'Bulls---': GOP senators rebuke Tucker Carlson for downplaying Jan. 6 as 'mostly peaceful'

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called the Fox News host's portrayal a "mistake," while Sen. Kevin Cramer said it was “just a lie” to compare Jan. 6 to a peaceful protest.

WASHINGTON — Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Senate Republicans lashed out at conservative Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Tuesday after he characterized the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol as "mostly peaceful chaos."

At a GOP leadership news conference, McConnell, R-Ky., said he wanted to align himself with the letter sent to the U.S. Capitol Police force by Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger, who denounced Carlson for spreading “offensive and misleading conclusions” about the insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, including a “disturbing accusation” that Officer Brian Sicknick’s death had nothing to do with the riot.

"I want to associate myself entirely with the opinion of the chief and the Capitol Police about what happened on Jan. 6," McConnell said as he held up a copy of the letter. "It was a mistake, in my view, for Fox News to depict this in a way that’s completely at variance with what our chief law enforcement official here at the Capitol thinks.”

A handful of other Senate Republicans on Tuesday pushed back against Carlson's claim that Jan. 6 was "peaceful chaos," with Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina blasting the remarks as “bull***t.”

Carlson, the popular but controversial figure on Fox, made the comments to his millions of viewers Monday night as he aired selected clips of never-before-seen video of the Capitol on Jan. 6 and downplayed the hourslong insurrection, in which 140 police officers were injured.

“I think it’s [censored],” Tillis told reporters in the Capitol.

“I was here. I was down there, and I saw maybe a few tourists, a few people who got caught up in things,” he added. “But when you see police barricades breached, when you see police officers assaulted, all of that ... if you were just a tourist you should’ve probably lined up at the visitors’ center and came in on an orderly basis.”

Tillis said Carlson's depiction was “inexcusable” and compared it to the remarks of people who downplayed the fires and "devastation" during protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in 2020 following the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man.

Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer, a North Dakota conservative, said he was in the Capitol on Jan. 6 and firmly rejected Carlson's portrayal of that day as “some rowdy peaceful protest of Boy Scouts.”

“I think that breaking through glass windows and doors to get into the United States Capitol against the borders of police is a crime. I think particularly when you come into the chambers, when you start opening the members' desks, when you stand up in their balcony — to somehow put that in the same category as, you know, permitted peaceful protest is just a lie,” Cramer said.

“I think it doesn’t do any good for the narrative,” he added.

Carlson said on his show Monday night that while there were a few bad apples, most of the Jan. 6 rioters were peaceful, and he called them “sightseers,” not “insurrectionists.”

“The footage does not show an insurrection or a riot in progress,” he said. “Instead, it shows police escorting people through the building."

Asked whether House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., made a mistake by giving thousands of hours of Jan. 6 video exclusively to Carlson, McConnell declined to criticize his fellow GOP leader, saying, “My concern is how it was depicted."

“Clearly the chief of the Capitol police correctly described what most of us witnessed on Jan. 6,” added McConnell, who declined several times to criticize McCarthy.

Cramer said McCarthy could have given the video to “all sources equally,” rather than “one who is particularly good at conservative entertainment.”

And just think, the Republicans claim they want to investigate the weaponization of government agencies as Kevin McCarthy is the biggest weapon in the government there is at this time.

I don't agree with a lot of how Tucker pun it... but did find the 'new videos' fascinating... we have months of Jan 6 in prime time and never saw the Shaman dude walking around with the police.... the police trying to open doors for him... just seems strange...

I guess I buy not arresting him or trying to throw him out in the moment... I get de-escalation... but it still feels weird watching the police trying to open the doors to the senate for him...

Jan 6 has become such a political divider that is being used by both sides... it shouldn't be classified as mostly peaceful... but it also shouldn't be classified as the biggest threat to our democracy since the civil war...

There used to be a thing called the fairness doctrine. As it was written, it wouldn't have stopped all the problems we have with media outlets like Fox. But it would have helped. What we really need is a new Fairness document that makes it a criminal offense to purposely mislead the public. I recognize there is a fine line there that needs addressed.

You don't hear Tucker mention the noose outside the capital and the chants of hang Mike Pence. You won't hear him speak about 140 injured officers. You won't hear about the over 1000 arrests. You'll just hear about those cherry picked 4 minutes. And as you can see, that's what some other people will focus their attention on as well.

So if what you are says is true, that the situation on j 6!is as you describe , if the committee report is, in fact, the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, perhaps we can come up with a bipartisan solution. let’s just load all of the video on line for all Americans to watch if they choose to do do so. Then let them draw their own conclusions.

That would be wonderful! The problem is Kevin McCarthy has refused to release it to the public and only released it to Tucker Carlson. Which out of over 40,000 hours of footage decided to cherry pick only four minutes of it. The bipartisan solution you speak of was politicized by Kevin McCarthy. People can't look at the truth when a partisan politician has decided to conceal the truth. This is shameful by anyone's standards.

And since you haven't seen the footage how would you know the committee cherry picked it? They produced far more than four minutes of footage. You do realize that cherry picking something means your showing the exception of what was going on instead of what was actually going on in the grand scheme of things, right?

What cherry picking? You mean when they focused on police being beaten or sprayed? Or when property was removed? When they released content showing senators on both sides of the aisle were outraged and felt in imminent danger? When they revealed why there wasn't better security and how/why requests for assistance had been denied? You mean that selected cherry picking? You mean like the eye witness testimony of the people present? ..... if not please be specific.

FYI - the Jan 6th committee was established because for the first time in history the peaceful transition of power was interrupted and an attempt was made to prevent the confirmation of Biden as POTUS. Maybe you think that's not a big deal. Many think it's important.

I think the Jan 6 riot was wrong. I think the Jan 6th committee was overblown with political agendas. I did not see our government watch tape after tape after tape of the mostly peaceful protests of rioters all over the country in 2020. If wrong is wrong, then all should be held to the same accountability. If not, it is only used to score political points. That is what this video exposed to me. A party that does not care about riots that hurt people, people's property but rather how to score political points and these new revelation videos expose that hypocrisy. The Jan 6th riot was wrong, and all involved should be held accountable not because it went against a certain political party but because a riot is just plain wrong. I don't care if the riot was at the capital or in a neighborhood. Someone got hurt or lost property and all those involved should be held to account. Political points should be the last of our cares but since it is the #1 priority of our leaders it shows us just how lost we have become as a country.

There have been over 1000 arrests. It sure seems like somebody cares. Just not those trying to downplay it like it was no big deal. But I agree with you that trying to stop the certification of a president was political. Mostly peaceful my ass.

Therefore, the Fox viewers aren't getting the info about how Murdoch has admitted his network lied. They aren't discussing it over there. And they aren't getting the facts about the insurrection either. Only what Hannity and Carlson tell them.

In fact, As of last night, Carlson is going on and on with his "it was just peaceful tourists" thing. That may have changed today, I've not heard at all. But the word came down from the top, Fox show hosts aren't to discuss the case on air.. Any bets that they haven't reported that Trumps Lawyer admitted to lying about his election?

The revelations that have come into the light about FOX news are quite revealing. Actually just confirming what many of us already knew. But when it comes to discussing pending litigation I think that's a pretty standard thing across the board not to make any public statements about the case. Unless of course you're trump who lacks the total inability to stop himself.

CNN and MSNBC are without a doubt, Left Leaning. But you don't what you know what you will see on those networks? Things that Democrats screw up. What you won't see on Fox is anything that makes a republican (MAGA) look bad.
