Anyhow.... MENTOR VS. ST X in D 1 Mentor v Brunswick just went final and will be broadcast starting in 30 minutes on STO.... go CARDS!!!!! I'll post some articles when they are written tomorrow

ST X is sick, they have dismantled some really solid teams this season but the Cardinals were here last year and have the expierience on the big stage.

My wife and I were at her 10 year reunion last night for Ursuline and they announced their win. 2 local teams here in it with them and Mooney. I really don't like high school football, though because Catholic schools like those 2 basically recruit and become powerhouses. It really is lame. Then you have kids like Maurice Clarrett who went to Austintown Fitch, where I went to school, then transfers to Warren Harding, a team who was having more success.

This type of stuff happens in college, but is happening a lot more in highschool, and I really don't care for it because of that.

Ditto,...this is NO surprise. Do the public schools "recruit " -- sure they do, but they are SEVERELY limited to the confines of their districts, i.e. in Cleveland, Glenville can recruit across the great geographic spectrum, but is still fighting the likes of St Ed's, Iggy and others for blue chippers. Mentor, on the other hand, cannot go into the Cleveland Public School District and benefit from "open enrollment."

So, how do you explain that Mentor, A D-1 school -- and now in the D-1 FINAL, has lost to D-4 finalist Cardinal Mooney ??? Because Mooney and Ursuline both continue to benefit from "open recruiting" in the Steel Valley,....you cannot send your "blue chip" kid to Fitch when you live in Boardman,....but you sure as hell can send him to either of the 2 Catholic schools,....and maybe not even pay a dime.

I have no problem with good football kids from Youngstown going to either, but they should have to move up a division when they win a state title.

More like Mentor will be the only school in the State that's lost to both the D-1 and D-4 champs,...

Actually, last year, it was 2 public schools in the D-I final (Mentor-Hilliard Davidson). The year before that, it was 1 public, 1 private (Massillon Washington - Cincy St. X). The year before that, it was 2 public (Canton McKinley - Cincinnati Colerain). The year before that was 2 private (Cincinnati Elder - Lakewood St. Edward), but the year before that was 1 public, 1 private (Cincinnati Elder - Warren Harding). So, it may not be as bad as you think, at least in D-I.

My dad and I go to the D-I finals every year, so we've seen some great football. I'm excited to see St. Xavier vs. Mentor. I always pull for the NE Ohio teams (don't want to hear the Cincy people whining about how they have to travel sooooo far...).

I don't know about that. Marion Local has a great program too and while they don't play some of the bigger schools like Ursuline does they do play in the toughest small school conference in the State. Marion Local moved up to Div 5 this year but they were State Champs last year (2006) in Div 6 and also in 2000 and 2001 plus runner ups in 2003.

The University of Ursuline should be a Div III college. They aren't loaded like Mooney is but they have way more talent than any Div III school, let alone Div V. Beating them is possible, but highly unlikely unless they have a bad game. Private and parochial schools have a big advantage, especially when it comes to smaller high schools.

Wow Ohio is already in the state finals? Maybe PA is just slow. We're only in the 2nd round and my school plays the top team in the state. It's also a team in Pittsburgh so i really want to beat them.

Well if they have that much talent you'd think that they would play in the state championship game every year. This is Marion Local's 5th state championship game since the 2000 season compared to Ursuline's 2nd. Marion Local must be a division 1-AA college then.

The thing is they have to compete with the other local Catholic school. A few years ago when Mooney was down, Ursuline was unstoppable. Ursaline does not have thetalent of Mooney this year, but they have way too much talent for a typical Div. V school. I get upset that the private and Catholic schools are able to compete against other schools at an equal level because I think they have a far advantage over them. It is always a good thing when they lose.

Thanks P.

They are really my number 2 team though. I root for them cause they're just a few miles from me and my nephew plays on the freshmen team. My team, where i went to school and live at, went 8-2 this year and just missed the playoffs.

What an ending. Blocked extra point with 27 seconds to go.

Not that anyone cares but Mooney was without their starting QB/Safety, who is going to Notre Dame.

I was at the D-I game, and St. Xavier dominated in EVERY facet of the game.

Actually, I left with about 3 or 4 minutes left, but in all honesty, I do not believe Mentor EVER got the ball over the 50!

St. Xavier's running back, who has a full ride to Louisville, was downright tough. Only 5'9", but a tough guy to bring down.

It sucks for Mentor only because they are from the area. They were our biggest rival in HS so haha

No, I went to Euclid. I live in Willoughby now though. When I was there I remember the playoffs that Mentor ripped out our turf and then beat us.
