although I didn't use the word assinine...I think the pick of Peterson is not assinine at all. It the throwing back the big fish Joe Thomas that is assinine.

We got a draft pick who has started every game and is probably the foremost reason why we have upraised our Offense from the Bowels of 30-32 in the league to #4!

Assinine is why would anyone want to UNDUE that!

Peterson is a great prospective RB...remains healthy could be one of the best ever.

AFC North with a struggling OL...our offense would be dawg meat again...30-32 and that is with AP...btw how much would we be running in the 2nd half down 2-3 touchdowns.

I don't know if I agree with that, but no doubt he is one of several reasons.

I don't know if I agree either EO but we wouldn't be the team we are, all I think agree with that. But the thing was heading into the draft that I thought and I believe you thought was that JT would make the entire offense better. And that is exactly what has happened. Our passing game is unbelievable and our running game is way better then in recent memory, so the reasons for picking JT still hold true, and have come to be. That said the impact has been inspite of the lack of sportscenter time for JT, has outweighed the impact of AP.

Browns 5-3

Viking 3-5

While it would appear that JT has added to the win total, the same can't be said for AP inspite of his greatness, so who was the better pick the record says JT. AP hasn't added to the overall performance of the team they continue to lose, and we are now thought of as a big play high output offense, and it all goes back to 2 players JT and ES. Other then those 2 guys we are about the same. So from a win total satndpoint only how can you reach any other conclusion then to say JT was the better pick, after all we have a winning record and the Vikings have a losing record, and AP while he did rip up and actually win the game for the Vikings against the Bolts, I wouldn't think that he will be able to run for 300 yards every game. If you remember the Bills back in the day OJ would run for 2 3 hundred yarsd and the Bills would still lose most of the time. It's not that a good/great RB isn't important he is, he just isn't going to carry the team thru a season like a LT can. And he doesn't make the other players on the offense better like a LT will. That was why we choose JT and that is why he still is our best choice. 5-3 vs 3-5 we now see the impact each player had on their team and JT in every respect was that better choice.

JT's run blocking has been better than ok. It hasn't been as good as his pass blocking, but it has still been very good. Use this as an example. In the Dolphin's game we are running left, Joe is pulling and a Phins player runs away from Joe. We have done a great job running to the left due to Joe and Steinbach.

Hindsight being 20/20.......I'd still take Thomas.

Peterson is excellent talent, but so is Thomas and I'd rather have an O-line that can block than any other peice on Offense. We have enough talent at WR and TE and Jamal Lewis has provied us a true treat at RB, we don't need the flash back. Willie Parker is and UFA and look what he can do when you have an O-line that can block, and a passing game to keep the defense honest. We are emulating that and that's a good thing.

Sorry, I still like our draft the way it is. Thomas has been a beast at Tackle and Brady is getting the experience and chance to learn he needs.

Miami could/would/should have taken Brady. That would have left Ginn (who was and still is the biggest reach I can recall) on the board till later in the first round/early in the second round where he should have been.

"I don't know if I agree with that"

I didn't expect you to...he don't score TDs and has no stats.

Look you n Brown to the Bone can think what you want.

We've been screaming about a Cornerstone left tackle here for years and now we finally get one and he's playing up to his rep and then some. Oh what a coincidence we have the 4th rated offense in the air.

Ummm is it DA...well he's taking advantage of it, he gets credit for that. But without the OL and specifically his blind side he cannot drop back comfortably in the pocket and look off safeties, make pump fakes, check down 2-3 WRs...all things he is doing and learning and getting better at. But we all have a poor memory.

Our QB taking a 3 step drop not holding onto the ball one nano second longer and gets hit from behind to have it INTd in the endzone. Not by a Corner blitz but by an OLB.

DA in last year OL had to lock onto one WR and get rid of the ball quick...halllaleuia he didn't get sacked as much as CF...woopity do. He got hit enough to go on the IR. This year he rarely has been touched...TOUCHED!

DA would throw the ball and throw it into triple teams all in the name of getting rid of the ball quick cause with our OL it was a necessity.

Yes, the entire OL has made improvements not just our LT...but only the elite pass rushers come from the blind side (not 100% but as a steady game plan) Game after game. Taylor of Miami, Tapp of Seahawks, Suggs of Ravens, Raiders...all have edge rushers that lead their teams in sacks!

