Anyone watch? If you did who won and why?

DeSantis won the most owned award. Newsom made DeSantis look like a high school debater up against a presidential challenger.

I watched a guy in real time tank his own presidential campaign over some personal beef. Man literally threw a hissy fit to get into a debate with a guy who isn’t even his competitor in the primaries, just to get completely dog walked all night.

And flaws and all, I hope Newsom runs for president in 2028.

Knew about it, didn't watch.

I'll just say this: If your response to someone calling out your state for its mental health shortcomings is to hold up a poop map, then you did not win the debate.

Again, didn't watch it so I have to ask, who did that?

I watched most of the highlights. Newsom is really impressive.

I read an article by a former FBI agent trained the science of understanding body language. He watched the debate on mute.

It was fascinating what he had to say. Every face muscle is studied. Every gesture and movement is a tell.

Newsom cleaned his clock.

I wish Newsom was running now.

DeSantis should not have accepted this mission.

For the life of me, I'm not sure why these two even debated? One is running for President and getting his arse handed to him by Trump and they other isn't running for President (yet)!

I've now heard a bunch of excerpts,,, It appears that Newsom crushed DeSantis but again, I didn't hear it all so it's hard to tell for sure.

I wouldn’t call it a “crushing” because Newsom obviously has his warts, too.

I do think it’s more of a bad look for DeSantis among unbiased voters because it appeared to me that he came out behind Newsom in both form a substance on a debate that was aired on Fox News, with Sean Hannity as the moderator, blatantly lobbing him softballs.

He definitely played in a home stadium with house rules and fell flat.

It's the only type of reply he can make since there is zero substance involved. The actual problem is he doesn't like the facts that get posted so he makes light of them with zero substance for his rationale. They avoid everything that gets posted. They refuse to call trump out on anything. They ignore commenting on how the Speaker of the House who claims some moral high ground just supported a book full of conspiracy theories and gay bashing. How the head of the Florida GOP had a theesome and is being accused of rape. While his wife who was included in the threesome is the head of Mom's for Liberty admitted the threesome while she actively works to ban books and silence the LGBTQ community in Florida schools.

And what do we hear from them them? Crickets. Then when he does decide to comment in such a thread it's nothingness.

I've met Peen. He's a good guy. I like him. I don't hold the fact he is misguided against him.

But your all are wrong.

I don't need to watch some debate. Both are Governors of states. I just need to see which state is being run in the best way.


The winner is clear. Talk is cheap, it takes money to buy whisky.

1. This thread is about the actual debate itself. By your logic, I guess why even have debates?

2. What policies do you think DeSantis actually implemented to make his state better vs the policies Newsom implemented to make his state worse? I'm actually not a fan of Newsom, much at all. I think he's a champagne socialist, in the same vein a lot of California Democrats are. *PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PHRASE DOES NOT MEAN I ACTUALLY THINK HE'S A SOCIALIST - IT'S A FIGURE OF SPEECH* Sitting at The French Laundry during the pandemic I think embodies his flaws in a nutshell. That being said, the one thing I actually struggle with on DeSantis' front is I don't know what actual substantive policies the guy has implemented aside from cultural wars and antagonism. He goes hard in the paint in appealing to the lowest common denominator, which I think is a fair and objective criticism of his style. The dude just got over saying "woke" about 15 times in a sentence. He plays to people's fear and anger and says very little substance about policies and fixing things, and actually making day-to-day life better for Floridians.

3. As far as Florida goes, I really hate to borrow a phrase from Jim Harbaugh, but Florida was burgeoning long before DeSantis took office. Bush, Crist and Scott all did a decent job at implementing policies and growing the state. To borrow Harbaugh's phrase, DeSantis appears to have been born on third base and thinks he hit a home run. He also appears to be running back to second base, with things like the culture wars, Disney, insurance, etc.

4. As an analogy, Norv Turner took over the Chargers from Marty Schottenheimer and actually made the AFC Championship, but then they got steadily worse over time. Turns out he wasn't that good of an HC and perhaps profited off of coming into a great situation in the first place, only making it worse. If someone like Matt Gaetz comes in to the Governor's seat next, I don't think things will be any better.

You are trying to add actual substance to this thing. That is frowned upon.

I think the real question here is why this even happened in the first place.

Is DeSantis really that desperate for air time? Newsom is the embodiment of everything DeSantis is culture-warring against, but he had to know something like this would happen. Newsom is an excellent debator (I would argue that's one of the few things he's got going for him as a CA politician venturing outside his bubble). DeSantis... isn't. Debating is an artform and DeSantis is writing in crayon.

