Joe Biden writes essay about his speech impediment

(CBS) The story of the stuttering monarch chronicled in "The King's Speech" continues to inspire.

Its screenwriter, David Seidler, has said King George's struggle to overcome his speech impediment compelled Seidler to write the movie.

Now Vice President Joe Biden has opened up about his struggles with childhood stuttering as a result of seeing the film.

In an essay for People magazine, Biden writes, "I was in 7th grade at St. Helena's and I still remember the reading: 'Sir Walter Raleigh was a gentleman...' I remember reciting, "Sir Walter Raleigh was a gentle man." The nun said, "Master B-B-B-Biden! What's that word?"

He writes that he broke sentences into smaller pieces and pronounced "gentleman" as "gentle man" to avoid stuttering.

"[A] couple of nuns taught me to put a cadence to my speaking, and that's why I spent so much time reading poetry - Emerson and Yeats. But even in my small, boys' prep school, I got nailed in Latin class with the nickname Joe Impedimenta. You get so desperate, you're so embarrassed."

When Beau Biden, the son of Vice President Joe Biden, died at the end of May, the nation, with the possible exception of Ted Cruz, mourned his loss.

This week, though, a man named Skip Brooks made one of the most touching gestures of all. First, Brooks—a former prosecutor in Delaware who had a speech impediment as a kid—tweeted this.


As the note from Biden reads,

Dear Brandon,

It was a pleasure meeting you yesterday. You are a fine — bright — young man with a great future ahead of you if you continue to work hard. Remember what I told you about stuttering. You can beat it just like I did. When you do, you will be a stronger man for having won. Also remember, every time you are tempted to make fun of someone with a problem, how it feels when you are made fun of. Treat everyone with respect and you will be respected yourself.

Brooks went on to write that after Biden noticed that the eighth-grader had a stutter, he took him aside and told the youngster that Biden never let his own stutter interfere with his life goals and that he would go out of his way to speak in public or act in plays in order to force himself to overcome his impediment.


And more proof that this exchange actually happened.


At the time, Biden was a U.S. senator from Delaware, and the gesture he made—and the time it took him to write the letter—is heartwarming. But the story gets better.

Biden, or whomever runs Biden’s Twitter account, noticed Brooks’s tweet and responded in kind.


And then, the heartwarming conclusion.


But these kinds of tales aren’t necessarily so rare for Biden and his former First State constituents. As Brooks told the Daily Mail, “In Delaware, everybody has a Joe Biden story.”

I am not on either side, but the constant name-calling, labeling, bullying, ganging-up to attack anyone w/an opposing opinion, and constant use of insults by several posters on the left is a very bad look and extremely off-putting.

I never make fun of people for having bad opinions - I make fun of people for having bad facts....

People are entitled to their own opinion - they should, at first, be corrected when they quote bad facts (we all have things we don't know -- which is not something you should be embarrassed about). Then they should be ridiculed when they continue to assert things that are demonstrably wrong.

You know -= my comment wasn't about bashing or protecting Biden - it was about "Palus Politicus" and taking a jest and trying to show manufactured outrage. I'm no Biden defender - but I have clicked on two recent videos posted that do nothing but mock the man's speech impediment. So there's that.

I was not thinking of you when I made my observation. In fact, I actually enjoyed the discourse I had w/you and Jester on the Mass Killings thread. We did not really agree w/one another, but the talk was civil and I thought it was productive. In my previous post, I think I used a phrase similar to "several posters on the left." It's undeniable that they resort to those tactics. I will say that I do not ever visit political sites and rarely follow political commentary. So, I imagine that there are many other places where those on the right our far more insulting than those on the left. I remember back in the day how hateful souls like Rush Limbaugh turned me off and only reinforced my belief that those on the right fought dirty. On this particular site, the ugly people by a large majority are on the left and they only weaken their position in the eyes of those who wish for honesty and fairness when they resort to such underhanded tactics.

There have been 50+ incidences of his dementia since 2:19.

A joke, for the most part. But honestly, trying to explain away Biden's problems as a speech impediment is absolutely absurd.

So you were called Vile. Was that acceptable? Does the person that called you vile spend multiple posts each week talking about how other posters call people names? When I was called Evil in multiple posts over and over - I didn't respond other than to highlight the hypocrisy - and I will continue to do that. If the person who called you vile ever started making posts about not name calling etc - I'd think you'd be 1000% justified in calling them out each time they do it.

Considering the source it was more funny than anything.

Ah, the morality police has arrived! The guy who goes around whining that he's a victim. The guy who rates posts as "good post" or "evil" like he's talking to children in a classroom. The guy who decides what is mean and who is mean. The one who constantly chides those on the left while ignoring those on the right. I find this hilarious. In a thread about Jan. 6th the best they can come up with is they think Biden is senile. Even if it were true maybe it's a better option than Trump.

I mean Biden isn't spreading lies to incite people to try to overthrow our election results. He isn't sewing the seeds of chaos and discord purposefully around our nation. He isn't calling anyone and everyone who disagrees with him nasty names and making up lies about them. He isn't paying off porn stars and lying about it. I could keep going but everyone with a brain understands what pond scum Trump is.

But hey, the only thing they can do to address Jan. 6th is try to distract you from the reality of it.

And then they ask something stupid like "Who's really running the country?" They must have forgotten how any of this is supposed to work. Unlike trump, normal presidents appoint experts to advise them because they understand there are just too many topics, international policies, health topics, education policies and several other things that they need experts to fill them in on the details in order to better make informed decisions.

Unless you have that dictator mentality that you expect blind loyalty, you will only surround yourself with people who agree with everything you say and always agree with you no matter how nutty the things you say are. Anyone who disagrees with you, you fire and call names.

The sad part about this Daman, is that you and I both know what a POS Trump is and that he has gotten away with this crap several times. And this time they have it ALL. We've had the documented proof in two impeachment hearings and as you pointed out, Trump got away with it. Both times, the results were rigged in the Senate... Republicans unwilling or not heroic enough to vote for Truth was the reason those actions failed..

If I understand this right, this time, no politicians will be involved.... Only courts. Just my guess, but the events will go something like this.

Jan 6 committee will hold open hearings.

AG will indicted Trump

Trials will commence.

Outcome TBD.

So this time, between NY and the Federal Governments, they might just have him.

Withholding funds already appropriated and telling a foreign government to dig for dirt on a political rival as a favor - that's as black and white as it gets. Politics got in the way for all but a handful of Republicans. Don't hold your breath on Jan 6th - despite what might seem obvious, proving motive and intent in a court of law based on anything less than black and white text or testimony is just not going to happen. No matter how many smoking guns - no matter the amount of circumstantial or even coincidence evidence. I'd lower your expectations and claims.

That and telling Georgia election officials to "find the votes" he needs to win the election in their state. What a crooked POS.
