GOP House member tells Uganda to ‘stand firm’ in face of opposition to anti-gay law

Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) in October remarks said Ugandan leaders, including President Yoweri Museveni, should “stand firm” in the face of international outrage over the passage of a law criminalizing same-sex conduct, including potentially the death penalty for individuals convicted of “aggravated homosexuality.”

“Whose side do we want to be on?” Walberg asked during Uganda’s National Prayer Breakfast on Oct. 8. “God’s side. Not the World Bank; not the United States of America necessarily; not the U.N. God’s side.”

“Your esteemed president, his excellency President Museveni, needs a nation that stands with him and says, though the rest of the world is pushing back on you, though there are other major countries that are trying to get into you and ultimately change you, stand firm,” Walberg added.

Museveni, who signed Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act in May, later said Walberg’s remarks show there are Americans who “think like us.”

Homosexuality was already illegal in Uganda, but the new law’s harsh penalties have drawn widespread condemnation from human rights groups and international political leaders on both sides of the aisle. In June, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) called the law “horrific & wrong.”

Walberg’s remarks, which were first reported by TYT, have also drawn swift outrage, which the congressman during the October event said he anticipated.

“This will probably get back to the national media in the United States, and I expect some pushback,” Walberg said at the time. “But I’m not going to give in.”

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), one of 11 openly LGBTQ members of Congress, in a Thursday post on X, formerly known as Twitter, called Walberg’s support of the Uganda law “disgusting.”

“News that House Republican Tim Walberg traveled to Uganda to support their anti-gay bill, including the death penalty, is disgusting,” Garcia wrote. “Tim, do you think the government should execute me and my 11 fellow gay Members of Congress because we are LGBTQ?”

Walberg’s office said reports that characterized his remarks as support for the law were inaccurate.

“Congressman Walberg never endorsed any legislation or law while in Uganda,” his office said in an emailed statement.

“He did call out the World Bank for repeatedly holding Uganda, a Christian nation, to a different standard than much of the rest of the world,” the statement continued. “There is an undeniable double standard where other nations, like Afghanistan, receive uncriticized support from the World Bank. Global organizations, like the World Bank, should adhere to their mission and fiduciary duty to help bring economic prosperity to developing countries.”

“This is just one example of a growing trend of global organizations abandoning their duties and missions to pursue a political agenda and Congressman Walberg will continue to speak against this trend, even when it comes with gross mischaracterizations and inaccuracies,” his office said.

His office is basically saying "He did not say what he said".

Republicans are the only ones that seem to be ‘catching queer’ when exposed to all things LGBTQ. Funny how many of them gay bash only to be caught GAY AF later on… you can’t make this crap up. Maybe they should put their noses back in their own bedrooms…

And I highly suspect he doesn't stand a dogs chance in hell of ever being elected again in Ohio for any position as a result.

Nebraska governor stands firm on rejection of federal money to feed food-insecure children
MARGERY A. BECK
Fri, December 29, 2023 at 4:39 PM EST·3 min read

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska's Republican governor on Friday reiterated his rejection of $18 million in federal funding to help feed children who might otherwise go hungry while school is out.

Nebraska will not participate in the 2024 Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children — or Summer EBT — program, Gov. Jim Pillen said in a written statement. That statement came as advocates for children and low-income families held a news conference outside the Governor’s Mansion in Lincoln to call on Pillen to change his mind before the Jan. 1 deadline to sign up for the program.

The program — part of federal assistance made available during the COVID-19 pandemic — would provide pre-loaded EBT cards to families whose children are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches at school. Those families would receive $40 per eligible child per month over the summer. The cards can be used to buy groceries, similar to how SNAP benefits are used.

“COVID-19 is over, and Nebraska taxpayers expect that pandemic-era government relief programs will end too," Pillen said in his statement. Pillen announced on Dec. 19 that Nebraska would not participate in the program. He has drawn a firestorm of criticism for later defending that stance at a news conference by saying, “I don't believe in welfare."

Neighboring Iowa is also opting out of the program, with Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds announcing that decision last week and saying, “An EBT card does nothing to promote nutrition at a time when childhood obesity has become an epidemic.”

