Quote:

In a somewhat surprising move, the Denver Broncos on Tuesday afternoon released starting defensive tackle Sam Adams, one of the best interior run-stuffers of his era, but a player who made little impact for the team in its first 12 games of the season.

It is possible, given Adams' resume and reputation, that another franchise could sign the 14-year veteran for the playoff stretch run. But having registered only nine tackles in 11 games in 2007, and having failed to deliver the kind of production the Broncos expected when they signed him as a free agent in June, it is also possible his long tenure could be in jeopardy.

Adams, 34, has played with six different teams.

First-year Broncos defensive coordinator Jim Bates wanted bigger-bodied tackles when he took over the job, and Adams seemed to be a good fit after the Cincinnati Bengals cut him following only one season with the club. But the Broncos rank only 27th in the NFL in total defense, are next to last against the run, and likely will go with younger players.

The play of Adams, whose effectiveness has never really been measured by his individual statistics, mirrored the disappointing performance of the Denver defense.

A longtime, proven defender versus the run, Adams was a mammoth inside presence who regularly commanded double-team blocking, and who could engulf offensive linemen. A classic two-gap player, he typically occupied two blockers on running downs, and usually allowed other defenders to flow to the football.

But age, and a recent history of knee injuries may finally have caught up to him.

His stay in Cincinnati, where he played only one season of the three-year contract that he signed last spring, was surprisingly short-lived, given his relationship with coach Marvin Lewis. But the Bengals wanted to get younger at defensive tackle and there were some concern there as well about Adams' health and age.

For his career, Adams has demonstrated remarkable durability, missing only 14 games. Adams has never sat out more than four games in a season and had not missed more than three games since 1999. Adams did have arthroscopic knee surgery shortly after the 2006 season ended, in part because he knew he wanted to return for a 14th year.

Although he has struggled at times with weight problems during his career, Adams weighed in the low 340s for teams with which he visited in the spring after Cincinnati released him, a manageable number for him.

A former Texas A&M star, Adams was a first-round draft choice of the Seattle Seahawks in 1994, the eighth player chosen overall that year. In stints with Seattle (1994-99), Baltimore (2000-01), Oakland (2002), Buffalo (2003-05), Cincinnati (2006), and Denver (2007), he has appeared in 206 games, with 177 starts, and has registered 461 tackles, 44 sacks, six forced fumbles, five recoveries and 33 pass deflections.

Maybe they'll ask Bob Golic to come out of retirement.

I think we've had our fill of aging, has-been defensive linemen on the downward slope of their career.

Much respect to ya, even if you wish me the opposite...

Yeah, didn't we have this conversation about 9 months ago when the Bengals released him? Thought so. He's done like Ted.

Hey, its not like we would be looking to sign him for a 3 or 4 year deal. He would be signed for the rest of the regular season and playoffs- then released. I do not see any harm in checking him out. The browns activated a ridiculously low number of linemen for the cardinal game- i think their is a need.

No gotta...after what I've seen..I'd rather finish the season with S.Smith at NT..and Leonard rotating in at DE..

Look. The guy has been released twice this season. There's something going on with him. If we are going to get another d-lineman, why don't we activate Melila Purcell or Chase Pittman, who have been practicing with the team since May?

Might be the reason we take a look.......if the reason for his release isn't injury related. We need bodies at this point.

boy...dogs can we please?!?!

I've been calling for these guys all year, and theyve gotten no love. And they looked good in the preseason.

Let Smith and Leonard handle DT work, and let Purcell and Pittman get minutes on the edge.

I watched him play in one game on the tube. He's done. What I saw was a big guy who didn't play with any discipline, who relied on his size and aggression but just didn't seem to play smart. He wasn't playing like a pro veteran.

I was disappointed and relieved at the same time. I hate to see a guy like that go down the pipe. It was nice, however, that he was doing it to someone else's team.

I say activate Pittman and Purcell if we need bodies that bad. At the least we'll have a better idea of just how much we need to raid the piggy bank after the season is over.

Where did this "Word" come from? I do believe that the Mules let go of a couple of ex-Browns earlier this season, should we go after them too? The Broncos finally stuck a fork in this guy because he is Done! No Thanks!!! JMHO Go Brownies!!!

Denver is where Defensive Line careers go to die. The spirit of his career has obviously passed on. Let it rest in peace.

Ted might be in better shape than Sam, and I'm not kidding. Adams, in his prime, was the best run stuffer in the league. Now he's just in need of the Biggest Loser.

Denver's D Line hasn't been as good as they had hoped all year and letting Adams walk is just another attempt to shake it up and get younger at said position. You just wonder if/when they will get it right because it didn't work out with the Brownchos they borrowed from us and so far the kids don't look much better.

What made the Brownco's line look good last year was Trevor Pryce, and they are feeling it this year now that he is gone. I saw one game, and that guy was a beast.

Trevor Pryce was with the Ravens last year. He left Denver via Free Agency prior to the 2006 season. I remember because there was talk of him coming here and I was miffed that he went to the Rats instead.

Oh was it last year, I thought it was this year, Thanks. I still think that Trevor's leaving is when the slide began...

I watched a couple of Denver games and he had some giddyup in him still - I wouldn't call him a total non-entity.

Its our biggest weakness. Probably the one position that we have little depth in.

I really don't want to see Fraser in there in the 4th Qtr as a team runs over him trying to keep a win.

I hope Savage would have some good reason not to bring him in if he didn't.

But Kelley, Robaire, Shaun and Roye have all been hurt/playing hurt the last 3 weeks. Kelley n Sam at NT sharing the load...and the other 3 Rotate the DE spots. Its a move a team looking to compete for a playoff spot just might make.

If we were 5-7...I'd say No and let Louis Leonard n Fraser get the reps.
But we aren't.

JMHO

May it please God and the court, we DO NOT gotta get this guy. Time for him to go to the booth or the elephant graveyard or whatever Siracusa or whatever his name is/was. Always seems to be another talking head; and as the panel of experts or ESPN analysis proves it is possible to pile higher and deeper and shallower and wider at the same time! Good to know!
