As well it should be... there are BUNCHES of teams with more talent and highly experienced and qualified coaching staffs & front offices that, as you would put it, fail every single year.

So here is a scenario that we have not discussed yet. Let's say Branch returns to Michigan, Thomas goes before our pick but Brady Quinn is available. Do we take him?

The likelyhood of Quinn dropping to the Browns, past Detroit and Oakland is non-existent.

I think the answer is no. We cant protect the QB, so putting another one back there is cannon fodder for the defense. We have seen 2 QB's go down this year. Until the OL is addressed and the Running Game is respectable, I don't think Marino/Montana/Farve could make this offense work.

I would say no.

Take that WR, or that Gaines Adams or whatever kid.. or just try to trade down.

Getting a QB does absolutely nothing for us IMO. All it will do is get us another high draft pick that we can toss onto the OLine Altar and declare a "bust" in 3 years.

Well I'm assuming that Adrian Peterson or Calvin Johnson went 1 or 2 along with Thomas. In this situation I'd try and find a trade first. Out of Brady Quinn, Adrian Peterson and Calvin Johnson there will be 2 of them there and I'd hope we can find and excellent trade. If we can't I'd draft Adrian before Brady. If Adrian is gone also, I'd look at Adams first. JMHO.

[color:"orange"] Even if we draft 4th, behind Oak, Det and TB it is not inconceivable (not likely but not impossible) that Quinn is available.

Oak could use o-line (Thomas), Wr (Johnson) and Rb (Peterson) as well as a Qb

Det could use 0-line help and possibly a Rb depending on the exrent of Jones' injury and you can never rule out Millen drafting a Wr.

TB Could use o-line help and Wr help.

Granted Quinn is not likely to be available and if none of these teams want him someone will trade up to get him but stranger things have happened. Who foresaw Rodgers falling to 24 and getting drafted by GB?

Now to the question. I don't know the answer and I have been a huge proponent of drafting line for years but it's hard to pass on a "franchise QB" when one is available. My problem with drafting Quinn is I am not sure he will be the best Qb in the draft - no not Troy, JaMarcus Russell. Anyway I know I am rambling but I do that when I haven't made up my mind. If there is no Thomas and no Branch and we cannot trade down I don't see anyone else right now who we would take. I like Woodley and Okoye but if I suggest taking either one at #3 right now I would get totally mocked on this board (but I suspect that will change by draft day). I don't think Adams is a goodoption for us. [/color]

If you don't have one........you NEVER pass on a franchise qb. However, there isn't a franchise qb in this draft.

Joe Thomas is the best player in this draft. I just hope he falls to us.

this team needs help everywhere...

I have rationalized to myself, it is Thomas, Peterson and Branch, in that order. One of them should be available.

Offensively this team is a mess, can't run the ball, and the QB gets sacked over 50 times. You can't win games under these conditions.

I am 100% behind drafting Thomas, but there is no guarentee one of your 3 will be available to us. 1st we are assuming we will lose to Houston. Knowing this team I can almost guarentee we will win just to screw up our draft position. Even if we are #3 Thomas and peterson could go 1 and 2 and Branch could stay in college.

Vers - I agree that I have serious doubts about Quinn. Not sure why. He just doesn't seem to be a winner. Seriously, when has he led ND to a win over a top team?

What about Russell. I haven't seen that much of him so I ask, if he comes out could he be considered a "franchise Qb"?

Russell is a Culpepper clone....

I want to watch the LSU game to see how he plays.

Physically yes, Russell is a culpepper clone. But physical ability was never Culpepper's issue before his injury. I always questioned Culpepper's ability to be a leader and to read defenses.

I haven't seen that much of Russell but I am looking forward to watching LSU-ND.

Now THAT'S a draft pick analysis.

I think Quinn has all the measurables. He has a very good arm. He is mobile. He is intelligent. I haven't heard anything negative concerning his character or leadership. He makes all the throws that a NFL qb needs to make. But, the thing I noticed about him is that he makes BIG mistakes when he is pressured. I just think that all the teams at the top of the draft have [censored]-poor offensive lines [imagine that???] and he will fall apart under those circumstances.

I want to get Diam's take on him, because I know he has watched the kid more than I have.


Russell is the kind of guy who makes scouts drool. He has everything and more that a NFL qb needs. My problem w/him is that he had some awful games in the games LSU lost this year. Games in which they had no business losing. That makes me think he is not as serious as he should be. Not to Leon's extent, but nevertheless.........I want guys who think football is the most important thing in the world.

Good observation about how every year the teams at the top of the draft have bad o-lines. You would think if we can notice that then an NFL GM should be able to notice that as well.

I hadn't paid much attention to Russell because frankly at the beginning of the year I didn't think he would be good enough to even consider coming out. Guess I missed on that one.

1) Thomas
2) Johnson
3) US??????? (We best have done our homework) Serious trade downs could be had if Quinn is there at 3...We go down a bit and take whoever's left of Peterson/Branch/Adams...RB/NT/OLB

Let's look at the projected Draft order.

Right now Cleveland is sitting at 3rd with a nice chance to trade down to a team desperately needing Joe Thomas, Brady Quinn, Calvin Johnson, JaMarcus Russel, etc...

The Cards are sitting at 5 hoping and praying they get a shot at Joe Thomas.

If Savage gets the chance he should trade down to 5 and allow the Cards to get Thomas at 3.

The Browns would get the 5th pick plus an additional second round pick(#37), values match-up.

Let's say the draft looks like this:

1. Detroit - Brady Quinn
2. Oakland - Jamarcus Russel/Calvin Johnson/Adrian Peterson
3. Arizona via trade w/ Cleveland - Joe Thomas
4. Tampa - Gaines Adams/Calvin Johnson
5. Cleveland - Adrian Peterson

Now Cleveland has three more first day picks to play with.

2nd rounders - 35th pick Joe Staley OT Central AND 37th Josh Beekman OG Boston College
3rd rounder - 69th pick Tony Ugoh OT/OG Arkansas

Talk about making up for past OL mistakes...

Cleveland can use both 4th, 5th and 6th round picks to help add bodies to the DL rotation.

4th rounder - Dan Bazuin - OLB Central Michigan - 6'4 275 lb 4.70 (40) - can play OLB in the 3-4.
5th rounder - Paul Soliai - NT Utah - Utah runs the 3-4 defense, Solai would be a nice fit in Cleveland.
6th rounder - Conrad Bolston DE Maryland - Would be a nice addition to the DL rotation.
