Trump campaign and JD Vance promote false rumors about Haitian immigrants eating pets
Several prominent Republicans, including the party’s vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance, promoted false claims on Monday that Haitian migrants in Ohio are killing and eating family pets.
It’s the latest turn in a campaign that has increasingly embraced race-baiting messaging, questioning Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity while seeking to undermine her immigration policies.
The rumors center on the Ohio city of Springfield, which has experienced a surge in recent migration from Haitians seeking to escape a Caribbean country that has been rocked from years of natural disasters, political assassinations and gang rule.
A post in a Springfield Facebook group recently claimed a neighbor’s daughter’s friend found their missing cat hanging from a branch at a Haitian neighbor’s home, and it was being prepped to be eaten, according to the Springfield News-Sun. Those rumors were picked up by conservative media and then spread on X, where they gained widespread traction on Monday.
“President Trump will deport migrants who eat pets,” a Trump campaign account posted to X. “Kamala Harris will send them to your town next. Make your choice, America.”
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz posted a meme showing two kittens embracing. Text overlaid on the image reads: “Please vote for Trump so Haitian immigrants don’t eat us.”
Vance posted a video of himself discussing migration to Ohio at a recent hearing. “Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn’t be in this country. Where is our border czar?” Some accounts shared AI-generated pictures of Trump holding a cat in his hands while being chased by crowds of Black men.
The unsubstantiated claims appear to be the result of an unwieldy game of telephone that began as a rumor in a local Facebook group before spiraling to reach the highest echelons of conservative media and the Republican Party. They spread widely on X, whose owner, Elon Musk, has embraced the false rumors and posted several memes that promoted them.
Some accounts posted body-worn camera footage from an incident they said bolstered their claims. But that footage was shot in Canton, Ohio, which is more than 170 miles away from Springfield.
In a statement to CNN, a spokesperson for the City of Springfield said “there have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community.”
Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Haitian American who represents a district in South Florida, called both Vance and Cruz “disgusting” when asked about the rumors they helped spread Monday.
“And I say that because these are senators who are educated men, they have enough common sense to actually look into the issue and find out if it’s true, and they have a responsibility not to be spreading lies,” said Cherfilus-McCormick.
“So I think that’s a disgusting thing to do, especially when you’re in such a high office, to intentionally spread these lies,” she added. She said the actions of Vance and Cruz were especially disappointing because both senators have immigrants in their own lives; Cruz is the son of a Cuban immigrant, while Vance is the son-in-law of Indian immigrants.
In a FAQ section on its website, the city said there are an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 immigrants in the county that includes Springfield. Haitian immigrants are in the city legally under the Immigration Parole Program as they apply for temporary protected status, the city said.
Asked for comment Monday, a spokesperson for Vance said the senator had “received a high volume of calls and emails over the past several weeks from concerned citizens in Springfield” and added that Vance’s “tweet is based on what he is hearing from them.”
“Many residents have contacted Senator Vance to share their concerns over crime and traffic accidents, and to express that they no longer feel safe in their own homes,” the spokesperson said. “Unlike the liberal media, JD takes his constituents’ concerns seriously.”
Spokespeople for Cruz did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
The Monday rumor mill is the latest time the Trump campaign has sought to stoke racial animus. Trump himself has repeatedly questioned the racial identity of Harris, falsely claiming she has only recently begun presenting herself as Black. Harris has long claimed being Black as part of her identity, attended a historically Black college and pledged to a historically Black sorority. Harris has largely declined to engage Trump’s claims about her race.
Haitians are an especially crucial voting bloc in Florida – a formerly politically purple state which then became staunchly red, but which the Biden and now Harris campaigns have believed could be in play.
A portion of the Haitian diaspora community votes Republican, said Cherfilus-McCormick, but they – along with other immigrant diaspora communities in Florida – might be “pushed away” by the rumors some Republicans have embraced, she said.
“I would expect this from somebody or people who had no connection to immigrant families, someone who didn’t know how hard we work and how we really push forward,” she said. “That’s who I would expect it from, but not from, you know, the son of an immigrant, nor someone who’s married into a family where you see the hard work we do every single day.”

Eating pets?!?!?! I know I am around those Haitians all the time in Springfield and other than the grocery stores looking more like a Mexican marketplace than an American rust belt grocery, I don’t really notice the Haitians. And the only thing that really irks me about them being here is that they get carried on the public dime for a year with food stamps, assisted rent, and welfare. That wouldn’t bug me if I didn’t see couples pushing three heaping carts of groceries every time I go to check out. It seems they share their homes with several adult couples, and each week a different couple comes in to buy the food for the week… if the cashier knew what she was talking about.
