I think it's more likely that our defense would be more responsible for a first round loss than our QB's would be..
It's possible. Heck some on here blame our defense when our offense gives the other team the ball on our 10 and we give up points... Yet when our defense gives our offense the ball on the other teams 10 and we get points, it's all hooray for the offense for scoring points.....
Our defense needs to improve, no doubt about it... but the defense and the special teams have given this team a whole lot of cheap points this season, for which the offense has been given almost all of the credit...
Oh well, back to the topic... Good season for DA, he has played well enough to win us a lot more games than most expected. It has been exciting and entertaining and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for DA and the Browns..

I was thinking back to the day we cut(traded) Chuck......how people were calling us the laughing stock of the league.
Suppose we don't go hard for DA....someone offers him but makes a offer can can match and we choose not to do so.....I wonder if laughing stock would be an appropriate moniker then, for not keeping a pro-bowl alternate qb??

I didn't have the patience to look it up ...... but I'd bet not that many either way.

I doubt it. Kitna had a good year before Cincy let him walk for Palmer. Brees was outstanding before they let him walk for Rivers. And, for the most part, it has worked out well for those teams.
We'd be laughing stocks if there wasn't somone waiting who everyone "anticipated" would be playing anyway.

You just don't get it...Why doesn't that surprise me
"It is so cool to see how a piece of crap that so many felt should have been cut in the preseason has all of a sudden turned into the golden goose."
Ummm...well where ya been. Actually not in those words but DA started this season as a backup QB not faring well at all in a QB competition - to a starting NFL QB that has been a leader of our team that also were similarly classed as a piece of crap and has all of a sudden turned into the golden goose.
Wouldn't you say - even with your limited wisdom DA sort of defines what this season is all about?
"And guess what should we lose the next two games and Anderson be one of the factors in those losses, all of a sudden he will be back to being a piece of crap."
That almost sounds like a desire of yours so that you can pat yourself on the back.
Ummmm...btw wouldn't that mean that the 07 season is through? Isn't the whole premise of this thread a realization of the PRESENT...not the future.
As mentioned several times. The DEADBATE is about 08 not 07. Unless you are the minority who actually thinks it is wise to bench him now and put in BQ...btw that worked real well for Shanahan last year didn't it.
some posters just don't get it. JMHO

Kitna was a veteran ..... but not much more though. He was a journeyman type QB. He also didn't just "play 16 great games, then walk" ........ he started 16 for the Bengals in 2003 ..... then started only 3 games over the next 2 seasons combined, appearing in 7 total. Then he walked, after Palmer had started 29 games over the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Kitna then appeared in Detroit for the 2006 season.
Brees was injured, and the Saints pursued him hard anyway. That could have worked out either way for them .... but the Chargers were obviously scared of a big money deal for a QB with a fairly severely injured shoulder

I don't think that laughing-stock would be appropriate, I'm sure many would state the obvious risk in putting all of the eggs in the basket of an unproven Quinn, and rightfully so.
But in the end, if Quinn produces, letting DA go would be forgotten about as quickly as letting Frye go, which you seldom hear about anymore... however if Quinn struggles it will be front page news every day... especially if DA goes somewhere and does well. It would be one of those moves that we would not know the full impact of for a couple years... Plus you would have to throw in the impact of whatever player/draft selection we would get for letting Anderson go.... It would be complicated, some would boil it down to wins and losses but it likely wouldn't be that simple.

