Ok, so I'm sure everyone has heard about the 5G upgrade by now.

I have to go get a new sim card for my phone. Which is only a minor hassle that I'm ok with.

What I'm not ok with is Jaguar emailed me saying that a bunch of features are no longer going to work.

They did not say my car can possibly be updated. Just nope, it's not working any longer.

I'm pissed off. I paid a lot of money for that car and for those features.

They should at least offer a way to upgrade my car's computer.

Anyways, here is an article about it.

https://www.wsoctv.com/news/local/s...ou-need-know/QNF2NIM5NZCAXI7U4WGZDWAZAE/

I'm so mad.

thats gonna a problem. people dont realize how clutch the availability of your ride having its own signal can be sometimes.

i wonder if we can still use apple carplay or android if we already have a 5g capable phone. this needs to be one of those times where manufacturers offer a free software update for this.

Everybody's car is screwed. There's gonna be a hoopla about this once people try to use their gps and car says nope.

You know all these manufacturers go with the cheapest components available to deliver what they want to deliver. They used some 2012 chip that was maxed out on its capabilities, now there is no way to cheaply upgrade, so they just let you take the hit. Same reason we have to keep buying new phones every few years. My last upgrade, I was told my new phone is going to be 5G compatible. That means a lot of people will be needing new phones too.

Well, my cell provider is offering free sim cards to upgrade. I just have to go to one of their stores. That is my mission this weekend, so we shall see how it goes.

I'm way more concerned about my car. I paid for all these features that I will no longer have, and I'm pissed. Jaguar did nothing to make it right or update systems. I would be more than willing to pay for the upgrade because I know technology doesn't stand still. My car only has 30K miles on it. This is BS.

Ouch, five years is forever in electronics age, especially considering the components were probably dinosaurs when they used them. Great opportunity for a third party fix and serious profits though... just saying.

I can't believe 5 years went so fast. The car still feels brand new. I have to take it to the dealership for maintenance soon, so I will ask them if anything can be done. frown

If they say no, wait about three months after this all happens and then hit the mechanic forums for your car. Somebody will come up with a workaround if it's possible. If it was my car, I'd set up some google alerts to get notified about a fix.

Is 3rd party software really something that can be trusted? My car is a Jaguar. It was expensive. I don't want to screw up the computer. It would be unsellable. I'm counting on resale value someday in the future.

If a reputable 3rd party tuner comes up with it I’d trust it. We’ve had software changes done to our Audi A7 and Mini Clubman, most recently to make Sirius radio available in my wife’s Mini. That was just a software change though, 5G would likely involve hardware. I’ve actually done some tweaks to my A7 myself using the OBDeleven tool, you can do some pretty cool stuff with it. You can also brick your car if not careful.

I would imagine if safety features are impacted then a well-executed temper tantrum might get you somewhere. Safety features are there to mitigate risk, and if they're suddenly taken away then that's a big problem. If it's just convenience stuff (GPS, remote-start, etc) then an aftermarket solution is probably your best bet (and especially if you still take it to the dealership and have a relationship with them, then I'd try to get them to cover or split the cost with you.

IMO, getting left out in the cold by a luxury brand like that after only 5 years is totally unacceptable. If all the different car brands had the same obsolescence timeline, then maybe I'd buy their sob story that there's nothing they can do, but they're all different.

Might be a little extreme, but the window is going to close soon on a great time to sell your car. If you're able to go w/o one for a little bit, I bet you could make out like a bandit.

Thank you guys. I will think about this. I have an appt with the dealership in March so I will ask them if there is anything they can do.

Turns out my phone had to be replaced too. Sucks.

Oober made a good point about value on vehicles right now. My parents just sold their 2 or 3 year old Kia Sorrento (they bought new) and bought a brand new Tuberon or some name like that ( one of their new SUVs). They sold it for the same price or very close to it as when they bought it. So there’s a possibility of getting great value in it.

I understand the flip side that you love your vehicle, because I feel the same about mine.

Would we? I do all my documentation at work on a phone. I call doctors, send orders for signature, have the signed orders sent to the pharmacy, arrange equipment deliveries, contact families, etc, all from my work phone. Without it I’d be back to landlines and fax machines…and waiting games while my patients suffered.

I book all my travels from my phone.
I FaceTime with my mom from my phone.
I visit Dawgtalkers on my phone.
I no longer have a desktop or laptop because I have a phone.

So I disagree wholeheartedly.

I actually type with only my right pointer finger. It drives my girlfriend nuts. Lol. “Why don’t you use your thumbs?!” …because I don’t. It never felt natural. I didn’t have a cellphone, except my work provided flip phone (2005-2010), until the iPhone4 came out. I never texted until then. So while everyone else had learned to use their thumbs to bang out three 3’s just to write a single letter ‘d’, I started from scratch. No predrilled method.
As to the filtering out the nonsense. The internet is what you make of it. I do my best not to rabbit hole down paths that only raise my blood pressure. I don’t ‘doom scroll’. My phone is a tool for communication, photography, conducting business, and seeking knowledge or entertainment. If that’s how you choose to use it then the bad stuff is just background noise.

after skimming this thread yesterday afternoon, I was struck by the whim to see what my old sedan might go for. Pre-RONA, I was getting offers from area dealerships saying that they'd buy it for up to $6500. Yesterday, I saw several currently listed with comparable mileage for $9-10k.

