Hope there's a simple answer to this.
Advertised HD DVD (not blue ray) movies claim they can be played in the XBOX360,....well,.. I gave it a shot and got nothing. I play regular DVD's all the time on it but for some reason my XBOX will not recognize the HD format.
I've gone through all the XBOX settings to see if there was something that I had to "enable" but as far as I can tell there is no specific setting for this.
....Any ideas????

It can play HD DVD's if you have the HD player add on: Best Buy Link The system cannot play the HD DVD's on it's own.

Yes I'm starting a debate. Your better off with the PS3, it already has a blue ray dvd player, which will emerge as the mainstream technology over hd dvd.

best buy (i'm not sure if it's exclusively them, or not) is doing a deal where if you buy the add on ($180) you get 5 free hd-dvds...
i'm thinking about splitting it with my girlfriend

if that's how you want to play it, i would suggest buying your hd dvd player or xbox 360 add-on, and going with a netflix or blockbuster plan, where you can just rent movies, because i believe both are starting to add more and more hd/blu-ray titles
i seriously can't wait to watch transformers in hd...

It all depends on which technology the porn industry picks. In the 80s, the porn industry picked the VHS over the Beta tapes, even though Beta had better quality and was in stereo 5 years before VHS. News industries still use Beta as their format. As the porn industry is still the leading film industry in terms of money, they will decide the blue ray/hd dvd war.

It's still 500$ for an 80G PS3. It's 400$ for a 120G XBox Elite and 180.00 for the DVD add on. An $80.00 difference isn't much considering games like Gears of War and Halo 3 aren't available on Playstation consoles. You're also getting a hard drive that's 40GB's larger. which helps close the gap on the price difference.
As for Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD), it will be a while before either becomes obsolete. By then, Microsoft will have launched it's next console.

blu-ray has already decided that they won't be making adult dvds..
which, like it or not, is a multi-billion dollar business that you can't really afford to not have... i think hd-dvd will last longer...
although i'm still debating on whether or not i want the add on, yes, you get the 5 free dvds, but then what? do you really wanna pay 35 bucks for one movie? hopefully the price drops on those...

Amazon has been running a lot of specials on Blu-Ray movies over the past few weeks. I'm not sure if they have the same deals on HD-DVD's though. I just got two Blu-Rays for $24.00...

Oh god what a joke, in the late 70's early 80's there was 2 options to watch porn, VHS or go to the adult movie. That's why vhs won. Now you still have DVD's which all Blu-ray players play and the internet which accounts for 90% of the porn industry now.
Porn won't even have an impact on this war, Period. And BTW porn is already on Blu-ray in Japan.

That's only because the 360 came out before any of the next-gen dvd formats hit the market. By viture of the nature of time itself, it was impossible for it to have support for either format when it was released, thus it HAD to be an add-on.
The biggest advantage the 360 has in this format war is that there is already a massive installed base of 360 owners that have already spent their big chunk and only need to upgrade.
Sony/BluRay has been doing LOTS of massive ad campaigns... I would think that if the HD-DVD consortium and M$ got together and did the same, they could probably build a significant lead in the war.

I think that it's a disadvantage. Heck you can get a stand alone HD-DVD player for $20 more. HD-DVD just passed the 750,000 players sold including the Xbox add on. Bluray has over 6.5 million units including the PS3 and every PS3 sold = Bluray sold. The attach rate for PS3 owners is rising due to the advertising.

Not to mention you probably don't want to see 90% of Porn stars in HD...there is a reason they tend to use filters on their cameras and airbrush.

i don't think he meant it sucks that you can't watch adult movies on blu ray, i think he meant that it is going to be very hard for blu-ray to survive if they don't allow a multi-billion dollar industry to produce dvds with them...
and the reason the 360 doesn't have hd-dvd capability right away is so that the console is cheaper, because maybe people don't care for that option, they give you the choice to buy it seperately...

Exactly.
I'd much rather pay 350.00-400.00 initially and decide if I want the HD player down the road. Another 180.00 would have really turned me off to the 360. It's the main reason I didn't even consider buying a PS3.
I have had a 360 for almost 2 years and I have yet to buy the add on player. Actually, I haven't even thought about it. Unless you have a TV that is 42" or larger, it probably wouldn't really be worth it.

I have the add on player and if you have an HD set then it makes a big difference (mine is 32" widescreen). When it comes down to it if you are wanting an HD player the PS3 is probably the better choice, but honestly if you are buying a game system get the one that has the games you want (or both of em <G>).

There is an answer here somewhere in this discussion. The only possible thing left to do is to get a Ps3.