Well for this year, we must look at everything overall. If you want to be objective IMO, DA should get credit for a couple of things. Yet, it amazes me when some tend to overstate and embelish what it are or are not things he should get "all the praise" for. Firstly, had we not signed Stenbach and drafted JT, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. On the offensive side of the ball, I can see us being a team much like Denver to the point we will be a team where you can "insert average player here" and still win. Of course, if you aren't really "old school", I doubt some will buy into that. But while some schemes have changed, it's those 3rd and shorts, 4th and short down conversions, that often make or break your season over time, and sometimes, in a single play. Point being, The game is won and lost in the trenches. If DA didn't have protection, which gives him a "comfort level" and security, I honestly believe we would have seen the same nervous, mistake prone guy we did last year. So DA has "developed poise", but only due to the "environment of success" that was built around him. A cumulative effort to build that environment. He has brought us back in the clutch in some games which he does deserve credit for. But the fact is, many of us have professed that if you "build an environment for success", which IS the OL, a slightly above average RB and an average QB can win games and score points. But you have to have that OL in order to make that happen. Otherwise,it's a futile effort. It has taken the run blocking a while longer to progress than the pass blocking. But it is coming along and it's showing. In the last four games, our D is getting better. They have made key stops and created turnovers that have given our O great field posession. Our team has some momentum. Josh Cribbs has made plays that have made the difference in a W/L. I believe overall, that DA has played "good enough to win with this team". Much like Dilfer was good enough to win with the Rats. The help in the right places have been placed around him to create a situation that he has time in the pocket, we can run, and in a LOT of cases, our WR's and TE's have made a LOT of tough catches! We have reached "another level" this season. We are a legitimate threat to many teams. I know this team is not a finished product. And to this point it seems, we are building for the long haul. DA has played better than I had expected. I did believe he would be "somewhat better" because ANY time you give a QB a running game and good pass protection, he'll be better than he was with NO running game and NO pass protection!! But with these ingrediants built around him, he has looked faily average overall. At times he looks good. At times he looks like he's lost. On one drive he'll thread the needle on a couple of passes. Then throw three WAY behind the WR's. I believe he is very inconsistant overall, and makes some bad decisions. He has cut down on those bad decisions with the better pass protection and is young. But the inconsistancy has been a constant. And I do know that we aren't talking about 2008 and beyond. But the fact remains that the things DA does well and the things he doesn't do so well, are the very things that will enter into the equsion. Yes, we have reached "another level". But to get to where we all want to be, there is yet another level to reach. What our players are doing "on the field THIS year" will show their ability or lack there of, to "play at that next level". Seperating one from the other is not in any way realistic.

DA whether anyone wants to admit it or not is one of the biggest reasons for this teams success. I think his attitude toward the game has made this game fun for a lot of players that havent had that much fun since becoming a Brown. i tell ya around the league DA is reminding folks of a young Bret Farve.
I know he has his haters but his arm stregth, his attack mentality, his child like manor towards the game is very reminiscent of Farve. Thats not saying he will ever be half as good as Bret but u cant help to see a lot of those very same qualities.

"I know he has his haters but his arm stregth..."
I have some questions about his game which I probably won't bring up until this season is over with. But if I do - I don't see how that would quantify me as a "HATER" - I don't hate him in any way, shape or form.

Same goes for me eo. I see many weaknesses in his game overall. But bottom line is, he's performed better than I expected. As I said earlier, I think a good OL providing him time has done much to improve his confidence and comfort level in the pocket. Which I expected. But with that said, the improvement is far greater than I thought it would be. Still, all and all, I find him suspect in many aspects of his game. That doesn't make me "a hater". But around here it does.....

Wonder what DA would be doing if he had the "O" line that Couch had?

Probably sitting on the bench in a daze, shaking his head at the beating our new QB is taking.
IMO the point is he doesn't have the same line as Couch, and he's using the tools around him to be successful. People can point out the downside of any player, and many do. Most do it, unadmittingly, to act as if they are more knowledgable than the next guy. Some do it for some personal agendas, such as wanting someone else to play. Others do it, just for conversations sake. Favre had no team for a couple years and people were bashing him for bad decisions left and right. This year he has some recievers and some blocking and the bashing has stopped. Palmer is having a down season in some peoples minds, but Chad has over 100 yds. and TJ is setting team records for receptions. This is a team sport, and good teams make QBs and other high profile position players look good. DA is using the tools around him and having a lot of success. He IS a probowl alternate because of it. Nit pick his game all you want, but the fact remains the team is winning with him, and he is considered a leader on the field by his fellow players. His TD to INT ratio is pretty good and he has over 20 TDs. I personally don't know what some of you expect.
I was one looking to cut DA in the preseason. Now I have to agree with those who think it would be foolish to let him go. Quinn's potential, IMO, is meaningless. Potential and a dollar get you a dollar. Until he sees significant playing time and performs up to what we have with DA, I can't be as confident as some are about his ability.
If we are offered the top tender of a 1st and 3rd round pick, I could see taking it. The problem then becomes, can Quinn win at least 9 games next year? If he don't, trading DA will be seen as a mistake. Many will use different reasons for the situation, such as a tougher schedule, but remember this, DA is in his first year as a starter. He will be seasoned next year and more confident. I hope we sign him for one more year, and if Quinn beats him out in camp, it will be a win-win.
Hopefully tomarrow, by the 4th quarter, we are up by 20 points or so and RAC throws him in for a few series. Or maybe we clinch a play-off spot this week and he sees a little playing time against the niners

Talk about pure conjecture with no basis of fact. Try being a little more objective. Do YOU want this team to be "the best it can be" or do you want to come out on "the short end of the stick" every year?
What many do is look at our players, break down the positions and critique where our weaknesses are and where upgrades could and can be made. In case you're confused, that's how Super Bowl teams and dynasties are built. Not by resting on your laurels and accepting the status quo. It's EXACTLY why teams like the Rats go backwards and fall apart, while teams like New England stay in contention year in and year out. It's called "Football".

