I have been wondering which teams might be interested in putting together a trade offer for Anderson, "assuming" Anderson is on the block.

I happen to believe Anderson "is" on the trading block and will be traded "if" a decent offer is made.

Just to start the thread...I think it makes the most sense for the Dolphins and the Tuna to dial Savages number and talk trade.

Last season, many Dolphins fans thought they made a mistake when they took Ted Ginn instead of Quinn.

A trade that would help the Ted Ginn trade work out would be to get a QB that can hit the deep ball.

I see no QB in this draft that is ahead of Anderson in the ability to pass deep.

That is only one reason why I believe the Dolphins will talk to the Browns about the possibility of working out a trade for Anderson...

What do you think...which team will come calling and why?

Didn't the Dolphins draft a QB in the 2nd round this past year, John Beck from BYU?

I have no idea if Parcells would want to go with that kid, but I have to think Miami is going to be turning its attention to its OL or RBs.

As for which teams would benefit from a trade for DA, what about Atlanta? Harrington and Leftwich certainly didn't impress many people.

What about the Bears? Lord knows their QB situation is less than ideal. Also, how many more years does Kitna have left in Detroit? And does Buffalo feel comfortable with Trent Edwards or Losman?

Collins for the Redskins isn't getting any younger, either.

Just throwing some names out there.

Another reason I believe the Dolphins will be calling...they have not fired Cam Cameron after a 1-15 season.

With the Parcells running the franchise, the first moves were in management, not the head coach.

If the Tuna would have a plan in mind that includes a QB change, it would make sense to keep Cameron. Listed among Cameron's pluses in his bio...

"He also is universally respected as one of the top quarterback tutors in the game."

Who better to tutor Anderson that Cameron?

Another major reason I believe the Dolphins might be the team most interested in acquiring Anderson....

What offense is being run in Miami?

What offense did Anderson run last season?

The Dolphins already have the man to help Anderson progress, plus Anderson already has a year of experience in Cameron's (the Chargers) offense.

Show me one rookie QB that brings as much to the Dolphins table as Anderson does?

I have no idea on which teams might want DA.....and what it would take to pry him loose from the Browns. I really don't think any of you know the answer to those questions, either.

This is what I do know. DA is the kind of QB that Parcells loves. He wants a guy who can make every throw on the football field. He wants a guy w/a strong enough arm to overcome the bad-weather games. He wants a guy that he can mold.

He is the one that went after Vinny when others weren't. He knew that Vinny had the best arm in the business. He also knew he would listen. He said that he would teach Vinny to make better decisions and also put him in favorable situations w/proper playcalling. Vinny had a couple of excellent years w/Parcells. And if it wasn't for the officiating, they should have been playing in the Super Bowl, rather than Denver.

I can see Parcells loving DA's skill set. Whether that translates into him making a play on DA or not..........I have no idea.

Two teams looking to make a deal is much better than one, for obvious reasons.

Vers...I agree with you about DA being the type of QB Parcells likes.

I seriously doubt a deal would be a simple swap for the Dolphins #1 pick overall.

The Tuna would be doing some dealing and what a final deal could possibly look like, who knows.

Another issue, who really wants the cap hit of the #1 overall pick?

Anyone know what the Dolphins cap situation is going into next season?

I could see Tuna trading down, picking up picks then trading that pick (a lower first round pick) for Anderson while gaining another pick for the Dolphins in this years draft.

It could get rather complicated.

And hey folks...we are just "speculating here"...brainstorming, what if?

I think there are a few teams who are unsettled at the QB position.. One being the Rats but no way do I let DA go to my own division..

But in addition to some of the ones I saw mentioned...

Tampa Bay... Garcia is old and what they have behind him isn't all that impressive.. plus they don't have a real high pick so the cream of the crop would be gone anyway..

Vikings... I know some Viking fans who don't think too highly of Jackson, not sure what the FO thinks though.

Carolina... Delhomme is 32, plus they fully understand the value of a quality back-up, having gone through about 5 QBs this year...

There are pros and cons to a few teams, just not sure which one might be willing to pull the trigger..

I could see Miami/Parcells going for DA. DA will be a 4 year player with 18 starts...Usually Parcell's would go after a more experienced QB but not much with big arms out there...most are WCO touch arms like a Pennington, Holcomb type arm.

Sims, Bledsoe, Testeverde, Bledsoe II - These were the QBs that Parcells brought in when building his previously 4 teams. Not sure how DA compares with that crew but he fits in the mold.

HC - Cameron, DA just excelled in a similar system and the system isn't far off from Parcells philosophy. I can see it Cam staying and again DA would be a perfect fit with knowledge of the system.

If Cam goes most expect Mo to be highly considered...again if there is an Offensive system change - DA is familiar with Mo's system being in it for 2 years.