But my question is what DeSantis was hoping to get out of this. Hypothetically, if he'd "won" vs Newsom, would that have moved the needle for him at all (debating vs someone other than a current presidential candidate would have minimal, if any, impact... IMO). Best case, he'd notch a win in his ongoing culture wars, but would that swing any voters his way? He's already established himself as a poor-man's DJT, so I can't imagine him pulling voters from there.

You bring up an interesting point but I think he was using the same thought process as Peen is posting. "Owning the libs". I believe he felt it would simply be a feather in his cap. And I mean let's face it, he had the deck stacked in his favor going into this. On FOX News with Hannity as the moderator. It was as if Newsom was facing two opponents at once. Going into this I was wondering why Newsom would place himself at such a disadvantage? And as it turned out Hannity was somewhat of an aid to DeSantis even though it seemed to fail.

Newsom, while I felt he was walking into a trap, faired very well through it all. And his motivation was clear. He is setting himself up for a future run for the presidency. And I'm not so far away form 05's opinion of Newsom. The problem with that is the GOP has painted every democrat as "the most liberal and socialist to ever run for president". They've used that same message with everyone from Bill Clinton to Obama to Biden. So when they try to use that same tactic with Newsom it will sound like The boy Who Cried Wolf.

There are quite a few people that felt Desantis won the debate and made both Newsome and his liberal policies in California look really bad. Also, Newsome's wife actually ended the debate when she insisted Newsome leave the debate. There has also been California fact checkers that have pointed out many many lies Newsome presented as facts during the debate. Those saying he won live in the same fantasy land as trans people.

This debate was over before it started.

DeSantis was the best Governor in the country handling covid. There are liberals that agree with that sentiment including Bill Maher. He protected seniors but left the state open for business.

Florida is the fasting growing state in the nation. People from all over the country are moving to Florida. Why?

They have a governor that protects it children by protecting parents' rights. And investing in teachers by devoting 29 billion for pre-k - 20 education. Florida's schools were rated #1 in nation for higher education.

Florida's labor force growth rate is more than double the nation average 3.4 vs 1.5.

Florida's unemployment rate has declined to 2.6% lowest of the top 10 largest states.

In the uncertain early weeks of the pandemic, DeSantis closed public schools and kept them closed for the rest of that academic year. He ordered Floridians to stay at home and closed nonessential business on March 29, 2020, urging Floridians to stay “spiritually together, but to remain socially distant.”

What about the actual debate makes you think DeSantis came out the victor? We've already brought up the notion that it was on Fox News, moderated by Hannity, who lobbed soft balls to DeSantis, and despite that, his polling AMONG REPUBLICANS is still really bad in the primaries.

So I am curious to see where you think he won the debate.

Let me ask you this. Do you think it is Republican's fault that California has homeless camps all over the place?

Do you think it is Republicans fault that gas prices are well over $5.00 a gallon in California?

Do you think it is Republican's fault that Crime is rampant in LA and SF and that teen mob's rob stores in flash mob's?

Do you think that inflation is so bad that Big mac'S cost $18.00 in some California counties?

DeSantis brought up quite a few of these points during the debate and Newsome dogged and deflected the truth. I don't know how anyone with this kind of record could win a debate unless you live in the same fantasy land as the trns people do.

Not to mention California tried to recall Newsom so clearly there are a lot of residents who feel he isnt good for their state.

So you bring up things that had nothing to do with the debate..... again.

DeSantis hit on every one of those topics during the debate. He also hit on every one of the achievements I mentioned from his state of Florida. I understand though facts do not matter to snowflakes only feelings.

Most of those achievements were accomplished and those policies set in place by former Florida governors and not "his accomplishments" at all. He did manage to crush the myth that Republicans are pro business by attacking and staring a war with Disney because they didn't approve of his policies. So if you consider pettiness and vindictiveness a great leadership trait I'll give you that one. He did get take over liberal colleges so they couldn't teach the classes they wanted to. He did manage to install people in charge of education which now teach their children that slaves benefited from slavery. So there is a record you can be proud of.

Use your talking points. He stepped up for parents' rights. Nothing more nothing less. He did not change history. He stood up against wokeness that should never be taught to children. It is incredible that people would want prayer and religion out of schools but allow wokeness. Wake up before it is too late!

DeSantis is running against Trump. I understand polls say he is going to lose. I hope he doesn't. I don't dislike Trump but would rather have Desantis or Haley. But I would vote for Trump before a Democrat. I'm sorry but there is a long list of villains I would vote for before a Democrat. Those problems in California are all squarely on Democratic policies. What is happening in Chicago, New York, etc... all Democratic policies. Inflation Democratic policies. Confusion in one's sex/gender. Democratic policies. Satan is the author of confusion. No wonder most people that transition end up committing suicide. The problem that no one is telling them is that doctors cannot create working sex organs. They become dead down there. Bad choices. It starts with choosing Democrats.