States that participate in the federal program are required to cover half of the administrative costs, which would cost Nebraska an estimated $300,000. Advocates of the program note that the administrative cost is far outweighed by the $18 million benefit, which the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates would benefit 175,000 Nebraska children who might otherwise go hungry on some days during the summer.

Advocacy group Nebraska Appleseed on Friday delivered a petition bearing more than 6,100 signatures from 230 communities across Nebraska calling on the state to utilize the federal Summer EBT program. Many of those who signed the petition also included comments expressing how much the program is needed, especially in light of multi-year inflation that has outpaced many household incomes.

“Everything is expensive," wrote one mother from Bruno, a small rural town in eastern Nebraska. “I’m a single mom who works full time, and my budget is already spread so thin. My son plays sports, and as a growing boy, he could practically eat a hole through the wall; it feels like it never stops. The extra money for food would free up money for things like bills and savings, and car maintenance.”

Pillen insisted Friday that the state would continue to help food-insecure children through the Summer Food Service Program, which provides meals and snacks at various sites when school is not in session. Providing on-site services also allows providers to spot and report issues like malnutrition, neglect and abuse in children, he said.

But critics say not all families have access to the on-site programs — particularly in Nebraska's vast rural stretches, where sites can be many miles away from a struggling family.

“No kid ever said, ‘I want to be born into a family that struggles,’” said Jenni Benson, president of the Nebraska State Education Association — the state's largest teachers union. “Why would we even question that people and children deserve food?"

Preston Love Jr,, a longtime community advocate in Omaha, on Friday questioned whether Pillen was bowing to political pressure in rejecting the federal funding.

“I know the governor a little bit, and he seems to be a reasonable man. He's a man who is compassionate in conversation,” Love said. “This is out of character. So, obviously, he's not following his heart. He's following his politics. He's falling victim to political posturing, and there's no excuse for that when it comes to children.”

As of Friday, 28 other states and six other U.S. territories and Native American tribes had confirmed their participation, according to the USDA.

Sounds bad. I'd like to read the bill to see what else was in it, and maybe that will turn out to be the reason it was rejected. Bills from congress address so many multiple things, i.e. "we'll give you this, but you have to do this, and that, " etc.

It doesn’t matter what else is in the bill. Feeding the poor is just a handout in the eyes of Gopers. They will never stand for that. Pffft Gopers.

I think his approach is reasonable.

Like he said, it sounds bad, like most of us would agree. Passing off an aid program for kids as a way to route special interest money that potentially does very little to nothing to solve the hunger (other than naming the bill as such) is a potentially despicable act in and of itself. I see it in the defense industry all the time.

That being said, I do lean heavily toward the Governor being in the wrong here, and this is why. If there was some sort of bad rationale or nefarious intentions, I would think that to be a lot easier to point out from his vantage point rather than going with something like “COVID is over” or “I don’t believe in welfare.” That’s a bad look and I would hope he would be smarter than that, from either a political or a policy perspective.

I have yet to hear them spell out what those "strings are" but it has never seemed to stop them from accepting federal money until now. And on a further note they have just passed school vouchers so parents can use vouchers to send kids to private schools. So when you combine the refusal of federal funds along with the voucher system, that's probably over 2 billion they would be taking out of the public school system.

Now Haley and DeSantis have announced they would pardon trump "for the good of the country."

Sure forget the fact he broke the law 97 times.

It is for the good of the country to show its citizens that as long as you are rich and connected you are above the law.

Let trump live out his life on an estate for attempting to overthrow a valid election. Stealing government documents. Backing a fake elector scheme and pressuring
a government official to subvert the vote count. As well as committing fraud in order to cheat on taxes and receive favorable loans.

Then there is that rape charge but let's not count that.

Lmao, Adam Kinzinger, describes Trump as having a foul odor about him. He said to mix armpit, ketchup, butt, and makeup in a blender and bottle it as cologne… that’s Trump’s signature scent… Can’t make this crap up!

No matter what he does they don't care. His statement about being able to shoot someone on Fifth Ave. and not losing a single vote is beginning to look quite accurate. But then there's always Hunter Biden. Am I right?

