Of course I wouldn't expect you to understand. Often times it's a tough call for doctors. Here in Tennessee as in many other red states, abortion for the life of the mother is in question. They have constructed laws that blur the lines of when and under what circumstances a doctor can end a pregnancy to save the life of the mother. The laws are written quite vaguely so a doctor is never sure whether they may be convicted of doing what they believe is right. I think there are many doctors who would not wish to practice in a state where those conditions apply.

But you just keep screaming that mantra. For some reason you seem to think it's working for you.

This is what's called "the law of unintended consequences. "

This is what happens when politicians ignore medical professionals and set policy to score points.

No abortions? no problem. No deliveries of full-term babies? Big problem.
Does anyone else see the rich irony here?

Let's see the political hacks solve this one.

I don't feel it has to do as much with banning abortion as it does with liability. 10-15 years ago or so, a number of county hospitals in this area, as well as many doctors, thought about getting out of childbirth due to the exorbitant price of liability insurance.

So now they claim that periods are liberal and woke?

Idaho Republicans block ‘woke’ free tampons in schools proposal

Republicans in the Idaho House blocked a bill that would provide free menstrual products to public school students, calling it “liberal” and “woke.”

The bill would have funded free menstrual product dispensers for sixth through 12th grade students in girls bathrooms at a cost of about $300,000 per year, or $3.50 per student, after a one-time installation cost of about $435,000.

“It’s not a lot of money in the state’s budget,” bill sponsor state Rep. Rod Furniss (R) said in committee Thursday. “Today is a step to preserve womanhood, to give it a chance to start right, to not be embarrassed or feel alienated or ashamed, or to feel like they need to stay home from school due to period poverty.”

Idaho is projected to have a $1.4 billion revenue surplus this year.

Advocates for the bill say that the state already funds toilet paper, soap and other hygiene products for students. The Idaho Period Project estimated that three in four East Idaho students missed class due to lack of access to menstrual products.

The bill failed on a tie vote on Monday, with state Rep. Heather Scott (R) calling the proposal a “very liberal policy.”

“Why are our schools obsessed with the private parts of our children?” Scott said.

Another Republican legislator called the language in the bill — “period poverty” and “menstrual equity” — “woke terms.”

Fifteen states and Washington, D.C., have passed legislation mandating that free menstrual products be provided to students. Five more have set up grant systems for schools to provide the products, according to the nonprofit Alliance for Period Supplies.

One in four students who menstruate had trouble accessing period supplies in 2021, a survey from the nonprofit found. The same survey found that four in five students either missed class time due to lack of access to menstrual products or knew someone who did.

There my be a difference of opinion as to whose responsibility is to provide such products to these girls. But using the excuse that it's "woke or liberal" to propose such an idea is yet another on the list of crazy.

Prosecutors accept deal with George Santos in Brazilian fraud case

Prosecutors in Brazil have agreed to a deal with Rep. George Santos in a case in which he is accused of defrauding a Rio de Janeiro area clerk of $1,300 over clothes and shoes in 2008, documents obtained by CNN show.

A petition from Santos’ attorney requesting a deal says Santos would agree to formally confess to the crime and pay damages to the victim, a Rio de Janeiro area clerk, as is required under Brazilian law.

A memo from prosecutors agreeing to the deal last week asked the defense for assurances they have the ability to contact the victim to repay him before the deal is finalized.

In a statement to CNN, the prosecutors’ office acknowledged the memo but stressed that the deal is not final until all conditions are met.

The petition from Santos’ attorney, filed in January, requests a non-prosecutorial agreement in lieu of a trial for his client, arguing that Santos is now gainfully employed and “re-socialized.” The petition also requested permission for Santos to be contacted by the court via email or phone, and participate in the proceedings via videoconference.

Agreements can be reached in non-violent cases where the sentencing minimum is under four years.

Santos did not comment when asked about this reporting on Capitol Hill by CNN’s Manu Raju. CNN has reached out to attorneys for Santos in Brazil and the United States.

In 2010, Santos told police he wrote bad checks from a stolen checkbook belonging to an elderly man his mother cared for to purchase the items.

Santos told the New York Post in December he had not been charged with any crime in Brazil. “I am not a criminal here – not here or in Brazil or any jurisdiction in the world. Absolutely not. That didn’t happen,” he said at the time.

After Santos left for the United States, Brazilian authorities could not find an address to serve him papers intimating him to appear in court, which eventually led to the archiving of the case, until it was reopened in January.

Prosecutors could not comment further, as the case is under a gag order.

