Generic email today from Ohio Edison:

Rising energy prices and what they mean for you.

Dear Valued Customer,
Blah, blah, blah. Prices are going up June 1st but you have options.

First things first... these people are criminals... electric and gas. They send the email today, the calendar flips over the weekend, and generally you have to opt out of a plan a month in advance.

So here's what will happen... I'll opt out on Monday and enroll in a new plan. Opt out takes 30 days, soooo that will run into the next billing period, so I'll be stuck with the new rate for June. No big deal right??

Google is your friend:
Quote
The new FirstEnergy base price will be 10.2 cents per kilowatt-hour, up 93% from the current rate of 5.3 cents per kilowatt-hour. Customers of FirstEnergy subsidiaries, such as Ohio Edison and the Illuminating Company, will experience this increase from June 2023 to May 2024 if they are on the standard service offer.

Ahhh, so when you say "going up" you mean DOUBLE?!

Anyway, at the very least... see if you're affected and then go here to shop...

BETTER YET: See if your community, municipality, city or county is involved in a Energy Aggregation Program. Just google and an answer should arrive. Mine is 4.53 cents/kWh fixed through March 2025.

5.3 was pretty low.

We get our power through TVA and it holds at something like 6.8cents.

How is my community aggregate offering it at 4.53 since March 2022? And a three year contract?

5.3 may be low... raising your rates 93% on one month's notice is inexcusable.

Is it a fixed rate or variable rate?

I go through IGS Energy and am paying 9.29 cents per kWh, fixed rate. I used to pay a lot lower (I forgot what it was), but the person I spoke to on the phone said the rates were going up, so...... ick.

That over-inflated Ohio Edison rate is variable. In other words -- higher than a mountain during the summer when you're using air conditioning, competitive when usage is low.

My community aggregate is fixed at 4.53 through March 2025.

Yea, electric bills aren’t fun here either.

Hawaii is the U.S. state with the highest household electricity price. In September 2022, the average retail price of electricity for Hawaiian residences amounted to roughly 45 U.S. cents per kilowatt-hour.

Thankfully for me, I have a two bedroom condo. So it’s still expensive, but not like some of my friends that have a family and a house.

I was in Thailand for a little over a month in feb-mar. I shut off everything, pulled plugs, except my refrigerator. I was excited/interested to see how low my electric bill would be. My bill was still 120 with everything off rofl

Never said it wasn't. On the other side, it might be justified.
