Nearly 84 million Pro Bowl votes cast on NFL.com and Sprint Wireless
NFL.com

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre received 1,140,863 votes to lead all NFL All-Stars in balloting for the 2008 NFL Pro Bowl, NFL.com announced today. Presented by Sprint, 2008 NFL Pro Bowl voting on NFL.com and on wireless phones with Sprint service ended on Tuesday, December 11.

There was a record 83.7 million votes cast on NFL.com and on wireless phones with Sprint service using more than 2,262,000 ballots. There were nearly 14 million more votes cast this year than last year.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (1,037,608 votes) ranks second overall while Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning (991,418 votes), Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (830,789 votes) and New England Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss (806,455 votes) round out the top five on NFL.com. Romo received the highest number of votes from voters using Sprint's service.

The AFC and NFC All-Star squads are made up of the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group's vote counts one-third towards determining the 43-man rosters that represent the American Football Conference and National Football Conference in the Pro Bowl. NFL players and coaches are casting their votes December 13-14.

The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its all-star teams. It was the first professional sports league to offer online all-star voting in 1995.

The teams will be announced at 4 p.m. (ET) Tuesday, December 18 on a special NFL Total Access 2008 NFL Pro Bowl Selection Show on NFL Network. The Pro Bowl will be played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday, February 10 and will be televised by FOX.

In addition to casting ballots on NFL.com/probowl, fans cast their Pro Bowl ballot by sending the text message "PRO" to 7777 from a phone with Sprint wireless service and voting for their favorite players at select positions.

Fans who voted for their Pro Bowl players were able to enter for a chance to win a trip to Hawaii to attend the NFL Pro Bowl in the 2008 NFL Pro Bowl Sweepstakes sponsored by Sprint. The Grand Prize includes an all-expense paid 5-day, 4-night trip for the winner and one guest to the 2008 NFL Pro Bowl in Honolulu. In addition to air transportation, ground transportation, hotel accommodations and two game tickets, the winner and guests will experience an insider tour of the sidelines and locker room at Aloha Stadium.

Look like Brett Favre and the Vikings backfield are going to be playing for the Cowboys in the Pro Bowl. Hahah, wow. and the NFC defense is a hybrid of Bears and Cowboys, along with Umenyiora and Sean Taylor, may he rest in peace.

CRIBBS!!!!!!!!!!!! I love IT!

Also, I'm glad to see Sean Taylor the top vote getter at his position. I voted for him too. I think it'd be really nice if the NFC squad did what Washington did and start the game with 10.

I think Cribbs and Steinbach are shoo-ins. Braylon will probably get in IMO and if he doesn't I'll be upset. Winslow is really up in the air, but I can see him getting screwed over by the Gates/Gonzalez duo again. While I'd love to see Thomas there and I think he deserves it I just don't know that he makes it as a rookie. DA doesn't stand a chance from what I can tell, because Brady is a lock, Peyton probably will be and either Big Ben, Palmer or Garrard will get in over him. I don't think a single member of our defense goes.

This sure will be interesting to hear though, for the first time in a looooong time, we're gonna have some Brownies in the Pro Bowl.

I'm glad the fans vote only counts for a third.. anyone think Tony Ugoh should go in before Joe Thomas ? Hopefully the coaches and players will know the difference.

Brady and Manning will definitely go.

I thikn that 3rd spot is a toss up though. Big Ben hasnt been all that amazing in recent weeks. Garrard doesnt have the numbers DA has.

Those 3 will be a tight race. I hope DA gets in. That'd be great. In terms of our situation itd help immensely. If our goal is in fact to move him after this year, being a Pro Bowl player would certainly raise his value.

I saw that and was very pissed. There is not a better LT in the AFC, IMO, right now and Tony Friggin Ugoh was ahead of Thomas? Bull...

71 receptions and 971 yds with 5 td's...

Sadly I see Kellen getting the Jack because of competing with Gates and Gonzo... Not to take anything away from them by any means as both are putting up great numbers but Kellen will in all likelyhood lead both of them in receptions and yds. when it is all said and done this year...

What makes no sense to me is letting fans vote. There is a lot of money in incentives the players can make by going to a pro bowl. Having a third of the votr as nothing more than a popularity contest is just wrong IMO.

Yeah, it's really unfortunate because those are Pro Bowl numbers no matter how you slice it and he may not even get in.

I think we end up sending Cribbs, Steinbach and Braylon with Winslow and Thomas as alternates.

Removing the homer glasses here and still cannot see how they get shunned... It is a numbers/stats driven popularity contest and our guys have the stats/numbers to compete with the best of them... Where they lose it is in the popularity contest...

Tony Freaking Ugoh over Joe Thomas??? We have 3 that SHOULD start and 2 that can make a strong case for being alternates...

Hope I am wrong and the media sees differently than the fan voters...

I would be thrilled if these guys get the recognition, they deserve it.

I also feel Hank should also get some love. I don't know where the players have graded out so far, but I'm willing to bet Hank is near the top. Add to that he is the offensive captain, making all the line calls to protect a first year starter.

