U-Haul driver faces multiple charges after crashing into security barrier near White House in Lafayette Square, police say

A man crashed a U-Haul truck into a security barrier near the White House on Monday night in what authorities are investigating as a potentially intentional incident.

Sai Varshith Kandula, 19, of Chesterfield, Missouri, is in custody and facing multiple charges including threatening to kill or harm a president, vice president or family member, US Park Police said. The Secret Service said there were no injuries to any agency or White House personnel.

The truck, which carried a Nazi flag among other items, crashed into security barriers on the north side of Lafayette Square at 16th Street just before 10 p.m. ET, the US Secret Service said. A preliminary investigation revealed the driver may have intentionally struck the barrier, the agency later said.

Video taken by a witness showed the 26-foot moving truck stopped on the sidewalk near Lafayette Square before the driver accelerates and crashes into a set of security bollards that ring the White House complex to prevent unauthorized vehicular traffic.

After the crash, the truck was searched by bomb technicians and no explosives or incendiary devices were found, a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation told CNN.

Video from CNN affiliate WUSA shows a remotely operated police robot approaching the rear of the truck and lifting the cargo door, followed by an FBI bomb technician who inspected the vehicle. A Park Police officer was later seen taking inventory of the U-Haul truck, packing up several pieces of evidence. Among the items that appear to be from the truck are a Nazi flag, a black backpack and a roll of duct tape. The cargo area of the moving truck appeared empty.

Law enforcement sources told CNN that Kandula made threatening comments regarding the White House at the scene. He also is facing charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, destruction of federal property and trespassing, Park Police said.

The incident prompted road closures as authorities investigated the crash, and the nearby Hay-Adams hotel was evacuated at the request of the Secret Service, a hotel employee told CNN. The hotel guests and employees were allowed back in when police deemed it safe a short time later.

The FBI’s National Capital Response Squad is assisting Park Police and the Secret Service in the investigation.

I'm not attempting to pass judgement here, but when looking at this guys name and combining that with the fact he was possessing a Nazi flag, I'm not at all sure he knows how any of that works.

Box truck driver said he wanted to ‘seize power,’ ‘kill the president’: court records

A Missouri man who crashed a rented U-Haul truck into security barriers near the White House on Monday told federal agents his goal was to “seize power” and “kill the president,” according to court records.

Sai Varshith Kandula, 19, crashed the rented truck into security barriers around Lafayette Square in front of the White House late Monday, according to a statement of facts from a Secret Service agent, shared by the Department of Justice. Kandula exited the vehicle and took out a red-and-white flag with a Nazi swastika in the center before officers intervened, authorities said.

According to the filing, Kandula told agents that his goal was to “get to the White House, seize power, and be put in charge of the nation” and that he would “kill the President if that’s what I have to do and would hurt anyone that would stand in my way.”

The Chesterfield, Mo., man allegedly said he’d been planning his actions for six months and told agents that he thought they had been successful, saying, “whether I got into the White House or not, my message was received.” He clarified that his message was intended for organizations such as the Secret Service, according to the filing, which did not share details about what exactly the message was.

Kandula also said he purchased the swastika flag online because “Nazi’s have a great history” and lauded Adolf Hitler, saying he admires the “authoritarian nature, eugenics, and … one world order” of Nazis, according to the document.

The U-Haul crash damaged the security barriers, but no explosives or weapons were found with Kandula and no injuries were reported, authorities said.

Kandula had rented the truck in Virginia when he arrived at Dulles International Airport, just outside of D.C., on a one-way ticket, according to federal records.

U.S. Park Police said Tuesday the man was arrested on charges including threatening to kill, kidnap or inflict harm on a president, vice president or member of their family; assault with a dangerous weapon; reckless driving; destruction of federal property; and trespassing.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday that President Biden had been briefed on the incident. “He’s relieved that no one was injured last night and grateful to the agents and the law enforcement officer who responded so quickly,” she said.