Without a doubt Steinbach has made the transition easier for Joe T...still its him against an Island against the NFLs elite.

DA who makes one step lateral and he has a tough time resetting his feet and inaccuracy sets in.

Is Joe Thomas the only reason we have improved...heck no that is not what I'm saying.

I'm saying nobody else on this team has the TALENT to play LT...nobody.

Nobody has for a Brown since Tony Jones. The last time we had an offense...and todays NFL is so involved in the Air Game. thats why all records are getting set with this era. QB ratings are up higher than ever. LT is even more important in this era and guess what - WE'VE FINALLY JOINED THE ERA....why? cause we finally got a LT.

So have your own opinion. You're entitled to it. But I know I'm 100% correct

but still JMHO

If this pick were being made over 100 times I would still pick Joe Thomas EVERY TIME.
He was the right pick for the Browns.
Nothing else can be said about it.
This is what it is like with some of you who still want Peterson.

I agree, KIDD...what is the point in hand wringing? We got a real football player just like the old days... run and scatter bodies. We will have JT for many years and we will never regret it...and we will also attract more RBs.

Just look at the draft picks around 1957-59 when Jim Brown came in... got Hcikerson, Schafrath, Wooten and Brewer...that really made the team. Mitchell and brown were great but made greater by blocking.

Bernie was good but his Oline gave him time...he was not good at running. Thomas will help just the same.

Come on man....it isn't about scoring touchdowns.

I agree 100%, Thomas was a great pick at the right time.

I just don't agree he is probably the biggest reason for the teams turn around.

I think the qb play and the OC have a big part in that also.....not to mention the vastly improved interior line....actually, the addition od Steiny and Mckinney have as much to do with things as does Thomas....and they don't score TDs either.

Say what you will, but please get off this kick I somehow only credit "skill" players...that just isn't the case.

Ugoh needs a lot of help, where thomas can be on an island, there's a huge dropoff.

Looks like the browns fans wheren't the only ones to see how crappy shaffer was at LT seeing the redraft still had us trading back up to get a LT

We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

Yeah, he's not a bad run blocker at all, but as I was using in my example, that is something he can improve on. His pass blocking has been superb.

Thomas is one of the reasons for this turnaround. Not THE reason, but a reason.

We have a pretty damn good guard sitting right next to him which helps. We have a QB who gets rid of the ball in a hurry. We have receivers making plays, and we have somebody that is NOT Maurice Carthon. Chud has done an excellent job at playcalling, and is using the player's strengths to gain an edge. I agree with what you said. Thomas is an integral part in the rise of this offense, but not the biggest reason.

Speaking of which, there was a specific play in the Seattle game where they lined up, and later motioned someone to the far sidelines.......Vickers maybe? Can't remember, but the defense was comepletely confused, left him totally isolated out there. Braylon was on the inside from what I remember, and all that was out there was the receiver, Vickers, and 1 corner. I remember yelling (not that DA could hear me) mismatch! They're confused! Mismatch on the left!

I can't remember what happened, but I think Seattle ended up calling a timeout, but I'm not certain.

When Carthon called plays, we NEVER confused a defense. Hell, the players said half of the time the defenses were calling out their plays.

I think what's more shocking is that it was right about 50/50 around here as to whether or not Shaffer was a bum as a left tackle. He was, and now that other 50% probably know it.

For the record, Ugoh has been a bum as well. The quick drops, reads, throws, and timing of the Colts offense has always been why Manning has had such low sack numbers. He's been getting smacked around this year, much of it because of Ugoh. No, he wasn't getting officially sacked, but he was getting popped.

So how is it so cut-and-dry that Thomas is so much better to make it "unintelligent" and "silly" to take Peterson?

I never said Thomas was so much better than Peterson. You are looking at it, at least in your post to me, from a talent standpoint. They are both good players. No doubt about it. Thomas is a franchise LT and Peterson is a Freak. But that has nothing to do with my opinion.

If you would take a moment and look at it from the viewpoint of the importance of a solid offensive line and what that can do for your team, then it becomes a little clearer as to why I see it as "cut-and-dry" that you take the Franchise LT over the Great RB.

You already know the impact that trench players have on the stability of the team. both on offense and defense. I'm sure you have bemoaned with the rest of us over our past offensive line problems. For the offense, the line is the key to it's success. And for the line, the LT is the key to it's success.