Lol… Remember the narrative …”What crime has he committed?” This guy needs to go. But the party of law and order needs to keep their control. So here we are again…we’re given a deplorable liar from the GOP as a viable law maker. Pfff Gopers at war with the LBGTQ community unless it’s one of their own.

Florida Principal Out After Viewing Of Michelangelo's 'David' Upsets Parents

The principal of Florida’s Tallahassee Classical School is out of a job after parents complained that their sixth-grade children were shown Michelangelo’s 16th century “David” sculpture, with one parent calling it “pornographic,” the Tallahassee Democrat first reported.

The now-former principal, Hope Carrasquilla, told HuffPost the situation was also “a little more complicated than that,” noting that the usual protocol is to send parents a letter before students are shown such classical artwork.

Due to “a series of miscommunications,” the letter did not go out to the sixth-grade parents, and some complained, Carrasquilla said.

One parent was “point-blank upset,” Carrasquilla continued, and “felt her child should not be viewing those pieces.”

The board of the charter school decided Monday to give the principal the choice to resign or be fired after less than a year in the job. She was the school’s third principal since it opened in the fall of 2020, per the Tallahassee Democrat.

The move comes as conservatives in Florida and elsewhere battle to step up their input in primary education.

Michelangelo’s marble sculpture of the Biblical figure David was crafted between 1501 and 1504, originally commissioned for an Italian cathedral. It now resides at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence.

Carrasquilla said she had taught in classical education for a decade and knew that “once in a while you get a parent who gets upset about Renaissance art” — hence the letter. She was not surprised by the reaction from the school board chair, Barney Bishop, but the fact that other board members went along with him was unexpected.

In a call with HuffPost, Bishop emphasized that the nude sculpture incident was one of multiple issues with Carrasquilla. He declined to go into specifics, citing advice from the school’s employment lawyers.

Bishop explained he was lobbying for legislation that would give parents even more input in primary education.

“Parental rights trump everything else,” Bishop said. He added that the pandemic’s remote teaching gave parents a clearer window into their children’s education and prompted some to choose schools like Tallahassee Classical.

“They didn’t like the woke indoctrination that was going on,” he said.

Bishop accused Carrasquilla of trying to “gin up a lot of publicity” by sharing her experience.

Carrasquilla said many other parents and faculty members were upset about her ouster and have been reaching out with support.

The Tallahassee school is a public charter institution that focuses on classical learning, a teaching philosophy centered on a traditional Western liberal arts education that aims to impart critical thinking skills children can use throughout their lives. Classical learning is also popular within the Christian homeschooling movement.

The Tallahassee Classical School is affiliated with Hillsdale College, a conservative Christian institution that has sought to expand its influence over the last decade by helping set up public charter schools. Hillsdale briefly cut ties with the Tallahassee school in early 2022 for not meeting improvement standards, but it later regained affiliation.

Hillsdale has raised funds for the charter school network by pledging to fight “leftist” and “distorted” teaching of American history, such as the lessons about slavery contained in The New York Times’ 1619 Project, the newspaper reported last year.

“We don’t use pronouns,” Bishop said. “We don’t teach CRT and we don’t ever mention 1619 — those are not appropriate subjects for our kids.”

There's a lot to chew on with suggesting 12 year old kids have been subjected to pornography when viewing a piece of classical art.

But maybe when we talk about "Parents Rights" and the ability for parents to dictate things at their school - it might be worth realizing that the loudest noise comes from the smallest % of the fringe - on either side. A principal losing their job over something like this might just be the start. Parents looking for anyone else to blame for their kids failure/behaviour/attitude ... whatever - are sure to point fingers at schools and teachers before they ever self assess their on impact influence and responsibility. Unintended consequences indeed.

An issue I have is that if you as a parent don't want your kids to learn about certain things or see certain things, there should be a way to opt out of those classes. The actual problem as I see is that what they're actually doing is insuring that if they don't want their children learning about certain things, they want to make sure your children can't learn about it either.

They're all about their parental rights as long as that includes that parents who feel any differently than themselves don't have their parental rights.

So now they've decided to cancel Dolly Parton in Wisconsin.....

First Graders Not Allowed to Sing ‘Controversial’ Dolly Parton Song About Acceptance

A Wisconsin school forbade first graders from singing a Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus song about acceptance at this year’s spring concert, saying it’s too “controversial.”

The song, “Rainbowland,” celebrates acceptance and includes lyrics like “wouldn't it be nice to live in paradise. Where we're free to be exactly who we are.”

