Mississippi pump failure leaves 150,000 people without safe drinking water
Ashley R. Williams
USA TODAY

The water supply in Mississippi's capital city remained unsafe for its 150,000 residents to drink or brush their teeth Tuesday after water treatment pumps failed a day earlier, exacerbating a persistent water crisis in the city.

Excessive rainfall had doused Jackson and central Mississippi throughout August, and flooding of the Pearl River caused pumps to fail at a Jackson plant, officials said.

Gov. Tate Reeves, who lives in Jackson, announced a state of emergency and warned residents late Monday to not drink the water.

He said the city also “cannot produce enough water to fight fires, to reliably flush toilets and to meet other critical needs.”

Low water pressure left some people unable to take showers or flush toilets and officials said the low pressure caused concern for firefighting. Those who did have water flowing from the tap were told to boil it to kill bacteria that could make them sick.

Jackson schools held classes online Tuesday, while some restaurants closed. Jackson State University brought in temporary restrooms for students, and Jackson State football coach Deion Sanders said the water crisis left his players without air conditioning or ice at their practice facility.

FLOODWATERS IN MISSISSIPPI:Pearl River crests just below major flood stage

Heavy rains have left streets and neighborhoods flooded in northeast Jackson, Miss.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency planned to distribute drinking and nondrinking water for up to 180,000 residents in the city and surrounding areas, Reeves said. The city had been under a boil-water notice since late July, when tests found a cloudy quality to the water that could lead to health problems.

Meanwhile, the bloated Pearl River’s water levels continued to drop Tuesday – to 33.59 feet, according to the National Weather Service – after cresting Monday at 35.4 feet, just below the major flood stage of 36 feet.

Jackson mayor: Water system has faced 'decades' of issues
Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said Jackson’s water system is troubled by short staffing and “decades of deferred maintenance.” He said the influx of water from torrential rain changed the chemical composition needed for treatment, which slowed the process of pushing water out to customers.

Lumumba is Democrat and was not invited to the Republican governor’s Monday night news conference. Although the two politicians are often at odds, Lumumba said Tuesday that he’s having productive discussions with the Health Department and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and he’s grateful for the state’s help.

Like many cities, Jackson faces water system problems it can’t afford to fix. Its tax base has eroded the past few decades as the population decreased — the result of mostly white flight to suburbs that began after public schools integrated in 1970. The city’s population is now more than 80% Black, with about 25% of its residents living in poverty.

Mississippi governor activates National Guard
Reeves activated the Mississippi National Guard on Tuesday in response to the emergency, he announced on Twitter. President Joe Biden had been briefed on the crisis unfolding in Mississippi, said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who tweeted that the federal government was prepared to help.

“FEMA is working closely with the state officials to identify needs, and the EPA is coordinating with industry partners to expedite delivery of critical treatment equipment for emergency repairs at the City of Jackson water treatment facilities,” Jean-Pierre wrote.

Low to no water pressure could last 'next couple of days'
Jackson has two water treatment plants. The larger one, O.B. Curtis, sits near a reservoir that provides most of the city's water supply. The reservoir also has a role in flood control.

Lumumba also declared a water system emergency Monday. The shortage has left many Jackson residents with low to no water pressure and was expected to last at least “the next couple of days,” according to city officials.

“What I liken it to is if you were drinking out of a Styrofoam cup, someone puts a hole in the bottom of it, you’re steady trying to fill it while it’s steady running out at the bottom,” Lumumba told The Associated Press.

Jackson has long dealt with water system failures, including a cold snap in 2021 that left people with frozen pipes and no running water. Similar problems happened earlier this year on a smaller scale.

Major flood control project could spare Pearl River in the future
The One Lake Project, a flood control and economic development project plan first mentioned in 2007, was revisited Monday as Jackson and state officials discussed the receding Pearl River and its future.

The project would add a 1,500-acre lake onto the river, thus moving water downstream and lowering the flood risk, reported the Mississippi Clarion Ledger, part of the USA TODAY Network.

The Pearl River in Jackson rose to its third-highest crest in history on Feb. 17, 2020, when water levels reached 36.67 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

Lumumba said Monday that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reviewing the One Lake Project plan’s final draft, the Clarion Ledger reported.

Thoughts and prayers? Many seem to think it works for gun violence. So it should work well on floodwaters.
Maybe toss some paper towels their way? If it’s good enough for Puerto Rico it should be fine for Mississippi.

They’ve known about this issue for years? geez.

Once again another red state that receives billions of $$$$ of federal funding and assistance. Probably billions more than they put into the fed, putting that burden on the blue states who put more into the fed then they receive back. The fed should stay out of this totally and Mississippi should ask for humanitarian aid from foreign countries.

How did you all make this a political issue, heavy rainfall lead to pump failures and overflow of the city water reservoir.

Even the writer didn't make it political.

Guess the people in California should all burn in wildfires too?
People in Flint, MI should all succumb to lead poisoning?
Northern states should be allowed to freeze to death during blizzards?
Tornados and hurricanes are the fault of the states political leaders.

To hell with the people regardless of what party they belong too, they should all suffer for the sins o the others.

