Some of the reDraft talk got me thinking. I remember prior to the draft some folks typing at the top of their lungs that we HAD to take Calvin Johnson. Over and over we heard that Calvin Johnson was the best player in the draft and that defenses would have to put at least 2 defenders on him.

I said that I had watched Calvin Johnson play and had reservations. I said that Calvin Johnson was a raw talent that (at least initially) would struggle in the pros because - he used his body to catch a lot of passes, he did not go up and extend for high passes - etc.

Certain posters on this board told me I was completely football ignorant and would be better off saying, "I haven't seen him, but I don't want him."

I am sure those posters will still stand by their comments... I maintain, CJ is an athletic phenom... but a raw WR.

Here are the stats on the guy who some posters claimed would make a HUGE and immediate impact and change the game.

Calvin Johnson 21 rec | 357 yds | 2 TD

Braylon Edwards 43 rec | 752 yds | 10 TD
Kellen Winslow 47 rec | 703 yds | 4 TD
Joe Jurevicius 29 rec | 349 yds | 3 TD

I would rather have Joe Jurevicius than Calvin Johnson. Joe makes insane 3rd down grabs. He is a big, sure-handed target who has been a part of 3 Super Bowl teams.

Calvin is a rookie with another great reciever on the team. He will be a stud for a long time.

JJ is just a great guy, with great hands and desire. He is a perfect fit with his experience and attitude.

Merth, I'm thinking your too quick to point this out..

First,, Edwards is on his third year... Winslow plays a different position and is on his 2nd actual year (4th season if you count the injury in the first and the bike accident in between)

And JJ is what,, in his 11th year or something like that..

Don't expect anyone to believe the comparison is fair.. it's just not. you are comparing experienced guys with a rookie.. a much hyped rookie,, but a rookie just the same..

It's unfair to compare him to even our guys at this point.

Having said that, I wouldn't trade him for Joe Thomas in a million years.. I love what Thomas brings..

Now, if somehow, Detroit gets a brain cramp and they decide they want to trade CJ,,, I'd listen... can you imagine him and Braylon on the same team.. once he learns the pro game and gets some experience...

Wowzers

AAAHHHH Yes... My arch-nemesis Daman! Curses!

Seriously, I understand what you are saying. I too think Calvin has the 'potential' to be a long term stud.

But now, is the perfect time to attack as these certain posters claimed that CJ would be an INSTANT game changer. It also went back to the BPA argument that Calvin was the #1 player in the draft so even if we needed a LT - we should take CJ because he was the BPA.

There is no one in the draft I wanted more than Joe Thomas. I am glad it worked out.

How can you compare a rookie WR with veteran WR. Those stats are more flawed than anything I've ever seen Mensa post.

I still think we made the best pick for our team but CJ may still end up being the best player in this draft. It's a little early to declare him a bust or stud. Don't you think?

I'm with you on that one..................

but, as they said rookie wide outs. and also the fact that he plays on the Lions will affect his stats. Roy Williams is a good wide out also. He's not doing that well this year. It's because they spread the ball between four WRs and there's only so many touches one guy can have.

If he was on a diff team his production might be different. Also just because you aren't making catches doesn't mean you're not a game changer. Just having Randy Moss on the field guarentees that a safety has to make sure he doesn't get behind anyone all game. That opens things up for everybody else

yes he was hurt but no it wasn't for 6 games

He missed one game

One interesting note, CJ has not had more than 4 catches in one game
Week 1: 4 for 70 yds. 1 TD
Week 2: 4 for 61 yds. 1 TD
Week 3: 2 for 58 yds.
Week 4: missed due to injury
Week 5: 1 for 3 yds.
Week 6: BYE
Week 7: 2 for 37 yds.
Week 8: 2 for 44 yds.
Week 9: 3 for 47 yds.
Week 10: 3 for 37 yds.

just tossin' in my .02,

Braylons improvement this seasons has me on the who cares side of this debate. Joe has been amazing. Other than game one, he had been pretty much invisible. That is damn impressive for a rookie, let alone one playing LT in the NFL. Exellent pick. Petersons 10 weeks of incrediblilty could give one pause on the pick, but now the #1 concern with him has reared it's ugly head, "injury", will this be a continuing trend with this young talent? I don't know, but with Edwards clicking this season Calvin would not have been a good pick for us this year even if Joe was scooped up by Detroit.

He's only been out 1 game, but has been suffering from a back problem since like game 3, which might be affecting his performance as well.
