Most everyone ends up at a doctors office for something.
Usually you go to a doctor because something hurts.
When you get there inevitably you are asked to rank your pain on a one to ten scale. Ten is the highest.
Until Labor Day I never knew how to rank pain because I was not sure how much something could hurt. I always thought a burn hurt really bad.
On Labor Day I fell and dislocated my shoulder. I was trying to race my eleven year old grandson three car widths. Our legs got tangled and we both went down.
My humerus was knocked out of the socket. It took about two hours before it was back in place. They had to knock me out and yank it back into place.
I have never felt pain like that. I mean screaming pain. Sweating, dry heaves, shaking all over. Unstoppable pain.
Next time I am asked to rank pain I will have a frame of reference.

Yup. It's like eating spicy food, or whether or not your computer is slow. Your only frame of reference is your limited experience, lol
Your computer is fast enough ....until you sit down at a faster computer. Driving everywhere at 30 mph is fine, until you get off the highway after 4 hours at 75 mph. You think you're a "spicy food" person.... until you eat a whole Reaper or try a Lil' Nitro gummy. You think you've experienced pain... until you have surgery involving bones, or experience some major trauma.
Life is a sliding scale.
Browns is the Browns

Glad it wasn't worse Bone.
Did you say to yourself you're now officially too old to race the grandkids or hell nah??
Chronic kidney stones since my late twenties. Some have felt like someone has slowly pushed a bayonet through my torso. I could get hit by a car and say "ehh, high 7, low 8". 🤣

Glad you're ok, finally. Just had this conversation recently. Being self employed, and getting older, there are a number of things I don't do anymore.
MY worst pain? A bruised calcaneus. That's the bone in your heel, at the back. Playing volleyball in socks, and not landing correctly on the gym floor. Hurt bad, but I could walk.
Drove home at midnight. Oddly enough, absolutely ZERO pain if I didn't put any weight on it, ie, sitting or laying.
Woke up at about 3 to go to the bathroom. No pain. Until I stood up. Screamed in pain as I fell down. Wife was yelling to as she didn't know what happened. I literally crawled to the bathroom.
Next morning she had gotten me crutches as Sooga had a volleyball tournament. Again, NO pain if I put no weight on it. 1 ounce of weight and I was down. It happened. Crutch slid, I put weight on that foot. Down I went again. The tourney was on a Sat. morning.
Sunday, after "diagnosing" it my self, I went to an urgent care for an x-ray. No break, just a bruise. Was told 2 weeks for it to feel better. Took almost a month though.
No swelling, no bruising. Nothing I could show to anyone, but trust me, the pain was out of this world.
To this day if I stand long enough in "bad" shoes, I still get an ache.

My worse pain has been really bad ear infection. The DR gave me synthetic morphine to get thru the weekend.

Racing an eleven year old in a parking lot with an uphill grade at 77 this month.
Right up there with the dumbest things I have ever done. Officially hung up my spikes. I still have a hard time accepting being a geezer. I still believe I can do everything. The reality is I cannot.
Kidney stones from everyone I know who has had them. Brutal Red Zone screaming pain right up there on the pain level scale with childbirth.
My father was a WWII Master Sergeant. He was a drill instructor. We were together in the house when he had a kidney stone attack. I took him to the hospital. Never seen pain in a person like that. He was a tough guy and he was climbing the walls and ceiling. After that he drank about ten glasses of water every day. He thought that might help from getting another attack.
I am hurting. Look like I got mugged and beaten. Hit my cheek and eyebrow on the pavement. Stitches, black, blue and swollen. My back on the right side and the entire shoulder area is messed up. Cannot lift my elbow. Hard to do simple things. But no complaints. It was my fault. I am damn lucky because it could have been way worse. I am on blood thinners from a heart attack in March. A blow to the head could easily take me out. I am very susceptible to bleeding.
You watch football and players are diving in the air. Landing on the ground and taking massive shots from other giant men. No wonder they have short careers.

