Fox News and Tucker Carlson, the right-wing extremist who hosted the network’s highly rated 8pm hour, have severed ties, the network said in a stunning announcement Monday.

The announcement came one week after Fox News settled a monster defamation lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems for $787.5 million over the network’s dissemination of election lies.

Fox News said that Carlson’s last show was Friday, April 21.

Carlson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on his departure.

This is a developing story…

Tucker Carlson and Fox News part ways

Tucker Carlson has parted ways with Fox News, the network said on Monday.

“We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor,” the network said in a statement.

Carlson’s last show was Friday, the network said.

Fox said it would air a new program called “Fox News Tonight” at 8 p.m. starting Monday evening as an interim show helmed by rotating Fox News personalities until a new host is named.

Carlson was Fox’s top-rated prime time host, netting an average of more than 3 million viewers per night, the most of any pundit on cable television.

Carlson’s departure from the network came less than a week after it agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle a defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems over coverage of former President Trump’s false claims of voter fraud and the company’s software.

Depositions taken by Dominion’s lawyers exposed a number of private communications from top hosts at the network, including Carlson.

In one widely publicized text exchange with fellow primetime hosts Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham, Carlson said he hated Trump “passionately” and called the former president’s claims of voter fraud “insane.”

We'll be hearing how FOX News is going woke and afraid to let Carlson tell the truth and how they are trying to cancel him. It would be no surprise if some media outlet, and I use that term loosely, like OAN or Newsmax puts him back on the air quickly.

In the interest of not being one sided in all of this, CNN also fired Don Lemon this morning.

Don Lemon Announces He's Been Terminated By CNN: 'I Am Stunned'

"After 17 years at CNN I would have thought that someone in management would have had the decency to tell me directly," Lemon wrote in a Twitter statement.

Don Lemon has been fired from CNN after 17 years with the network.

The anchor announced the news on Twitter on Monday morning, telling followers he was “stunned.”

“I was informed this morning by my agent that I have been terminated by CNN,” he wrote. “After 17 years at CNN I would have thought that someone in management would have had the decency to tell me directly. At no time was I ever given any indication that I would not be able to continue to do the work I have loved at the network.”

“It is clear that there are some larger issues at play,” he added, before thanking his colleageus and wishing them the best.

He’ll find an audience. Grifters always do. Selling his soul for viewers, book deals, etc. Feeding the base a steady stream of hate while he cashes checks and lives a privileged life. Which he’s had his entire life. He’d not spit on half his viewers if they were on fire. But he’ll gladly say any hateful thing to get them to feed him their rage money.
He’s a ghoul.

is it too conspiracy theory-esque to think that maybe this was part of the settlement? Not saying it is - just a possibility.

Tucker will find somewhere to grift and prostitute himself and make as much money as before. And that was the perfect word to describe what he's done as a career.

Tucker Carlson is a true red American traitor and should be hung up by his thumbs for a few days to think about the harm he’s done to US.

With Carlson, do we really know if he was fired or quit? Lemon says he's gotten fired so we know.

You can bet that at CNN, Kacie Hunt will move up the ladder.. I actually liked her on MSNBC..

At Fox, my guess is that Hannity and Bartriomo isn't far behind Carlson. Just a guess....

What we do know is that FOX News claimed they agreed to part ways. And I suppose that's possible. But if so that agreement came quickly and it all happened over the week-end. Carlson obviously had no idea on Friday at the time his show was taped that he wouldn't be back this week.

Thus far I would have to consider Tucker Carlson the Triple Crown winner of cable news. CNN let him go in 2005. He then went to MSNBC who canceled his show due to poor ratings in 2008. Now he's been axed at FOX News. That's the three biggest cable news networks on the air. I doubt there will be a huge market for his stud fees as would be the case with actual Triple Crown winners, but still....

I agree. I don't think it will matter much either. One would think after just letting them go off unleashed and that costing FOX News 787.5 million dollars the network may find it wise to reign in the leash somewhat. I mean they found out the cost of just letting them say anything. I guess we'll just have to wait and see on that one.