South Carolina Republican Party Political Director and Her Mom Charged With Assault

A political director of South Carolina’s Republican Party was arrested along with her mom after they allegedly assaulted someone at a bar, according to a report. Braylee Estep, 22, and her 53-year-old mother Michele Stalvey Estep were both charged with third-degree assault and battery by a mob this week, according to The State. The pair and a third person were allegedly involved in an incident at Stalvey’s Watering Hole—a bar owned by the Estep family—in Conway on Dec. 23. An arrest warrant reportedly claims that Braylee and Michele repeatedly struck the victim with their hands causing injuries, and that one of the suspects used a Stanley cup to dent the vehicle in which the victim was ultimately able to flee and call police.

At this juncture my only question would be if Kid Rock was playing at this bar at the time? I mean if anything could have set the mood for this it would have been him using an automatic weapon shooting up a 12 pack of Bud Light.

Some select excerpts:

20 governments, including China and Saudi Arabia, paid at least $7.8 million during Trump's presidency to business entities that included Trump International Hotels in Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas, and Trump Towers in New York

"While the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was making these payments, President Trump chose Saudi Arabia as the destination of his first overseas trip -- a choice that was unprecedented among U.S. presidents," the report says.

Florida venue cancels Marjorie Taylor Greene event after learning of its Jan. 6 focus
Matt Dixon
Thu, January 4, 2024 at 8:50 PM EST·2 min read

A central Florida venue has canceled an event that was to have featured Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., after it learned the event was intended to commemorate the third anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The event was set to be hosted by the Republican Party of Osceola County at the Westgate Resorts in Kissimmee. It was originally pitched to Westgate as a small book-signing event featuring Greene, without mention of Jan. 6.

“Please be advised that Westgate was not made aware of the purpose of this event when we were approached to host a book signing,” Westgate Resorts said in a statement. “This event has been canceled and is no longer taking place at our resort.”

A spokeswoman for Greene did not reply to a request seeking comment.

The event, which was first reported by NBC News, was touted to local Republicans as an “Exclusive event with Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene" at Westgate Resorts, according to an event invitation.

The event details said the "Occasion" was the “3rd Anniversary of Jan 6.”

The cost to attend was $45 to $1,000 to meet Greene and "receive a signed copy of her book.”

Greene has long supported former President Donald Trump's belief that the 2020 election was stolen from him, and she has downplayed the severity of the Jan. 6 attack — which left five people dead and about 140 police officers injured. In 2022, Greene said that had she organized the events that day, the rioters would have "won" and been "armed."

“I want to tell you something: If Steve Bannon and I had organized that, we would have won, not to mention, it would have been armed," she said. Greene later said her comments were "sarcasm."

The prospect of an event commemorating Jan. 6 drew immediate pushback from Democrats in the state.

“Just another day in Florida where the local Republican Party in Osceola County is hosting an 'anniversary' event to mark January 6th and Marjorie Taylor Green is the 'special' guest,” Democratic state Rep. Anna Eskamani posted on X. “Was really hoping this was a joke when I first saw it.”

Osceola County Republican Party Chairman Mark Cross did not reply to a request seeking comment, so it is unclear whether the event has been rescheduled.

I think sadly the only thing that surprises me about that article is that there is a resort in central Florida, that is not related to Disney or Universal.

Honestly, though, the woman is beyond abhorrent.

It’s up to congress to say if he can keep it. I believe Lincoln received money or something from the King of Siam. Congress forced him to turn it over to the American people. The precedent has been set.

Trump owes US 7.8 mil he’ll never pay. Ever.

Latest example of why Trump can never be President again-- in Iowa, he called for his supporters to stay in voting booths- and "prevent bags of crap" from voting. Now, I ask you, how American is that?, how Christian is it to call another human being/s "bags of crap"----love your neighbor as yourself--- guess the Donald shows again he has no concept of what America and being a Christian stands for. Pray for us and him, because we all desperately need pray. Happy New Year and reflect on what happened today, Jan 6, and make sure it never happens again.

Wayne LaPierre resigns as NRA leader, days before start of his civil trial

LaPierre and three other current and former NRA leaders are facing a lawsuit that alleges they violated nonprofit laws and misused NRA funds to finance their lavish lifestyles.