But I will say I’ve seen the Haitians create issues here because I’ve seen 3 different MAGAs lose their crap in the stores over them. But that’s the only BAD things I can see. And since they ran for their lives to get here, I think the trouble attributed to them or any refugee amounts to nothing in the grand scheme of things. Threats over Haitians caused Wittenburg University and Clark State College to cancel activities and conduct remote instruction.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — University and college campuses in Springfield, Ohio, canceled activities and moved to remote instruction on Sunday after receiving threats of violence tied to false claims about the city's Haitian immigrants.
Wittenberg University canceled all sporting events and other activities on Sunday and said classes will be remote on Monday. Clark State College also canceled activities, closed all its campuses, and will conduct instruction virtually for the week.
The two schools are the latest victims after a series of threats against government offices, schools, hospitals, and other facilities. The city of Springfield was thrust into the national spotlight after former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, began sharing misinformation about immigrants in the city stealing and eating pets.
"University administrators recognize that the city of Springfield has experienced an increase of threats to local government, businesses, and schools in the past week," Wittenberg officials posted to the school's website Sunday. "We take this threat seriously and will provide updates to the campus as we learn more about the situation."
Three elementary schools were evacuated, and a middle school and the City Hall were closed over the last week after receiving threatening calls and bomb threats. Bomb threats also forced two area hospitals into lockdown on Saturday.
State and local officials have repeatedly denounced the false reports, including Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine who on Sunday called the claims "a piece of garbage." Haitian immigrants have expressed fear and said they no longer feel safe in the community due to the threats.
Springfield campuses face shooting, bomb threats
Officials said Wittenberg University received a threat Saturday by email of a shooting planned for campus, which prompted the cancellation of events.
At 1 p.m. Sunday, another emailed threat warned of a bomb in a red Honda Civic, according to officials. Police removed a car matching the description from Bill Edwards Drive, which bisects the Wittenberg campus, but said nothing suspicious was found.
Wittenberg police are working with Springfield police and the FBI to investigate the threats and said they were increasing campus patrols Sunday.
The university urged students, faculty, and staff to "exercise extreme precaution," be alert to their surroundings, and report suspicious activity to Wittenberg police.
"As the University continues to assess these threats in partnership with the Springfield Police Department (SPD) and FBI, all Wittenberg classes will be remote tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 16," Wittenberg officials said in an update Sunday evening. "Faculty and staff are also expected to work remotely, except for essential employees. All events, athletics, and activities will again be canceled tomorrow."
Clark State College announced Sunday it will move from in-person classes to online virtual classes for Monday through Friday at all of its campuses, including the Springfield location. Citing "recent events in Springfield," Clark State said it was "taking proactive measures to ensure the well-being of all students, faculty and staff."
In a news release, the college said it received an email threat late Saturday via the admissions link on its website which raised concerns about a possible shooting. On Sunday, the college received an emailed bomb threat to the Springfield campus.
Clark State said it took immediate action in contacting Springfield police to ensure the campus was secure and safe. But, "out of an abundance of caution," the college said it is closing all campuses through the week and that employees should work from home. All activities were also canceled.
"We understand the anxiety that such incidents can cause and we are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and care," the college said on its website. "As a proactive measure, Springfield police will also increase their security presence on campus, and we are working with our wellness team and partners to provide additional counseling services."
Threats to Springfield institutions exploded after presidential debate
At Tuesday's presidential debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump again touted false claims that Haitian immigrants in Springfield are eating cats and dogs. Trump also claimed that about 20,000 Haitians in the city are there illegally, even though a majority came to the United States under the federal government's Temporary Protected Status program — fleeing gangs and economic insecurity in their home country.
On Sunday, Vance acknowledged during an interview on CNN that he has been spreading rumors. “If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people then that's what I'm going to do,” he said.
DeWine, who pledged at least $2.5 million in state funding last week to help Springfield officials with health care access and road safety, called the threats to public safety of about 15,000 Haitians state officials say are in the city "a very sad thing."
Springfield City Manager Bryan Heck, who said the city has found no credible reports of pets being harmed, injured or abused by members of the Haitian immigrant community, called the spreading of misinformation "disappointing."
The parents of an 11-year-old boy who was killed in a traffic crash last year caused by a Haitian immigrant said last week that an "incessant group of hate-spewing people" was using their son's death for political gain. Haitian immigrants, many of whom were invited to Springfield by employers unable to fill jobs, have said they are experiencing increased threats and harassment.
