Link I searched to see if anybody had posted on this topic and came up empty so here is a little look at who might be changing teams before we know it. December means a portion of the nation's fans begin to ramp up readying for their team's playoff run. But the rest of the nation is left to sit and dream about next season. What kind of moves will their teams make in the off-season so they aren't left out in the cold come December 2008? He's the man! FOXSports.com readers know no NFL secret is safe from Jay Glazer, and now others know it too. Check out the latest honor he picked up. In an attempt to help out those ever-faithful and their abounding optimism that '07 was simply a fluke, I've compiled a list of the top 20 unrestricted free agents on the open market. Some will get the dreaded franchise tag, while others will re-up with their teams. But still, despite the constant stream of players willing to re-up before their contracts expire, this year's list is surprisingly deep — at least in the top 20 or so. The following list also does not count restricted free agents such as Browns QB Derek Anderson, nor does it include those who will become free if their teams reject paying a roster or option bonus. This list consists of players slated to be UFAs or who can void their current deals by having already hit certain incentives. 1. Colts safety Bob Sanders — A bona fide difference-maker and game-changer. Sanders is a big play waiting to happen and earlier this year seemed a lock for Defensive Player of the Year. During last year's Super Bowl run, Indy's defense couldn't stop a nose from running ... until Sanders returned from injury. Suddenly, they were a totally different ballclub. For teams unable to land him, the Giants' Gibril Wilson, Dallas' Ken Hamlin and Patriots' Eugene Wilson would add immediate impact at the safety position. 2. Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen — Pass rushers are at a premium in this league and Allen has been virtually unstoppable this year. Missed two games early due to DWIs but has cleaned up his act. He says he hasn't had a drink in over a year and adamantly insists he has zero desire to ever have another drink again. Young up-and-coming pass rushers get paid in this league and Allen is on his way to a major check cashing. 3. Patriots WR Randy Moss — Maybe he's not the right fit for every team out there, but when he does find a fit he's proven to be unstoppable. Moss has been the most explosive offensive weapon in the NFL this season and it's hard to imagine the Patriots will not roll out the green carpet of cash for him. By the way, his WR mate Donte Stallworth has a huge $6 million bonus due this off-season that will likely cause the Pats to either re-do him as well or set him free. The rest of this year's WRs available are far from great but they have some bright prospects like Jerry Porter, Patrick Crayton, Bernard Berrian and Devery Henderson. 4. Steelers OG Alan Faneca — The best offensive lineman available via free agency, Faneca can play all over the line and has the leadership and attitude 32 out of 32 coaches would give their left arm to have. They may have to (plus sell a few other limbs) to come up with the cash that will land this stud. The offensive line as a whole is weak in this year's UFA class. Old vets like Larry Allen and Ruben Brown will be available and a guy like Miami's Rex Hadnot can play center or guard. 5. Patriots corner Asante Samuel — Like pass rushers, there's a premium on cover corners in this league and in a solid group available, Samuel is the best of the bunch. Unlike some cover corners, he's also solid against the run and is never afraid to deliver a blow. The Raiders' Nnamdi Asomugha and Seattle's Marcus Trufant round out a great top three. Considering what Nate Clements made last off-season, this trio should be about to hit a whole different financial world. Brian Kelly adds to this list. 6. Titans DT Albert Haynesworth — This may be a little high because of character concerns but actually a little low when talking about talent. Haynesworth has been a wrecking crew this year and when he was hurt, those around him clearly suffered. 7. Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha — Because of his talent, potential and position he moves up the list and resides in our top 10. 8. Bears LB Lance Briggs — The best LB on the open market. He's a perfect fit for a Tampa-Two defense but has the speed, athleticism and smarts to play in any system. Briggs is an explosive player, loved in the locker room and would provide an instant burst to any defense. Overall the linebackers in the open market are weak. 9. Ravens LB/DE Terrell Suggs — Remember what we said about pass rushers? Suggs is a proven commodity when it comes to making the life of a QB miserable. 10. Dallas OT Flozell Adams — Teams need solid tackles to protect against guys like Allen and Suggs, and Adams is the best on the list. A perennial Pro Bowler, Adams always seems like he should be more dominant but he's still more than solid. The lack of offensive line talent in the free-agent market has pushed him up our list. 11. Colts TE Dallas Clark — A solid weapon in the Colts offense, Clark is not a conventional tight end, which means he doesn't fit every system. However, in the systems he does fit in, he can cause fits for defensive schemes. The ultimate cover-2 buster, he'd be a huge loss to the Colts if he bolted. The Eagles' L.J. Smith is the best of the rest on this list. 12. Chargers QB Philip Rivers — Rivers is able to void his deal due to playing-time incentives he reached last year. There is a huge void of good QBs in this league and despite an inconsistent season, Rivers has shown enough to be a solid starter. Considering guys like Rex Grossman and Daunte Culpepper highlight, or lowlight, the list of UFAs at the position, Rivers' stock soars on our list. 13. Cowboys RB Julius Jones — Proven featured running backs are hard to come by for some teams. 14. Cincy DE Justin Smith — He made our list last year and despite the Bengals' struggles he's still a stud on the defensive line. 15. Seattle CB Marcus Trufant — See above talk of corners. William James and Drayton Florence add depth to this group and Denver's Dre Bly has a $9 million option which means he'll likely get cut free as well. 16. Dallas WR Patrick Crayton — He was tremendous this year filling in for the injured Terry Glenn and showed he's certainly worthy of a starting role. 17. Chargers RB Michael Turner — L.T.'s backup is held in very high regard by many personnel people throughout the league. Tennessee and Green Bay were interested him as an RFA and more should show him love as a UFA. The Browns' Jamal Lewis rounds out the RBs. 18. Giants safety Gibril Wilson — Michael Strahan once called Wilson "the best rookie I've ever played with." He wasn't a one-hit wonder and has been a very solid safety ever since. The Patriots' Eugene Wilson adds depth to this list along with the Browns' Gary Baxter. 19. Browns RB Jamal Lewis — He's shown he can still make noise, especially in cold-weather games. He's a bit older and obviously had off-field issues but he's still reliable down the stretch. 20. Eagles TE L.J. Smith — He's a young tight end who needs to stay healthy but has the talent to be a solid