Wayne LaPierre resigned as leader of the National Rifle Association on Friday, ending his decadeslong reign over the prominent gun rights group, days before the start of his civil trial in New York.

In announcing his departure, LaPierre, the organization’s executive vice president, said he has been a “card-carrying member” of the NRA for most of his adult life and that he would “never stop supporting the NRA and its fight to defend Second Amendment freedom.”

“My passion for our cause burns as deeply as ever,” LaPierre said in a statement.

Fox News Digital, which first reported the resignation, said the 74-year-old cited health reasons for his exit, which will take effect Jan. 31.

He has led the NRA for more than 30 years.

LaPierre and three other current and former NRA leaders are fending off a lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James in 2020 that alleges they violated nonprofit laws and misused millions of dollars of NRA funds to finance lavish lifestyles for themselves.

LaPierre announced his resignation Friday afternoon as jury selection neared an end.

James touted his exit as “an important victory.”

“LaPierre’s resignation validates our claims against him, but it will not insulate him from accountability,” she said in a statement. “We look forward to presenting our case in court.”

The lawsuit alleges that LaPierre diverted millions of dollars away from the group’s charitable mission for his personal use of private jets, expensive meals, travel consultants, private security, and trips to the Bahamas for him and his family.

The attorney general claims LaPierre spent more than $500,000 of the NRA’s assets to fly himself and his family members to the Bahamas. From May 2015 to April 2019, the NRA incurred over $1 million in expenses for private flights in which LaPierre was not a passenger, according to the lawsuit.

LaPierre received more than $1.2 million in expense reimbursements from 2013 to 2017, the lawsuit alleges.

The other defendants are also accused of violating nonprofit laws and internal policies as they enriched themselves, the suit says, contributing to the NRA’s loss of more than $64 million in three years.

They are Wilson “Woody” Phillips, a former NRA treasurer and chief financial officer; Joshua Powell, a former chief of staff and executive director of general operations; and John Frazer, the corporate secretary and general counsel.

In a court filing Thursday, Powell, who is representing himself, indicated that he is attempting to settle the case against him. The attorney general’s office declined to comment on Powell.

The civil trial in Manhattan is expected to begin Monday and will last six weeks.

Six members of the jury will be tasked with determining whether the defendants violated nonprofit laws. If the jurors find the defendants liable, they will recommend the amount of money that each defendant would have to repay the NRA.

In that outcome, state Supreme Court Judge Joel Cohen would have the final say over monetary damages and remedies, including whether the defendants should be permanently barred from serving on the board of any charity in New York and whether an independent monitor should oversee the NRA’s finances.

The attorney general is seeking both remedies, which Cohen would decide on during a second phase of the trial.

I was once a member of the NRA. At that time they were all about gun safety and education. Once they turned into nothing more than a lobbying group and political faction I no longer remained a member.

FEC fines Marjorie Taylor Greene $12,000 for illegal PAC fundraising

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) fined Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene $12,000 (R-Ga.) for alleged illegal PAC fundraising, according to a recently-published conciliation agreement.

The FEC said Greene violated Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 (FECA), for “soliciting non-federal” funds by reposting an advertisement she appeared in on her official Greene for Congress social media accounts. The advertisement was for political action committee (PAC) “Stop Socialism Now PAC.”

The PAC posted the advertisement on its website, YouTube and social media feeds in December 2020. The video featured Greene speaking about the 2021 Senate runoff elections in her home state, which eventually resulted in the election of Democratic Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff to their current seats, according to the conciliation agreement.

In the video, Greene attempted to raise money for the PAC’s efforts to keep Ossoff and Warnock from winning the seats.

“Stop Socialism Now PAC will stop Ossoff and Warnock from stealing our Senate seats,” Greene said in the ad, according to the agreement. “It’s time to fight back now, before it’s too late.

FECA prohibits “federal candidates and officeholders, their agents, and entities directly or indirectly established, financed, maintained or controlled by or acting on behalf of federal candidates and officeholders, from soliciting funds in connection with a federal election ‘unless the funds are subject to the limitations, prohibitions, and reporting requirements of the Act.'”

