I’m sure it will be framed that way. You do have to wonder, though, if you’re a citizen over there why all these various news media groups get shut down and the only ones left are blatantly pro-Putin.
Sounds like cancel culture is alive and well in Russia too. What a coincidence. The left works the same in Russia that they do here! Interesting!

I can't imagine McDonald's/Netflix/BK/BP/Caterpillar/Adidas/MasterCard/Visa/Starbucks etc is going to pay their Russian employees or can afford to not have revenue coming in from Russia/Ukraine for a long period of time. I really hope these companies are not going to go bankrupt themselves or increase prices to the point we won't be able to afford anything.
Question: if Russia has a stronghold on gas and fertilizer and everyone pulling out of Russia & Ukraine is not buying anything... Could we cause the world to go into a massive recession because of rapid inflation?
Good job Putin. people forget that if Ukraine gets accepted into the EU during this time frame, individual EU nations can really start pumping up military equipment there. This could potentially open the door to a swift NATO integration, due to the fact that the EU can use emergency funds to help boost Ukraines military spending, thus helping some of the requirements to enter NATO, especially under current conditions.
Thanks, Putin. you reunited the west and now the news that biden and the EU are literally on the same page with sanctions and trade deals, the US is back to being the undisputed global leader.

I doubt it. you keep forgetting that there are plenty of other countries to purchase goods from. Russia had a stronghold due to geographical convenience. with investing in renewable energy, trade agreements with other countries, and investments between allies, there's a chance that the world goes into an economic boom more than a recession. spreading out (diversifying) where you get your goods stabilizes and/or increases the markets overall. allowing a country to be a stronghold due to putting your eggs in one basket (russia) is how recessions start. right now Russia is going the way of Venezuela, and they absolutely deserve it.

While I have a tendency to overlook the short-term in order to predict the long-term, this is what I see as well. I see other locations seizing the opportunity to fill voids (we're already rebuilding supply chains right now), world trade rebalancing, and the US finally getting serious about moving off of oil. This whole ordeal is a situation 99.99% of America, regardless of affiliations, can point to and say "this is why we need to reduce dependence on oil".

I wish I shared your optimism about this. I remember the long gas lines in the 70's. We have always watched the roller coaster ride of gas prices due to the volatility of crude oil prices. We've been dependent on OPEC and gas prices based solely on their production in many cases. Looking t it from a global perspective America is way behind the curve in the purchase of EV's.
Of the 6.5 million EVs sold in 2021, 3.2 million EVs were sold in 2021 to mainland China, 2.3 million EVs were sold in Europe, and 535,000 were in the United States.
I fully understand people that travel long distances who can afford only one vehicle are still leery of buying an EV. For two car families, for the life of me I have no clue why one of them isn't an EV. For decades this nation has seen what happens to oil prices. They see that when OPEC cuts production oil prices go through the roof. One would think people would actually want our country to become self sufficient and not be so dependent on the oil market.
But what I've seen so far is that it seems people have found a better alternative. Keep doing everything they can to remain dependent on oil. Keep buying all gasoline vehicles. Refuse to do their part in reducing our dependence on oil and blame the politicians instead of themselves. Meanwhile the citizens of Europe and China are figuring it out. The days of "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country" are long gone my friend. Sadly....

I heard pieces of an interview with an oil company executive recently who raised a good point. Countries like Russia and China, for all of their faults, have a distinct advantage in that they don't change leadership, they can create an energy plan that goes out decades and they can stick to it. (It might not be "good" but at least it's consistent) In the US, ours changes, often dramatically, every 4-8 years.
His point was that, within the oil and gas industry, exploration is expensive, setting up drilling rigs is expensive, complying with changing regulations is often very expensive, and that they make this investment, never sure if things are going to completely change before they even get a chance to get started. He was honest and joked about not feeling "TOO sorry for them" because they are still doing really well... but his point seemed fairly valid that we could be a lot more efficient and effective if they knew what plan they were setting up to meet. That the oil companies could adjust to accommodate almost any plan but the constant change is difficult.
There is a bit of disingenuousness in his claims because the oil industry is a major player in getting administrations elected that are friendly to their goals so they are a big part of these policy shifts happening.... so they are certainly not without blame for their own "struggles"...
But if we could come up with, and get on the same page with, a 20 year plan to transition us away from fossil fuels to more renewable energy and how that's going to work, and then stick to it, we would all be better off.
As to everything but your last paragraph I agree completely. Actually I even agree with that in principal just not so much with the expectation of execution. The problem is we have two very different factions among our voters as well. We have one side for the most part whose answer is "Drill baby drill!" and the other side that promotes moving away from fossil fuels. I do however feel that having two opposite views is pretty much politically motivated. At the present time I think we need a combination of the two with the replacement for the most part of far less need of fossil fuels as time passes as the final goal.
A 20 year plan certainly sounds great in theory. But when you have two very distinctively different ways of moving forward among the voting population I don't see it as a realistic expectation. It only makes sense to me that we have a comprehensive plan to remove ourselves away from the volatile oil market as quickly as possible. We can't do that by drilling our way out of it. Yet the times we live in our political system promotes dividing us more than uniting us for the better good of our country and its future. So here we are.