Politicians just laugh as we make everything political and keep them in power, meanwhile they all meet at the private club, sit together regardless of party and discus the next divisive thing they can push on the people.

We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

More than 50% of the people in Mississippi vote red. Much more. Jackson however is heavily Democrat. It's also a very poor city. So the tax revenue from property and business taxes make it so they don't have a lot of money to maintain and improve their city. Oddly enough it seems a very red state hasn't helped fix the water supply of a very blue city either. But I do agree with you. This isn't about red/blue state. It's about Americans needing clean drinking water. We should all hope that a quick resolution is found to provide that for these Americans no matter how it gets solved or funded.

I think, though some have chosen a very less tactful way of approaching it, is that we see states like Texas, Florida. Louisiana and others who gladly want, call for and expect federal funding any time a disaster strikes. They want the federal government to come to their rescue. And I can't say I blame them. Many states aren't equipped to deal with such things and need help. Then any time the federal government makes laws for the entire nation they scream about state's rights, how the federal government is getting involved in things it shouldn't and act like the feds are Satan.

So which way do they want it? Do they want no help or guidance from the federal government? Or do they want to pick and choose when it suits their purpose and villainize them the rest of the time? It seems they want the latter. To have their cake and eat it too.

Rand Paul did exactly that when it came to the tornados in Kentucky. IIRC, he has voted against federal aid to other states.

All that aside, sticking with the theme that you and others have brought into the thread, I hope this situation resolves with minimal fallout. I feel terrible for the people in this situation. Mocking or carrying ill will in this situation would only acknowledge that we have all reached the lowest common denominator.

Tend to agree with all of that.

I just don't understand everybody's endless obsession with outrage, particularly in cases like this. One poster is so outraged with "red" that he's in favor of letting poor black people drown thirsty while they fly in water from Iran. Goofy.

Some facts...

Quote
(Jan, 2022) The EPA also issued a notice to the city of Jackson, Mississippi, saying its aging and overwhelmed drinking water system violates the federal Safe Drinking Water Act. The order directs the city to outline a plan to "correct the significant deficiencies identified" in an EPA report within 45 days.

They told them to use some of that 79 million in fed grants (Journey to Justice initiative / Bipartisan Infrastructure Law) and get their crap together. Maybe they were in the process? Maybe the rains just came one year too early?

Sad that things have to get so bad that tragedy is the only is the only driving force to get asses out of seats. Particularly in places where poverty is rampant and tax bases are gone. We need to do waaay better.

It seems the human race in general has never learned the lesson that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Some of us have but many haven't. Sadly many of those who haven't are running our towns, cities, states and our nation.

I hope that it was the result of something unfortunate and not just inaction from those who are otherwise disinterested. If it is the latter, I hope they're prosecuted.

Really just seems like it was probably a large project that would take some time to plan and execute. Funding just went through in December. Everything right down to stocking milk at Kroger seems to be moving at a snail's pace. Timing is tragic, but at least we had plan. Journey to Justice is a step in the right direction to get past some of the partisan b.s. and make sure underserved Americans have basic human rights.

But yeah, what Pit said, prevention always seems to be a curiously hard sell. Even when the possible impact is can be devastating.

That makes sense. I’m glad that at least there was a plan and it wasn’t due to finagling. Still sucks overall, though.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves says it's 'a great day to not be in Jackson,' where residents went without clean running water for weeks

https://www.yahoo.com/news/mississippi-gov-tate-reeves-says-212312766.html

here's the quote:

"It is a great day to be in Hattiesburg. It's also, as always, a great day to not be in Jackson," he said, according to local television station 16 WAPT News. "I feel like I should take off my emergency manager director hat and leave it in the car and take off my public works director hat and leave it in the car."

_______

funny that conservatives won't storm the government in Mississippi because of the failures of the state government. but i forgot, it's the south. if you're screwing over areas with a high % of black americans, you get rewarded for it. i would love to come here and say the residents of that state won't forgive this, but that would be a lie. because we all know that the republican voters are gonna support and defend this dude, because they LIKE that he doesn't give a crap about people in jackson.

when people get mad that i call these white conservative males racist and bigots, why get mad? YOU GIVE ME PLENTY OF EVIDENCE THAT SAYS ITS TRUE.

if you are a white conservative male, and vote for racist bigoted republicans, don't get mad when i call you racist.

because if you aren't racist, why do you vote for one? if you're not sexist, why do you vote for one? if you're not a bigot, why do you vote for one? if you're not a christian nationalist, why do you vote for one?

yall can say whatever the hell you want on message boards, social media outlets, TV, wherever. at the end of the day, when you cast that ballot on election day, what did you vote for, what did you endorse?

racism, bigotry, discrimination, and xenophobia. THAT'S what you voted for. stop getting mad at me for labeling you EXACTLY what you show me to be.

because there's a very EASY way to not be called racist, not be called a bigot and sexist. you know how? DON'T FREAKING VOTE FOR IT.

The only good thing about water in Mississippi is the crunchiness. Nobody drinks the city water in Mississippi if they have an IQ higher than 80 ...

And if they do drink the water it helps keep their IQ lower than 80.