The FEC alleged that by reposting the advertisement in which she requests contributions through on-screen text, her plea to “make a contribution today” in the video and via a web address for the donation webpage, she solicited non-federal funds.

The FEC accepted the agreement in early December, and Greene had 30 days after it became “effective” to comply with it.

Since she was first elected in 2020, Greene has become a well-known and controversial figure in American politics. Earlier this week, a Florida resort canceled an event with her that would’ve occurred on the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

“Please be advised that Westgate was not made aware of the purpose of this event when we were approached to host a book signing,” the resort said in an emailed statement. “This event has been cancelled and is no longer taking place at our resort.”

Trump Calls On Supporters To Put A Stop To 'Bags Of Crap' Arriving At Polling Places

Sat, January 6, 2024 at 9:10 AM EST·2 min read

Former President Donald Trump on Friday urged his supporters to put a stop to “bags of crap” arriving at polling places during this year’s election.

At a rally in Mason City, Iowa, Trump echoed his false claims that the 2020 election had been stolen from him, and said that “we’re not going to let it happen again.”

He added: “You should all stay in those voting booths. You should stay there and watch it. If you see bags of crap coming into the voting areas, you’ve got to stop it. You can’t let it happen, because these guys are crooked as hell. They know how to cheat.”

Trump, the current front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination, went on to declare that he and his backers wouldn’t allow Democrats to “rig” the 2024 election.

“We will fight for America like no one has ever fought before,” Trump said at the rally, held in advance of this month’s Iowa caucuses. “2024 is our final battle.”

His comments arrive after he told supporters at a previous Iowa rally to “guard the vote” during the election.

“You should go into Detroit and you should go into Philadelphia and you should go into some of these places, Atlanta, and you should go into some of these places and we’ve got to watch those votes when they come in,” the former president said last month.

Susan Benesch, who runs a research group called the Dangerous Speech Project, told The Associated Press at the time that Trump’s remarks suggested that the election’s outcome is “foregone.”

“Is it actually guarding the election against fraud, or is it guarding the election against a result in which Trump is not declared the winner?” she asked.

Trump made similar calls prior to the 2020 election when, during a presidential debate that year, he urged supporters to watch polling places and warned of “bad things” happening in Philadelphia.

Critics on X (formerly Twitter) reacted to Trump’s latest rally remarks, alleging that the former president was engaging in “voter intimidation” in the months leading up to Election Day.

First he told them to fight like hell or they wouldn't have a country left before he told them to go to the capital and now he's telling them not to let democrats vote. What a scum bag. But he's the republican front runner. That in itself speaks volumes. What used to be the party of personal accountability has turned into the party of excuses for the words and deeds of a a vile human being as their leader.

Trump shares bizarre video declaring 'God made Trump,' suggesting he is embracing a messianic image

Donald Trump shared a video declaring that God made him to lead the country.

The fan-made video frames Trump as a messianic figure and a workaholic.

Polls show many evangelical Christians believe God anointed him to rule.

Former President Donald Trump shared a bizarre fan-made video on Truth Social, which declared that he was divinely chosen to lead the country.

"And on June 14, 1946, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, 'I need a caretaker.' So God gave us Trump," the video starts.

The narrator goes on to frame Trump as a messianic figure who was created by God to "fight the Marxists" and "call out the fake news for their tongues as sharp as a serpent's."

Trump has long had a solid base of support among evangelical Christians in the United States, and polls show that a high portion believes that God anointed him to rule — even though he has never suggested having any strong personal faith.

Trump's sharing of the video suggests that he fully embraces the role ahead of the 2024 election.

The video describes Trump's supposed strengths, including his "arms strong enough to rustle the Deep State and yet gentle enough to deliver his own grandchild." It's not clear which of his grandchildren Trump is meant to have delivered.

The video also describes Trump as a workaholic who worked all hours of the night while president.

His work ethic was a source of debate during his time in office, particularly after his private schedules were leaked, showing that half of his scheduled time was unstructured.

The video also claimed that Trump attended church services every Sunday despite no evidence of this.

