Didn't see this posted anywhere... A lot of you younger fans probably don't remember him but he is a great guy. Met him twice: once in Vegas and once in Youngstown and just his everyday energy was enough to knock you out. Lost money on him in the Bramble fight and lost a 12 pack on the Camacho fight ( I still say he won ). He was like our Browns...you had to love him and you didn't mind losing any bets because he was OURS ! Sad to see what happened to him....but good to see he is OK......... http://www.usatoday.com/sports/columnist...nterstitialskip

A big hero back home,...Youngstown will always be home for me,....
Didn't realize the referee committed suicide too,...wow.
Still have to wonder why they won't put headgear on these professional boxers.

I was at a friend's house that day, I was like 11 years old, and my friend's dad had the match on the TV... we watched it happen..... it was a freaky, freaky day.
Browns is the Browns

I'm not even going to play that,....
One more time,...?? Why are we not wearing headgear.
Basketball is the only major "almost-contact" sport that doesn't have it,...(ahem, soccer is not a major sport,...)
Baseball
Football
Hockey NASCAR,...
and, in some of America's workforce, you have to wear a helmet on the job.
Olympic boxing requires it, and does a pretty dang good job of determining "winners."

I saw the "duck killer" fight. That ref should have ended it. Mancini would never have made it as a fighter today, as he was a bleeder.

I don't blame the ref. The kid made a spirited comeback in the 13th and was clobbered early in the 14th round.....it isn't like he was standing there defenseless and getting pummeled....it was a punch.
No doubt there had been a cumulative impact on the guys brain....but that isn't something the ref could determine....I think it highly unfair to say the ref should have stopped the fight being we know the end result.

I don't blame the Ref either, it's not like Kim was getting his ass kicked the whole fight, if I remember correctly the scoring was close. What happened was an accident, and it obviously hurt alot of people that day.

you could even hear Sugar Ray Leonard say just when you thought Kim was done, he fought back and made him change his mind. It was a close fight, ultimately it was Kim's fighting spirit that made him keep coming back which extended the fight and eventually caused the permanent damage.
Its a shame that not only did it end Kim's life, but the life of his mother, the referee, and basically the career of Boom Boom Mancini.

Considering that time clouds memory, and I was 16 at the time of that fight, I watched the clip. My memory was of Mancini beating the snot out of Kim. I guess Kim was holding his own, until Mancini landed that last combo.

I was 9 when that happened. I have faint memories watching the fight, but the news that he died sticks out in my mind very much, even today.
The UFC seems safe to me because prolonged beatings don't happen much in those fights. But I wonder how long until....
How in the world can you fix something... If you don't know how it's supposed to work?

It just shows you that even the toughest guys can get killed with a real good punch. You don't realize when you fight that you could potentially kill the person if you hit them, they fall and bust there head on something.
Scary.

After I got home from work last night, I watchd the Boom Boom Mancini story on ESPN Classic. Afterwards, they had the movie "Champion" which was a Korean movie about Kim, but it was subtitled and I could only watch so much.
"The Browns' defense is kicking mucho dupa."
