sounds like you are still in school. Don't let this detour your school. Get some income in as quickly as you can.

And make sure you get U/E or do anything you can for a bit to get that if you have to.

The last time I got laid off I was at Leibert and I'd made it thru 2 layoffs before it hit the department I was working in. I was the junior member so off I went. That was the Friday afternoon before my annual 4th July keg party and campout in Hocking Hills.

I called the guy that bought my apartment complex and let him know that things might be tight. I asked if he had a need for a Resident Manager, and he asked what I knew how to do in terms of maintenance and repair.. after we talked, he asked me to meet him Tuesday am after the holiday.. I've been with him ever since.. that was July of 2005. My gas bill for my commute to work is zero dollars I pay a lot less than everyone else.. and for the most part, I am my own boss. Plus, people that move out and buy condos are calling me up wanting me to do work for them cause they know me and they know I can do the work. I give them a discount for passing my name on to others.. and I'm getting referrals from other people that I've done work for.. I'm slowly growing the referral business.. things are pretty good.. I've had to turn down work sometimes just being too busy.

Cheer up.. something will pop up.. network a bit and talk to everyone you know and see whats out there.

That stinks, and it will be tough to move on, but move on you should! I've never been laid off, but I got fired about 5 years ago - new company took over the dealership I had spent about 12 years at..........they walked into my office, told me everyone was going to be fired, but everyone had the opportunity to be re-hired, except me. Then they told me to call someone to take me home. (screw them, I took my demo and told them to go to my house and get it).

Anyway, sat at home and pouted for about a month. Then realized pouting wasn't doing my bank account any good. Got a job at used car place - buy here, pay here - and I hated it. Despised it. 2 months later the business I currently own and run "fell" into my lap. Been doing this for 4 1/2 years and love it. If I hadn't been fired, I'd have never come into this - being fired was the best thing for me even though I didn't know it at the time.

Good luck. It's happened to many, many people. You'll get throught it.

Hey Tasty,
I am sorry to hear about your job situation. I hope that this prayer from my friend Joel Osteen helps you in your time of need....

God is on Your Side

Today's Scripture

"If God is for us, who can be against us" (Romans 8:31)?

Today's Word from Joel and Victoria

As a believer in Jesus and a child of His, God is on your side today! If you haven't thought about it yet today, remember, you are created for greatness. You have the seed of Almighty God inside of you. There is no obstacle that can stop you. There is no disadvantage that can hold you back. You're in the palm of God's hand, and He has equipped and empowered you for everything. When God is on your side, He sets the right people in your path. In fact, He's already released favor into your future. He's planning for you to come in to new seasons of increase. Have you given up on a dream? God is on your side, and He wants to resurrect it. Have you given up on a family member? God is on your side, and He wants to restore that relationship. God is on your side, and He has a plan for victory in every area of your life. Let that sink down into your heart today. Begin to expect His favor. Expect Him to work in your life. Focus on the fact that God has equipped you. He has anointed you. Your best days are still out in front of you! If God is for you, no one can rise against you! As you meditate on this promise, it will become real to you. You will walk in the favor and victory God has in store for you!

A Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, thank You for being on my side today. Thank You for equipping and empowering me to accomplish everything You've called me to. Give me a deeper revelation of Your love for me today so that I can live the abundant life You have prepared for me. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Sucks to get laid off.. happened to me when the company I worked for was taken over by a foriegn company... that was after 15 years... sucked to be me and 150 other middle managers.

Stuff happens.. I got home, told the wife,, then we got in the car and went to dinner...,, Got up the next morning,,, went to the office, went on a sales call,,, did the deal with a customer, got back the office, called the person that laided me off, told them I closed a rather large deal,,, they asked me to stay,,,

I said no.... and the next day I was gone... received a severance package,, and set out to find a new job... by the way, this happened on December 15th.... talk about messing up your holidays... The good news, it took 6 days,, I had a new job.. started a few days after the Holidays... Cool huh?

Keep you chin up....

PS: I got the new job, stole the account I sold the week I was laid off.... Kinda worked out really well for me actually..

Thanks everyone whose had experience with this kind of thing giving me advice, I appreciate it a lot.

For the rest of the day, I pretty much tried to to everything possible to just have fun. I played some online games, read a book, and met friends for lunch. It's hard, but I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, another oppourtunity will come along, I'm sure of it.

Never been laid off, so I can't help you there.

Sucks to hear, but keep your head up, and just stay positive. Don't say things are going to get worse or something else will happen, because if you get in that mindset, they will. Get signed up for unemployment and focus on your studies because that sounds like what will be your future. You'll have some more time to look around for a job, and just start by looking in the paper, going online, and just talking to people. You'd be surprised that by just talking to people and mentioning you're looking for a job that you can find work. Someone you know may work somewhere that's hiring. Your friend may have a parent who's workplace is hiring. Etc, etc. Good luck.

Sorry about the job but you sound young enough to recover. The best part is that you have the best job search weapon at your finger tips, your computer.

In the old days we had to type a resume and put on our best shirt and tie and go door to door and hand them out.

Today you can sit at your computer, in your underware if you want and send resumes to more people in one day than we could in a week.

Just wait till next season, I have heard that for over 40 years!

All I have to say is if the place you worked for doesnt have enough balls to tell you face to face then the hell with them. Im seriuos. Classless on thier part. Good luck in your search. Should be a temp agency around there somewhere. They can find you a job in a day or 2 to hold you over.

Classless is when they let you come into work, then tell you first thing in the morning. I have never been laid off, but I have fired lots of people, and been fired myself. Neither one is any fun.

Oh contrare!
There are several methods of recourse!
Evereything from blackmailing your old boss for having an affair with his sexitary to cutting his break lines!

Keeping your emotions bottled up can be stressfull. I find it much better to let it all out in some fashion as mentioned above. I mean keying his car will work, but the blackmail or cutting his break lines I find to be far more gratyifying.

And watch the news. Usually when you cut his break lines, the accident is serious enough that it makes the headlines.

I got fired several years ago for shooting off my mouth at the boss once too often. It was an ethical thing: I had ethics, and he didn't.
I was in the dumps for awhile, but pulled myself back up and it's all worked out in the end.
As others said, when a door closes, another opens up.

I've been laid off once. During the dot.com boom I worked for a company getting paid a gazillion dollars and poof....the CEO cooked the books and the owners (a $7B company, yes B) shut it down immediately.

It was in C-bus and I celebrated with a free pitcher of beer on the house at Thurman Cafe. There was a sticker on the popcorn machine that said

"George, You're Fired!" and I signed it. Go there, have a pitcher of beer and relax.

If you want to succeed in life you will only compete with 10% of the population. If you want to succeed you will. You know what to do next. The hard part is to compel yourself to do so. If you do you will succeed.

Aloha.