He also has more Int's than any other QB. Something you don't here mentioned a lot. And if you're seriously trying to compare DA to Brett Favre you really need to stop. This forum is for football information, not comedy relief!

And the Rats won a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer as QB. Are you going to compare Trent Dilfer to Brett Favre next? What people "expect" is a high caliber QB to take us to "the next level". Yes, DA is young, but his accuracy is still VERY questionable. Along with a few other things.
And I can tell you without a doubt what "some" expect. They expect everyone to go "rah, rah" and never question our players or coaches. Not gonna happen. People improve, digress or are stagnant. DA has progressed. RAC has progressed. Over the past month our D has progressed.
But bottom line is, this team is NOT a "finished product". All indications are it's on its way. But there will be many changes before we see SB rings on our players fingers.
The fact is, Phil has purchased a thoroughbred. He has hitched his wagon to another horse. He knows upgrades will be made and he's already played his hand on the fact he sees the QB position as one of them.
Say what you will, but not following through with Quinn would appear just as big of a blunder as anything and Phil has already made that call when he paid such a high price moving up in the draft.
And despite the "Love Fest", when truely studying DA's game, there is room for much improvement. Question is, who has the most upside? Smart money bets on the thoroughbred.

"Wonder what DA would be doing if he had the "O" line that Couch had?"
1. Its irrelevant cause simply we don't have the same OL.
2. What would he be doing? Nothing great just like every other QB in the history of football. I think maybe Fran Tarkenton was the only QB to have some success with a sub standard OL.
PitDawg...why fall into the trap. Take it to the many Deadbate threads.
BT58...woah there. Hope you got that PHD in Psychology handy. Most actually post cause we just love talking about our Browns...and if doing so negatives are brought out in their play - the list you provide is very self sufficient to your argument...btw way did you mention agenda
I cannot speak for others. There are some facts here and I won't even get into the critiquing of DA as was my promise.
1. We have invested high in BQ - we specifically meaning Savage - he's the same one who brought DA here. I think he knows what he's doing.
2. DA has exceeded all expectations even Savage n RAC - I do believe in the master plan he was going to be our very reliable back-up QB. But he has exceeded those expectations.
3. You mention excuses??? Why? you yourself feel that BQ will be the QB in 08? Its a fact not an excuse...08 schedule will be extremely hard!
When I make my arguments on the deadbate I do so not out of the Ego BS crapola agenda reasons you give (I see and those on your side of the argument are just PURE and EVERTHING GOOD...lol
But I'll do so with everything in my heart and knowledge on what I opine to be Good for the Browns. Pure and simple.

I don’t know if this has been pointed out, but DA has had experience in this offensive system prior to Chud becoming our O-Coordinator. In 2001 and 2002, DA played quarterback at Oregon State under head coach Dennis Erickson, the inventor of the 90s Miami 3 Receiver offense which Chud ended up running a version of while at the U.
These facts just revealed themselves to me so, if someone had already pointed them out on the boards, I apologize for the redundancy. But, surely, this points out a part of the reason for DA’s big jump this year, he’s familiar with some of the concepts we’re using on offense.
Of course, this offense can’t reveal how high either of our quarterbacks’ ceilings are until either quarterback reaches it, so this is just a minor point in our QB debate. I really wouldn’t want to be Phil and Romeo having to decide between DA and Brady after this year is over. But I do know the truth in the statement: The evil we know is more manageable than the evil we do not know.

Derek Anderson is a bum.
He overthrows and underthrows and locks onto his receivers just like any other number of bums have in the past.
He's been luckier than hell all year, and he revealed himself today for what he truly is.....a bum from a second-hand college that will never make it in the NFL.

