I tend to be more politically correct than most on here. I do not usually start threads of this nature but this just bothers me to no end.
Quote: Atlanta Falcon's owner Arthur Blank was a guest on Monday Night Football December 10. He was asked about former Atlanta Falcons quarterback and convicted animal abuser Michael Vick's future with the team. This is what he said: "There's a lot of roadblocks to Michael coming back and even playing in the National Football League, Tony. Let's assume he's out for three seasons, 07, 08 and 09. If he doesn't watch himself and eats a lot of fried chicken and fries in prison, comes out 215 pounds he's not going to be the same athlete he was."
I didn't include the authur's comments, nor did I even read them. I have heard about this comment on TV and heard people calling his comment unfortunete to racist. I for the life of me can't figure out how anyone sees this comment in such a way.
I'm sick and tired of this kind of crap. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't fried chicken and fries popular southern foods? Aren't they very fatty and unhealthy?
Aurthur Blank treated Vick like a son but people are so willing to type cast him over his statement. Can you hear it in his voice?
Nothing racist about it in my eyes. Why is it everytime someone mentions chicken and black people it turns into a racial battle? I personally love fried chicken, watermelon but that doesn't make me black...IDK why people are getting all riled up.
Maybe he actually knows Vick ...... and might even know what kind of food he likes. Plus, I don't think that fries are a predominently "black" food item.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.

True, didn't think about that possibility.
I'd ask him to explain himself and then go from there. As of now, I say it's really a non-story.
“...Iguodala to Curry, back to Iguodala, up for the layup! Oh! Blocked by James! LeBron James with the rejection!”
One other thing that just kills me is this .......
The person mentioned is a convicted felon, doing federal prison time. So ...... somehow someone makes some innocent statement ..... which some could take a a statement of some degree of support ...... and the convicted felon is somehow a victim.
Personally ... if it were me ... I'd have said something along the lines of "Vick is a piece of crap ... in fact is worse than a really runny piece of crap ...... and I hope nothing less that some 400 lb guy makes him his prison bitch. That might give him some idea of what he put the animals he tortured and killed through."
But that's just me ........

I have to say that as soon as I heard him say that, I thought to myself "Man, people are going to be all over him for that."
I don't think it was a racist comment in the least, probably just saying the first thing that came to his mind. But, I'm not surprised at people's reactions saying it was racist.
Also, I like the people who are joking on here about liking certain types of foods, and does that make them black? I think, personally, saying something like that is racist, because, tacitly, you're saying that "all black people" like those things.
I'm not saying any of you are racists or anything. But, just the context of it makes it seem that way to me, at least. But, that's JMHO, and I'm certainly not accusing anyone of anything. I just see it akin to saying "I love discrimination and keeping down minorities, therefore I must be white" due to the fact that that's a stereotype of white people (weak, I know, but just to show a point).

Oh B.S. What a load of crap you just typed. We are all commenting on the "stereotype" that is WIDELY been used over the years and making fun of it. Get off your high horse and pay attention. People like you are EXACTLY who we are making fun of.
I never understood that stereotype anyway. A lot of black people like fried chicken and watermelon and whatever else you want to lump into that group, but so do a lot of white people and other races as well. Anymore people in general like controversy and construed racial comments are very controversial so a lot of people make bigger deals out of stuff than needed. Is there still racism in the country? Sure there is, but not every comment made should have to be examined in order find out if there were racial motivations behind them because 95% of the time it just isn't the case.
Anything to sell a paper . No news ?? Well then make some news happen darn it . As if ol Art hadn't been through enough of a crap storm let's subtly accuse him of being a racist . He was stupid though because the correct response would have been " I wish the best for Mike Vick and I hope everything turns out o.k. for him and his family .He was convicted of a crime and is now paying for his debt to society. As to whether or not he plays football again that is something you will have to ask him ".
No, not all black people eat fried chicken, no not all black people eat watermelon.
I don't think too much of what he said, I think words just kind of jumped out of his mouth. If he had time to think about it, he probably wouldn't have said it.
But if none of you have ever been on the receiving end of that stereotype, then don't judge, lest ye be judged.