We won't really solve anything but it is refreshing to have an actual debate about a topic of importance rather then the typical dung slinging. That used to be far more common on this board back in the day. Fine by me.

I can’t help but wonder what the pros and cons are to NATO running up in Belarus. We’re technically not in Ukraine, and we didn’t invade Russia. Obviously that can spark WW3….but it’s also possible it ends the invasion into Ukraine.

Putin calls in reinforcements: 16,000 Middle Eastern fighters to join Russian invasion of Ukraine
Russia has approved the use of thousands of fighters from the Middle East to join the invasion of Ukraine.
Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said there were 16,000 volunteers who wanted to come to fight alongside Russian-backed forces in the breakaway Donbass region. One fighter in Iraq reportedly claimed he had been offered $400 a week to sign up.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said they wanted to come “of their own accord, not for money" adding: "We need to give them what they want and help them get to the conflict zone."
Fighters are believed to have been offered $400 (£300) a week to join Russian forces, Nikkei Asia reports.
Ali Jafar Askar, 35, is a member of Iraqi militia Asaib Ahl al-Haq, and told the publication he had been offered the money. He said: "Now is the time to fight imperialism and defeat it."
Mohammed al-Saqir, 40, a member of another Iraqi militia, said he had been offered the same sum.
While Putin gave the green light to recruit foreign fighters in its invasion of Ukraine, Russian state press agency TASS said they were not considering bringing in Russian volunteers.
A Kremlin spokesperson said: "Sergei Dhoigu mainly talked about those applicants who applied from the Middle East, from Syria. Accordingly, there was no talk of our fellow citizens."
They added they did not have information on whether Russian volunteers could be recruited at a later date.
Meanwhile Ukraine's plea for a no-fly zone above Ukraine has been denied by Nato.
I thought about that. I suppose you run the risk of still engaging Russian forces directly there. Would make for an interesting problem for Russia, though? Do they reallocate forces? Do they double down on Ukraine.
What wouldn’t be put of the question - in my mind at least - is striking specific targets in Belarus, that we know are just germane to their military, should Russia move forward with something escalatory, like chemical attacks or whatnot.

man, do you know how crap your invasion plans had to be if you needed to recruit mercenaries from the middle east in order to have any chance of occupation?
so much for that russian strength.

Seriously... I looked at that story 3 times because I figured it had to be fake... can't believe they have to bring in hired guns
i would've called off the invasion if i'm watching my equipment get hauled by a tractor cause my soldiers surrendered/got they asses beat.

Watch a handful of countries, including us, suddenly do a massive about-face on our involvement in Ukraine.
Well, I also read that there might have been an ulterior motive for Russia leading up to this. About a decade or so ago, there was some exploration into the black sea for nat gas and there was a huge find-somewhere they believe between 4-13 trillion cubic feet. Part of that find would have belonged to Crimea (already invaded) and the rest would have belonged to Ukraine. But that number lost in the Crimea invasion is significant-about 75 to 80% of their Black Sea holdings.
Also, there were some shale finds in both western and eastern Ukraine. And according to a global shale tracker below
"Ukraine has an estimated 127.9 trillion cubic feet of unproved technically recoverable shale gas resources, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).1 The most promising shale reserves appear to be in the Carpathian Foreland Basin (also called the Lviv-Volyn Basin), which extends across Western Ukraine from Poland into Romania, and the Dnieper-Donets Basin in the East (which borders Russia). However, the full extent of these reserves is yet to be proved. The Ukrainian parliament appointed Volodymyr Demchyshyn as Minister of Energy and Coal Industry in 2014.2 It remains to be seen to what extent the new government will prioritize shale gas development in the country."
Ukraine has been a poor country with lots of corruption. It seems as of late, they were trying to fix the poor part bringing in global companies to start tapping some of their reserves and generating some serious income.
It was stated in the article that I read a couple months back that putin did not want that to happen. He was worried that his buffer state was gone and with oil and gas money, Ukraine would be looked at more favorably by the EU and might be a much bigger player in the region.
And when putin went into Crimea, he seized the reserves...a sea of oil
so, i can't be the only one who's noticed this development within the last week....
i dunno about you guys, but im really bothered by Israel openly welcoming Russian oligarchs trying to skate the sanctions into their country. it just doesn't sit right with me. they're out here giving safe haven to our enemy while taking in billions of US dollars every year.
it sucks because any government official who points that out will get labeled as anti semitic, even though its not a shot at the religion but just the israeli government.

Using the anti anti-semitic card is what they always do any time you criticize the Israeli government. They try to tie their government into their religion as a way of silencing people about the atrocities the Israeli government has been engaged in. They'll use it again in this instance as well. You are 100% correct in this case. There's no excuse to let Israel get away with this without employing sanctions.

People in the US government probably talked Israel into it in exchange for some kind of concession/payment from the Russians. Plausible deniability for "us", and like you said Israel has that card to play.
It really bothers me that that seems well within the realm of possibility.
You mess with the "Bull," you get the horns. Fiercely Independent.
That's the thing, almost anything is possible. It's when you get into the realm of likelihood and probability where people often times run into problems.