According to Newsnet5.com - Cribbs has made the Pro Bowl.

http://www.newsnet5.com/sports/14882579/detail.html

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Browns wide receiver Joshua Cribbs made the list of this year's AFC Pro Bowl Selections.

The player's agent told NewsChannel5 that the official announcement would be made at 4 p.m.

Cribbs, one of the NFL's top kickoff return men, has sparked the Browns all season.

Cribbs had two touchdown returns this year, a 99-yarder in Oakland and 100-yarder in Pittsburgh on Nov. 11.

The NFL Pro Bowl game is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 10 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.

That's awesome. Well-deserved too!!!
How about that for an undrafted QB from Kent St? Pro-Bowl as a kick returner.

Sources: Dallas Cowboys will send 11 to Pro Bowl

02:29 PM CST on Tuesday, December 18, 2007

From Staff Reports

IRVING – The Dallas Cowboys will match a team record Tuesday when 11 players are selected to play in the Pro Bowl, according to sources.

The 11 players are offensive tackle Flozell Adams, running back Marion Barber, guard Leonard Davis, kicker Nick Folk, center Andre Gurode, safety Ken Hamlin, cornerback Terence Newman, wide receiver Terrell Owens, quarterback Tony Romo, linebacker DeMarcus Ware and tight end Jason Witten.

Four Cowboys were picked as Pro Bowl alternates: linebacker Greg Ellis, safety Roy Williams, punter Mat McBriar and special teamer Keith Davis.

The official announcement is set for 3 p.m. (CT) and is being televised by the NFL Network.

The NFC will face the AFC in the Pro Bowl on Feb. 10 in Honolulu.

Gonzalez, Allen named to Pro Bowl
By KENT BABB
The Kansas City Star

Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen and tight end Tony Gonzalez were named today to this year's Pro Bowl. It will be Allen's first appearance on the roster and Gonzalez's ninth consecutive appearance.

"For Tony to keep a streak like that, that's hard to do in today's NFL," coach Herm Edwards said.

Gonzalez has made the Pro Bowl in all but two of his 11 seasons, all of which have been with the Chiefs. He has a team-high 82 catches for 971 yards and five touchdowns.

Edwards said he also is impressed with Allen's selection. The fourth-year end from Idaho State was a fourth-round pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. He is tied for sixth in the NFL this season with 11.5 sacks.

"He came in here and made himself a Pro Bowl player," Edwards said. "I don't even think he was on the ballot last year. With this year, not even having a real good record this year and not winning a lot of games, I think his play kind of demonstrates who he is and sets him apart."

It is, however, the fewest number of Chiefs to make the Pro Bowl since guard Will Shields was the team's only representative in 1998.

Edwards made it as a reserve, Cribbs as the KR.

No other Browns made it at all (at least on this roster, may change due to injuries).

Looks like the coaches did us a favor and saved Lerner from paying out additional incentives for those with Pro Bowl clauses in their contracts for the Browns.

I can't believe Steinbach didn't make it (at least as a backup.)

Link To Vic's Opinion

For the most part, the Pro Bowl selectors got it right.

Players, coaches, and the fans who voted on NFL.com did a solid job of selecting the AFC and NFC representatives for the league's Feb. 10 all-star game in Honolulu.

There were no outrageous choices, nor outrageous omissions.

Still, as is customary throughout the NFL on this day, I feel compelled to point out some players who would be justified in feeling slighted.

Let's start with the AFC.

I don't have a strong argument against any of the four receivers chosen (Randy Moss, New England; Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis; Braylon Edwards, Cleveland, and T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Cincinnati). Each has been exceptional in his own right.

But what about Wes Welker?

G. Newman Lowrance / Getty Images
Wes Welker has had a big year for the Patriots but he isn't headed to Hawaii.

Besides Moss and quarterback Tom Brady, Welker has been a major factor in the Patriots' 14-0 season. It could be argued that without Welker's ability to consistently get open over the middle, there would be far fewer long-distance connections between Brady and Moss on the perimeter. Numerous coaches and league executives have told me that the key to New England's passing success is Welker. If you think about it the winning streak probably would have ended against Philadelphia had Welker not come through with his 13-catch game.

Other than New England's Matt Light, I am not loving the AFC choices at offensive tackle. Baltimore's Jonathan Ogden is a Pro Bowl fixture and certainly had reputation going for him. However, there isn't a whole lot about the Ravens' offense this season that said Pro Bowl to me. Buffalo's Jason Peters was worthy of recognition, although, again, the Bills' offense hardly made a case for anyone to be considered an all-star.

A player who should have been included is Cleveland rookie tackle Joe Thomas, who has performed very much like an established veteran in both pass protection and run-blocking. Without Thomas, the Browns would not have their explosive passing game, Jamal Lewis would not be experiencing a career revival, and Cleveland would not be in contention to reach the postseason for the first time since 2002.

Speaking of the Browns, quarterback Derek Anderson would have been my pick over Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger for the third spot behind Brady and Indianapolis' Peyton Manning. Anderson has done a tremendous job of getting the ball into the hands of Edwards and his other talented receivers.
A strong case also could be made for Jacksonville's David Garrard to fill the No. 3 quarterback job on the AFC squad. Garrard has been incredibly efficient while also making big plays to complement the running of Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew.