Jared Allen and/or Justin Smith would be a solid upgrade....As would Adams on the OL , although I don't want to move Thomas from LT....So we need to Upgrade at RT & the DL across the board....Beyond that adding Quality Depth on both sides of the ball is critical to any future success IMHO.... ....

We don't have a first round pick.
About the list:
Many of those guys won't hit the market. And his rankings leave a lot to be desired. Guys like Trufant, Smith, and Turner are very good players and will be in demand---if they reach the market.

If we did, we would currently sit at #22.

It's funny each year when these "expert" lists come out, and fans get all googly-eyed like they are sitting on Santa's lap asking for this player and that player........and they are bummed out and surprised when said player gets re-signed by his own team.....

Right on, Shep.
Our OL played really well this year, so I'm not expecting too many changes there. The only one would maybe be RG with Tucker getting another year older. But, hopefully Bentley can come back and play at a high level. I'd love to have a Faneca, but you know he's going to demand (rightfully so) HUGE money, and we have enough money tied up in the OL, IMHO.
Our problem is defense, defense, defense. We need to get a strong DL, some guys who take up space, but can also cause disruption in the passing game.
I'd also like to see someone to compliment DQ in the linebacking corps (I just can't stand the way Andra Davis plays) and someone to put on pressure opposite Wimbley (Peek isn't bad, but he was banged up this year).
Didn't really see anyone (outside of Suggs) who interested me on that list.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Yup,,much like us resigning Jamal Lewis,,, same thing in reverse! I don't know why, but I am surpremly confident that it will get done.

