Crennel not on watch list
Team’s record helps coach’s chances to stay

Saturday, November 24, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Phil Savage keeps calling Romeo Crennel the “right man for the right time.”

Few heads were nodding in the affirmative when the Browns’ general manager was saying that about the head coach in August.

Now? If Crennel’s future was put to a fan vote, there’s little doubt he would win re-election to at least a one-year term beyond 2007.

Crennel has never acted worried about impeachment.

At 60, having coached on Super Bowl teams at three other stops, he’s comfortable with who he is, even if his 10-22 record through two years with the Browns made thousands — some within the organization — uneasy.

In terms of enjoying his first shot at head coaching any team at any level, he seemed to enjoy the two building years as much as was possible.

He found a reason to smile every day then. Now, with the team on the verge of its sixth win in its last eight games, his disposition is all the sunnier.

If his team beats Houston Sunday — and if Tennessee loses at Cincinnati — the Browns will be ahead in the wild-card standings.

Crennel, who grew up living all over the place in a military family and who has lived the nomadic life of a coach, is sounding like a man who has found a home.

“I’m glad we have (Houston) here at our place in front of our fans,” he said Friday, in a particularly ebullient mood the day after Thanksgiving. “I know our fans are going to be excited.”

He was willing to come a few feet off the “same-as-any-other-game” jargon. He knows the town is juiced about the prospect of going to Arizona with a 7-4 record.

“It’s going to be crucial for us,” he said.

This was a crucial year for Crennel. Odds were he wouldn’t survive it. National publications saw the Browns in a 6-10 vein, or worse. Such a record would have been right on the firing line.

Beating the underdog Texans, though, makes the Browns one of the hottest teams this side of Foxboro.

Crennel still has a lot to prove. He was supposed to be a defensive whiz, but that unit is ranked No. 32.

On the other hand, Crennel’s long background as a special teams coach counts for something. Joshua Cribbs and the return game have been more consistent than the team’s surprising offense, viewed as a Rob Chudzinski-Derek Anderson thing.

On the other hand, Crennel came into 2007 needing to prove he could handle himself in the AFC North, where he was winless last year. This year: 3-2.

He had been a big disappointment at Cleveland Browns Stadium, where he was 2-6 in ’06. This year: 4-1.

He’s humble about the home-field advantage.

“Like I tell the players all the time,” he said, “it’s not an advantage unless we make it an advantage.

“The energy the home crowd has flows over to the field. If we make plays, then it will be an advantage.

“It does feel good to be able to win at home in front of your fans. I think everybody feels good when that happens.”

Not everybody in Browns Nation feels great about Crennel, even now. But by the end of 2006, did anybody?

I don't see much chance of Romeo being dumped after this season.

If a team can bring a coach down, a coach also gets to go along for the ride....just the way it goes.

There is enough positive stuff I can focus on to forget Romeo is our HC.

No, because that leaves us at a respectable 9-7 and with this D that would be pretty damned good.

I agree.

The only way Romeo gets canned at this point is if we collapse the rest of the way.

I think at this point RAC has earned the right to continue coaching this team - hopefully a much improved team next year.

He is still lacking in some areas that concern me, but I really like him in other areas.

My hope is that Savage will do what he's done the last couple of years and bring us a nice infusion of talent while at the same time RAC starts coming into his own as a coach and starts to correct some of these mistakes he makes.

I figure he is still learning on the job.

I do like how the players rally behind him and play hard for him. That's important.

But our schedule won't always be this easy. We can really start to be on the losing end of some of these close games next year, and those games could come down to in-game coaching/managing...something I think RAC is lacking in.

Just like everyone else, he will need to look in the mirror this offseason, and say 'what do I need to do to get better?'.

If he doesn't do that, we could be in trouble.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Romeo has been the "Rock" that this team has needed. Our defense isn't as good as I'd like it but we are still missing a few key impact players. Take a look at some of the young guys that had a chip on there shoulders when he came here, K2, Braylon mainly. They are now acting as true professionals on and off the field. Crennel has always kept his cool even when some of the fans and media turned on him, and he never lost his composure. He's certainly done enough "good" things in my book to want to keep him here long enough to see where he can take us. Good job Romeo.

That's probably true, but what gets me is that some don't see the intangibles that RAC brings,, winning attitude, no excuses... Personally, I'm convinced that he is the main cog in the wheel that has made men out of Edwards and Winslow.

Some folks either don't remember or won't admit the mess this team was in when Davis left, and what had to be done to fix it.. A Complete tear down and rebuild was called for and it's what we are in the middle of..

Somehow they get it in thier heads that RAC = Bad but since there are so many positives, they'll talk about them and live with the thought that RAC will be here another year.

