Something positive to get us through the week. Plenty of records still to be broken Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer 12.04.2007 As the Browns head into the final quarter of the season, several offensive players have already set personal bests. But some also are threatening team records that could go down during the final four games of the year. Braylon Edwards was a bright spot during a tough loss to the Cardinals Sunday. With 7 catches for a season-high 149 yards, Edwards went over 1,000 yards on the season. It's only the seventh 1,000-yard receiving season in Browns history. With 1,043 yards on 62 catches, Edwards' '07 campaign currently ranks as the fourth-best in Browns history in terms of yardage. He's 25 yards away from passing Paul Warfield's 1968 season and 55 yards away from moving ahead of Kevin Johnson's 2001 campaign. Finally, he's 194 yards away from moving ahead of Webster Slaughter's 1,236 yards in 1989 and setting the team record for receiving yards in a season. Edwards is averaging close to 87 yards per game. He needs to average 49 per game during the team's final four contests to break the record. On the touchdown front, Edwards has 12 on the season, which is only one away from Gary Collins' team record of 13 set in 1963. With 72 points, no non-kicker has scored more points in a single season for the Browns since Leroy Kelley scored 120 in 1968. Meanwhile, Edwards is on pace to record 83 receptions this season, which would rank as the fifth-most in Browns single-season history. But Edwards doesn't even lead the Browns in receptions this season. That distinction belongs to Kellen Winslow, who has 65 catches on the year for 909 yards. Winslow needs just over 6 catches per game for the rest of the season to break his own team record for receptions in a season (89) that he marked last year, tying Ozzie Newsome's 1983 and '84 seasons. Meanwhile, he's 93 yards away from breaking Newsome's team record for the most receiving yards in a single season by a tight end. Newsome had 1,002 yards in 1981. This season, Winslow can mark the third 1,000-yard campaign by a tight end in Browns history and the first one not by Newsome. With two receivers in such a position to break long-standing team records, it's no wonder their quarterback is close to doing the same. Derek Anderson has 24 touchdowns and 3,062 passing yards on the year. Anderson is still on pace to break Brian Sipe's record of 30 touchdown passes set in 1980, while he also will likely register one of the Browns' top seasons in history in terms of passing yardage. Anderson already has marked the team's first 3,000-yard passing season since 2001 and the club's first 20-touchdown season since 1987. He also is on pace to finish ranked among the team's single-season best in completions. Running back Jamal Lewis has 803 yards on the season and is on track to record just the second 1,000-yard rushing season for the Browns since 1985. Meanwhile, his eight rushing touchdowns are the most by a Browns back since Kevin Mack's 10 in 1986. Overall, it adds up to an offense that's only 80 points away from breaking the team's single-season record for scoring. They need to average 20 points per game in their final four contests to break the record of 415 points set in 1964. While possible cold and inclement weather could provide a stiff challenge for the rest of the year, the Browns have a chance to make this already-memorable season even more memorable through the breaking of these records and others. Stay tuned. main site You know, regardless of our playoff stature and somehwat inconsistent play of late, when this season is all over (if these records are broken) we will have witnessed one of the greatest seasons in Browns history. Go Browns!!!

Indeed...it'll be a shame to waste it on a non-playoff campaign...but I appreciate the effort our boys put out each week...even in a loss like ARZ...they fought all the way till the end...and won (or at least tied) in my opinion.
They have accomplished so much this year.
I remember last season, people were looking at the Saints and saying why can't that be us...Well, it finally is us, I plan on enjoying the ride, for what it's worth. (post edited by moderator to remove entire article that was reposted as a quote)

We all knew these records have had a chance to fall this year...
It doesn't take away from the fact that it is surprising considering the long, storied history of the Cleveland Browns.

Two things...
A) We need to stay positive about our playoff chances until we are mathmatically ineligible, so let's stop the talk about a non-playoff campaign.
and
B) Even if we don't quite make it to the playoffs, I would be hard-pressed to see how these individual efforts could be considered a "waste". Besides, I think the best has yet to come with this young team. These guys breaking records are only in the early stages of their career. That is what's really amazing.

This is nice to read. We get so busy in the week to week drama that it is nice once and a while to read about the good that has been done. Those are a lot of records that could fall. That speaks volumes to how far our offense has come.

We have a handfull of boys on defense who are playing well, they just aren't as good of a unit yet, still missing a couple key pieces...