Like the #1 guy on the list already signed an extension. Which also means that Indy will most likely use their franchise tag on another guy on the list- Dallas Clark. Smart move because franchising a TE doesnt cost much.
A few players that got tagged last year signed a contract that says that cant be tagged this year (Samual, Justin Smith and Briggs).
It would be huge to pry Justin Smith away from Cincy. He doesnt get big sack totals but that guy does it all. With all the egos on that team, he usually goes under the radar which might make him one of the most underrated players on the team (to people outside of the north division who dont know much about him). He plays DE in the 4-2 but he could be big enough to play in the 3-4. He should be an upgrade over the aging Roye.

some combo of Bears LB Lance Briggs, Ravens LB/DE Terrell Suggs, Cincy DE Justin Smith, Chargers RB Michael Turner, and maybe a safety. But we we can and should sign only 1-2 of these guys
the rest should coime from the draft.
one thing that struck me looking at the list was that we dont need much. So good to feel that! Dline, 1 backer (middle), 1 DE and a safety. We dont need a RB, but i'll take turner if can get him.

I don't think we'll get into any bidding wars over anyone..when I see the entire list it'll become clearer..a lot of those guys won't hit the market or will get gobbled up quickly..we may take a lower cost DE ..AND a solid LB... Then use the draft to reinforce what we get. Guess I can start looking at the draft sites..I've seen a lot of college games this year..

Only guy I want is Bernard Berrian...
if we don't get him, i really hope we draft Jordy Nelson of Kansas St. on day 2. He is going to be a Wes Welker, if not better, to the "T."

Here is the full order, just for FYI purposes:
Trades in () 1 Miami 2 St. Louis 3 Atlanta 4 Kansas City 5 Oakland 6 NY Jets 7 NE (SF) 8 Baltimore 9 Cincinnati 10 New Orleans 11 Buffalo 12 Denver 13 Carolina 14 Chicago 15 Detroit 16 Arizona 17 Minnesota 18 Houston 19 Philadelphia 20 Tampa Bay 21 Washington 22 Seattle 23 DAL (CLEVELAND) 24 Pittsburgh 25 Tennessee 26 NY Giants 27 San Diego 28 Jacksonville 29 Green Bay 30 Dallas 31 SF (IND) 32 NE(FORFEIT) If the draft were held today our picks would be:
(1) 22 - Traded to Dallas for #10 (2) 57 (3) 88 (4) 119 (6) 179 (6) 180 - Pick from Seattle for old #9 (CF) (7) 215
Our 5th rounder is sent to Philly for #66 (HF)
Of course this order could change IF: 1 - Tampa Bay (#20), or Washington (#21) get to the Superbowl and thus pick #30 or 31. (NOTE: New England lost its own 1st pick due to their peeping nature).
2 - When Supplemental picks are assigned, of which I doubt we get any this year, our later round picks will change of course.
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital. Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

Shep said it best...a lot of these guys won't hit the open market.
IMO the one with the best shot is Terrell Suggs.

Think I highlighted all the Browns.
Lots of good names on this list; and as mentioned lots of them will be either tagged or resigned by their current team.
Some DLinemen I would like us to look at:
Ryon Bingham San Diego RFA (7th round compensation, if he doesn't get tendered more).
Chris Canty Dallas RFA (4th round compensation, if he doesn't get tendered more - which he most likely will).
Jovan Haye Tampa Bay RFA (No comp, udfa)(Anyone remember this guy when he was on our PS a few years ago. Today he has 68 tackles, 6 sacks and 1 ff. Doubt TB lets him go with no compensation, but I'd like to get him back).
Tommy Kelly Oakland UFA - Spent most of the year on IR, so would have to make sure he was 100% or would be at least before signing.
Isaac Sopoaga San Francisco UFA - Played in SF 3-4, wasn't a huge factor, but could be this years Shaun Smith.
Randy Starks Tennessee UFA - Young with potential.
Craig Terrill Seattle UFA
Corey Williams Green Bay UFA - This is my current first choice. No comp necessary, great hustle, good numbers (35 tckls, 7 sacks, 3 FF, & 1 int); in 9 starts with a pretty good DL rotation in GB.
Mike Wright New England RFA (No compenstation, waiver wire pick up for NE)
Those are just my DL preferences, not all of them, but the top half. I don't think Jared Allen or Albert Haynesworth make it to FA, and probably a few others won't as well.
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital. Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

Yeah, but we're officially in time-killing mode now. Nothing to do but tick days off until the Senior Bowl, then the Super Bowl, then the Pro Bowl, then the Scouting Combine, then the start of Free Agency, then the big wait to get us to The Draft and finally some decent weather and the beginning of mini-camps. If it were only as easy as creating a shopping list: Haynesworth Briggs Suggs If the money isn't too big, Eugene Wilson That would be a nice start on fixing our D. *Maybe* gimme Turner for the O. It'd of course be fun as hell to have Winslow AND Dallas Clark as well
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

I could see guys like Suggs & Tommy Kelly being brought in.
Isn't Justin Smith a tad small to play in a 3-4?

