Redskins: Taylor Victim of Shooting in Florida
Associated Press
Monday, November 26, 2007; 10:23 AM

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was the victim of a shooting at his Florida home, according to a statement released Monday by the team.

The brief statement from the Redskins said Taylor was undergoing treatment at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida and that the Miami-Dade Police Department was investigating.

Taylor, 24, is in his fourth season with the Redskins. He leads the team with five interceptions but has missed the last two games with a knee injury.

WTF??

I wonder if it was accidental. Screwing around, being all cool with the shootin' irons. Moron. Treat every gun as if it's loaded until you check it and unload it yourself.

PFT, who you can't always rely on, is claiming it's "life threatening" and that a femoral artery in his leg was severed.

MIAMI: Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has been shot in his Florida home.

Miami-Dade County police say he is in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

A police spokesman says officers were dispatched to Taylor's home at about 1:45 a.m. and found him shot. He was then airlifted to the hospital. It's not clear where he' was shot.

Taylor is in his fourth season with the Redskins. The 24-year-old leads the team with five interceptions but has missed the last two games with a knee injury.

Taylor has a home in the wealthy Miami suburb of Palmetto Bay that he bought for $900,000 two years ago.

In 2005, he was accused of brandishing a gun at a man and repeatedly hitting him during a fight.

It is being reported that it happened during a home invasion. How does that make him a moron?

My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Redskins' Taylor shot in Florida home

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was injured in a shooting incident at his home in Miami early Monday morning.

The Miami Herald reported that Taylor was shot and wounded by an intruder and the Redskins confirmed the safety was shot.

"The Washington Redskins became aware of a situation this morning in which safety Sean Taylor was the victim of a shooting at his residence in Florida," the Redskins' statement read. "Taylor is currently undergoing treatment at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida."

Miami-Dade patrol officers received a call about 1:45 a.m. (et) Monday that a homeowner had been shot in the leg. Paramedics responded and found Taylor with a gunshot wound to the groin.

Taylor leads the Redskins with five interceptions but has missed the team's previous two games with a knee injury.

It's sad and all. But, on June 3rd, 2005 Taylor was a suspect in a shooting. Taylor was arrested for aggravated assault with a firearm (a felony) and battery (a misdemeanor), for allegedly pointing a gun at a person over a dispute over two ATVs that Taylor claimed were stolen. Taylor then allegedly left the scene, but returned shortly and punched one person..

On January 28, 2006, the Miami-Dade County prosecutor announced that he was filing new charges against Taylor, which would have increased his potential maximum jail time from 16 years to 46 years.

On June 2, 2006, however, the charges against Taylor were dropped as part of a negotiated plea bargain. Taylor will donate his time to various charities and make $1,000 donations to 10 southern Florida schools in scholarships and, in exchange, will avoid jail time and a felony record.

Now, if a person is innocent of a charge, he or she will fight it. They will not have a plea bargain. Taylor is guilty as charged. What goes around, comes around. You play with guns and shoot at cars with them, the same comes back to you.

You've got to be kidding. A sweatheart deal like that and he should fight in court and possibly get 46 years?

He might be a thug. We might find out this was really a case of revenge and shooting him in the groin might be a message.

Right now though he has been shot and is in critical condition.

Seriously, he may very well have been guilty but taking that plea tells nothing of his guilt.

What goes around comes around? I didn't realize he shot someone and tried to kill them.

Well, not that I believe the rumor he's spreading but, if he lost enough blood and his heart stopped beating for a time, it could leave him brain damaged.

Redskins' Sean Taylor shot By MATT SEDENSKY, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 33 minutes ago
PALMETTO BAY, Fla. - Washington Redskins star safety Sean Taylor was shot in the leg at his home Monday and was bleeding heavily, and police said he was in critical condition. They are investigating a possible robbery.

Officers were sent to Taylor's home at about 1:45 a.m. after his girlfriend called 911 and said he was shot in his lower body, Lt. Nancy Perez said. He was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, she said, but did not disclose how many times he was shot.

