I get big time choppiness in the larger servers, it's ok in servers with not many players. But I like to play on the big servers, and I have to play on a very low screen resolution (too embarrassing to mention)
My video card is 3 years old obviously it needs upgraded, my system meets the other requirments so I figure this should solve the issue. Anyone have any suggestions on a decently priced good brand that will give me bang for the buck? Thanks in advance.
The X300 was underpowered when it was released so you're more than 3 years out of date in gaming terms. What are the specs of the rest of our system? Please be detailed. Meeting the requirements on the box is often not enough. They're trying to sell the game.
Without seeing the rest of your system specs, a 256MB Radeon 2600XT or GeForce 8600GT would probably be a great option at ~$100 shipped. If you can stretch out your budget a bit farther, the new Radeon HD 3850 is a killer card in the $160 range and a much better buy. It also comes with a voucher for Half-Life 2: Black Box (HL2: Episode 2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal).

An HD 3850 will be held back a bit by that CPU, but I think it's the best buy out there right now. It's fast and runs very cool. If you find yourself CPU limited, you can always crank up the effects until you're GPU limited
It's $169.99 shipped at Chiefvalue right now and I believe it comes with HL2 Black Box (HL2: Ep2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal) which makes it a great deal. It also looks like there's a coupon on the page for another $6 off, but it's expiring today: CPDCSLTFW84. $163.99 shipped is good.

Yeah, it's overclocked and will go higher still. My eVGA Superclocked goes to 700/1750/1000 but I've turned up the fan speed to 65% with RivaTuner.

All of them overclock pretty much the same. The $240 BFG at Best Buy is overclocked, too.

Yeah, PrplPplEater and I were debating this before, but at high resolutions nothing runs Crysis "maxed" right now. It's well ahead of the hardware. Everything else runs like butter though.
Enjoy.

That's an awesome price on the BestBuy deal.... man, I'm really wishing I hadn't gone overboard shopping for the nieces & nephews now, lol
Ahh, well..... I'll probably hold off until February.... nVidia's DX10.1 card (D9E) is supposed to be out then. I guess the biggest part of 10.1 is Mandatory 32-bit floating point filtering (the current standard is apparently still 16-bit), Mandatory 4x anti-aliasing and Shader model 4.1.... it'll give me time to save up and jump in with both feet on doing SLi with whatever is got a good price/performance ratio (not that it really matters though, I don't plan on jumping to Vista any time soon).

The funny part is people are also getting Best Buy to take the 10% and 12% rewards coupons floating around that are only supposed to work on regular price items. After tax, they're getting the cards for ~$220.
I think you're wise to wait. I just didn't want to get farther behind. I've been using a 7300LE on one rig and an X300SE on another rig for 6 months!

oh, I feel your pain... I'm on a 6800 ultra. I can't run too many things at high res or max settings any more.
the crazy thing is that for what I spent on the 6800 ultra 3 years ago, I can get probably 8 times the performance from two SLi'd 8800GT's

I've lost some faith in this game after reaching the end of One Shot, One Kill. It's enemy-spam level design at its worst.

You'll see. The level designers keep spamming the level with enemies until a rescue helicopter arrives. It's horrible and not fun at all. It's a nightmare on Hardened or higher difficulty but not so bad on Normal. I'm playing at Hardened level. Lazy lazy level design and it's a shame because it's a great level until that point. People are exploiting glitches to get through alive. That's what I'll probably do, too.

actually, they use that for a lot of the levels in various places.
You can't really clear a building from a distance, you have to cross over some invisible checkpoint to trigger it to stop spawning bad guys in the area you are going to next.
I noticed it most on the one level where you have to fight uphill and clear the farmhouses.... then again on the fight down.

welll yeah, that one is a bit more excessive, but they still use the same mechanism in many places.

I never said they didn't. Spamming has been a COD convention since the beginning but I was hoping they wouldn't take it to this extreme in COD4. Oh well. It's only one level. I'm either going to camp behind their spawn point or hid in the bumper car house.

I beat One Shot, One Kill on Veteran awhile back, it sure didn't feel like an accomplishment... There is no way that you can complete that level the "right" way, you're just stuck there hiding. I took a break, I've got the first two missions of Act 3 to finish on Veteran; No Fighting in the Control Room was tough enough on the easier difficulty.
I want the Cleveland Browns to be my pallbearers so they can let me down for the last time.

Well, I hid in the little shack next to the ferris wheel and went prone under the table. I finally lived through that level and completed the game before we left for the holidays. The end of No Fighting in the Control Room almost made me cry in frustration but only because I'm stubborn and kept doing the same thing over and over until I tried something different. Very cool last chapter of the game and the ending is amazing. Probably the best I've seen in a while.

