My Godfather was a heavyweight fighter.
The first sport I was introduced to was boxing. My father was into boxing and had friends who were fighters. I was just a kid in the 50's. We had an old black and white tv. Wednesday night was Gillette Cavalcade of Sports fight night. Often my father and his buddies would watch those boxing matches. I would sit there around age 10 or so and suck it all in. I would get schooled in boxing.
I remained a fan and one of my closest friends became a boxing judge. I never missed big championship bouts. I have autographs of Ali, Duran and Larry Holmes.
I despise UFC. It makes me sick just seeing the highlights of matches on Sports Center.
Knocking a guy down and then pounding the guy on the floor until he is unconscious. Guys with cauliflower ears and thick skulls just beating the crap out of each other.
Boxing is violent. There was talk of banning the sport. UFC makes boxing look tame by comparison. I doubt that those young men who are in the "sport" live out their days with much brain left.
People watch it. It makes money.
It will not get money from me.