Richard Sharpstein, an attorney who represented Taylor in a criminal case, said the player's father told him his son had been shot in the leg and there was much bleeding because the femoral artery was severed.

Investigators were still interviewing the girlfriend and other relatives who were in the home to try to determine what happened, Perez said.

"It could have been a possible burglary; it could have been a possible robbery," Perez said. "It has not been confirmed as yet."

Taylor has a home in the Miami suburb of Palmetto Bay that he bought two years ago. The 24-year-old player is in his fourth season with the Redskins after playing at the University of Miami, where he was an All-American in 2003. He leads the team with five interceptions but has missed the last two games because of a knee injury.

In Ashburn, Va., Redskins owner Dan Snyder said he was headed to Miami on his private plane, joined by running back Clinton Portis, vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato and trainer Bubba Tyer.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to Sean and his family. ... We appreciate very, very much the outcry of support," Snyder said.

Redskins safety Pierson Prioleau fought to keep his composure.

"This is not just a member of the Washington Redskins," said Prioleau, one of a few players made available to reporters. "But we're talking about a dad, a brother, a friend of ours, and that's where we're at with this right now."

Coach Joe Gibbs was joined by the team chaplain at the Redskins' usual Monday meeting. A small group of players held a separate prayer gathering.

The Redskins (5-6) lost 19-13 at Tampa on Sunday. Taylor did not travel with the team to the game because of his injury. Taylor sprained a ligament in his right knee in the second half of the Nov. 11 loss to Philadelphia. He was expected to miss at least two games.

Known as one of the NFL's hardest hitters, Taylor played in his first Pro Bowl last season, where he drew attention by leveling the other team's punter in what is usually a well-mannered exhibition game. Even though he has missed two games, his five interceptions remained tied for most in the NFC.

Taylor has been in trouble numerous times since he was drafted as the No. 5 overall pick in 2004. He has been fined at least seven times during his professional career for late hits and other infractions, including a $17,000 penalty for spitting in the face of Tampa Bay running back Michael Pittman during a playoff game in January 2006. He also was fined $25,000 for skipping a mandatory rookie symposium shortly after he was drafted.

Redskins coaches and players have defended Taylor, saying he was smart and misunderstood. Taylor has been slow to let anyone in his inner circle. He has rarely spoken to reporters, saying he does not trust them. Teammates said he became more mature over the last year after he became a father for the first time.

In 2005, Taylor was accused of brandishing a gun at a man and repeatedly hitting him during a fight that broke out after Taylor and some friends went looking for the people who had allegedly stolen his all-terrain vehicles.

Taylor reached a deal with prosecutors last year after they agreed to drop felony charges against him. He pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors in the assault case and was sentenced to 18 months probation. The pleas prompted another fine from the NFL but kept his football career intact.

He also was ordered to talk about the importance of education at 10 Miami schools and had to contribute $1,000 for scholarships to each of those schools.

The man Taylor allegedly hit, Ryan Hill, sued, seeking at least $15,000 in damages. Hill sustained bruises to his body, incurred medical expenses and lost wages because of the fight, the lawsuit said.

From NFL Draft Countdown...

From his attorney:
"Richard Sparpstein, who has represented Sean Taylor in legal matters in the past and is a friend of the family, said moments ago that the player's life is hanging in the balance in the hospital. Sharpstein, speaking from the hospital, said Taylor is "nonresponsive and unconscious" and the doctors are "worried about a possible brain injury or death."

Sharpstein, who has been with Taylor's family at the hospital much of the day, said that there are major worries that Taylor may have lost oxygen to the brain, and that no other procedures are planned for right now. "They're waiting to see if he comes to," Sharpstein said. He was shot in the groin/thigh area near the femoral artery and lost copious amounts of blood. He was airlifted to the trauma center and endured several hours of surgery, Sharpstein said.