Yes. He's too small to be a DE in a 3-4. Too bad he probably wouldn't want to convert to a LB. He'd be a beast in that role.

DL is weak........ all I see is Haynesworth and Allen, so what the hell, bring 'em in!
Jamal Lewis needs to be resigned TODAY.

Bat,, thanks for the list... very helpful
First off, guys that are on our roster that I think we gotta keep are:
Derek Anderson (if for no other reason than a high tender to see what we get) Jamal Lewis (need I explain why) Lennie Friedman (unless they find an upgrade to him) Ethan Kelly (again, unless we find an upgrade to him) Devon Holly (unless an upgrade is found) Chaun Thompson (unless and upgrad can be found)
Jamal and Derek are really the only expensive ones I would think.
I like Haynesworth but I'm worried about his head stomping incident.. Maybe I'm over reacting to it.
Terrell Suggs would be a monster for us........
That's all I see for the moment,, gotta do research on some others but don't have time now.

My shopping list from this list:
Re-sign
Jamal Lewis- I wasn't impressed that much in the first half of the year but he turned it up the second half and just mowed through defenses. His type of running epitomizes Browns football to me.
Seth McKinney G/C- Was solid til he was injured. Not great, but solid. I think Tucker has a pretty good grip on the right guard spot now but injuries happen and McKinney would make for a great backup.
Lennie Friedman G/C- Has always been underrated if you ask me. Is a respectable player with versatility. Keep for depth.
Chaun Thompson LB- Showed us more this year than any year previously, despite a reduction in playing time. Good spot player.
Ethan Kelley DT- Our D-Line needs a major overhaul but I thought Kelley was probably our best NT this year (not saying much I know). Shaun Smith was effective but I think he's better at a DE spot where he played for most of the year. Given the age of our DL and other folks we need to axe, we need to keep some depth.
Daven Holly- Still a diamond in the rough. Might end up being something good and is a quality nickelback even if he's not.
Derrick Anderson- Nice fat tender put on him--1st and a 3rd. If someone offers it, I'm still up in the air on whether to give him up or not.
Given walking papers
Tim Carter- Has speed but no moves and no hands.
Nat Dorsey- Better known for being fat than anything else. With Shaff being able to play both tackle spots, I don't feel to rough letting Dorsey walk.
Simon Fraser- I love Fraser...but not in a 3-4. He's just not stout enough. Put this guy in a 4-3 and he'll be twice as good.
Ted Washington- We should be hearing about his retirement any day I figure. He's just done physically.
Kris Griffin- Worked hard but can;t say I noticed him all that much. He's RFA so we may end up keeping him.
Matt Stewart- IR'ed all year and nothing special before that. With other young LBs looking for time, he's squeezed out.
Gary Baxter- Sorry Gary...I just don;t have the faith. You weren't all that quick before blowing your knees. I don't see how it will help matters. Good luck.
Ricardo Colclough- Former first rounder but doesn;t seem to have the head for the pro game. No special effort should be extended to keep him.
Now then, the shopping list
Nick Eason DE- I think it was a mistake to get rid of him. All effort player. Good for depth.
Albert Haynesworth DT- Throw the bank at this man. Would instantly make our defense better. Would constantly demand a doubleteam and even then is likely to collapse the pocket regularly. We NEED a dominant D-lineman.
David Macklin CB- Solid corner that can backup competantly and push Holly at the nickel.
Calvin Pace OLB- Hitting his prime at an OLB this year. As a 4-3 backer, had 7 sacks.... In a 3-4 with more opportunity to blitz, could be even better.
Bryant Johnson WR- Joey J ain;t gonna last forever. We had absolutely zero production apart from our big three... I'd like to bring in Johnson as our number 2 WR and move JJ to the slot and as a 3rd down specialist.

