i think retaining him is the right thing to do, i don't see it as being a problem, but i would probably say he's 95% gone in 2 years, which is fine, because it's cap space, and you can get energy guys, those aren't tough to find...
i'm proud of the cavs for standing their ground, and not letting varejao and his agent bamboozle them for some ridiculous contract...

Cavaliers match Bobcats' $17 million offer for Varejao CLEVELAND (AP) -- Anderson Varejao will play for the Cleveland Cavaliers this season, after all. The Cavaliers matched the Charlotte Bobcats' $17 million, three-year offer sheet for the restricted free agent Wednesday, ending a contract dispute that gives Cleveland some much needed help. The Cavaliers had a week to match the offer sheet or lose the 6-foot-10 Varejao to the Bobcats. The Cavs' decision came the day after their fourth straight loss. They are 0-3 without LeBron James, who sprained his left index finger a week ago. Coach Mike Brown criticized his team's lack of effort in a 100-79 loss to New Jersey, something Varejao should be able to help improve. "We're looking forward to getting him in Cleveland and getting him back on the basketball court," Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry said. "He's a player we respect and admire and he'll help us become a better basketball team." Varejao isn't much of a scorer, but the 25-year-old mop-haired Brazilian known for his energetic defense should help the Cavaliers regain their intensity on the court. A fan favorite, Varejao averaged a career-best 6.8 points and 6.7 rebounds last season in helping the Cavaliers reach the NBA finals for the first time. Varejao could opt out of the deal after the second season and become an unrestricted free agent. He said last week that he would prefer to play for another team. Before training camp opened, Varejao turned down Cleveland's one-year, $1.2 million qualifying offer. If he had signed, the former second-round pick could have become an unrestricted free agent after this season. In late October, the Cavaliers rejected a six-year, $52 million package presented by Varejao's agent, Dan Fegan. Asked Tuesday night if he expected to see Varejao back with the Cavaliers, Brown said, "I hope so. He's a talented player. He's a great guy." It was unclear Wednesday when Varejao would join the team or how quickly he could jump into Brown's rotation after missing more than a month. "I know he's a hard worker. I don't know what type of shape he's in," Brown said. The Cavaliers waived guard/forward Demetris Nichols to make room for Varejao on the roster. Before joining the Cavaliers in the 2004-05 season, Varejao spent three seasons in Spain playing for F.C. Barcelona. He's also a member of the Brazilian national team.

http://dispatch.com/live/content/sports/...00.html?sid=101Now that the Cleveland Cavaliers have matched the Charlotte Bobcats' offer sheet for Anderson Varejao, the forward might have some explaining to do to his teammates. As negotiations with the Cavs bogged down, Varejao tried to send a message to management by saying he no longer wanted to play for the team but also told ESPN.com, "I don't think I'll be happy in Cleveland knowing that I was (almost) the lowest-paid player there for three years and am still paid much less than players on the team that I outperform." That supposedly raised the eyebrows of some of the players, but they may still be happy to have the help after a less-than-stellar 9-10 start.

I don't know how the NBA's "salary cap" pretends to work, but I think we just need to cut a whole bunch of players, take the hit and a losing season and sign some real talent next year with our freed up cap space.

you can't cut players. this isn't the nfl...
you can buy players out, but i seriously doubt that larry hughes will be bought out...
the only way you can get rid of a bad contract, is to wait until it has 2 years or less remaining on it, because then it becomes tradable, most teams would take a bad player, as long as his contract is up, to create space in the future, the cavs could easily trade larry hughes as soon as next year... or they could wait it out, and have the 12 million to add another player next to lebron...