Just clicking, not to go Mensa on everyone, but DA's first seven starts vs. his last 7 tell a HUGE story...
Last 7 starts…
8 TD’s, 9 INT’s 74.1 QB rating 54.5 completion % 218 yards per game
First 7 starts…
101.0 rating 275 YPG 60.1 completion % 16 TD’s, 8 INT’s

Time to take it back.
Most (including myself) underrated him prior to the year, and in that spirit, most have overrated him to this point.
I don't know what thread I put it in, but a week or so ago I explained that we have enough information now to write the book on Anderson. That book doesn't appear to be good enough to anoint him the QB of the future.
I can admit being wrong that he's not a complete stiff. I wonder if people can look at his issues and reconsider their position that he should get a long-term contract.
I think people would be wise to take my position on this: Put the high tender on Anderson. If a team is dumb enough to give up a 1st AND a 3rd to get him, we take it and run. If not, we get Anderson for one more year to evaluate his progress to see if he can overcome his obvious deficiencies. That also gives Quinn more time to learn.
DA has gotten plenty of due......now it's time to give DA the goat-horns because he lost us the game today.

Okay Toad...If that were to happen.....Were would we go for that 1st and third....any D-line men coming into the draft that would be worth that pick? Or do you go BA..
If Quinn beats him out next season...Imo...Would`nt mind seeing DA as our back up...
But really this should what till after the season to discuss...

It's probably too early to take a look at the college players coming out. Some juniors would become obvious 1st rounders, FA signings would impact how we draft and who we look at, and we still need the workouts and combines to happen in order to pick out the names.
What we do know is that if Anderson doesn't pan out, we've got a 1st rounder waiting in the wings. Is Quinn good? Is he bad? We don't know, but what we DO know is that he's the guy we chose to be the QB of the future, so he WILL get his crack at it if Anderson is allowed to leave. Since our offense is in excellent standing (with or without Anderson) it's pretty obvious that our focus would be on defense, where we absolutely SUCK.
DA won't stick as a backup. He'd be an unrestricted free agent after next season and would surely walk away if Quinn is named the starter. The alternative is to sign him to a big contract now, but I think such a move is extremely premature and not at all wise.
Shotty: Anderson doesn't have a ton of experience, so he should get a little benefit of the doubt. However, while QB's can improve decision making, they either come into the league accurate or not. Anderson isn't, and rarely do QB's suddenly become significantly more accurate as time goes on.
As of right now, Anderson has a QB rating of 82.75, and his completion percentage is going to rank right around 30th in the league.
I'm going to take a long, comprehensive look at Anderson once the numbers for all the games this week are updated. I doubt people will like what they show.........

Why do you feel the need to repost these in this thread? I understand this is a message board and anyone has the right to post anything in any thread that is within the rules. I understand the need to want to blast DA, especially after today. The thing is there are multiple thread on this board where that can be done. Eo started this thread to try to give DA some props for what he has been able to do. EO doesn't care for DA that much, seriously I don't care for him much better than EO. It is just nice to be able to read nice things about a guy who has brought us so much joy over the past year. He has exceeded my expectations this year. I was one of the guys who thought we should have cut him. Even if he tanks next week, and even in the playoffs if we get there, he has helped this team and us fans by bringing a winning season two a city who has only had one since 99.

I think what they'll show is that he's more valuable to us as trade bait than as a long-term starter. They'll also probably show just how much a great OL can make a QB look good in games... and that we could stick Spergeon Freakkin Wynn back there and probably win at least 4-6 games.
I've been enjoying the hell out of this season... but looking at DA- under a microcope- without benefit of his team mates...
As much as I've liked what he's done for us and himself, he's still one streaky, scary dude.

I have been biting my tongue when it comes to DA all year saying I would wait till the end of the season to make up my mind about him. I didn't comment after his good games, and I didn't comment on his bad games. I have stayed out of the debates about keeping him or signing him or trading him, and I will continue to bite my tongue until a few weeks after the season ends.
I AM ALWAYS RIGHT... except when I am wrong.

My thing is this....
People know that he may not always make the best decision with the football, so when you give a guy almost 50 times to throw the ball, mistakes are bound to happen.
IMO, the game goes half/half on DA and offensive playcalling. We have a work horse in Jamal Lewis, who was/is on a roll the past few weeks, yet we want to air it out on just about every play.
Notice how they didn't show a Jamal Lewis press conference this game. Romeo just said he was our cow bell on offense, yet we didn't use him not nearly enough. Being down is a reason, but when it got 19-7, there was still plenty of time to play your regular game plan and not panic IMO.
Lewis ran well on his 20 or so attempts, and so did Jason Wright.
O well... can't turn back the hands of time at this point. Can only hope that the Colts will beat the Titans.
I watched the Braylon Edwards interview, and was it me, or did it seem like he was about to hit a Hines Ward and shed a few tears?