When I think about it, a settlement with FOX should have been the expected outcome all along.

Dominion is a privately-held, for-profit business. Backed by venture capitalists. The entire premise of their defamation lawsuit was based upon the loss of professional reputation and potential business, due to FOX's misrepresentation of their role in the 2020 election (Defamation). At the press conference following the settlement, a Dominion spokesface was asked why they didn't hold out for public statements of complicity/culpability. The Dominion Spokesface said words to this effect:

"A payout is the same as an apology."

I don't know if I agree with that approach, but I also understand two things, at the same time. This settlement:

1. exposed a major cable 'news' enterprise as an organization willing to distort/suppress actual factual news to maintain its market share/profit margin.
2. set a precedent of high stakes risk, in a media ecosphere that has previously run unchecked.

As an American consumer of news, I sent out my own personal alarm to this board about FOX more than a decade ago. Sometimes, I did it in the form of a snarky meme, but my motivation was always focused and on-point: "FOX News lies to its viewers. They are caught at it all the time, but their viewers don't care."

https://scontent-hou1-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...D0tdl7oj6yts4dcYVmUGmisQ&oe=644BF4AA

____________

Based upon the most recent events, the abrupt turn of Tucker Carlson's career arc, and the lack of info regarding the conditions of this settlement, my guess is this:

Rupert Murdoch (and his legal team) agreed to not only meet Dominion's monetary settlement, but also offer up another 'pound of flesh' from FOX News' inner thigh region to seal the deal, simply to get this smelly stuff out of the 24/7 news cycle, ASAP. It's never a good thing when a 'news agency' becomes the current subject of the nightly news cycle. Rupert measured the scales- and delivered Tucker Carlson to the sacrificial alter of 'Market Share.' When the time comes that your main asset becomes a major liability, that's when you cut bait. That is what we are seeing here- in Real Time. Dramatic as hell, no doubt- but predictable, as well. (Let's not forget how many national sponsors Rush Limbaugh lost from his syndicated radio show after he labeled Sandra Fluke a 'slut,' after she made headlines for speaking out in favor of insurance coverage for female contraceptives)

When I watch an UltraCapitalist shed his main cash cow in the interest of corporate survival, that speaks volumes to me.

Tucker Carlson made a large name for himself, over the last 6-8 years.
But Tucker Carlson wasn't the boss.
And now, he's not even an employee. after making all that money for His Boss.

We haven't seen the end of this.
Dominion v. FOX is the iceberg's tip. There will be more bloodletting/ P.R. purges to come. Dominion drafted the blueprint/ran the play. I expect Smartmatic to take the lateral toss, and run toward daylight/open field.

Clemdawg predix: 12-24 months from now, FOX News will look very different than the FOX News we see now.
After 25 years, they have played this tune out. It's now time to re-tool, and start a new tune (or at least a new melody, sung over the same old chords).

Agree with most of what you say, one of the issues I have is that other media outlets - MSNBC being chief amongst them - decided in 2008 with their hiring of Rachel Maddow that they had to fight fire with fire.

Now I know some folks want to say they are all as bad as each other. They don't like the MSNBC messaging, it is certainly all anti-Trump or anti-GOP. There was the Sandmann story and they were sued - so that was immediately the right wing counter to the Fox news here ... but while both are certainly bad - the cases are absolutely nothing alike and the word in your post that is so important is "willing". Fox willingly and continuously pumped out a narrative they KNEW was a lie.

With that said - my issue is that MSNBC needs to dial it back also. Your hope or expectation that Fox is going to look very different in the future, I don't know if I agree 100%. And even if they do - another media mogul will fill the void of hate and disinformation on the Right. But assuming Fox dials it down - MSNBC needs to do the same. More news, less opinion and spin. There's maybe one or two presenters I can watch - which I do when I am traveling for work, never at home - but then there's presenters I truly dislike and think their spin and skewed agenda is unwatchable/unlistenable. One of he worst at the moment is Reid Out.