Last year, former Vice-President Mike Pence, well-known to be a deeply religious evangelical Christian, ridiculed Trump's religious devotion during his remarks at the annual Gridiron Dinner.

Pence joked that he had "once invited President Trump to a Bible study," calling it "an experience," according to The Washington Post.

"I read that some of those classified documents they found in Mar-a-Lago were actually stuck in the president's Bible," Pence said, referencing the ongoing saga of investigations into Trump. "Which proves he had absolutely no idea they were there."

The Dilley 300 Meme Team made the latest adulatory video, which is not directly affiliated with the Trump campaign but makes pro-Trump videos that he often shares on social media

It just goes to show that it doesn't take a lot of effort to deceive the most gullible among us.

If I hadn't lived through the past 6 years, I'd swear this like came from an Onion article.

I'm not sure that resigning from the NRA relieves him of responsibility of his actions.

What is wrong with people that agree with him? He wants to stop Americans that don't agree with him from voting. And his supporters think that's just fine.

That is the most disgusting video ever. Let's see his supporters support that.

There are some repulsive people in this world.

It just so happens the most repulsive one is the leader of the republican party.

Anyone supporting him needs to look into a mirror and ask. "Do you want a dictatorship?"

Setting the stage for what will happen if trump loses.... again.....

Stefanik won’t commit to certifying 2024 election results

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) on Sunday stopped short of saying she will certify the 2024 election results, saying she will “see” if this year’s election is “legal and valid.”

Pressed on NBC News’s “Meet the Press” over whether she will vote to certify the 2024 election results no matter what the result is, Stefanik said, “We will see if this is a legal and valid election.”

The question was sparked after Stefanik’s comments earlier in the interview when she discussed why she objected to certifying Pennsylvania’s 2020 election results on Jan. 6, 2021.

“I stood up for election integrity, and I challenged and objected to the certification of the state of Pennsylvania because of the unconstitutional overreach,” Stefanik said. “I absolutely stand by my floor speech. I am proud to support President Trump.”

In Stefanik’s House floor speech on Jan. 6, she argued Pennsylvania’s State Supreme Court and secretary of state “unilaterally and unconstitutionally rewrote election law” by eliminating signature-matching requirements.

She repeated those claims Sunday, telling NBC News moderator Kristen Welker, “Well, I voted not to certify the state of Pennsylvania because, as we saw in Pennsylvania and other states across the country, that there was unconstitutional acts circumventing the state Legislature and unilaterally changing election law.”

Stefanik was among 147 Republicans in Congress who voted to sustain objections to either one or both of Pennsylvania and Arizona election results.

Welker said she didn’t hear Stefanik commit to certifying the election results and asked her, “Will you only commit to certifying the results if former President Trump wins? Does that mean if former President Trump wins?”

“No, it means if they’re constitutional,” Stefanik said. “What we saw in 2020 was unconstitutional circumventing of the Constitution, not going through state legislators when it comes to changing election law.”

“We are seeing Democrats try to steal the election and illegally gerrymander congressional districts that we fairly won and are fair lines. So, I see this at a very local level as well as the unconstitutional overreach we saw at the national level in 2020,” she added.

Stefanik, a steadfast supporter of Trump, also referenced the two rulings from Colorado and Maine that aim to boot the former president from each state’s primary ballot.

“What we’re seeing so far is that Democrats are so desperate, they’re trying to remove President Trump from the ballot. That is a suppression of the American people. And the Supreme Court is taking that case up in February. That should be a 9-0 to allow President Trump to appear on the ballot, because that’s the American people’s decision to make this November,” Stefanik said.

Decisions in Colorado and Maine would remove Trump from their 2024 state primary ballots, ruling he is not eligible for the presidency under the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause. Trump appealed the Colorado Supreme Court decision to the U.S. Supreme Court, which will hear his case next month.

Maine’s decision, from state Secretary of State Shenna Bellows (D), was appealed in state court, though that case could also reach the nation’s highest court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority.

Several lawmakers on the right have argued the ballot decisions are an attempt by Democrats to prevent Trump from taking back the White House in 2024.

They will try to steal the 2024 elections by any means and using any lies possible. Just like they did in 2020.