Taylor is in intensive care, Sharpstein said, and his girlfriend and child were not injured in the attack. Sharpstein said Taylor was sleeping when he heard a noise in the living room. The intruders were at his bedroom and Taylor reached for a machete or other form of knife he keeps nearby in case of emergency, and two shots were fired, with one striking his leg.

"Right now he's clinging to life and we're all praying he makes it," Sharpstein said."

That's terrible, just terrible. I hope it's all rumor, and I hope he makes a full 100% recovery. Forget about his football days right now, it's most important that he makes it through and is able to go on with life.

Prayers and thoughts...

Right, I figured that part of it was possible, but I'm not sure how paralysis works in unless it shuts down that part of his brain. I doubt he's rumor spreading either, I just want to see a source on it.

Either way, my prayers are with Sean. He may have made mistakes in the past but no one deserves this...

Although watching something on ESPN is not a valid link, I believe the statement made by his lawyer. It was a quote from him to a news source. The situation sounds pretty grave to me. He had to lose a lot of blood. He is probably lucky just to be alive.

yah If only the world worked that way...sometimes it's best to take what u can get even tho u know u are innocent...i'm not saying he was innocent or not..i don't kno and dont' care...but this is blatantly false on your part to say "if u are innocent u fight no matter what" that my friend is STUPID

I understand this isn't the same...but it's still similar..
For example, when i ran a red light(according to the cop, because i did not think i did it was yellow ) the prosicutor pretty much told me that no 1 gets away with this ticket...and i will get points AND have to pay the court fees etc if i try to reason with the judge...or i can take his plea bargain deal in which i say i'm sorry i did run the light...so they took off the 2 points i got but i had to pay the money...does that mean i was guilty of running the red light? HELL no

yeah, that struck me as odd as well.

I almost wonder if it isn't an angry girlfriend thing... kinda like William Green "accidentally fall UP some stairs and landing on a knife in his shoulder". To me, it sounds an awful lot like someone was trying to shoot him in the family jewels.

Either way, prayers out to him... hope he pulls through. Regardless of the reason, it is completely undeserved... noone deserves to be shot like that.

No matter what, it's still horribly tragic.

I'm willing to bet that this "robbery" or "burglary" isn't going to turn out to be that simple. This was probably done due to his "Thuglary" (yes i just made that word up). It was probably the result of some kind of illegal activities that Sean is or was involved with. I may be wrong.... but I doubt it.

Well obviously a home invasion or robbery is another story. I was just making a knee-jerk comment based on past history. We'll see how it all shakes out.

If his femoral artery really was severed, he is indeed VERY lucky to be alive.

Sean Taylor hospitalized for gunshot wound

Published: Nov. 26, 2007 at 4:46 PM
MIAMI, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was in critical condition after being shot by an intruder Monday in his Miami home, a family friend said.

Richard Sharpstein, Taylor's lawyer and family friend, said at least one armed intruder broke into Taylor's house. He was shot in the groin and critically wounded when he went to investigate a noise outside the bedroom door where Taylor, his girlfriend and their child were sleeping, the Miami Herald reported.

Sharpstein said the 24-year-old Taylor, who lost a lot of blood from the injury, was in a Miami hospital's intensive care unit after spending about two hours in surgery.

Police records indicate Monday's break-in at Taylor's house was the second in the last eight days, the Herald reported. Earlier, a burglar broke into Taylor's house, rifled through his things and left a knife on a bed.

Taylor, the fifth player taken overall in the 2004 draft, is in his fourth season with the Redskins. A safety with a standout career at the University of Miami, he leads the team with five interceptions but missed the last two games with a knee injury.

Redskins management and players traveled to Miami to support Taylor's family.

That's what I was thinking too. I'll bet that there's more to this story than it being simply a robbery gone bad. But, that's for the police to determine and investigate now.

I do hope that Sean comes through this ok. Despite his past life choices, I don't think anyone really deserves to be shot in the groin. (well, there may be a few exceptions to that, but that's reserved for rapists and pedophiles)
