Just FYI, if anyone cares. I thought it was an interesting group, as always.

The Ventures.... good call and long overdue.

I hate to say it, but Madonna deserves a spot... she is as much of a rock icon (blech) as anyone.

Leonard Cohen... should not have even been mentioned much less have been nominated and then confirmed.

Mellencamp... I don't think he is HoF material.... he was nothing very special at all.

Dave Clark Five - I'll abstain from commenting as I'm not overly familiar with them.

Having both the Ventures and The Dave Clark Five get in is worth it. The DC5 got screwed over big time last year in favor of a rapper no less called Grandmaster Flash even though the DC5 won in the voting...my guess is the rockhall chairman Jann Wenner had to cover his ass this time around because it was Wenner who overruled DC5's induction...he didn't want another year to go by without a rapper getting in.

As far as Madonna and Menstrualcramp goes, screw them.Take their Material Girl and Pink Houses and shove them in their proper place, where the sun doesn't shine.

Leonard Cohen?

I feel the same way, but with KISS...

Link

Most fans are able to recognize the impact that KISS has made on rock and roll, so it's puzzling that they have yet to even be nominated for the Rock Hall. A big reason they're on the outside could be music critic and Rock Hall nominating committee member, Dave Marsh, who once said:

Kiss is not a great band, Kiss was never a great band, Kiss never will be a great band, and I have done my share to keep them off the ballot.

With that kind of prejudice, it's no wonder that Paul Stanley has become bitter about the Rock Hall in general:

The beauty of America is that you can basically start any kind of private club you want to. This one happens to be called the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's a very impressive name for a club but it's an illusion. It's the creation of a group of industry people and critics who decide who they deem as qualified to be in their little admiration society. It's their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but it's not the people's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Have you ever voted? I know I haven't. That's why the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, besides having people who very much belong in there, have an abundance of people who most people will scratch their head and not even have a clue who they are. I don't have anything against anybody who's been inducted, but more than a couple of them are a joke. A band or musician's impact is measured by how they change and influence society and other musicians. That and how many albums and concert tickets they sell should be what gets them into the Hall of Fame. As far as I'm concerned it's a private club with a misleading name. It's a sham.

KISS will never make it because a while back the rockhall asked for artifacts from the band to put on display and gene Simmons said "sure, but only if we get a percentage of the admission fee."Strangely enough no other artist I am aware of has asked for such a rediculous request.Needless to say the rockhall told KISS to KISS OFF! More than this,I don't like the way Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons present themselves. After watching a portion of "KISSOLOGY" on VH-1 Classic, both come across as arrogant and self centered and they act like we're supposed to like them because of who they are.As a teenager I liked them, but I couldn't care less now.Listening to their music now makes me wonder why in the hell I liked them to begin with. I hope they are forever left off the rockhall ballot.

No matter what some people feel about it,I love the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and while I don't agree with their selection process,it still represents what I love dearly, and that's ROCK AND ROLL!!!

I admit, I liked Kiss growing up, but as of late, particularly since Gene Simmons' Family Jewels show, Gene and Paul have become overly arrogant. They always had an attitude, but it seems really out there now.

This better be that the actual ceremony is in Cleveland...where it should be held...

'Major announcement' coming on Rock Hall
Posted by Henry Gomez December 19, 2007 09:12AM

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson will hold a news conference at 1:15 this afternoon to "make major announcements" regarding the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum.

Jackson will be joined by Rock Hall Chief Executive Terry Stewart and officials from the New York-based Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, which nominates and elects members. An advisory sent this morning says they will discuss the 2009 Rock Hall induction ceremony.

Cleveland, which is home to the museum, has hosted the ceremony only once -- in 1997.

Jackson officials declined to comment further this morning.

Cleveland needs to accomodate the rockhall in any way they can. To not have the induction ceremonies here is a farce to say the least.Screw New York...the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is in Cleveland,Ohio!!!

Leonard Cohen....

Madonna....

I agree Rush should be in the hall, as should KISS.
Oh and Mellencamp has had a great career, I'm surprised he wasn't already in.

I imagine there will be a ton of people groaning about Madonna. Heck, I can only think of one Madonna song that I've ever been lukewarm to....but if one thinks that Elvis deserves to be in the Hall...then Madonna does too. Catchy banal pop tunes with flair and iconic style.

Rush has two of (arguably) the best players at their instrument in all of music...as for KISS, the arguement certainly is a valid one...but like Madonna I can think of maybe one or two songs I've even mildly enjoyed.

Regardless of your personal feelings towards Madonna, having as many #1 songs as Elvis Presley is enough to get you into the Rock Hall.

Mellencamp? Eh... I'm not a fan of his. I guess I can see how he could be inducted, but then again he didn't have all that many big songs, and he wasn't a groundbreaking artists or anything. I dunno if he truly deserves it.