With the Xbox price drop, you can get the standard 360 model and HD player for 450.00. So again, they're close.
Part of the reason Sony has come out with cheaper models is because the PS3 is selling so poorly. Sony only has around 16-17% of the market share right now for next-gen consoles. The 360 and Wii are just about splitting the rest. Sony is trying to boost sagging sales, thus they're selling the 400.00 version at what I have heard is a small loss.
It still hasn't really interested me at all. Sony has been pushing a mediocre game platform (and lineup) for a while and it's finally starting to catch up with them. Forza, Gears of War, Bioshock, Half Life and Halo 3 are all better then any single game that's exclusive to the PS3. Microsoft also has Mass Effect on the horizon. Microsoft continues to focus on the most important part of any system.......THE GAMES.

The Orange Box is due out on PS3 this month as well which includes Half Life.
As far as the exclusives go, there are a number of exlusives coming out for PS3 in the next few months that will rival anything on th 360. Remember, those games you listed haven't been out long and weren't launch titles. How many great games did the 360 have when it was released?
I remember going over my friend's to play Perfect Dark Zero, which was a launch title that was supposedly going to be a great game. It was complete garbage. How a next-gen game could look so poor is beyond me. I've played PS2 games that looked better.
It took some time for these360 games to come out and really grab your attention. Sony is just starting to get to tha point. MGS4, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, HOME, SOCOM....all exclusives coming out in the short future. The thing about the 360 is it sounds like they're pretty much tapping out it's potential, whereas the PS3 is only just beginning. Blu-Ray discs can hold so much more info. One rumor I heard for the reasoning to delay Grand Theft Auto was that they couldn't fit all the info for the game on the disc for the 360, and had to come up with something to compress it (according to a friend who read it online). This isn't a problem with the PS3.
What happens when the PS3 starts putting out bigger and better games? Is Microsoft going to be able to do the same? Developers have said that some of the things they are doing now with their games they wouldn't be possible on the 360.
If you haven't seen the trailer yet for Killzone 2, take a peek at it. The game looks absolutely amazing. And I'm sure the games will only get better over time. Sales have picked up, and once the big games start hitting the shelves, I think it will boost PS3 sales.

Forza Motorsports (Released 1 year 6 months after launch) But Sony Has GT 5 comming out soon which is the king of racing games. And it's exclusive.
Gears: (Released 1 year after launch) Good game, but will soon be on the PC.
Bioshock: (Released 1 year 9 months after launch) Excellent game, should win Game of the Year, IMO.
Half-Life - will be out soon on the PS3 but who wants to play this on the console? PC is the only way to go if you are playing Half-Life.
Halo 3 (Released 1 year 10 months from launch) I've never really cared for this game. You can call me a fan boy about this all people want but I have some of the biggest Halo fans at work and they are dissapointed in H3 and they moved on the COD.
And Mass Effect is already out. (2 years after launch) And it really is a decent American RPG but it's graphics aren't that great. The lip sinc on the voice isn't even close. This was hailed as an A++ game and it's really a B+ game. Getting and average score of 8.6.
So let's recap, all of the games were released over a year and in most cases 1yr 6months - 2 years after the launch of the 360. The PS3 just hit it's first year birthday and they have some pretty good games out:
Ressistance Fall of Man Warhawk Uncharted, Drakes Fortune Ratchet and Clank Tools of destruction
Now the 360 blew it's wad this year. What's the next big exclusive? Gears 2 do out NEXT christmas. In that span of time the PS3 will have the following:
GT 5 Home Metal Gear Solid 4 Fnal Fantasy 13 Killzone 2 Unreal Tournement 3 Haze Little Big Planet Socom Confrontations (SlantSix) Socom 4 (Zipper) LA Noir (Same team that makes GTA4)
And now with the cheaper price point the PS3 can make up ground fast. It's taking some time for the PS3 to get it's killer apps just like it took the 360. It's going to be a big year for Sony and you can put this thread in the archives and we can bring it up a year from now and you will be saying "Damn, he was righ!".

I understand what you guys are saying but the problem is that by then (a year and a half after PS3's launch). Microsoft may be releasing info about a new console. It's surely being thought about at this point. It may not be ready but I would guess an announcement will be pending.
Microsoft has a huge advantage because they launched first. PS3 has been behind the 8 ball ever since. While PS3 may have some hardware advantages for game develoment.....by the time they really start to be realized, Microsoft could be announcing or releasing the next bigger and better console.
Sony is really in a bind IMO. It's just compounded by the popularity of the Wii. Add in that Microsoft's online play is second to none and it doesn't make any sense for me to latch on to anything that Sony is doing.

fable 2 might be all you need.
there's also a ninja gaiden sequel coming out
2008 won't be a huge year for exclusives on the 360, but there will be plenty of games coming out, gta iv, mercenaries 2, saints row 2, etc...
2009 will probably be huge
but seriously, fable 2? oh man..

