It doesn't seem like increasing the deficit is restricted by party. According to data pulled from the US treasury department (and posted here), Obama increased the national debt by 64.4% while Trump increased it by 33.1%. The raw numbers are closer with Obama's ~$7.6T to Trump's ~$6.7T. It was somewhat interesting to note that OCD's Biden comparison of FDR increased the national debt by almost 800%. Biden was sitting at 8.8%, but this data is over a year old and it likely has and will continue to go up.

Trying to blame one individual or side for an ongoing problem doesn't seem like a winning proposition. On the other hand, when talking about who is currently doing it specifically, who else can you point at but the people sitting in the halls of power at the moment?

BTW- If you're going to make the point that both trump and Obama had nearly the same increase in the deficit, I think it's quite pertinent to include the fact that Obama served as president for eight years while trump was only in office for four years.

As far as the actual numbers, who knows what to believe. The media seems to have fancy math tricks depending on the agenda they're pushing. I was studying Bull Dog's link a couple days ago, and verified many of those numbers for the past few presidents through other sources. That site also makes a very important point before the chart -- the president has very little control of "his debt" during his first year as spending is the result of policy from his predecessor.

I understand how one could consider that the Newsweek link may be questionable. However Michael Pompeo served as trump's director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from 2017 to 2018 and as the 70th United States secretary of state from 2018 to 2021. So to me that's a pretty hard pill to swallow in terms of questioning the source.

But you see, that's the thing, I don't think there is some huge chasm here. We all know that both parties increase the debt and are in no way fiscally conservative. yet you still see BS like this posted...


When sensible people can come at least very close to a consensus that the national deficit was created and is continued by both parties, you always get someone who comes along and slings $#!+ agaiinst the wall hoping some of it will stick. We can get into specific amounts and reasons why it happened, but what I think few of us can do is try to lay the blame on either single party for the mess we're in.

It was based on a lack of fiscal irresponsibility over the past 20 years which lays squarely on the shoulders of both democratic and republican administrations. I'm on social security. Hopefully you won't help vote yourself out of getting it when you reach the age to qualify for it. And actually inflation is at it's lowest point in two years. It certainly needs to get better but it's been a process back in the right direction.

And actually your response is somewhat confusing. So you don't think inflation hurts people on fixed incomes? Wouldn't it seem logical to deduce that those on a fixed income would be even more impacted by inflation? 1. Problem arises

3. Blame other side

I agree with the earlier, albeit short discussions that it comes down to politicians actually doing the right thing and taking the hard steps now vs kicking the can. The problem is that the majority of Americans buy into blaming the other side and remaining silent when it appears “their own side” is at fault. I don’t think it’ll ever happen, but I think we need to be vocal at holding our very own political representatives accountable and not accepting deflection as an answer. I don’t think it’ll get to that point though, sadly. I would also add that I think we need to resist the urge to defend those “on our own side.” I used to be guilty of that. When it comes down to it, none of these people are heroes and they all need to be held accountable.

I would also agree with the observation that the problem has existed on both sides of the aisle over the past 20 years, especially. I would further that point by saying it’s a problem 40 years in the making with massive acceleration over the past 20.