Of all the positions on the line, it's the LT that is the most difficult to fill. That should be obvious by the huge contracts awarded to them compared to the rest of the lineman. To obtain a franchise LT you have to get him high in the first round of the draft. There is no other way. No one releases a franchise LT into free agency. No one trades one away. Everyone wants one. No one gives one up. They play on the same team for 10 years because teams do everything they can to keep them.

They are that rare. The only place to get them is in the first round.

" Teams in search of a left tackle need not dispatch scouts to Saskatchewan, Barcelona and Grand Rapids. They need not set up a visit with every street free agent who fills up a doorway. They need not butter up agents of undrafted players with fruit baskets and sweet-whispered promises.

All anyone in need of a left tackle has to do is select one in the first round of the draft. As cows come from farms, left tackles come from first rounds. Last season, 20 of the league's 31 starting left tackles--64.5 percent--were first-round picks."

" "Most teams rather would not expend a first-round choice on an offensive lineman," Hanifan says. "They'd rather use it on a playmaker, a skill-position athlete or a pass rusher. But if you don't have a left tackle, you'll have to put the tight end over there or chip with the back to eliminate the right defensive end. That takes away from the offense and lets the defense dictate. "

link

Look not at the individual accomplishments of each player as you can dig up plenty of highlight film and stats on the RB but none on the LT. Look instead to the effect each has had on his team.

Peterson, although a complete Freak and will likely, barring injury, become one of the best, if not the best, RB in the league. Still, his team struggles. His QB's get sacked and injured. I think they are on their 3rd one now due to injury. They cannot stop the sacks and are not effective in the passing game. They are helpless vs. a good run-stopping team as they were vs. the Cowboys who held AP to 63 yards and Philly who held him to 70. The Vikes couldn't play come from behind because they give up sacks and have no passing game.

Thomas, who makes few highlight films and has no eye-poping stats, has solidified our QB's blind side rendering each quality rushing defensive end he has faced ineffective. They rarely get hurries. He has given up no sacks in eight games. He pulls and gets to the second level on running plays and allows his QB to have the time to make reads and find the open receiver. A lot of them in fact. He doesn't do it single-handedly as Steinbach plays that side too, but Steinbach doesn' face the opposition's best pass rusher. Thomas does.

Thomas has done more to allow this offense to open up and score points than any other single factor. Leave Shaffer at LT and Anderson gets blind-sided as Charlie did last season. Steinbach would be asked to help Schaffer and that would weaken the line further. Even with Steinbach, this line would be much the same as it was last year without Thomas. There wouldn't be as much rush right up the middle, but the left side would still be a seive.

Perhaps the Vikes could have used the LT instead of the RB. Maybe then they wouldn't have a shuttle to the hospital for their QB's and they could be more effective in the passing game. They wouldn't have the RB highlight film they have now, but maybe they'd have more than 3 wins.

I'll take scoring points and wins over highlight film everyday.

The LT is simply a more important position to the team than a running back. A good offensive line can make a great running back out of a good one. It can make a good QB out of an average one.

Next to the QB the LT is simply the most important position on the offense.

The writer of the article posted says we should have taken the RB. Wrong. He was thinking of that as "in addition" to the passing game we now have. But without Thomas we don't have this passing game.

And come this Sunday, we wouldn't stand a chance in hell of competing with the Steelers because AP ain't running for 200 yards vs. the Steelers. And we wouldn't be able to pass either.

It would be asinine to take a running back over a LT if you don't have a franchise LT already in place.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Not to jump into the middle of your discussion (though it appears I'm doing it anyway ) above and beyond the effects that a good LT has on the offensive line and all that jazz (true though it is) there's another blip worth mentioning.

Left tackle is so damned important that you have to have some real skills to be able to play it at even a decent level in the NFL. It's truly a "skill position" though few call it that. With that being the case, the rarest of skill position players......#1 WR's, RB's, QB's, and LT's.....all really need to come from the 1st round where their talent is undeniable.

I didn't really look at your link Dub, but if it listed last year's starting LT's, and gave percentages based on those numbers, they really need to be changed again because OUR starting left tackle last year wasn't a 1st round pick, sucked, and was replaced by a 1st round pick, hehe.