That really bites about the contracts....ricidulously sized and you can't even get out of them. Perhaps if Hughes actually had to worry that he might not get paid he might not be "hurt" so often. Buying them out would set a bad precedent... players would see Cleveland as a place to get fast cash and move on.
I'm glad they didn't overpay for Sideshow Bob though... he's had an impact, but he has never struck me as anything overly special. He's a role player and those guys shouldn't get mega-bucks.
I don't even watch them (I'm not much of a basketball fan), but I'd say that we need more than one player next to Bron.... at least two more.

a point guard would fit... but they also need all of their current guys back...
they need another ball handler, someone who can take the pressure off of lebron, so he doesn't need to play the point-forward the entire game, i love when he does play the point, and will run isolation plays, but you can't do that the whole game, the less of it you do, the more effective it becomes, and getting a point guard who's not afraid of taking control, and dictating the tempo would do wonders for this team, it would also make guys like gibson and pavs better players, and i'm sure gooden and z would benefit as well...
this team was playing phenomenal basketball, all things considered, before lebron got hurt...
but i'm just wondering how bad lebron is hurt, he's almost never out this long...
and yeah, varejao is nothing special, a very good player for his position, an excellent sixth man right now with the potential to one day be a starter...
but he cannot start until he learns not to foul so much, develops a better offensive game, and is able to hit free throws better...
i've said it a bunch of times on this board, he's fabricio oberto (spurs) with a little more potential, an energy guy who always seems to be in the right spot, and isn't afraid to sacrifice his body, and as much as he's a good fit with san antonio, the spurs gave him a very modest deal, even less than what the cavs are giving varejao....

I would take Varejao's over Hughes any day. Hughes is not the D-man that Varejao's is , and he is hot and cold on the O and D...jmo.

No it doesn't ... there's no such thing as cutting players and taking a cap hit in the NBA.

He also has the worst shot selection of anyone in the NBA. He's the master of the 22 1/2 foot brick shot. You know, the take-a-step inside in the three point line and THEN shoot it. At least he could have the decentcy to take a full on three pointer and on the 10% chance that it actually goes in, it would be worth 3 points instead of two.

Varejao is a great defender, but yes, he takes some dumb, dumb shots. Dumb because he can't hit a damn thing, and still decides to take it instead of dumping it off. I guess that's his way of surprising the D. It's just what they're not expecting.

to hughes' defense, they have been playing him at the point, which really isn't hits natural position, and his style fits a more uptempo offense, with the way the cavs were running things just before lebron got hurt, he might actually show some worth...
with that said, he still is a large dissapointment...

Good observation, its very true.
I still cant understand why he keeps shooting those 20 footers thinking he can make them.

Well because he used to be able to make em'. I think his finger really ruined his shot personally. I don't think he will ever have full bend or range of motion in it again.
Well he's playing tonight so let's see what he can do. Probably a whole lot of nothing but i'm still interested to see.

When did he used to be able to make them?
He has always had a low FG% his entire career. When we signed him we knew he wasnt an outside shooter. As LeBron_James above said, his offense is geared towards slashing to the hole, not shooting outside.
he has never made them before.

Don't get me wrong he wasn't automatic but he was a hell of alot better than he has been the last two years. It's so bad now I would put money on whether he airballs it or hits the camera.

Maybe my definition of "hell of a lot better" is different than yours, but he was not. Did you actually follow Larry Hughes previous to Cleveland or are you just assuming things?

I didn't follow him alot but I did see quite a few games when he played for the Wiz. Like I said he was a hell of alot better than he is now..... In my opinion
I'm not assuming anything. No need to try and call me out.

I guess so.
Your acting like I was saying he was knocking down ouside shots like crazy. I wasn't, your the one assuming things.
The difference is at one time when I seen him rise up to take an outside shot I at-least thought he would have a descent shot at making it, now I just hope someone on our team can get the rebound. Even his mid-range shot is crap, I honestly think his finger is/has been a problem. That's all.
Pointless argument.

just the big differences in the type of offenses that cleveland and washington ran, the cavs are the basketball version of the pittsburgh steelers a few years ago, you know they are going to play solid d, and you know they are going to run the ball, and it's most likely going to be a close game... that's the way the cavs have played since mike brown has taken over
if you stuck larry hughes on phoenix, i'd make the argument that his numbers could be comparable to shawn marion's...
he's not a good fit, and i think that he should work his way into the starting role from the bench, he has to prove he's a better fit to start than pavs or boobie, or whoever...
with that said, we need lebron back, because it's pretty obvious he's this entire team, and that's not a knock on the rest of the team like everyone else wants to do, i'm just saying that 90% of our offense goes through him... as well as the great defense he was playing...