Speaking of Taylor, why isn't he one of the AFC team's running backs? San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson and Pittsburgh's Willie Parker are good picks, and I don't have any serious issue with the selection of the Colts' Joseph Addai. However, Taylor has been such a huge factor in allowing the Jaguars to establish themselves as one of the top teams in the AFC.

I like the AFC's three defensive ends -- Kansas City's Jared Allen, Tennessee's Kyle Vanden Bosch, and Miami's Jason Taylor. But I would can't help but wonder what happened to Houston's Mario Williams. True, his biggest game (3½ sacks) didn't come until Week 15 against Denver, but he was having a strong enough year before then to merit a trip to the Pro Bowl.

Now for some second-guessing on the NFC side.

I'm generally OK with the four receiver picks: Terrell Owens, Dallas; Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona; Torry Holt, St. Louis, and Donald Driver, Green Bay.

Paul Spinelli / Getty Images
Marques Coltson is second in the NFC in receptions but he won't be going to Hawaii.

But I'm surprised not to see Marques Colston of New Orleans. After all, he is second in the conference with 87 receptions for 1,092 yards and nine touchdowns. That's better than all of the wide receivers chosen (Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten of the Cowboys is first with 88 catches).

Although Driver was more productive, the Packer receiver I would have selected was Greg Jennings, who had a much higher yards-per-catch average (17.6 to Driver's 13.0) and many more touchdowns (12 to Driver's two).

Three other Green Bay players with legitimate beefs for being left out of the Pro Bowl voting are offensive guard Chad Clifton, linebacker Nick Barnett, and cornerback Charles Woodson.

The Packers' offense is about much more than Brett Favre's ageless arm or the pass-catching skills of Driver and Jennings. Clifton had done a tremendous job of helping to give Favre ample time to throw, and in opening holes for Ryan Grant, who emerged from virtually nowhere to give the Packers a running game.

Barnett and Woodson have been two of the best players on a solid defense. Barnett is on a par statistically with the two inside/middle linebackers chosen, Seattle's Lofa Tatupu and San Francisco rookie Patrick Willis. Al Harris, the Packers' other cornerback, did make the NFC squad, which probably hurt Woodson's ability to also be selected. But Woodson has had an outstanding year and is arguably the stronger player in coverage.

This whole system is obviously a joke. Ogden makes the Pro Bowl when he hasn't even played much this year and when he has played, he hans't played that great. I think even the players and coaches feel an obligation to vote for these guys that have been good for so long, even when they don't deserve it anymore.

Edwards, Cribbs headed to Hawaii
Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
12.18.2007

After a five-year hiatus, the Browns are back in the Pro Bowl.

The NFL announced wide receiver Braylon Edwards and kick returner Joshua Cribbs will represent the AFC squad on Tuesday.

Their selections are the first of their three-year careers and the first for the Browns since Jamir Miller was chosen following the 2001 season. Edwards was the first draft choice of the Romeo Crennel/Phil Savage Browns in the 2005 draft, while Cribbs was signed as undrafted free agent after that draft.

The Browns also had four players chosen as first alternates -- quarterback Derek Anderson, tight end Kellen Winslow, left tackle Joe Thomas and left guard Eric Steinbach. Fullback Lawrence Vickers is a second alternate, and kicker Phil Dawson is a third alternate.

The Pro Bowl will be played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu on Sunday, February 10 and will be televised by FOX.

"As a team, we're proud of the recognition received by Braylon Edwards and Joshua Cribbs," Browns general manager Phil Savage said. "They both deserved this honor. We're excited about our future because of them and our other players who were chosen as alternates as well.

"Winning brings attention and it's great to be on the plus side of the ledger so far this season. Now that this is over, our full attention can go to this week's game against Cincinnati."

Edwards leads the Browns with 1,170 yards receiving and 13 touchdowns and ranks second on the club with 69 receptions.

Edwards is currently fifth in the NFL with his 1,170 yards receiving and his 13 touchdowns rank third in the league and have tied the Browns' all-time single-season record set by Gary Collins in 1963.

He's the first Browns' wide receiver selected to the Pro Bowl since Webster Slaughter in 1990.

Cribbs has totaled 53 kickoff returns for 1,637 yards and a 30.9 average, both league highs. He's scored two kick return touchdowns -- a 90-yarder in Oakland and a 100-yarder in Pittsburgh -- and has also returned 24 punts for 243 yards (10.1 avg.).

His 10.1 punt return average ranks seventh in the league, and Cribbs is also tied for the team lead with 18 special teams tackles.

The Pro Bowl teams are selected through a combination of voting from players, coaches, and fans, with each group's vote counting for one-third of the final total. Cribbs and Steinbach were the leading fan vote-getters at their respective positions.

The Browns last had two Pro Bowlers in 1994, when kick returner Eric Metcalf and defensive tackle Michael Dean Perry were chosen. They had six Pro Bowlers in 1995, but before this season Miller the only Brown of the new era to receive the honor.