It started earlier this month, when a first grader was brainstorming songs to perform for the spring concert at Heyer Elementary. Her mother, Sarah Schindler, said that her list included “Rainbowland,” as well as Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” and Kermit the Frog’s “Rainbow Connection.” A few days later, the girl told her mother that she was not allowed to sing “Rainbow Connection” or “Rainbowland.”

“Rainbow Connection” was ultimately allowed, but the Dolly Parton song wasn’t, according to a teacher with the school district.

“My first graders were so excited to sing Rainbowland for our spring concert but it has been vetoed by our administration. When will it end?” Melissa Tempel, a Heyer Elementary teacher—and Schindler’s daughter’s teacher—tweeted last week.

“4 years ago we had an active diversity team,” Tempel said in another tweet. “Now we are Florida.”

Some critics believe the songs were banned as part of a greater crackdown within the school district on LGBTQ issues. One Waukesha resident, Leigh Radichel Tracy, whose children are in the same school district, told the Times that “the School District of Waukesha has really cracked down on anything LBGTQ.”

“It’s so sad that this is seen as a ‘controversial issue’ by the School District of Waukesha. It’s a song about a beautiful place of acceptance,” she said.

Schindler reportedly reached out to her daughter’s teacher, the school principal at Heyer Elementary, and the school district of Waukesha. Rainbows are often associated with pride, but Schindler said in a comment to the Times that rainbows are also associated with springtime. She said she doesn’t understand why the song would be controversial. “We love Dolly Parton!” Schindler told the Los Angeles Times.

Superintendent James Sebert told Insider that a teacher checked with the school principal “to determine if the song would be acceptable to use in a first grade concert.” The principal checked the song and decided it “could be deemed controversial” in accordance with the district’s "Controversial Issues in the Classroom” policy.

Multiple members of the Waukesha school district did not immediately respond to requests for comment from VICE News.

Wisconsin isn’t the only state where there’s been a crackdown on LGBTQ people. Anti-LGBTQ sentiment has swept parts of the U.S., with hundreds of bills that would restrict LGBTQ rights introduced this year alone. GOP politicians are targeting trans healthcare, LGBTQ students in schools, and drag queens, and more.

I'm always skeptical if I see a partial quote about something like this. . . so here are the full lyrics of this controversial song.

"Hey Miley
It's me, I'm in Nashville
I'm on my way to Dollywood, busy as you are
Can't get enough stuff to do, can't
But anyway, I'm excited about singing with you
So I'm just gonna turn my, CD player on with you singing
I'm gon' put this on a cassette
Sing along with it, and then I'll run you off a CD later
Oh, I'm so high tech
I got a flip phone, too
But anyhow, see what you think
And um, here I go"
Come on
Living in a Rainbowland
Where everything goes as planned
And I smile
'Cause I know if we try, we could really make a difference in this world
I won't give up, I'll sleep a wink
It's the only thought I think, you know where I stand
I believe we can start living in a Rainbowland
Living in a Rainbowland
Where you and I go hand in hand
Oh, I'd be lying if I said this was fine
All the hurt and the hate going on here
We are rainbows, me and you
Every color, every hue
Let's shine on through
Together, we can start living in a Rainbowland
Living in a Rainbowland
The skies are blue and things are grand
Wouldn't it be nice to live in paradise
Where we're free to be exactly who we are
Let's all dig down deep inside
Brush the judgment and fear aside
Make wrong things right
And end the fight
'Cause I promise ain't nobody gonna win (come on)
Living in a Rainbowland
Where you and I go hand in hand
Oh, I'd be lying if I said this was fine
All the hurt and the hate going on here
We are rainbows, me and you
Every color, every hue
Let's shine on through
Together, we can start living in a Rainbowland
Living in a Rainbowland
Where you and I go hand in hand together (let's do it together)
Chase dreams forever
I know there's gonna be a greener land
We are rainbows, me and you
Every color, every hue
Let's shine on
Together, we can start living in a Rainbowland
"Hey Miley
Look, I know it sounds scrambled when I'm singing it with you
Wish I could do a little better
At least, I might not get it all the way through
'Cause I'm not sure of the structure without you
But I think this could work well, don't you?
If not, like I said
I'll write that love song for you
You probably wrote it about some boy you loved, didn't ya?
Well"

‘Ruby Bridges’ movie under review by Florida school district after parent complaint

A film about a Black first grader who integrated an all-White elementary school in the South is under review in a Florida school district after a parent objected to the movie’s use of slurs and argued it could teach students that “White people hate Black people,” according to school officials and documents obtained by CNN.