Just a general comment to close. When push comes to shove, it's far easier to get a good RB than it is to get a good left tackle. Since a LT has to be a contributing factor not only on running downs as WELL as passing downs (where he becomes even more vital) the good money is taking a left tackle every time if you really need one. And boy, did we REALLY need one.

Maybe Peterson goes on to become the best RB in the league while Thomas is regarded as being in a group of excellent left tackles. He'll always mean more to this team than Peterson ever would, and will more than likely play longer as well.

Peterson is a great talent, but he wouldn't be doing what he's doing if they didn't have something like 10 or 11 pro-bowl births amongst that line. Anderson wouldn't be doing his thing if ......Hell.....point made.

It is MHO that it would be just a bit of a stretch to say that JT is responsible for this all by his lonesome don't you think? That was what I meant by I don't totally agree. Put your gun away, I wasn't trying to totally disagree with what you said just that part.

Thank you Todd McShay for showing everybody that drugs are bad. It was very kind of you to destroy your own mind, and to live as an example for children every where, of just what damage drugs can do to your brain. I am however waiting for the day that the NFL starts drug testing sports writers, so hacks like yourself will not be able to waste people's time with your drivel.

The article was written in '02. There's some quotes from Savage when he was with the Rats that agree with your skills statement...

" Phil Savage, Baltimore's director of college scouting, says the Ravens start out with 25 prospects on their board who can play tackle, compared with 50 who can play on the interior. And less than half of those 25 have quick enough feet to play the left side, where players must be both strong enough to stop a power rusher and quick enough to head off a speed rusher coming around the corner on the quarterback's blind side.

"The level of excellence at guard and center is so low compared to left tackle," Savage says. "A sixth- or seventh-round guy can play on the interior, but probably not at left tackle."

At any rate, we have our LT, and IMO, it was worth the wait. We got the right guy.

With only a little luck, we won't have to bicker about drafting a LT for 12 years.......a guy to groom for when Thomas retires 2-3 years after that.

In my opinion the reasons our offense is doing so much better this year is:

1( Joe Thomas (Including being able to move Shaffer to RT)

2( Derek Anderson

3( Braylon Edwards

4( Chud

5( Steinbach

6( Jamal

I would mention Winslow but he played this well last year too, so he isn't a change. The last three in my opinion may be able to be switched around, they are all pretty close.

"I just don't agree he is probably the biggest reason for the teams turn around."

think what you want Peen...you never, ever never ever wanted to invest high in a LT...you debated hard against McKinnie...I think your reasoning was Mike Williams was better

Now we got a QB putting up some numbers and I've given him as much or more credit that he deserves.

As for giving credit where its due...take this thread and your posts...that is damaging to your opinion base on statistical players versus Grunts more than any remark I've said.

But you have a history of posting...maybe its not what you truly believe...but your posts over the years have set its town.

Still - throw out Chuds O, throw out DAs success - without JT and a instead having a Shaffer out there none of those would be experience this year.

How good would DA be on the IR. We'd be losers once again. I can't believe you just don't get it.

But continue to disagree with me if you wish. Sorry we simply would not be the same team and as successful if we had AP instead of JT.

If you think DA's cream would have risen on its own - go ahead.

The fact that you really think that the Steiny n McKinney have as much to do if not more than Thomas again is proof in the pudding that you just don't get the air game. Both have united the OL and made it into a unit...but none is on Island against the elite pass rushers like Joe Thomas. We've checked them all year!

But I don't think I can convince you...thats ok its your choice of course.

I've said my peace and as mentioned I KNOW I'm 100% correct.

I don't get why Russell would still be No.1??? He's been a holdout and hasn't even stepped foot on the playing field, so how do we know what he's going to play like, especially like a No.1 pick? Now Calvin Johnson has played well and so has Peterson, obviously! So that would be my one and two, not sure which order but I guess it's six of one and half a dozen of another! LOL

As is always the case, it's not just one factor that makes an offense go from cellar-dweller to top-10. All the reasons you listed contributed, with Lewis probably being the least important.

If going back and talking about pimped players, maybe we should discuss Zuk for a while. That should be fun. Gallery is another...We have Nate Dorsey who many wanted in round 1(though I can't say for sure you were one....but you probably were since you have pimped every LT to come down the pike)

You keep saying I don't get it......but really man, I get it just fine.

Looking back, my hindsight is much clearer.

Too bad that the NFL doesn't have a "real" re-draft, huh?

