Maybe there are a few who get into this series.

Myself, it is by far my favorite tv show.

It is not BS. It requires great skill. Adaptable strategy. The right mind set. And the ability to persevere hardship.

The show has gained a huge international audience.

The season's first episode aired Thursday night.

There was a preface "Before the Drop" that provided a good background of how the show is set up and this seasons participants.

It is to early to really tell much. Lee the indigenous Alaskan will be hard to beat. He has lived this way most of his life. He has knowledge plus his mental approach will be an asset.

One of the very few shows on tv that I actually look forward to watching.

I don't know my friend. If they are being taped, they aren't alone.

You are alone when bitten by a copper head and there is no medivac chopper to pull you out.

That's alone.

Something tells me that if a Griz wanders in to camp, it isn't just the contestant and their machete to scare it off.

I guess it wouldn't make for good viewing if nobody actually survived.

Just saying.

Have you watched the show before?

Watch the "Before the Drop." It goes over all of the background. How the people are trained to film themselves. The camera equipment each person has to be trained on. How the site is selected.

They do have a Sat phone.

However, nature can be unforgiving. There is risk involved.

There is a lot you can look into about the show from the website.

I think if was fake that it would not have gained the following it has.

yes, I have seen it, or others like it.

I am not putting down the survival skills displayed. Just saying they aren't alone. Alone is risking death. Nobody is going to die on camera.

But along those lines....if I had to pick someone to help and teach me how to survive....the Army taught me a good deal so I do have some skills, I would pick a Cajun Swamper. They know how to survive.

Yes, they are actually Alone. It's unlike any other survival show on TV. If it weren't I wouldn't bother watching it. A medical team checks in on them in preset intervals and they do have a satellite phone for emergencies. But otherwise they are alone.

Ok....you agree they aren't alone. Just saying.

How do they get all the film? 9000 fixed cameras? If people are watching your every step, are you really alone?

I like the show and shows like it, but it's not like they dump them all and come back 3 months later to see if they are still alive.

I agree with bonefish that you should watch "Before the Drop". It explains all of that to you. About the batteries, about all of the camera equipment each contestant is given including still cameras that must learn to use before being dropped in their locations.

Do you think these shows still use film? A lot of shows these days are recorded digitally.

I'm not the one that questioned...........

So yes, it appeared those points needed to be addressed.

I was talking about the use of the term film. I believe I also used the word tape at one point. Both would be incorrect, but you knew what i was talking about.

No, I actually didn't. You can put enough memory cards to hold that footage in a small container. So giving it to them in advance would be quite simple. And then you brought up something about "9000 fixed cameras" which simply don't exist. So when reading it I had no idea what the hell you were talking about actually.

ALL of that is explained in that "Before the drop" episode. And the link bonefish supplied also helps answer some of those questions. I think you were just trying too hard to make points that simply aren't there to make.

I love the show.
Can’t believe that dude already lost his quiver of arrows. Looks like he’ll need to get a grouse (feathers) and make some new arrows. A dumb mistake, but it’s early enough in the game to recover if he has the needed skills.

And yes Peen, they are alone. I mean technically they have a satellite phone so… you’re correct, they aren’t TRULY alone. That said, if a bear mauls them in their camp and they can’t get to their phone… yikes. Curtains.

When you are alone in a remote place. You are not in control.

If you stumble into a bad situation. The sat phone and their emergency response team will not be on time.

You fall through bad ice on a lake. You may die. You get between a she-bear and her cubs. You might die.

There are many dangers.

The sat phone can provide a rescue if you get injured.

But the show is honest. These people will face a serious challenge. They need skill. To be the last person remaining will be extremely hard.

The show is very interesting because you get to witness their plans and see what works or does not.

When I watched the preface "Before the Drop." I was looking for weakness.

Mikey the guy from Georgia stuck out a little bit. He has survival skills but they are for Georgia. I admire what he is trying to accomplish for son with autism. However, he has no experience in this type of climate. That is a bad disadvantage.

Being cold in places like Saskatchewan is not like being cold in Georgia. The wind is a real enemy.