I don't know, perhaps it's just me, but I like to give reasonable men the time they say they need to fix a problem before I completly hang them out to dry.. again, that's probably just me.

I know this is a Crennel thread, but after seeing the FA players Dawg in Dayton mentioned, it has me excited for the players the Browns can get going into next year to improve an already good team. And players for Crennel to work with like he had in New England and for the Giants.

I believe the Browns will have the money to get players like Suggs, Turner, Haynsworth or Kelly. I believe they have alot of money under the salary cap now, this year.

Plus they should have the money to resign Anderson, or match any offer since he is restricted. Although, I would be happy with the draft picks for him and go with Quinn. I still want Quinn to spend one more year learning on the bench or as an injury replacement should Anderson get hurt. Look at the QBs who learned on the bench; Mcnair for 3 years, Rivers for 2 years, Palmer for 1 year, Romo for 3 years, Brady for 2 or 3 years. Plus, the Browns save money towards the salary cap if Quinn doesnt reach incentives. However, if and when he reaches those incentives, it will be money well spent because he is doing something right to earn that playing time.

They will also have money to resign Chaun Thompson. I hope they dont just give him a 1 year deal alot of restricted FAs get. Maybe he will sign a 3 year deal, with fair market price, for job security. Much like Savage did with Cribbs and Bodden. Savage did that with Andra Davis, but Davis seemed to take a step back after signing the bigger deal. Thompson hasnt been getting much props because Butch Davis reached for him a round or two too early. He is a good asset off the bench. He can play inside and outside LB in the 3-4. Heck, Thompson tied the team in sacks the year before Wimbley was drafted. He has experiance in the 4-3. He is also a big contributer on specail teams. With his experiance and fimiliarity with the team, I think he is a keeper. Worry about the d-line. Peek is also a great backup. The problem is, McGinnest is a great team leader in the locker room, but i think his footwork has slowed down too much to keep him around as a player and count him against the salary cap. If he does retire, that money could be spent on getting Suggs. For those Savage naysayers, Willie was signed only after Bart Scott, a DE from Detroit that Phil wanted to swith to OLB, and Harrison from Pittsburgh decided to take less money to stay with their current team. Phil might not have brought in the best talent on defense, but look at the players that turned down his offer to play for the Browns and stay with their current team. Add Aaron Kampman to that list who is tearing it up in Green Bay. He was not a household name but was one of Phils top targets a couple years back.

The Browns should also have more to show for their money because Baxter will be a UFA (probabley a huge reason on why Baxter wanted to come back too soon from 2 torn tendons in his knee). Heck, if hes healthy he might re-sign for a cheap one year deal to prove himself again. Although Baltimore would be smart to do the same. Maybe Baltimore adds another year or more money. Also, Bentley was the biggest signed FA and the highest paid from 2 years ago. After sitting out for 2 years, he should be healthy enough to participate in training camp next year. With Fraley doing a great job manning the center position, Bentley can step in Seth Mckinneys old guard spot, since McKinney only signed a one year deal. Thats where Bentley came into the NFL anyways. With Savages patience keeping around high price injured players (like Winslow when alot of people wanted to cut ties), he will finally be able to put a product on the field that he envisioned when he signed him.
With Bentley being able to play and with Baxters high priced payroll ( he was a top paid FA CB that year) off the books, the browns will have more to show for the money they spent. Baxter has yet to play a full season since he signed, so I see ties being cut with him.

This will be a huge FA season for Savage. Especially since they dont have a 1st round pick (we'll see what happens with Anderson). If the Browns keep winning their first pick in the draft will be a mid to late 2nd rounder. That pick will have to be the best CB or d-lineman available. Since alot of prospect will be off the board, the FA market will have to be spent on defesne. If savage cant get the best d-lineman, then getting Suggs would make up for some of that.

If your speaking of Tom Brady, he was drafted then started in his second years to replace the injuryed Drew Bledsoe... 1 year and a game or two is all he sat before replacing Bledsoe for good.

Not that it really matters, but here's the link to that info

If we split, that's still 9-7.

Much better than the so-called experts predicted and many of us predicted. Romeo isn't going anywhere, and I am one guy who is happy about that. Besides, you change head coaches and more than likely it affects the rest of the staff. Chud has a good thing going, our special teams are about tops in the NFL, and Grantham......uhhhh well that one I can leave alone.

I am slowly warming up to this line of thinking...although I remain skeptical at many of his decisons.

In any event, this team certainly is starting to look, act, walk, & talk like a team and the young studs have become quite professional-like.

Credit for that MUST go to Romeo. (Where is the crow-eating graemlin?)

The only real improvement I have seen from Romeo is the team seems more prepared for Sunday.

Clock management still sucks. Going prevent against the Ravens when the blitz kept them to no first downs for 29 mins was moronic and right out of the Butch Davis philosophy.

