Freddy gets my vote. There are some great live clips from old performances on Youtube that prove he's not just a studio voice. He hit all those highs and lows consistantly on stage.

Wow I was reading this thread and was saying to myself I'm going to say Ian Gillian, and figured everyone would be like who the heck is that guy. Have you ever heard his album with Black Sabbath? Born Again? Some amazing range, He paved the way for a generation of music, that played with allot of range change, ala heavy metal/glam metal, whatever you wanna call it.
Oh and Micheal Hannon of American Dog!, plus he can play the bass a little bit too!, and has been known to be a Salty Dog at times, but its all good, I would actually proclaim him the official rockstar of this message board!
I was gonna put Danny Joe & Ronnie Van Zandt, down but I was thinking they were more southern / southern rock, when i think rock i think metal rock.....LOL...must be the age....but reguarless, they both are in my top 5, two of the greatest ever.......
Going old school I could name many but the top of my list would be Freddie Mercury for pure vocal talent but my favorite is Rob Halford.

To me the best there is is Aaron Lewis, and even though he is from American Idol Chris Daughtry is a good rock vocalist. Oh and the guy who died from Alice in Chains was awesome too.

Geoff Tate, good call Queensyche had some really good albums, there most famous Empire, I think is their worst but the self titled album, Operation Mindcrime and Rage for Order, rock.

Ian Gillian is a legend but I know him from Deep Purple not Black Sabbath. My buddy who is a drum player from Scotland played with Gillian back in the 70s over in the UK. Last year when Gillian played the House of Blues here in Cleveland we went to the show and Ian recognized him and we got go back stage after the show. Great guy, lives a clean life now.

Born Again is a rare Sabbath album and is hard to come by in the states, I got mine in Italy about 15 years ago. It's not a typical Sabbath album, it more like a heavy glam style, dude can scream sing with the best.
His work with Deep Purple is classic stuff as well. I still laugh when the radio would always play knock'in on your back door, without any clue of what the actual meaning of the song is.
1. Martin Fry from the band ABC. I doubt few here know of him.
2. Roger Daltrey (pre 1980's) of The Who. I believe at one time he was ranked #1 in an Rolling Stone poll back in the 70s. Freddie Mercury is right here too.
3. Don't laugh at this one, but...Karen Carpenter. OK...go ahead and laugh, but her voice was phenominal.

I saw Purple twice on thier reunion tour and he totally shook the Toledo Sports area with his vocals, we ended up going to Detroit to see them again at Joe Louis areas and he once again blew us away, Normally to go to a concert ya start drinking early, and by the time the band is on your feeling really good, having fun, listening to the music, hitting on the good looking girls....well I drank 3-4 beers max before the concert, sat & watched I wanted to make sure I remembered this one, and him & the rest of purple was a treat.... Nice to hear he;s living a clean life,

She wasnt rock but Cyni Lauper is a very good singer. A couple years ago she did a acoustic singing tour and I got tix for my wife for our anniversary or her B day or something I messed up, I cant remember but she was very good. I took my wife to see Jewel do the same type of thing and he was great as well.

I've seen both of them too, I was surprised how really good both of them were.
While we are talking about the women, Melissa Etheridge has a pretty good rock voice, IMO.
