I always tip in cash and write "cash" on the tip line. That way they can't add numbers to a zero or the blank line.

Hmm well crap, I think I've been doing that wrong now that you bring that up.. when I get stellar service, I tip in cash so the Feds can't tax them onnit if they dont wanna report it. I think what I've been doing is leaving that line blank..

Hmm.. I don't want to write cash because that defeats what I'm trying to do for the server.. maybe I should put double X's there?

Put a O with a vertical line through it. That's pretty much standard from what I know.

Well, my thinking has always been that they could say I gave them $1 instead of $15 if they like, but they can't rip me off. Guess I could write out ZERO and really look like a putz.

Actually, if you put the number 0 as far to the left as you can just like you do when writing out a CHECK then they can't put something in front of it. (or even put the actual number then write out zero they can't change that)

And if they can memorize my address in that time, more power to them.

Same w/ me. I let them see it just long enough to see my pic and to see my sig on it and boom, it's back in my pocket.

The easiest way to protect yourself against credit card fraud or id theft for that matter, is to simply contact all 3 credit bureaus and have your credit frozen. It costs about 10 bucks and and you have to mail in some info. However, nobody has any access to your personal info. whatsoever. If you need to seek a loan approval you can unfreeze your credit info. for a 24 hr. period in order to get approved.

In essence, you could give a stranger your ssn # and it wouldn't matter because accts. cannot be opened, closed, accessed etc.... while your credit is frozen. Best way to go in my opinion. No id theft concerns at all..

If that seems too much of a pain....just pay cash. There is no need to swipe a credit card for a purchase of minimal amount.

I don't find it to be a big deal, most people cannot glance at a license and get that information saved into memory, and continue checking out other customers before writing it down.

Keyword = MOST. Some people can do this, and do.

Who needs to memorize it???

This is just one of many that are out there nowadays.........no need to memorize the info when you can take a pic of it!!!!!!

Actually, they aren't a scam if you use them properly. If you go to buy a house, or a car, they like to see a GOOD credit report. If you don't use credit, it's much harder to get a loan and you get much crapier rates.

Once you have that house, and that car, you don't need the credit cards. Those two big ticket items will keep your score very high as long as you pay them on time.

It helps, but it's better to have a diversified credit portfolio. For example, my scores stay a bit lower because my name isn't on a mortgage. I have my installment car loan and my credit cards, but the mortgage would bump me up quite a bit.

Just food for thought.

just clicking...

I can't even begin to tell any of you my feeling on thieves without getting banned from this board.

I work my arse off for my money and everything I have.

Thieves are just about the lowest of the low.

I look at CB's all day long Those with the highest scores all have a mortage payment and a history of auto loans. The only ones that the credit cards make much difference on are the ones with screwed up cards (late payments, charge offs) which kill them. The ones with one or two cards with a high limit or little to no balance. (ups the score) or the ones with several credit cards with high limits (this hurts your score) or with high balances on them (this also hurts your score)

BTW The score only sets your rate on loans, it doesn't mean you will be approved or turned down for a loan.

Hey Michelle why do you mind if a merchant asks you for id if I can ask ? Sorry if you already said it before. It seems like I'm asked to show ID often,I look like a criminal I guess

GM...I agree credit cards aren't necessary for the most part. I use them for online purchases and restaurants typically. For the reason that you are only liable for up to $50 if your id happened to be stolen.

To repeat, the best prevention is to have your credit frozen. Nobody needs to put a pack of cigs and potato chips on their credit card as I have that seen many times at the gas station. What happened to cash purchases??

I rarely carry much cash anymore. Maybe a couple of bucks ...... but carrying my debit card and a credit card are much safer than walking around with a few hundred bucks in my pocket to go to the store. Even for trips to the gas station ........ (or ... with the price of gas today ...... maybe especially the gas station) it's just easier to put it on the debit or credit card. It's usually faster as well. Plus ..... especially at holiday time ..... I'm not opening a wallet full of cash in front of potential robbers.

Agreed. Plus I get 5% back at grocery store, gas stations, and pharmacies... or earn airline miles depending on which card I use. Pay off the balance and its free... Cash is a waste of time for the most part anymore.

Actually, his answer was spot on. It's very easy to give someone TOO much information when they ask for ID. Thankfully Ohio went to the social security number optional driver's license...most states don't include them anymore. Yet, it's still easier for a would be theif to get your info if they have your address. I realize 99% of people aren't going to be theives, but the 1% that is can KMA. I'm not showing ID when I hand them a valid card, end of story. I just started this thread in case others care about their identities. It looks like many don't.

Thanks...I'm aware of how it works. I'm just saying that good credit card usage (utilization between 1-9% is usually the best thing for your scores).

Also, I was turned down for a car loan for my scores. They told me flat out. Had nothing to do with my DTI. (Trust me, they were LOW before I started working on them.)

Debit cards are one of the easiest ways to have your id stolen. You have little recourse with your bank and could take months and months to get it straightened out if your id was stolen. If you don't carry cash, I would certainly stick with a credit card and then obviously just pay it off at the end of every month.

j/c to add a story that ran today...do you guys see why checking ID does absolutley ZERO good??

Credit-card fraud charges stack up
Third time no charm for man arrested on charges of repeatedly using bogus credit card.

Date published: 1/3/2008

BY KEITH EPPS

A man accused of purchasing more than $2,000 worth of camera equipment with a phony credit card was arrested Friday on charges of trying to do the same thing two more times, police said.

Fredericksburg police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the man made the initial purchase about 11 a.m. at Ritz Camera in Central Park.

The credit card he presented wouldn't scan, Bledsoe said, but a store employee completed the transaction manually.

The buyer had identification that matched the name on the credit card, police said. That turned out to be bogus, too, Bledsoe said.

The same man returned to the store later that afternoon and tried to make a $4,000 purchase with the same card.

The employee contacted a manager this time, and the manager called the credit-card company and learned that the card was fraudulent.

The suspect had left the store by the time the discovery was made, Bledsoe said. But he showed up at the Ritz Camera in nearby Spotsylvania Towne Centre a short time later and tried to make yet another purchase.

The store had been alerted, and Spotsylvania deputies took the man into custody.

The man initially refused to give his name, but police later identified him as 41-year-old Rene Resek of New York.

He is facing a total of 18 fraud-related charged in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania. Resek is being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

You know ...... if I wanted to, I could probably make a fairly legitimate looking ID on the computer.

How hard is it anymore to scan a license in ...... and pop a new name on it. Just don't take it out of your wallet when you show it .....

Man ... I'm scaring myself now.

yes, fake ID's are relatively easy to make/get. but this man obviously physically stole a card.

If the CC company knew it was stolen, then why doesn't it come up in the screen when they swipe it? It would seem that would be the quickest way to catch these thieves. Like the check machines they use at stores that scan the account number and check it against a stolen or closed account register.

America is way behind in this type of technology.

It would come up stolen (or some other warning) if the rightful cardholder has reported it stolen. Maybe they didn't know the card was missing yet.

I Misread it, it said it was fraudulent, meaning it was probably made up with a random number, hoping it would go through and they would be long gone before it was noticed.