I would expect the head coach to be the first one screaming at the refs that the kick hit the crossbar not the first one to start shaking hands and accepting defeat.

Just like the first Dawson kick, I just dont know why you allow Phil to attempt that kick when you only need about 4 inches for a first down.

I believe we are winning despite Romeo. I havent seen him do much to help this team win.

The New York Yankees are the perfect example of that its more than about signing the biggest names....

It's about playing like a team. That's what Romeo emphasizes with HIS team, and that is why I like him as our coach. He knows we don't have the best players in the league at every position, but he understands that with hard work and execution, the Browns can get that tough Win.

Go Browns!!!!

I remain in agreement with this line of thinking...although I am pleased that our guys act like pros and we are 6-4.

In any event, this team certainly appears to sometimes only do just well enough to win in spite of a horribly inaccurate QB and a Coach who is awful at many of the few things I can actually see that a HC must do and make an evaluation upon.

Blame for that MUST go to Romeo. (Where is the fire RAC graemlin?)

I think my last two Sybil-like posts in this thread accurately depict where I am in my opinion/evaluation of RAC.

My only concern with RAC is with our D. I understand he is not the Defensive Coach, but being a so called Defensive Guru, he should have some say.

I know we are not very talented on that side of the ball, but I would think being dead last in the league would not sit well with a defensive minded coach.

There is talent on the D side. We have been bringing in players that fit an aggressive blitzing philosophy. We spent 90% of the season playing pure vanilla soft zone. When we bring 6 we are getting to the QB and forcing turnovers. We bring 4 and we get torched.

Its no coincidence that in the last 2 games we have been more aggressive and have produced both sacks and turnovers. The points we have given up is when we go back to the soft zone.

The difference this year is that the Browns are now in a position to win games, and yes sometimes a lucky bounce, or a single play is the difference between a win and a loss,. Dawson has been on both ends of the coin this year.

At least the Browns are much more competitive this year than last. Aside from the opening game blowout, this team has been much more fun to watch, and the challenges that come with losing have disappeared.

We would all like to see better defensive play, we would like to have the ability to predict if Anderson or Quinn is the long term answer, but some of the important moves made by Savage/Crennel, e.g. Thomas, Wright, Anderson, Lewis, Steinbach, Cribbs, Wembley, Vickers, Fraley, Zastudil, JJ and Edwards, are beginning to suggest that a team can be built.

We can point to the backfire moves, e.g. Frye, Dilfer, Washington, and some of the late round draft choices that did not pan out, but for the most part the positive moves outweigh the negative ones. And the one thing that is becoming apparent is that the Browns are no longer failures at picking players in the first and second round. That is important.

I can't put Bentley as being a negative one, you cannot predict injury.

There is some talent, but not enough. I'm sorry, when Kyle Boller is able to have a 300 yard passing game against you, you have pass defense issues.

We got sacks and we got turnovers against Baltimore, and we still struggled to stop them. There is a problem with the defense, and all I am saying is that a "Defensive Guru" should not be happy with his defense in last place.

I'm not slamming RAC, I am just expressing my concern with him.

I'd be flabberghasted if the talk started about Romeo on the hot seat again...

The guy that needs to be canned is Grantham. I think Romeo should take over the playcalling duties on defense. JMHO.

I'm still amazed at the number of fans who praise Phil, while simultaneously lambasting Romeo as a coach who's lacking essential elements that make for a successful NFL HC.

They praise Phil as an excellent talent evaluator. This would be the same Phil Savage who said that Romeo Crennel is “right man for the right time.”

Either Phil is an excellent talent evaluator, or he isn't. You can't have it both ways, no matter how badly you want to.

Face it- this team is prospering because of the combined efforts of all on this team... and that includes RAC. 'Cause you can't have it both ways.

I choose to believe Phil, other GM's, NFL-level players and coaches who universally praise Romeo over other board posters who may or may not know any more about the inner workings of a professional football team than I do.

*** They've said he should be replaced because he lacks "fire." Recent vidbytes on the sidlines and in the locker room after games refute that. The "RAC Attack" is well documented, from both our players, and Pats players who served under his command. Evidence suggests that Crennel has "fire" aplenty.

*** They say that a lack of cohesion on the team is the fault/responsibility of the HC. ALL players roundly praise him as an influential and effective leader in that regard. The team has come together in ways that they haven't since The Return... and the results are showing with young (formerly loose) cannons like K2 and BE and the rest of the team. The results are also showing in the box scores.

*** They say that he makes bad decisions during games. I've agreed on occasions, but I've also seen fewer as time progressed. Rookie HC's have a learning curve, too.