Fun read. It's amazing to think that for as good as the teams of the 80's did, there are records still going back to the 60's... and those might fall in the coming weeks. Those aren't small-time names or one-hit wonders up there either.... all of those record holders are in the Hall of Fame. Some pretty heady possibilities here for some kids that are going to be around for a long, long time. I agree with DC though, we'd be doing better with Couch back there. ::runs like hell::
Browns is the Browns

I think you're misinterpreting what I'm saying. I think we definitely will make the playoffs, however, it would be a shame that we have such a successful season, and not make the playoffs. I wouldn't consider it an unsuccessful season though.
I shouldn't have called it a waste, but it is in a way.

No, I knew what you were trying to say, but it didn't look good in print. Besides, it's all too common for us to hang our heads and let negative thoughts creep into every thread (especially on the heels of a loss) but I wanted to keep this as positive as possible. I have been waiting since the '80s for members of a Browns team to do something worth remembering and this article made me realize that it's all happening right before our eyes.

Yeah i know. I'm looking forward to Savages Solution to the DLine. We have witnessed what it means to have a great Oline and what it does for the offense, I hope to see it for the Defense in the next year or two!

You forgot to mention the Dome named after some major corporation. The Super Colon Flush 5000.com Dome! Yeah!
*Note: I am unaware as to whether or not Super Colon Flush 5000.com is a real product, company, and/or website therefore I am not pimping nor did I intend to in any way, shape or form, site pimp. I was merely using an example to elicit a comical response from fellow posters. If I have in any way breached message board etiquette or protocol, I am deeply sorry and may god have mercy on my soul.

Well...since you felt the need to chime in, let me respond...if that is such an annoyance to you, I would suggest that you all change the quote button to not include the entire post, if it bothers you that much. I just hit the button and say what I have to say. I don't alwyas feel like going through the post and editing out and all that...sometimes I don't have time to. So...

As moderators we will most certainly "chime in" whenever it is needed. Quoting long posts, numerous posts, and entire articles is not needed and an annoyance to many posters. You can just hit the reply button and scroll down to select what you would like to quote or simply reply to the person without quoting. Your lack of time is not an adequate excuse.

Chill dude ... no need to go "Rolle" on the Ref. Theyre trying to keep this board clean and running well. Its not his problem, that you have a problem that involves either A.) Not wanting to take 10 seconds to change a post due to laziness, or B.) dont have the time. Need i remind you that you are participating on their message board, at their expense. It's not so amazing to me that this team is putting up the numbers they are. They are a very good team that has a lot of untapped potential. Kinda makes you think about what we will be doing as we get more and more comfortable with each other and working as a unit. Especially if we can shore up the D during the '08 draft and FA period.
What I do find amazing, is the records themselves. It really shows how much the game has changed when the recieving record for a TE is only 1002 yards. And that Ozzie only had 2 1000+ yard seasons.
I've always found the fact that we haven't had a 1000 yard rusher since '85 (when both Mack and Byner rushed for over the 1k mark) That kinda shows you the slump we've been in.

Some Pro Bowl blurbs from the PD; didn't want to start a new thread so I guess I'll put 'em here. Quote:

Fans account for one-third of the final tally, while NFL players' and coaches' votes also count for a third each. The Browns' Josh Cribbs is the No. 2 kick returner in the AFC with 110,195 votes, behind New England's Wes Walker, who has 112,216 votes. Braylon Edwards is the No. 2 receiver with 334,402 votes, behind the Patriots' Randy Moss, who has 606,238. Derek Anderson is the No. 3 quarterback with 324,127 votes, behind New England's Tom Brady (776,475) and Indianapolis' Peyton Manning (740,302). Kellen Winslow is the No. 4 leading tight end with 176,112. Fans can vote on NFL.com until Tuesday. Coaches and players vote Dec. 13-14, and teams are announced Dec. 18.
Why the heck is Wes Welker first in Pro Bowl fan votes?!?!
K2 @ #4 in votes for TE, what a joke.
DA #3, I'm sure thats because people just don't see what Spectre does.
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

Edwards' '07 campaign currently ranks as the fourth-best in Browns history in terms of yardage. He's 25 yards away from passing Paul Warfield's 1968 season and 55 yards away from moving ahead of Kevin Johnson's 2001 campaign.
Awfully hard to compare guys from different eras. You have to wonder what Paul Warfield would've done in today's passing league. Not that they didn't pass back then, or that we don't run now...but the emphasis on the pass is greater now than then.
Braylon is having a very good season...and KW2 is having an extreamly good season. Both bennifiting from our improved OL.

Yeah, I can't figure out the Welker thing either. Luckily, fan votes are only a third of the total votes. I think the coaches and players around the league will give the nod to either Cribbs or Leon Washington of the Jets. This Sunday's game could be their own personal battle for the Pro Bowl.