I once lived in Green River, Wy. Wy has a high rate of suicide. They say it is because of the wind. It is brutal. It beats you down.

It is cold in Georgia when it gets to 25. That is balmy in that part of Canada. 30 to 70 degrees below zero with winds above 50 mph. Is killing weather.

If the shelters they are building can not hold the heat. No chance to survive.

I don't see Mikey making it to far. He does not have the experience and stamina to handle what he would face.

Lee the Alaskan and the guy from Ontario have much better experience for this challenge.

Thought Mikey was done last night.

Taz how could he let that teepee catch on fire and destroy that big beautiful fish

Dont remember their names, but those two woman that almost finished their shelters are gonna warm if they finish it off right, but they are already not eating, that will their downfall

1. Lee
2. James
3. Melanie
4. Jodie

My early top 4.

Have not yet seen enough of each person yet.

But Lee is the best equipped because living in this kind of environment is his way of life. That is a huge advantage.

I love Alone. It is a fascinating show. It requires many skills and not just survival skills.

I have watched every season of Alone. You learn from watching what it really takes.

I can't remember the guys name. But the guy who won one season was the only guy who really stepped away from the norm.

He was the guy who basically starved and didn't even start fires. His strategy was don't waste calories securing wood.

That was odd. All the other winners showed what the right stuff is to win.

I think you're referring to Juan Pablo Quiñonez from season 9. Not only didn't he procure food, he drank water straight from the river without boiling or purifying it in any way. An odd strategy to be sure but one that nobody can say wasn't effective. He beat out Karie Lee Knoke as the other finalist in season 9.

Like yourself it's far too early to make any predictions about this season but that Georgia boy sure seems to be out of his element thus far.

Juan was a character.

When I was in Alaska near lake Iliamna. We drank water straight from the ground but we could see where it came out of the ground. Best water I have ever drank.

People living on the lake drank water from the lake. In that country you most likely are alright drinking water as long as the water is moving well.

It is beaver still water that will give you giardia. That is a parasite that will get you real sick.

Still way to early. I am paying close attention to their shelters.

The gal from the two seasons ago I believe that built the half dug out/half teepee. That was a great shelter.

This is a good place to have this season. There should be some opportunity for big game.

My grandson is ten and is taking archery lessons this week. I had a bear bow at his age. A 36 lb. panda bear bow. It was a fiberglass recurve bow. My dad bought it for me because I begged him and got my grades up. I was a deadly shot with that bow. I can still shoot a bow. I took some shots with my grandson.

I got turned on to bow hunting when I saw Fred Bear shoot a grizzly with Curt Gowdy narrating on Wide World of Sports. I quit hunting. I didn't like taking life. Hell, I rarely kill fish when i fish.

We have some Native American heritage in my family. We found out the hard way the price you pay for using a bow instead of a gun. Thus I've never been a bow hunter. naughtydevil

Alone is such a good show. It taps into the basics of what humans are made of.

This week it revealed the weakness of aging. Lee and Ann could not handle the lack of food. When that protein is not coming in and the energy keeps leaving. An older body can not handle it. You become depleted and do not have the stamina to do what needs to be done.

It was surprising that Lee tapped. But when he did. It was understandable.

I traveled alone in Guatemala in my mid 20's. Carrying a backpack and living in a tent for six months. I got amebic dysentery and hepatitis. I tuned into a toothpick. I recovered but it was rough. I became so weak. But when you are young. Your body recovers.

When you get old. It does not.

While I do think aging was a factor, they were also the skinniest contestants on the show. They had no fat build up stored with which to rely on. It seems the smartest contestants gain quite a bit of weight before going on the show so they have some fat stored up to help combat the hunger and have reserves with which to rely on. They did not. I think that may have been as big, if not a bigger factor than their age.

It would have been cool to see someone from the board on the show but it's very understandable why you felt the need to decline under those circumstances. It will be interesting to see who does and who doesn't adapt to the change in the weather this season.

Is tonight the finale? There’s a new alone that starts next Thursday, that’s why I ask.