I've had a broken nose, cut off a finger, a ruptured appendix and a severe head injury......but the worst pain was a wicked bout of sciatica. There was no positional relief, I was pale and clammy and threw up and had to go to the ED. I could barely walk. Narcotics were the only thing that allowed me to function until a pain clinic appointment. Luckily, the doc was awesome and an injection alleviated the pain. It flairs up every once in a while, but nothing like that first time.

Hmmmm lots of experience here. 10 surgeries in 10 years. Damage to my sensory nerves in my feet, whipple surgery. None of were as painful as waking up in recovery right after my 3rd liver resection with a epidural that didn't work. And no pain meds at all. I SCREAMED for over two hours before passing out. That was a 10 on the pain scale

Infected molar was pretty painful. Dentist gave me Vicodin. Didn't even dent the pain. i had to suffer for a couple days before I could get to an oral surgeon.

Finishing a basketball game after breaking a wrist early in the 1st quarter had some pretty solid spikes. Dribbling in that circumstance wasn't much fun.
Tattoos have a pretty wide variance.
Roofing nail through the foot, also unpleasant.
But yeah, assigning numbers is always tough. I usually end up going the descriptive route. I.e, it feels like a snaggletooth gremlin is trying to chew it's way out of my guts. Or turning it into a question. I.e, how do you think your stomach getting pulled through your esophagus feels?
Chronic pain is tough, too.

My buddy dislocated his shoulder a few weeks back. Drunk, wearing slippers on a concrete court, tried to a reverse lay up or something stupid for a guy in his 50s. It didn’t work out too well.
I had a pinched nerve flare up about 10 years ago and the pain in my right arm was unbearable when the electric wrap on it arm cooled down overnight, I’d wake up wanting to scream.

That was a 10 on the pain scale This is why I haven't posted about pain. Yes I've endured some pain. But I fully understand two things. 1. People such as yourself, who is at the very top of the list, have endured more pain than I could ever imagine and talking about my own pain would pale in comparison. It would seem trivial after hearing about yours. 2. I have a very high pain tolerance and as such many of the very things posted about in this thread wouldn't cause me as much pain as it has many who posted about it. Which makes me very lucky and fortunate in that regard. Yet at the very same time I have learned the hard way that can also be a curse. There have been times that I needed medical treatment that the pain level didn't indicate it was needed. As such I neglected to get the help I needed at the time which led to unnecessary complications and the conditions getting worse than they should have by neglecting to seek medical attention. That has been quite the learning experience.

Even a little bit of light had me wanting to poke my eyeballs out (the scratched one, anyway ), but I was fine after a few days of being blind, chasing the peas around the dinner plate and inching along the walls at my mom’s place. But I don’t think my pain level was even close to yours, though.

After additional x-rays show I may have a fracture or chip to Glenoid bone which is the cup for the shoulder.
Same injury to DW. I have to get an MRI to determine if my rotator cuff was torn.
Nothing compares to when the dislocation was ongoing. The pain was so intense.
This is going to be a 12 week to 16 week rehab. My goal is to get back to the pool. I will accomplish that.
IMO swimming has been one of the best things I have very gotten into.

Hope you get back to baseline as soon as possible bone. Living with pain sucks. I have mild ‘frozen shoulder’ on my left side. It’s gotten somewhat better with some self done therapy but it’s been ongoing for about three months now. I can’t reach up and or back for stuff. This includes pain with just putting a button up shirt on. Fun! This kinda hurt when it happened. I’m healed up fully but still getting through sensitivity training. Certain textures make me recoil. I’m learning how to live with it. It’s really changed how I use my hand. I’m having to consciously teach myself when and when not to use it. It’s a strange, slow process. Yesterday I fished for the first time since losing it. I have to remind myself to use it when reeling in line. Otherwise my brain just wants to hold it out of harms way and use my next finger as the old pointer finger would have been used. Thankfully I no longer have pain. Again, good healing to you. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/7TDFJ2F.jpeg)

The finger looks good. Glad that it has healed up well.
The sensitivity issues will probably take some time. When all the mental blocks go away and there is no conscious thought about doing anything.
I am now on prednazone oral steroid pack. So whatever I am feeling is probably misleading.
Very easy to make a slight wrong move and get bad pain.
I have to adjust.
My son and his wife Jade are off from touring and they came to my house to help for a week. Jade likes to cook. She made a bunch of meals like chili and soups to freeze so meals will be easy and fast. Jade is fun to hang out with. I love to talk to her about music. She is a true professional.

