Trump warns of 'potential death and destruction' if he's charged in hush money probe

The former president escalated his attacks on the Manhattan district attorney's investigation with an explicit reference to violence in an overnight post on Truth Social.

Former President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric against the Manhattan district attorney's probe into a hush money payment made during his 2016 campaign, warning in an overnight post on his Truth Social site about "potential death and destruction" if he is charged in the case.

Last weekend, Trump said leaks indicated he would be arrested in the investigation and called on his supporters to "PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!" Since then, he has used social media to attack Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, calling for his "removal" from the post and claiming without evidence that the probe is politically motivated.

But the early Friday post on Truth Social marks Trump's most explicit reference to violence yet, echoing his intensified rhetoric during the events that led-up to the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters.

"What kind of person can charge another person, in this case a former President of the United States, who got more votes than any sitting President in history, and leading candidate (by far!) for the Republican Party nomination, with a Crime, when it is known by all that NO Crime has been committed, & also known that potential death & destruction in such a false charge could be catastrophic for our Country?" Trump wrote. "Why & who would do such a thing? Only a degenerate psychopath that truely [sic] hates the USA!"

Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen has come out as a witness against his ex-boss in the DA's investigation. Cohen claims that Trump directed him to pay adult film star Stormy Daniels $130,000 to buy her silence over an alleged affair with Trump, which the former president has repeatedly denied. Bragg is investigating whether Trump falsified business records in reporting $130,000 in payments reimbursing Cohen as a legal expense.

Republican lawmakers have rallied around the former president since he predicted he would be arrested, using their House majority to call on Bragg to testify before Congress. But House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., a close Trump ally, said people should not protest if Trump is indicted. “Nobody should harm one another ...We want calmness out there,” McCarthy told reporters.

In a Thursday post, Trump pushed back on suggestions that people remain calm. "OUR COUNTRY IS BEING DESTROYED, AS THEY TELL US TO BE PEACEFUL!" he wrote.

Trump's call to action has so far received a subdued reception from supporters, with small crowds showing up to protest the DA's actions.

Trump faces a separate inquiry by the Justice Department's special counsel into his actions relating to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters. Ahead of the violence and rioting, Trump had used rhetoric to fire up his base, writing in a social media post, "Be there, will be wild!"

Five people died during and after the attack and more than 100 police officers were injured. Democrats have pinned the blame on Trump, accusing him of inciting the riot to block the certification of Joe Biden's presidential victory.

The U.S. Capitol Police are taking security precautions to prepare for protests stemming from a potential Trump indictment.

They may be delaying charges hoping trump says something that incriminates himself even more. Wouldn’t be the first time. I do know his lawyer in this case has a shorter fuse than trump. If you can believe that.

Envelope containing suspicious powder sent to DA Alvin Bragg’s NYC office

A suspicious powder was sent to the Manhattan district attorney’s office in Lower Manhattan on Friday, court officials said.

The powder was found in an envelope — marked “Alvin” — delivered by the US Postal Service to the mailroom at 80 Centre St., court officials confirmed.

NYPD officers were on the scene just after noon, and no injuries were reported, the official said.

The powder was deemed not hazardous about three hours later, according to the official.

The DA has informed the office that it was immediately contained and that the NYPD Emergency Service Unit and the NYC Department of Environmental Protection determined there was no dangerous substance, a DA spokesperson said.

The potentially harmful piece of mail comes as DA Alvin Bragg’s office has been presenting its case to a grand jury to possibly indict former President Donald Trump.

A pair of bomb threats were called into the courthouse earlier this week, delaying the proceedings once, although it was unclear if they were connected to Trump’s case.

The powder was found hours after Trump threatened Bragg with “death and destruction” if the former president is indicted in New York City over hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016 during his first campaign for the White House.

This may just be my take on it and nothing more, but this death threat seems different than the many guys like Bragg probably get.. I wonder if this blows back on Trump.. I mean, this guy can't keep his foot out of his mouth... What an idiot.

I am not sure how? I never placed any type of odds one way or the other on who may have sent the letter. I simply said the possibilities are wide ranging. The only thing I know for sure is that I didn't send the letter. The only thing you know is that you didn't send the letter, assuming you didn't send the letter.

Now, just to be clear so people don't get in to an uproar, I don't think anybody on this board sent the letter, and to be fair, Perfect mentions some percentage. I would concede that it is probably at least the percentage he mentioned that it was indeed a Trump supporter that did send the letter.

Trump vows to remove ‘thugs and criminals’ from justice system at rally, amid legal woes

Former President Trump vowed to remove the “thugs and criminals” from the justice system at his first official campaign rally of the 2024 cycle on Saturday, as he faces down a potential indictment.