*** They say that Romeo is too loyal to incumbents to be successful... yet we've heard NOTHING about him trying to dissuade Phil from trading Carlie Frye (or any other player) when the handwriting on the wall had dried. To date, we've heard NOTHING to suggest that Romeo tried to keep Carthon when his handwriting dried. All we've ever heard is reciprocal support for and from Romeo and Phil. Trust me, Dawgs... if there was ANYTHING to this, the media would have been all over it by now. That's what they get paid to do- for good or bad.

Bottom line: Our players respect him and play their asses off for him, the team is winning for the first time in a half decade, the media is off our backs, and our very own GM has just stepped up to publically offer his unqualified support.

Face it, "DownerDawgs"... you're fast running out of excuses, and your constant "anti-RAC" whining is starting to grate in everyone else's ears.

Honestly- I think that we could win 4 consecutive SB's, become the next NFL dynasty, and rewrite the frakkin' record books... and some of you would still maintain that it all happened in spite of the Head Coach.

You'd be wrong then... just as you're wrong now. But go ahead, with your bad selves... don't let a little thing like facts get in your way.

I'm sooooo beyond this subject. Deadbate this issue all you want, but your reality is this: Romeo ain't goin' anywhere before his original contract is satisfied... and if this team is at or near the top, he'll get an extension.

Take your meds, practice meditation, or drink heavily... whatever it takes- but deal with it.

Romeo is easily the worst in-game coach in the NFL this year. He makes terrible adjustments, and is the worst at clock management. I think if he hired someone to manage the clock, and improved vastly on his in-game coaching, he would be able to work out for this team in the future.

Can't argue that, but I can state that with a new coach we might have switched coordinators again, changed back to the 4-3, and confused the hell out of everyone and been 2-8 at this point.

Continuity is a major reason we are seeing success this season.

I am sure RAC isn't happy with the defense being ranked last. But you have to admit... they have improved over the last few weeks... even if they can only sustain it for half a game. Since the players haven't changed, it has to be coaching that is making some adjustments. I have to believe that we will see a big difference in the D next year. There is no reason that Savage won't bring in new talent for the D just like he did for the O.

Romeo is easily the worst in-game coach in the NFL this year.

I don't know...read the Baltimore papers and they'll tell you Brian Billick holds that distinction.

Billick brought his team back from being down double digits in the 4th. We have outscored teams in the first half (144-148) yet let teams outscore us in the second half of games (150-140). We have to quit letting teams make adjustments then not making any adjustments for ourselves.

and I thought we came back on both the Seattle Seahawks and the St. Louis Rams..

It happens, teams come back...

Charlie Frye led us to a win against the Raiders and they were kicking our butts... Its football man!!

The past two weeks we have given up double digit leads late in the game. Should we have won the Ravens game? Yes, we have better players. Should we have won the Steelers game? Yes, we outplayed them and in my opinion, have better players. I think Romeo's ineptness is being hidden by the talent that we have on this team. Trust me, I'm glad we won, but I think right now, with a 'good' coach, like Butch Davis, we are 8-2. We probably have the easiest schedule in the history of football, and we do have talent on this team.

Was Billick an idiot for kicking to Cribbs, yes. I think he was being cocky myself, but stupid none-the-less.

It's funny how easy we forget when it's a certain agenda we want to push...

Let's go back three games..,, Down by 15 to the Rams,, we come back and win... Up by a bunch over the Steelers,,, they come back and wins. Then come the Ravens, we are up by double digits as you put it, they come roaring back, almost win the game but when it counted most, we did what we had to do and we won..

RAC took the heat for the Pittsburgh game and in my eyes, he's that kinda stand up guy that I want coaching the browns... But when you get into situations like this (and it happens) the guy who comes out on top is the guy I want... 2 out of 3,, RAC and the Browns came out on top.. for that matter, 6 out of 10 this year, RAC and the Browns have come out on top..

Sorry,, but I don't think you are correct about RAC... so I suspect it's better that we agree to disagree cause you ain't changing my mind!

Ok then,

RAC brought his team back in the Bengals game from a 1st quarter deficit.

RAC never even allowed the Rats to get into that game and beat them squarely.

RAC damn near allowed Miami to come from behind for a win but he held them off in that game.

RAC brought the team back from 14 points down in the Rams game for a win.

RAC brought the team back for an over-time win in the Seattle game.

And, last but not least, RAC brought his team back from behind in over-time to beat the Rats.

My point, why does Billick get the credit for bring his team back in a loss while RAC gets none for the 6 wins the Browns have.

That's my problem with the majority of fans who dis RAC. They give opposing head coaches all the credit for their wins while only giving RAC credit for our losses.

RAC is the head coach. Ultimately, everything falls back to his responsibility. That is credit for the wins as well as credit for the losses.

Some of you guys kill me with your agenda's and double standards regarding our head coach.