A parent of a second grade student at North Shore Elementary in St. Petersburg filed a formal complaint March 6 requesting the removal of the 1998 movie “Ruby Bridges” from the school’s list of approved films. This came after the movie was shown to about 60 second-graders on March 2 as part of a Black History Month lesson, Isabel Mascareñas, a spokesperson for Pinellas County Schools, told CNN.

The parent, whose name is redacted in the copy of the complaint shared with CNN, wrote that the movie is not appropriate for second graders and would be better suited for an eighth grade American history class. The parent objected in part to racial slurs used in the film, depictions of a child placing a noose around a doll’s neck and characters threatening a hanging.

The parent wrote that the film could teach students racial slurs, “how they are different” and that “White people hate Black people.”

After receiving the complaint, “the school will now engage in the formal objection process to review the challenged material,” Mascareñas said, citing the district’s policies on contested instructional materials.

The movie has not been removed from all district schools and still remains in the district’s movie library, she said.

Teaching materials in Florida schools are becoming increasingly contentious as Republican state lawmakers have pushed for restrictions of lessons and instructional tools involving race, sexuality and gender. Among the resulting legislation is a bill Gov. Ron DeSantis signed last year that requires books in classroom libraries be pre-approved materials or vetted by a media specialist trained by Florida’s Department of Education.

Two weeks before the movie was shown to second graders at North Shore Elementary, permission forms were sent to the students’ parents along with a link to the “Ruby Bridges” trailer, Mascareñas said. The parent who filed the objection was among the two families that opted to not have their students watch the movie, she said.

“It was communicated with the parent that the school would not have any future showings during this school year as the movie had already been shown,” Mascareñas said.

The film’s namesake, Ruby Bridges, was 6 when she became the first Black student to attend William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans on November 14, 1960. Flanked by four federal marshals, Bridges passed through an angry crowd of White people hurling slurs and protesting her presence after the desegregation of New Orleans schools was ordered by a federal judge – six years after the Supreme Court made racial segregation in public schools illegal with Brown v. Board of Education. The film is a dramatized retelling of her story.

Toni Ann Johnson, the film’s screenwriter, told CNN she believes second graders are not too young to watch the movie if their teacher can provide historical context and answer their questions. Teachers across the country have told her the movie is a “valuable teaching tool,” she said.

“The reason I think that second grade is not too young is that by that age, children are recognizing racial differences. Ruby was 6 years old when she desegregated William Frantz,” Johnson said.

“If children are old enough to be called the N-word and learn what it means, then it’s my opinion that second graders who are 7 and 8 years of age can and should begin to learn about the history of racism in this country,” Johnson said.

“Parents who don’t want their children to learn this story in public schools should have the right to opt out,” she said. “But they should not have the right to prevent teachers from teaching the Ruby Bridges story to other children receiving a public school education.”

So let's recap. Parents were given the choice to either give permission for their children to see this movie or not. But a parent who did not give permission of their children to see the move and did not see the movie, feel it's their right to dictate the choice of the parents who did give permission? Murica!

Now you wouldn't be trying to say that only right leaning people think their personal choices should dictate other people's behavior would you?

You do understand the thread title don't you? Feel free to add related context or you can certainly start your own thread to make your point if you wish. Mostly on the left they just want to be left alone to pursue their own choices without discrimination. That's getting harder and harder to accomplish these days.

I answered it and it has nothing to do with the topic. I'm not going to aid you in derailing this thread any further.

Texas judge strikes down free HIV drugs, cancer screenings under Obamacare

The nationwide ruling holds that the health panel that decided what services insurers must cover is unconstitutional.

A federal judge on Thursday struck down a key provision of the Affordable Care Act, jeopardizing free coverage of a wide range of preventive care services including cancer screenings and mental health checks.

District Court Judge Reed O’Connor, the author of several previous rulings against Obamacare, sided with a group of conservative employers in Texas who argued that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force that made those requirements has been acting unconstitutionally since 2010 and blocking enforcement of the rules nationwide.

O’Connor, a President George W. Bush appointee to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, also ruled that the requirement to cover the HIV prevention drug PrEP violated the religious rights of the employers and could not be enforced against them.

The individuals had standing to sue, O’Connor wrote, because “compulsory coverage for those services violates their religious beliefs by making them complicit in facilitating homosexual behavior, drug use, and sexual activity outside of marriage between one man and one woman.”

O’Connor had already sided with the challengers on these points back in September, but had not said whether his ruling would apply only to the people suing, to everyone in Texas, or nationwide, and requested a further briefing. O’Connor ultimately granted the pleas for a “universal” ruling, upending the national insurance market.

The Biden administration is expected to appeal.

We don't care if people that don't believe in our religious views get proper healthcare or die because that's what God teaches us. God is love.
