Yeah...it might be a little bit difficult to re-sign Suggs with that kind of cap room.

What the hell is Baltimore, Atlanta, Carolina and St. Louis going to do? They are horrible and they have basically no cap room at all.
Baltimore is going down the tube fast and I love it.

How does a team even get $20 million over the cap? They need to buy some lottery tickets and start praying.

don't forget to mention they only have 45 players under contract and they are 20 mill over.... They are going to have to sign every 7th round pick that gets cut and sign for next next 2-3 years to clean house on dead cap space. I mean how much dead weight can they possibly have? 40 million?
the other honorable mention goes to carolina with 35 players signed and only 6 mill to sign the other 18 players needed and allocate money to the rookie cap.
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

I thought reports at the beginning of the year stated we'd have the most cap room of anybody.
Was I just dreaming that or did something happen to change it?
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

We wil actually have 8 mill more than what is listed because of a slick move Svage pulled on Pontbriands contract. He gave Ryan an incentive in his deal that was unreachable. We had room for it on last years slary cap but unpaid incentives are credited to your next years cap. We will add more quality players in FA next year FO SHO. My wish list is Another WR to compliment Braylon, A qulaity DL, and a upgrade at ILB . Here is a link to the story on Pontbriands contract Quote:

Good find king, very interesting stuff. Was nice to hear that Pontbriand will be the highest paid long snapper in the league. He deserves it. Can we get this guy to the pro-bowl already!!! Great move be the FO on maneuvering a salary cap credit. An extra 10 million can go a LONG way, especially when we should be a very attractive FA destination.

I am by no stretch a salary cap guru but the Pontibrand deal is pretty slick, if they let the Browns get by with it. I have been pretty upset to see that the Browns have like 25 Mill in unused cap space and was hoping, and still do hope that they work some deals with our current players before the end of the season. With available cap space you can cut a deal use up the space up until the final game after that you move into the next season. Most teams back load contracts and take hits for players that don't even play for the team anymore for years in some instances after the player is no longer on the roster. My theory is though in the case of the Browns front load the contract eat up the space you currently have and save space later on. I am trilled to see they at least did something to try to free up future cap space. Now the big question is, will they be allowed to do it. That part sounds a bit dicey to me, but we will see. At least they did something, I was affraid they wouldn't...

Yes King, I read this in the Plain Dealer a short while back,, talk to me about how sweet a move this was by Savage.. Cool huh? So it looks as if we have 38 Million to play with... Can you say Improved Defense.. This could get pretty sweet in a hurry.. Not that I particularly want to see him gone, but if we do Tender DA and end up getting a 1st and 3rd for him,, think of what can be done with that much CAP space and the extra picks,,, I don't want to sound Capraesk but,, It's a wonderful life!

No they won't. His salary will drop off the board for them but any pro-rated amount of signing bonus money still goes towards their cap. (at least under the current rules)
As far as our cap room goes, we have quite a few unanswered questions that will affect our cap space a good bit:
Derek Anderson. Tender offer/long term deal?
Jamal Lewis. Re-sign him? Go with a younger back?
McGinest. Due to earn 2.9 mill in 2008....if released his bonus money dead hit on the cap would result in about a 1 mill savings for us. Is it worth a roster spot to keep his veteran presence on the field/in the locker room?
Roye. Scheduled to earn 3 mill in 2008, but can't stay on the field.
We may yet make some moves before the end of this 2007 season that will help us out as well......it is ever-changing.

another thing that will change how much money we get is Pro Bowl bonuses and whatever Play-Offs incentives our guys have in their deals. So we're gaining $8M from Pontbriand (pretty sneaky Phil & Trip ), but we'll likely pay almost all of that back out.... especially after we win that game the first week of February

Man I can't see Fisher being dumb enuff to let Haynesworth hit the market...He's the PRIZE jewel...
Tommy Kelly would be a superb consolation prize tho...
Love to see us pick on one of Suggs OLB or Dansby ILB...
I go Dansby all day long while others outbid each other for Suggs...Then go get an undersized (Tapp/Dumervil) DE day one of the draft to move outside...And another DL day one of the draft for the rotation to replace Roye...Ya' seein' the significance Anderson might bring???...lol...

Then we can go for a Turner depending on Lewis and/or a Berrian to match up with Brey...

Thats kind of the point of what they did with Pontbriand. Those incentives are already applied to the cap this year. If they achieve the bonus, cool, but it is already figured in this years cap. If they dont achieve those incentives and bonuses they get a credit on next years cap.

I saw that last week.
I still question the 30% figure.
You punt about as much as you receive punts.
You kick PATs and fieldgoal tries about as much as you kick-off.
And, the term snaps is a bit worrisome......he snaps all of our special team "snaps".

Let's see. He's on the field for FGs and punts. Then for special teams there's kickoffs, kickoff returns, and punt returns. 30% seems about right.