“When this election is over, I will be the president of the United States,” Trump said at an airport tarmac in Waco, Texas. “You will be vindicated and proud, and the thugs and criminals who are corrupting our justice system will be defeated, discredited and totally disgraced.”

The former president took aim at the various prosecutors investigating him in New York, Georgia and Washington, D.C., decrying “prosecutorial misconduct” and telling a crowd of his supporters that “our enemies are desperate to stop us.”

“Our opponents have done everything they can to crush our spirit and to break our will, but they failed. They’ve only made us stronger,” Trump said. “And 2024 is the final battle. That’s going to be the big one. You put me back in the White House, their reign will be over, and America will be a free nation once again.”

Trump’s remarks come just one week after he ignited a political firestorm by suggesting that he could be arrested as soon as Tuesday in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s (D) hush money probe.

While his prediction has yet to come to fruition, the former president has doubled down on his claims, warning on Friday that an indictment could result in “potential death & destruction.”

He struck a similarly bombastic tone as he looked ahead to the 2024 election at Saturday’s rally.

“Either we surrender to the demonic forces abolishing and demolishing, and happily doing so, our country, or we defeat them in a landslide on Nov. 5, 2024,” Trump said. “Either the deep state destroys America, or we destroy the deep state.”

The former president also continued his recent torrent of attacks on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who is widely considered Trump’s biggest potential competitor despite having yet to announce a 2024 bid.

“Florida has been tremendously successful for many years, long before this guy became governor,” Trump said on Saturday. “Florida has been successful for decades, in fact probably as or more successful than it is now.”

This is how people who identify excessively with their group act pretty much regardless of the group. I think you (people in general) also have to be careful about calling one person's actions the "own" actions of their entire group. Maybe that's not how you intended it, but your last sentence can read that way with the previous context.

I get where you are coming from though. The blame game seems prevalent these days.

It does seem odd that while one man is creating the exact same situation as he did on Jan. 6th that ended in violence, using the same type of rhetoric and the same blueprint in general to create yet another violent situation, you post about in a manner that seems to suggest all things are equal. We actually saw the same type of response after Jan. 6th that it was the other side which was actually responsible. Or that it was "possibly" the other side that was responsible. Once you've already seen the movie then ending is rather predictable. There was also a bomb threat earlier in the week.

You don't have to be someone who identifies with a group to see that. You also don't need to identify with a group to see who the only ones making excuses for it are.

Rather than blaming everything on "the devil" or railing at Trump, is it not okay to remind everyone once in awhile that their actions matter, too? What I write here will have no effect on Trump. It might make posters think.

Everyone knows "the devil" is bad. It's a given.

Saying something bad is bad is like saying water is wet. What's the purpose? Maybe it makes you feel better. It doesn't do anything for me.

There are many people that will never hear much of it because they don't follow news sources that report such things. I guess the purpose is just like many of the things posted on this site. Because it's relevant information based upon what each forum is designated for. In this case we are posting in Palus Politics forum. It's very purpose is to post political news and updates to existing stories. I find the continued spread of violent rhetoric the likes of which already helped lead the violent uprising of Jan. 6th to be a very real part of that.

Too many people ignored such behavior in the past and most people saw where that led. I'm not sure why one would think we should stop addressing his continuing behavior since at this time he's the front running candidate for the Republican presidential nominee in 2024 or simply ignore it.

The problem isn't posting the news.

The problem is expecting everyone to comment on how bad the obviously bad things are while ignoring the insidiously bad behavior that ultimately leads to the obviously bad.

I prefer to "shine the light" on all of it, not just the stuff that I agree with. Life doesn't happen in a vacuum. I tend to think in ecological terms like systems and environment and interdependence. Trying to focus the light on one thing until it's dried out and dead is the equivalent action of a cruel, unthinking child setting bugs on fire with a magnifying glass just to watch them burn. That's how you act with Trump. Unfortunately, focusing on the negative of Trump and his alleged supporters (it seems everyone that doesn't agree with your singlemindedness) doesn't turn him to ash no matter how long you try to do it.

Everyone has the right to post what they wish. Even you. I post about the things I see as the biggest threats and matters that concern me the most. I don't care if people respond but what I do care about is people posting as if it doesn't matter or that try to rationalize it. So "shine your light". Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has been investigating Trump for hush money payments made leading up to the 2016 presidential election.

Enough legal evidence was found that he committed a crime. He needs to be processed and if he committed a crime he should go to jail. There is no other story here. Just like any other US citizen.