If I hadn't just put all new wheels, tires, brakes and suspension on it, I'd totally jump at this and just drive the truck. I only drive these days to go to the gym or the grocery store, so I barely put any miles on things at all anymore.

Unfortunately, the urge to click Palus Politicus is hard to resist.

Don't I know it.

I see both sides of the unplug notion. Tech can definitely be useful. I'm not sure "just" belongs anywhere near the background noise, though. Background noise can have insidious influence.

I see both sides of this and I think it varies from individual to individual. As for myself I only use phones to make calls and text which I only do in response to the grandkids and daughter. Having a cell phone on hand for emergencies while away from home is very practical as well. There's a reason why the telegraph was replaced by the telephone. You can more easily understand someone's intent when hearing their voice over the printed word.

I know people who much like Portland use their cell phones for business. I know people who use their cell phones to trade stocks and keep up with the market that way no matter where they are. They are very useful for a lot of people. Then I know a lot of young people who use it for nothing more than Twitter and Instagram who have chosen to disassociate from the real world. So much they could use such a valuable tool for yet they've chosen to waste that vital tool for nothing but to be self absorbed and distracted with something of zero importance.

I guess I got lucky. I had a pretty old phone and it had gotten to the point that the battery held a charge less and less. It was still good enough for me but I knew it would have to be replaced soon. About that time Verizon came out with a deal where I could get a new IPhone 13 for $100. Considering the fact I knew I would need to upgrade soon it was on offer I just couldn't resist.

And that is the problem...along with the cost of a new car. The price of used cars is way up because the demand is up. My feeling is to do what you did, drop some cash in to it and drive the thing another 6-7 years. That is cheaper than buying a new car.

I'll admit I have never been a "car" guy. I always bought a nice new car will all the bells and whistles, but I never drove them for less than 10 years. Probably more like 12 years.

We are going to be in the market for at least 1 new (to us) car. Both of our current ones are paid off and in fine shape... so I'm looking forward to this as much as a root canal, but our family is going to expand and both cars are kinda already at capacity when we decide to drive to see family.

What I'm going to try to do is time the market as well as possible to get good money out of the current car while not overpaying on the newer one and not being down a car for too long. My wife prefers buying new, I don't. She doesn't like having to worry about buying into potential problem cars, but I'll take that on to avoid paying that initial depreciation.

Ahhh...Oobs moving up to the mini van stage of life. That is a chick magnet for sure! LOL

Just playing...no doubt for some the time comes where you need a larger vehicle.

I don't know that the time is right to try to time anything. Your buying power drops by the day.

When I bought cars, I always wanted a new car, but as I said, I always planned on driving them for a decade plus and wasn't all that worried initial depreciation because I wasn't planning to trade it anytime soon. To me, that depreciation only hurts those who trade vehicles on a 4-5-6 year basis. You get that depreciation back after you aren't paying for the thing anymore. It starts to pay you. That is why I bought what I wanted with everything I wanted because I knew my fat ass was going to be sitting in it for 10-12 years..

I'll probably end up driving a minivan. I love my wagon, but it's not going to be big enough. I'm still going to hold out as long as possible, though. My wife drives an SUV, and wants to upgrade to a large SUV. To me, SUVs are the new soccer mom car... I don't like them (if I have to swap out my car for something that moves more people, then I'm going to get a people-mover (van)).

I also much prefer to drive a car for longer. Cars nowadays aren't the same as they are 10+ years ago. Cars, pretty much across the board, are all pretty reliable and there really isn't all that much of a difference, IMO. Hyundai is putting out really nice cars. To me, recent BMW's don't really do a whole lot for me (the ones I would honestly be able to afford, at least). The gap between 'good' cars and 'cheap' cars is VERY small. To a lesser extent, the gap between luxury cars and common cars is getting smaller as well. I'm a bit of a car guy, but cars are becoming more and more of a commodity.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Just FYI oober, minivans suck. Kids have room in a big ass SUV, and you can retain your masculinity. wink

jk of course, nobody will make fun of your minivan.

I drove minivans for many years when I sold cars. They were great vehicles. They were comfortable to drive, especially important when considering that I had a 45 minute drive to and from work .....they were good on gas .... and they had room. Lots of room. I could haul anything I needed to, and then head out for a night on the town. They were chick magnets. wink lol Crazy but true.

I bougnt one for myself, after I left the business, and my Dakota died. I drove it till it died as well.

I drive a wagon right now, and it's favorite car I've ever owned. SUVs are useless, IMO. Not as good as vans at hauling people, and all of them are just a car chassis lifted up a little. They're new-age soccer-mom mobiles and I'm just waiting for everyone to figure it out.

I always viewed them as a truck with a built-on truck cap that isn't meant to haul stuff, just haul more butts.

I'd rather have a sedan, any day. I just hate sitting as relatively low as you do when surrounded by SUV's. it makes seeing in heavy traffic a pain in the ass.