I guess. Seems PAT's and fieldgoals would cover the kickoffs other than the kick to start a game or after the half. Missed fieldgoals would cover some of the 16 plays....not sure how many. Maybe we are receiving many more punts than we kick....just seems like those numbers would balance out close to 50/50. Guess not. Then that leads to the question of how realistic the bonus money really is....somewhere I read the NFL and league have to feel the bonus money is attached to a bonus that is realistic...if a ST play is a non snap play, how realistic is it the guy would be in there??? If nominated for President, you get a $10mill bonus.

Well I think they meant plays but even so he isn't on the field when the other team " snaps the ball. So assuming equal amounts of punts or FGs by the other team and by us , it is 50 % at best. Either way he will never meet 90 %that the incentive requires.

web page BENTLEY, BROWNS MOVE TOWARD DIVORCEMultiple league sources tell us that the Browns and center LeCharles Bentley have torn up the balance of his big-money 2006 contract and replaced it with a one-year deal that expires after the 2008 season. Under the new contract, Bentley is slated to earn a base salary of $605,000 in 2008, the minimum for his position. If he plays roughly half of the season, he picks up another $1 million. After roughly 12 games, he gets another $1 million. After roughly 14 games, he gets another $1 million. The move was intended to reduce the team's financial risk in the event that Bentley were cleared to play, on the opening-day roster (and thus entitled to what would have been $4 million in base pay), and then injured or ineffective early in the season. But to get Bentley to accept the lower base amount for 2008, the team had to agree to let Bentley become an unrestricted free agent after the season. And because the deal was shortened, all of the acceleration from Bentley's signing bonus hit the salary cap in 2007, less the amount that will apply to the Browns' cap in 2008. The maneuver allows the Browns to get most of Bentley's contract off of the books in 2007, and the rest of it next year.

Understanding that context is the reason I haven't gone to check the number of punts by us v the number of punts we forced.

Good move.
Bentley has been a bottomless money pit from day 1....we had to do something.
This still leaves open the possibility of signing him to another deal after next season if he comes back and plays well enough to earn a job.

Another genius move to apply some of the salary cap room we have left this year applied to next years cap. Wow can you imagine what this OL would be like if the Bentley injury never happened? Not knock against Fraley because he has done a great job. Though it gets me thinking, without the Bentley injury maybe we win more games and don't get the opportunity to draft JT.

yeah, even if bents doesn't come back we have tuck and mckinney to fill in. excess talent at the guard position? if you told me that last year i would of laughed my butt off kinda sucks, if he can't play. I do hope we get to see him play next year, I'm sort of a sucker for these home coming stories, like Joe J.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

Haynesworth is the guy that could make this entire D MUCH better. Better DL play means better LB, CB and S play.
However, it wouldn't surprise me if Savage didn't pursue him too heavily due to any perceived character issues (remember him stomping on the head of helmet-less Gurode and suspension last year?). Just a thought.

I think Al gained a little respect around the league with the way he owned that incident last year. He was a man about it and was really upset with the way he acted. I remember reading about him contacting Gurode and talking with him.....Something of that nautre.
The problem is not character as much as Tenn would be nuts to let him walk....and I never have been one to think JFisher is nuts. He will be resigned or tagged. He has been a one man recking crew over there. Every time I turn see them he is wrecking havoc on somebody. Against San Diego they even lined him up at DE....He wrecked the Tackle with a monster bull rush anc clobbered Rivers just as he was letting it go. He would be a beast as a 3-4 End. Stopping the run and rushing. I just don't see it happening.

Saw this on PFT Quote:
[Lance] Briggs and [Assante] Samuel, however, have satisfied provisions in their one-year contracts for 2007, which will make them free and clear for 2008.
So looks like they can't be tagged again? If so, we could open the pocketbook for either of those fellas.

That is correct. With the new CBA extension players cannot be hit with the Franchise Tag more than one year in a row (though there is a qualifier in there somewhere, I just can't remember what it is).... so if they were tagged and payed the season under their one year tag, then they are free agents in '08. Now... Asante Samuel: He's probalby gonna want Nate Clements money... I'm not hip to that at all, I don't care how good he is. Other names to think about here would be Eugene Wilson, Sammy Knight, Mike Doss & Ken Hamlin. Lance Briggs: Instead perhaps consider Karlos Dansby, Boss Bailey or Teddy Lehman. Tedy Bruschi & Mike Vrabel are also Free Agents in case we wanna try to recreate the All-Over30 Gang with them and Willie McG.

Were gonna have to put him on lay-away if we wanna sign him,...with wright & Mcdonald, Bodden were should be ok, not saying we shouldnt look at other FA, just not one thats gonna want 50 mil a year.
Cap money needs to be spent on Def. Lineman. I see us signing 2 FA D_line and maybe a inside LB. I'm not sure if Briggs is a inside LB and if so how much has he benefited with Urlacher on the other side. Cant really say to much about him, dont know enough.