Oh yeah, I've NEVER been on the receiving end of a stereotype. Let me tell you something pal, no group of people gets made fun of more on boards like this than the one I belong to. You are crying to the wrong person.
Nah, I don't know more than anyone on here. I was just pointing out that I read people's comments a different way than you did. You can get as fired up as you want about it and lob generalizations my way, but the fact of the matter is I was stating my opinion, same as you stated yours. I know that's difficult to understand, but it happens at times.
Tell that too, Pryor, Foxx, Murphy, Chappelle etc... Most of these guys help keep the stereotype alive. see it's ok for a african american to make fun of themselves and whites, but if a white makes a comment he's a racist. I don't get this thought process at all.
I think this thread is going totaly the wrong way! I understand what both side's are saying , But I dont think this is the way PD saw this thread going....jmho

And you probably never will...difference is,all those guys you mentioned are comedians, not NFL owners or whatever other professional.
Carlos Mencia makes PLENTY of racially stereotyped jokes about blacks...so does that fat white comedian (I can't think of his name)...noone has said anything to the contrary about them, and they won't...they're comedians...they're supposed to make fun of thngs.

I understand that the stereotype is the problem, what I don't understand is why people let it become a problem. Like I said, racism is obviously still an issue in some cases, but people are offended way too easily today with issues they shouldn't be. The stereotype is wrong obviously, but not every person should be put on trial for every comment made that can be percieved as racially motivated.

Thats sort of my point I thought the people in this thread were clearly joking, thats why I used comedians as my example. I understand the problems with stereotyping, I just didn't think it was being done purposely in this thread.
Quote: If he had time to think about it, he probably wouldn't have said it.
Why should he even worry about the food types he mentions? What's his "checklist" during this time of needed thought? Is he supposed to go through every food group linked to every stereotype and then come up with olives and fruitcake? (I hope olives and fruitcake aren't stereotyping anyone here) WHAT IF someone isn't a racist and doesn't even consider the stereotypes in their conversation and just mention high fat content foods? IT COULD HAPPEN.

and as such, you have a right to get mad when those stereotypes are used...and I wouldn't blame you if you did.
But I've NEVER said you haven't been on the receiving end of "A" stereotype, just not that one. Secondly, I don't know you like that so I'm assuming you mean the gay/lesbian thing right? You all are very much picked with, just as much as any racial group. Difference is, you can choose to divulge your sexual preference, my race speaks for itself.
Next time somebody says that something is "gay", if you choose to get mad about it...I would applaud you for it, if you choose not to, hey, maybe it's not worth the fight to you...but that's your choice

Most people have been on the receiving end of a stereotype ... it's just most people don't get all offended by it. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to stuffing my face with meat and potatoes.

I'm not saying he should've had to, but if he had a written statement, I'm sure he might have thought that statement could fire up a storm...look at Fuzzy Zoeller.
One thing that you all need to understand, is just cause it doesn't offend YOU, does NOT mean someone else doesn't have the right to be offended.
Personally, I think it's much to do about nothing, but some people don't feel that way, and they're WELL within their right to do so.

If you CHOOSE not to be offended by a stereotype, that's your choice...but that stereotype will live on if people just let it slide.
It's apparant that some black people don't like the fried chicken stereotype. And they don't have to!

Well I guess? To each his/her own. Everyone has his/her own opinion....Just some choose to overlook things, and go on with life. If you choose to let think's bother you , then it will be a hard life.

Actually this is what I expected. I just had to get this off my chest.
Arthur Blank was referring to fatty, unhealthy food, period. Fried chicken and french fries are a staple of southern food.
This is not the same as the joke made about Tiger Woods and fried chicken and greens. He was simply talking about Vick eating food that is bad for him while he was in prision.
Maybe we shouldn't even mention he is in prision. Black men in prision is also considered a stereotype.