The ending is pretty sweet...it actually made me kinda pissed because you go through the whole game with'em and then bam...kinda sucks but it's sweet. I've still yet to beat it on Vet.
you had a good run Hank.

i think i might have to pick this game up...
i didn't realize call of duty 4 was "modern warfare"
the ww2 games were becoming enough, it seemed like a lot of the war games were ww2...
i've never played a call of duty game, but i've played battlfield, and the medal of honor series, and dabbled a bit in counterstrike type games...
i watched some previews of cod4 online and it looks awesome...

I thought the same thing, I was just prepared to stick with COD1 as usual, then I saw my buddy playing this one on PS3 and that was enough... You wont be disappointed.

This is, by far, the best shooter i've ever played.
It's hard and gives you the sense of a real battle *Which, if this is how a battle really is, thank God i'm not in the Marines/Army*
There is nothing like taking cover behind a wall and watching bullets flying at you through the wall. It's creepy.
you had a good run Hank.

My stepson got it for me, good thing I dropped hints eh? So far been playing the single player mission, adjusting to the game play, I still have a problem noticing the grenade warning icon , but I'm getting better. Also, realize I need to plug in my headphones, since I play after the wife goes to bed, and I can't turn it up too loud, I seem to be missing alot commands and spending alot of time killing enemies, when I could just hit my checkpoint and move on. So far, so good though. I'm running it on high detail, but turned shadows off, since I got occasional frame freeze for a second every now and then, but I'm also at 1280 x 1024, may lower to 1024 x 768 tonight and see how it is. any of you guys get past the "one shot, one kill" mission?
i'm having an impossible time getting past the final standoff at the ferris wheel
i shoot, and shoot and shoot, but it seems like they just eventually get you and the time that it takes for your helicopter to arrive is forever
some of the walkthroughs i've read are absolute trash
one guy says to hide in the shack until the helicopter arrives, and sometimes you don't get killed with a grenade when you're hiding, and even if you don't get hit, as soon as you get out from the shack, you're toast
any help you guys can lend?

I planted the claymores from the center of the area around to the right. Then I went and crouched behind the bucket on the ferris wheel, mostly watching the center and the right. (It seems most of the enemies come from the right side)
Then about half way through I move over toward the grassy ridge with the "trainer" and went prone next to a tree.
Watch your right side and that little shack. You will get a few guys that come around the dodg'em and they take 1 or 2 shots at you then toss a grenade, take them out before they toss the grenade. Same with the guys that some around the shack.
Also, I dropped my pistol and picked up an enemy machine gun before I got in there. This gave me faster firing and more ammo. You need to single shoot though, don't spray and pray, conserve your ammo.
Then one the helo lands, pick up your trainer and go around the right between the ferris wheel and the shack and let the arriving force take on the bad guys while you get in the helo, You will need to duck to get in.

Try reading a few posts up Just hide under the table in the little shack and shoot anyone who walks/lays in front of the doorway. I know you said this is crap strategy, but it works if you're patient. When the chopper lands, grab the gimp and run.

it's not crap, it just doesn't work
most times, i end up dying because somehow, a grenade gets to me...
or, time lets up, so i throw a few flashbangs out, and try to make a run for any kind of cover possible...

If you hide behind one of the Ferris Wheel buckets, it works. You just have to pick them off from afar. It's hard and only played it once *because I HATED that mission*

http://youtube.com/v/tu9zzkVWfuwthis walkthrough helped me out the most... my game was saved right before the helicopters deliver the last batch of bad guys i had 6 c4 thingies left, and made the best of it, and i did it about the same way he did, although i had to exchange gunfire while i hid in the alley between the buildings, you have to dodge some grenades, and deal with 1 or 2 dogs, but it was easier than anything else seriously, they shouldnt make levels like that, the entire level up until that standoff was so great, so awesome, and they ruined it with an over the top unfair fight... what a weight off my shoulders, i was really going nuts

I just planted all of my mines in front of the Ferris Wheel in random places and then sat on the hill near your other guy and picked them off from there. I got this on the first try and didn't really ever get hit that much.

that was a cool mission...did the ending without dying...
put a crap load of claymores in between all of the cars, more towards the left side ( in hind sight the right side would have been better) then i went prone on the landing of the ferris wheel, where i had a shot at the guys on the far right...
i shot most of them from far away, but a few got behind me from the right side...had to jump up and shoot them...
as soon as i got the signal, i picked up that dude and ran for the chopper....
