If you were a 'muso' at Bowling Green back in the day, you knew about Dr. Wallace E. DePue, and his stable of incredibly gifted musical sons.
They were Wunderkind from their earliest days... and were destined for musical heights, no matter what genre they decided to pursue. To his credit, Dr. D never forced his boys into the strict confines of Classical Music, and as such, his boys managed to forge an alt-music path for themselves, separate their Father's conventional road.
And they absolutely killed it.
I knew Wallace Jr. ("Bunky") from my first time at BG. He was a private student of a good friend from my hometown, Sandy Hensley (a grad student when I arrived as a Freshman). I knew Zachary (the baby), because he was best buds with a private student of mine- Jon Rose- 10+ years later, when I did my BG2 stint (Jon's dad Jerome was on the piano faculty, and conscripted me to privately teach his son on cello. He was also good friends with Dr. D). Between Bunky and Zach, there were two others. All of them are True Players, and all of them play at world-class level.
Today, Alex DePue died in a traffic accident in Mexico.
We are all devastated by this news. We literally watched these fine young men grow up from their diaper days to become fantastic representatives of the best musicians can be.
Tonight, my best goes out to the DePue family, in their time of bereavement. 49 is way too young.
This is the aspect of Life that is simply not fair.
After all the Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Kreutzer and Galamian, this is what Alex loved most. In this clip, he cranks out a one-man mashup of Yes and Michael Jackson. Our eyes can't stop leaking tonight.
Fam has lost a loved one... and it really fkng hurts.
So sorry, Clem. I will definitely listen to more of the Depue Brothers later today. The bow control when he broke into Smooth Criminal was incredible, something I never would have thought possible. It's such a shame to find out about such talent this way.

Having grown up in the BG area, Alex was part of my extended friend group. Many of my buddies back home were close friends with him. Some are musicians that played with him on his rise up through the ranks. This death is being deeply felt by my peer group back home. My heart goes out to him, his family, and all those his life has touched. RIP Alex.
I'm sorry fpr your loiss Clem. My prayers for you, his family, and all his friends.