But even knowing what we know today, it would be a very tough decision for any GM.

But, in the Browns case, they already filled their needs at RB via free agency but were unable to address their LT needs.

It is still a "no brainer" for the Browns...Joe Thomas would be our pick if there was a "real" re-draft...or....a re-re-draft after this re-draft.

Emphasis on the word, "real"....WOOF...mac

Zuk...is that all you got...lol

You have a history...a philosphy...you have maintained that OL is not as important as lets say a QB.

But in effect - you cannot have that QB of which you seek without the OL. This is a fact you simply wish to ignore and always have...not just this week. Since the 6 years that I've known you.

Steinbach...I see you fail to state that I wished him to be a Brown instead of Faine and pimped him...as well as McNeill and Merrimen.
Actually Gallery I never really pimped only cause he was a foregone conclusion - but without a doubt I wished we had the opportunity to draft him. But what a Hypocrite you are to even mention Gallery...it was you that in our debates about Steinbach where I wished to start him at OG and possibly groom him for LT and you stated the best LT was going to come out the following year in Gallery...you were the first person to bring Gallery to my attention!!! How dare you bring him up as a feather to your cause...lol

So because I state..."YOU DON"T GET IT"

This permeates an attitude of superiority?

Sorry Peen - you got your good moments a lot more than others give you credit for.

But not regarding the OL - your view on the OL has always been one of stick any average joe in there and we will be fine!

JMHObservations.... and Pdawg what's your beef with me...be a man and state it instead of sneaking behind my back and stabbing me. Be specific...if I have erred I'll clean it up but back stabbing I don't really need. Peen n I will work this out ourselves.

JMHO

The "eye popping" stats for Thomas are as follows:

DA has been sacked 8 times.
DA has thrown for 17 TD's
BE has 9 TD's
KW2 is averaging 15 ypc.
Thomas has not given up a sack.
Chud looks like a genius

Consider that the Browns last year

gave up 53 sacks.
Frye got hurt
Anderson got hurt
Anderson and Frye did not perform well.
BE had problems
KW2 had an 8 yard per reception average.
The Browns fire Carthon and do not hire Davidson

So the only thing that can be pointed to is the Thomas sacks.

The selection of Thomas was the best move for the Browns team. With the addition of Steinbach and McKinney, the OL went from terrible to good. We even see the Browns pulling Thomas and Steinbach.

This is not too difficult to figure out. Most Browns fans have clamored for OL help since 99. Well now the Browns have a decent OL and guess what, they can win some games.

Maybe we can re-draft Satan to counter god hating us every time we play the Steelers.

Peterson was hurt and didn't return. I'm sure we will hear all about this when more is known.

Early reports are that he probably could've returned to the game but the Vikings were already getting it handed to them anyway so there wasn't any point.

That's good to hear. He seems like a great kid, not to mention I don't want anyone to get injured.

NRT'A'....(ANYONE)...

Well, to the AP pimps...does it count for much when Peterson is knocked out of the game and may be done for the season and Joe Thomas put in another good game and looks to be healthy for the next Browns game?

BTW...up to the point where Peterson left the game..." Peterson looked like a run-of-the-mill rookie Sunday"...that quote from a news recap of the game.

Peterson had 11 rushes for 45 yds with LG of 12 yds in 3qts of play.

The Browns made the right call on draft day when they took LT, Joe Thomas with the 3rd pick...no need for a "re-draft" here...no need to look back... because we can't change what we did on draft day and honestly, Savage made a great decission by putting the Oline needs first.

Also, the book on Peterson before the draft was he ran too high and took took too much punishment as a result. Thus, many NFL scouts had injury concerns about Peterson and he fell to the 7th pick.

The hit on Peterson...the Packers Al Harris took Peterson's legs out with a low tackle.

I'm happy with Joe Thomas...WOOF...mac

How many running backs have gone down this year?

He got drilled right on the knee. Could have been a lot worse. It wasn't some "freak" injury that people say he's prone to. Jamal Lewis, LT, Alexander, whoever it was probably ends up with some problems after that hit. I'm happy with Joe Thomas too, but it gets old hearing the same crap over and over.

Just because he broke the rushing record doesn't mean he can't have an off game here and there like these other "run of the mill" backs? Or is he supposed to run for 200 each week?

He won't be running for 200 for a while now.