As a father you want your kids to be happy. If you get that. You are a happy man.
Jade and my son Alex are good people. They are a team. They have a great marriage. They are caring people.
It still brings a smile to my face that Jade is a monster Browns fan. She travels with a Browns towel. Wears "Cleveland" shirts.
Has a Chubb jersey. Listens to Browns podcasts while cooking. Watches Quincy every day. She is a dedicated fan to the max. They go to games.
We went to see the Braves play the Dodgers on Monday night. Got to see Ohtani and it was a beautiful night to bad the Braves lost.
Her knowledge of music is something. Even though I have no musical training at all. We can get deep in the weeds talking music. She is one of my favorite people to hang out with. We talk on many subjects. She is super tight with my daughter who lives with me along with my two grandsons.
I have to cherish our time together because it is hard to make it happen. It does not happen near enough.

BF,
Sorry to hear. Unfortunately, if you don’t say “10” they tend to think that it can be treated with Motrin.
Several years ago, one of my tower speakers was falling and I grabbed it just before it hit the ground. I heard a snap and a tad bit of discomfort in my arm. Went upstairs, laid down for a day and asked my wife to get me some muscle relaxers. - I thought that it was sprained.
After about 36 hours, I still couldn’t move my arm from my shoulder. - Could bend my elbow, could move my fingers, but everything above my elbow, I couldn’t move. I went to the emergency, and the lady helped me take my shirt off - purple as could be.
Make a long story shorter, broke my humerus off from the knob that connects to my shoulder, additionally, the knob was completely dislocated.
I’ll never forget the neurologist telling me nonchalantly that it’s a good thing that I didn’t sever a particular nerve, because if I did, I’d never be able to lift my arm again.
4 hour surgery and 10 screws later, I was golfing and lifting my arm within 4 months of the initial break.
—— The doctors, nurses, and anyone who saw my xray didn’t understand how I didn’t call an ambulance, nor how could I function with the pain for a few days like it was nothing.
We’re men, we’re trained to not disclose pain. Hope everything gets better my friend.

I always had long fingers for my size… the problem in highschool was I was a runt. I started the 9th grade shorter than many female classmates, 5’4”. By my junior year I had leaped to a massive 5’6”. It wasn’t until the summer after junior year that hit my growth spurt. I graduated 6’1”. Maxed out at 6’2” by freshman year of college. Growing up, my cousin was a whiz at the piano. She was giving lessons when she was in her teens. She always envied my hands as while we were the same height I could cover a huge amount of keys compared to her. That said I can’t play crap on the piano and she’s incredible at it. So hand size I guess matters less than innate talent and dedication to a craft. So as to me throwing football in highschool. I could throw it with a tighter spiral but at about the same distance as a 7th grader. After my growth spurt I could huck one pretty far and pretty tight. Too bad highschool was over. (Or actually thank god it was over. I didn’t have a great experience being a runt and all in a football obsessed small town.) At 52 years old those days are behind me now. My shoulder hurts tomorrow just thinking about it today.

Ha! I had a similar story. I started high school at 5’3” about 115 and graduated 6’3” about 180. Then I discovered weights in college. I’m 6’3” 215 lbs now.
Problem is, speaking of pain, back in my 20s I used to lift thinking I was immortal. Form didn’t matter. Just get the weights up.
Well, those chickens eventually come home to roost…

Gotcha. My qb in high school used to tease me for having “small hands”. I’ve measured them and they’re bigger than most nfl qb’s. Mfer gave me a complex! 😂.
Either way, hope all is well.