There's been a lot of speculation about Gears of War 2. They're reportedly making a Gears of War movie, so I would guess the game launch would coincide or follow right there after. That game has Halo 3 potential IMO. Could be HUGE.

Microsoft would be dumb to launch another system in the near future. The PS2 has lasted 7 years now and was out 6 years before they released their next-gen console. The only reason Microsoft would put out another system would be knowing that the power of the 360 can't compete. They've spent tons of money on the system, so they should get their money's worth before doing so. I can't see them moving forward this soon. They can start planning, but to release a system after 3 years or so just makes little sense, unless they're looking into something portable a la the DS or PSP.

And what's the deal with SlantSix? I thought Zipper did the SOCOM franchise? I saw the new one was developed by SlantSix, but couldn't figure out how that works.

Sony owns both studio's and SlantSix has been making the PSP Socoms. I can only speculate as to why Zipper isn't making Confrontations. A lot of people think it's because Socom 3 and CA were kind of dissapointments to the Socom fans. But Zipper is still making a Socom right now it's titled Socom 4 (Which don't make sense because CA should be Socom 4 but it's just the working title anyways)
Here is the Link.

-JC- A Blu-and-Black Friday Blu-ray reveals Black Friday numbers! by Christopher Monfette December 4, 2007 - The Blu-ray camp has officially responded to its Black Friday performance, quoting an impressive set of numbers, if the figures are to be believed. According to Neilsen/VideoScan, Blu-ray software sales for the week of Black Friday were 72.6% - compared to just 27.4% for HD DVD. Describing the notably successful HD DVD promotions evident throughout the high-profile shopping day as a "fire sale," Blu-ray continues to claim victory in the sheer number of high-definition titles moved. Stating that as of November 24, there were 2.7 million Blu-ray capable machines in houses in North America (this figure includes Playstation 3 consoles), the announcement contrasts these numbers against the 750,000 players and game drives recently announced by the HD DVD camp last. The announcement concludes with a number of "facts to consider." Keep in mind when reading the following the exact source of the information, but any way you slice it, Blu-ray is continuing to perform well and shows no signs of diminished performance in the format wars. Total sales of Blu-ray movies in the US topped the 4 million mark in November. It took 10 months for Blu-ray Disc sales to top 1 million, just over three months to reach the two million, less than 3 months to reach three million and just over 2 months to reach the four million. Despite a significant head start in the market, HD DVD didn't pass the 2.5 million mark until the middle of November. Year-to-date (through Nov. 25), Blu-ray movie titles have outsold HD DVD in the US by a 2-to-1 margin. Of the top 20 high-definition titles in the US this year, 18 are available on Blu-ray.Blu-ray movie have 73% of the market in Europe – outselling HD DVD by a 3-to-1 margin according to sales data provided by Media Control Gfk International. Blu-ray's share of the HD recorder market in Japan is now 95% as of the week ending November 12, 2007, according to Media Control Gfk International. Link ________________________________________________________ Now, Blu-ray's #'s still pale in comparison to DVD but the attach rates on Blu-ray are increasing exponentially and Blu-ray is spreading the lead out so far that I think it's going to be hard for HD-DVD to win.

I was in the store this morning and almost purchased a player that played both HD and Blu Ray. I just couldn't get past the $999 price tag.
I think it continues to be one of those things that I will be happy to use an up convert DVD player until one of them takes a significant lead and it's more clear which one to buy.

I read some where that LG (I think) is making a dual format one and it will be around $500. Since Blu-ray came with my PS3 I'll continue to back that format and if a movie I want is on HD-DVD only I'll get it on DVD because the PS3 is also one hell of a converter as well.

The model I was looking at was an LG. The price tag on it was $999. I'm sure it will go down in price. It wasn't that long ago that all of the HD and Blu Ray players were that expensive.
At this point I'll wait.

Here's one for $700: http://www.electronicexpress.com/product?prod_id=11026&refer=6&cpc=6Still far too rich for my blood. Granted I still have not watched a movie in full blown BluRay or HD-DVD 1080p, but I can't think of any reason to spend that kind of money when I can UpConvert to 1080i right now without dropping another dime. Spend $99 on an upconvert and be done with it.... or do like me and get this... it upconverts to 1080i AND it holds 400 CD/DVDs
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

I understand, and if it wasn't for the PS3 I wouldn't own a Blu-ray player but a DVD up-converter just stretches the picture and shows it in 1080i but that's still not a true HD picture and it's definitely not HD sound.