Agree on the who to re-sign from our own squad. I would add Fraser and Louis Leonard. Leonard only because of depth and we saw something to bring him in during the season, perhaps a full offseason with us will make him a keeper in the long-haul. I can't find the contract data (haven't looked too hard I must admit), but I think Charles Ali (FB) and Sorenson (S) are both going to be FA's as well, I bring both of them back as well.
Bringing all these guys back doesn't mean there still isn't a need, and that they couldn't be let go later on (Fraser, Sorenson, Leonard, etc). I want to bring back the good ones with experience in our locker room and system and add the upgrades as we can to build the team stronger.
Suggs would be a beast I agree. I don't think Balt can resign him, at least not currently, but he may get many other offers, ala Clements, and the bidding war should not get too out of hand to get him.
I am working on a list of about 25-30 guys I would like to see us get (not all of course, but if we don't get #1, move down the list to #2, and so forth.

I'd forgot to mention Bryant Johnson, (either this thread or another) but he is my #1 option at WR, then Drew Carter, then Bernard Berrian.

We don't have a first round pick. If we did, we would currently sit at #22.
Wow doesnt that make it an even trade for BQ last year?

My understanding of the Haynesworth head stomping incident is that the Cowboys were repeatedly trying to take out his knees and he got frustrated and lost it. Does it make it right that he used his cleats as a cheese grater on Gurode's forehead? No, but if someone was trying to take away my livlihood, I might get a little frustrated and lose it too. Not saying it's right, but I think it may have been isolated. Besides, it's all conjecture because there's a 99.9% chance Haynesworth gets franchised.

To be fair though, that would fall under had issues, not has issues.

I see a lot of calls for Berrian, but my number one receiver is Patrick Crayton. In the few Cowgirls games I've seen, he has impressed me mightily. Plus, his price tag should be lower and allow us to take a flier on a bigger name guy on D.

I don't think we go after any "name" WR's at all.
I think we stick with Cribbs and Travis Wilson and then grab one perhaps Round 3 and then a bunch of UDFA... all with the idea of finding a burner with semi-decent hands to stretch a D vertically.. anything to do what Tim Carter should have been doing (honestly, did he really contribute much of anything at all to us... was he even a decent decoy at all??).
An old name that might be good now that he's had a couple healthy years: Andre Davis is a free agent again.
I think he might be a great fit in that role for us.... and he'd be a helluva 2nd option at Kick Returner as well.

Travis Wilson can't even make the gameday roster. I doubt he is with us next year.

Crayton was resigned, I believe.

aye, he'll likely be given the full offseason as a last chance though.
From everything I've heard/read, he has all the physical tools and skills anyone could want, he's just not got much in the mental game and is slow developing.
The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Andre Davis possibly making a return to C-Town.

I HATED when we let him go.
Tim Carter vs. Andre Davis ......... yeah......Carter really did wonders for us. We don't need a returner obviously, but he'd be a nice #3 option for us.

I'd like to resign Tim Carter, I know he wasn't used much but he has game breaking speed and maybe we can find him and Cribbs a way to get a few touches on offense.

We, The Browns, should pick up your top 5 FA's and then sign Michael Turner and resign Jamal Lewis. LOL (not really joking)

It was because of those very issues,, past or present, that I wasn't exactly overjoyed with that signing... man I was totally wrong about him. he is a leader.. and one helleva football player. I hope we sign him for the resf of his career.....
I guess what that means is that a leopard CAN change thier spots.. if that's the case, and Haynesworthy has his act together, I'm ok with it.

Lance Briggs is the team's #1 priority.
Look for more second tier players visiting for free agency although I could see a play being made for both Suggs and Trufant.
Under the radar guys to watch are:
Travis LaBoy, OLB in our system Randall Gay, CB David Patten, WR part deux
and of course
Marques Tuiasasopo, QB if someone pulls the trigger on Anderson and signs him to contract.