KISS deserves it. I don't care if you don't like their music, I don't care if you dislike how Gene Simmons and/or Paul Stanley conduct themselves. Induction into the Rock Hall is neither dependent upon personal taste in music nor what quality of character individuals have. They deserve it based on their originality in stage presence and production, and their influence on many of the metal bands that came after them.

In much the same way, Alice Cooper deserves to be in as well. I could name as many Alice Cooper songs I've heard on the radio as I could Mellencamp songs. Cooper's concert shows were groundbreaking: the on stage antics and gimmicks, no one else was doing, and it obviously inspired bands that came after him to do the same.

I think time will only tell. There was a big stink a few years ago about Black Sabbath getting snubbed a few times, but they're in now.

I don't know about Madonna in the Rock Hall, but since there's no Pop Hall she needs to go somewhere. With over 200 million albums sold and a career lasting 20+ years, she's worthy of the recognition, IMO.

Beerdowner wishes and prays KISS makes it next year...

Get ready to rock, Cleveland -- the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is coming here in March 2009. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and Rock Hall officials made the announcement Wednesday afternoon during a press conference at City Hall.

More induction ceremonies might be hosted by Cleveland in the future, too. The Rock Hall will have the option of bringing its big night here every three years, according to a statement issued by the hall.

Joel Peresman, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, struck a deal with the mayor, Cuyahoga County commissioners and the Rock Hall's local board of directors (which runs the hall in conjunction with the New York-based foundation) to have Cleveland host the ceremony.

The inductions previously took place here only once, at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel in 1997.

"The foundation is fervently committed to the continued success of this institution, and recognizes the significance of the ceremony for Cleveland," Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum President and CEO Terry Stewart said in a statement. "We look forward to working with the community's public and private leadership to provide the support and execution that a world-class event like this deserves."

No word yet on exactly where in Cleveland the induction gala will be held. More details are set to be announced in the spring.

We'll also have to wait until late next year at the earliest to learn which artists will be inducted in 2009. Nominees will not be announced until next fall.

In the meantime, you might want to begin scrimping and saving if you want to attend. Tickets for a seat to the 2008 induction ceremony at Manhattan's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel (where Madonna and others will be enshrined Monday, March 10) range in price from $2,000 to $3,000 a pop, with tables of 10 going for anywhere from $30,000 to $100,000.

The annual gala is the main fund-raiser for the foundation, which controls the inductions. For 20 of the past 22 years, the ceremony has taken place in New York. Besides the temporary move to Cleveland 10 years ago, the ceremony was held once in Los Angeles in 1993.

In the past, foundation officials said it was logical and cost-efficient to have the ceremony in New York because the music industry is largely based there.

Nonetheless, not having the inductions here in the hometown of the $93 million Rock Hall (built with $65 million from public sources) left some Clevelanders feeling slighted, year after year.

In March 2005, Cleveland Councilwoman Dona Brady introduced a resolution to bring the ceremony to Cleveland.

The Rock Hall officials also announced the following developments:

• The Rock Hall plans to open facilities to house temporary exhibits in New York and Memphis, aimed at driving visitors to the museum in Cleveland.

• The Rock Hall has raised $20 million as part of its $35 million Campaign to Support the Rock Hall, with funds earmarked for a library and archives (to open in 2010 as part of the Center for Creative Arts on Cuyahoga Community College's Metropolitan Campus), a redesign of the museum interior and the establishment of an operating reserve for the museum. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation has pledged $8 million toward the campaign.

• Booz Allen Hamilton, a consulting firm, has been enlisted to develop a long-term strategy for beefing up the Rock Hall's technology outreach efforts.

Yeah

Exactly what part of Leonard Cohen would make him suitable for the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame? I don't know of a single thing.

And Mellencamp? Borderline at best. He had a few hits and sold some records, but I don't see him as being a musical influence on later generations or having done anything really special or of note to distinguish himself and make himself worthy. In fact, his best music, BY FAR, was all done before he even started using "Mellencamp". He was a Springsteen wanna-be clone, not anything special or unique.

The Ventures and DC5 are good picks,, I have no idea who Cohen is... A case could be made for Mellencamp, he's had a number of hits and has a pretty big cult following....

Madonna,,, Look, I think she is about as slutty as can be, I also think that shes a user.. but you know what, the woman has had a ton of top ten singles and has sold millions of CD's.... I hate to admit it, but she deserves to be in?

Come on,, someone tell me who Cohen is?

You must not be very old.The DC5 gave the Beatles a run for their money for a few years and had some great songs like "Catch Us If You Can", "Bits and Pieces", Glad All Over", "Anyway You Want It", "Because", "Do You Love Me", "You Got What It Takes", just to name a few. They should have been inducted last year, but a freaking crapper got in instead,a guy named Grandmaster Flash.Clearly the rockhall commitee and their chairman covered their collective asses this time around. How thoughtful.

Or with Cohen or Mellencamp, obviously.

It's nice to have the induction ceremonies here again, but every three years??? It should be every year.