I do agree that Smartmatic will run with this and carve out a new and bigger gut punch to Fox. Whether Hannity or some of other more extremes get removed ? idk. But when that happens - we'll once again incorrectly see the narrative that they are all the same and all as bad as each other. And while I disagree with that I do think everyone would benefit if all media dialled the partisan approach down.

I like your take on things. For all we know the firing of Tucker Carlson could have been a part of the settlement agreement with Dominion. But there is another angle I've considered quite possible. As you stated Dominion wrote the blueprint that Smartmatic surely plans to follow. Only Smartmatic is suing for one billion dollars more than dominion did. As we saw with Dominion and most such lawsuits, often times a settlement is reached.

Which begs to question, if FOX News went into this lawsuit with Smartmatic without showing they had held anyone accountable for the actions of defaming these voting machin corporations, how much weaker would their position be in settlement talks or even a judgement by a jury? By firing Carlson they can show they realize that "some of their employees" stepped over the line, they take it seriously and took actions to rectify the situation. I believe that firing Carlson may very well be what FOX News sees as a strong move to help lower the amount of a settlement or judgement in the Smartmatic case.

Uh oh. Will FOX News be the Bud Light of cable news by the extremists now?

Fox News Faces Boycott Over Tucker Carlson Exit: 'No Reason to Watch'

Many conservatives online are calling for a boycott of Fox News after Tucker Carlson, its most popular prime-time host, abruptly left the network on Monday.

"Fox News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways," the network announced in a surprise statement. "We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor."

The circumstances surrounding Carlson's exit remained unclear as of early on Tuesday, with the host saying he was informed of his departure from the network some 10 minutes before the official announcement. It comes just days after Fox News settled a defamation lawsuit, brought by Dominion Voting Systems, for $787.5 million.

The Associated Press and other media outlets said Carlson was ousted.

Carlson's exit ends his six-year reign as Fox News' rating star, after he was elevated to prime-time in 2017 after the inauguration of Donald Trump. But his supporters and allies are protesting his sudden departure from the network and calling for viewers to boycott Fox News.

"No reason to Watch Fox... Old Man Murdoch is Pure Evil and Pure Anti-MAGA...," former White House strategist and former Breitbart News executive chairman Steve Bannon posted on social media platform Gettr.

"I hope conservatives make the Budweiser boycott look like small potatoes compared to the boycott of FOX News. I just saw a tweet that was talking about favorites to replace @TuckerCarlson. Cut the crap. #BoycottFoxNews," wrote Twitter user Brian Topping, who has shared several tweets calling for a boycott of the network since the news of Carlson leaving.

Bud Light has recently faced a backlash from conservatives after the company offered a sponsorship deal to trans activist and influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

"Watching the Five today so you don't have to, then we boycott Fox News forever," wrote another Twitter user. "4 mins in—no mention of Tucker."

"Please understand this. Over 100 million of us can take down any company in a matter of weeks. Just by the power of our wallets. We have to let them know that we won't stand for their crap anymore. BOYCOTT FOX NEWS," tweeted another user.

Many others joined in the call to boycott the network, in tweets shared on the social media platform. Among those protesting Fox News' treatment of Carlson was Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who tweeted on Monday: "I stand with @TuckerCarlson. Wherever he goes."

In a later tweet, she wrote: "Cable news is about to be taught a powerful lesson after Fox News caved to the woke mob and fired Tucker Carlson. Americans no longer blindly watch the news like they did decades ago, they only watch the ones who have courage to tell the truth. Americans are about to quit watching."

Newsweek has contacted Fox News for comment by email.

Well, I am no strategist, but Tucker has been called the defacto head of the Republican Party, and that would be a plausible, but completely crazy way to sell the GOP on a new era for Republicans.

Burn down the country club.... well spare Mar-A-Largo and other Trump properties.
