Private jet crash in Russia kills 10. Wagner chief Prigozhin was on passenger list

MOSCOW (AP) — A private jet crashed in Russia on Wednesday, killing all 10 people aboard, emergency officials said. Mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was on the passenger list, but it wasn't immediately clear if he was on board.

Prigozhin’s fate has been the subject of intense speculation ever since he mounted a short-lived mutiny against Russia’s military leadership in late June. The Kremlin said the founder of the Wagner private military company, which fought alongside Russia’s regular army in Ukraine, would be exiled to Belarus.

But the mercenary chief has since reportedly popped up in Russia, leading to further questions about his future.

A plane carrying three pilots and seven passengers that was en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg went down more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of the capital, according to officials cited by Russia’s state news agency Tass. It was not clear if Prigozhin was among those on board, though Russia’s civilian aviation regulator, Rosaviatsia, said he was on the manifest.

Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing emergency officials, that eight bodies were found at the site of the crash.

Flight tracking data reviewed by The Associated Press showed a private jet registered to Wagner that Prigozhin had used previously took off from Moscow on Wednesday evening and its transponder signal disappeared minutes later.

The signal was lost in a rural region with no nearby airfields where the jet could have landed safely.

In an image posted by a pro-Wagner social media account showing burning wreckage, a partial tail number matching a private jet belonging to the company could be seen. The color and placement of the number on the engine of the crashed plane matches prior photos of the Wagner jet examined by The AP.

This week, Prigozhin posted his first recruitment video since the mutiny, saying that Wagner is conducting reconnaissance and search activities, and “making Russia even greater on all continents, and Africa even more free.”

Also this week, Russian media reported, citing anonymous sources, that a top Russian general linked to Prigozhin — Gen. Sergei Surovikin — was dismissed from his position of the commander of Russia's air force. Surovikin, who at one point led Russia's operation in Ukraine, hasn't been seen in public since the mutiny, when he recorded a video address urging Prigozhin's forces to pull back.

As the news about the crash was breaking, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke at an event commemorating the Battle of Kursk, hailing the heroes of Russia's “the special military operation” in Ukraine.

It wasn't a matter of whether but when.

I'm skeptical. It could be the case, but I think there needs to be more confirmation. High profile figures the likes of Prigozhin in Russia often have other people go by the same name when it comes to travel plans in order to avoid tracking.

Again, not saying it didn't happen, but I'm in more of a wait and see mode. Agree that there is definitely a bullseye on his back after what happened a couple months ago.

Not sure anyone could convince me that Putin didn't have a hand in this.

On topic: dude didn't fall from grace. He fell from being shot down. IF he was on the plane. Different tactic for putin, no doubt. Couldn't "fall out of a window" up in the plane.

Fun Fact: Prigozhin was charged with defrauding the US over the 2016 Russian collusion. This is the same charge Trump earned for himself in 2020, among many others.

Least surprising news of the day.

Planes in distress don't generally drop like stones from the sky.
I suspect that there was a small bomb on board.
If this plane had been shot down, US surveillance would have detected it, and word/vid would probably have been already leaked.

I’m sure it was an unfortunate accident that hopefully others will learn from in the future.

I don’t really care either way, but the rumor mills are going full steam. I’ve heard Putin took him out. The head of the military did it without Putin’s consent. He faked his death to keep Putin from killing him, used a body double. And finally, it’s all fake, Putin has him working on a top secret plan to win in Ukraine. Oh, and I heard Trump knew nothing about it ahead of time.

Putin bots are dancing everywhere. Their witch is dead. I’ll never understand the Russian psyche. How a country in its entirety can bow down to a ruthless murderer accepting it all without overthrowing the thug with all their combined strength. Pffft Russians are weak.

We never hear about the innocent victims involved. Like the pilots and crew and the women and children left behind. Putin is a sick man. Not even half human. Russia must take him out. It’s on them.

Well, when you look at their track record...

- Bolshevik revolution where they murdered the entire royal family
- Dawn of communism in its worst form
- Massive famine in the early 30's due to collectivization
- The Great Purge
- Stalin taking power and being responsible for the deaths of roughly 20 million people
- Kruschev going ape-poop banging his shoe on the table like a lunatic
- Brezhnev igniting rampant corruption that still goes on there today

They had about two-ish decades in there with one guy who THEY now regard as ineffective and one guy who wandered around drunk trying to hail a cab in DC to go look for a pizza, with a lot of mob rule going on at home, before they just said, screw it, let's go back to having a ruthless arse take us over again. A guy who embodies the bad traits of all of the leaders since 1917.

Everyone alive there only knows the Russian style ruthlessness and corruption. It's a whole different paradigm, albeit very sick like you mentioned.