Good observations - Mac n Vers

If that happens I would be very happy only cause it would require draft picks and lets face it the Dolphins have good spots in every round. If we lose DA I hope its to the Dolphins.

I would feel sorry for DA though...the Dolphins OL is horrible - he's going to get beat up!

Well, this is ALL GUESS WORK,,

WE don't know:

1. If DA is even gonna be made available

2. What the internal thinking of any team is

3. We are missing a couple of Head Coaches so direction isn't clear

Having said that... Teams that I think could benefit from DA are:

The Browns of course: I love having this depth
Detroit: They don't have youth
Baltimore: They have Troy Smith and nothing else
Atlanta: They don't have anything
Miami: They got Beck in the Draft last year, depends on the Tuna
San Francisco: Alex Smith is looking like a bust, Dilfer is done,, maybe hill
Chicago: The only guy they got that they can count on is Kyle Orten
Kansas City: Maybe they are ok,, Croyle may work out in time.
Carolina: I have no idea about them so I just threw them into the mix.
Minnesota: They like thier young guy... but they might want to upgrade.

Now that I've tossed that list out there... Let me say this again,, this list and any list is worthless....it's really all guess work

just clicking....

Two other teams to look at is Atlanta and Kansas City.
Both have pretty much nothing at QB and what they do have wasn't acquired in the last year. Both teams also invested high in shiny new WR's with ATL also getting a nice new Guard in the '07 Draft.

Of course they are, but that's what makes it fun...

We don't know for sure that DA is available, but my guess is that if the phone rings, Phil will answer it and see who it is and what they have to say.... He would be stupid not to. There is a difference between him being "available" and him being "shopped"... My guess is that he is available, but is not being actively shopped.

As for your list, I addressed a couple, I don't think you want to trade him to Baltimore...

Carolina has Delhomme, who is 32 and a bit up and down... then they got Carr, not sure how much they paid for him but I can tell you from being in Carolina, they aren't all that happy with him.

Just looking at who would be possible in terms of biting on a RFA tag.

Minn might be an interest. They have a huge weakness at QB and thier draft possition is around #19 which would make losing a 1 and 3 by signing him as a RFA alot more bearable than alot of the other bottomdwelling teams.
Also the Vikings have a stout defence already with an awesome running game. They would be most likely to think that a QB is the key, JMO.

San fran is not sold on thier qb as well and they have Indys pick in round one.

Tampa bay . . . how long can garcia go??

I've got to go with IBleed on this one.

Minnisota is NOT sold on their QB. They have a solid D, they have a good O-line and and a great RB situation. They drafted pure speed at the WR position last yr., and they play at least 9 games a yr. in a dome.

A strong armed QB to loosen up the opposing defense and give AD and Taylor a little more space to run in..........that could be a STRONG team next yr.

Plus, the 17th pick in the 1st round wouldn't seem like a bad trade for them to get DA.

Nothing new here, just thought this belonged in this thread. I find it kind of interesting that Winslow sides with Quinn.

Also I'm not sure where Anderson ends up. Quite honestly, I think Savage tenders him and no one is willing to spend a 1st and 3rd for a one year wonder. JMHO. Doesn't mean that Savage doesn't try pull some kind of draft day trade to get the guy he wants to anchor his defense.

Funny thing is, wasn't it the so-called experts who considered our QB situation one of the worst in the league last year?! Funny how 1 year can change a teams outlook.

Browns enter off-season with quarterback quandary
Associated Press

Despite a breakout season, Derek Anderson faces an uncertain future in Cleveland.

BEREA, Ohio -- Sporting a fitted Cleveland Indians baseball cap, quarterback Derek Anderson packed away a breakout season into a few boxes and prepared for the long drive home to Oregon.

He joked about going cross country nonstop.

"Hopefully," Anderson said. "I'll be back, but I obviously don't control that."

The laid-back big man whose rocket right arm led the Browns to 10 victories and helped restore pride to a franchise which had gone from laudable to laughable in the past few years, wasn't sure of his future.

Nobody seemed to be.

An unexpected season of last-second wins, regrettable losses, personal breakthroughs and points galore in Cleveland ended just a little short of the postseason. The Browns, who went 4-12 last season and weren't expected to do much better in '07, finished 10-6 but were shut out of the AFC playoffs.

But while Cleveland fans swallowed another serving of sports heartbreak, the Browns handled the disappointment in stride.

"It was a positive season," nose tackle Shaun Smith said. "We had to face some negativity all year, but look at us now. We're a team that showed we can play in this league and that's what we can build on."

The Browns are about to embark on an important offseason with several crucial decisions, none bigger than at quarterback. Anderson, the former sixth-round pick who began '07 as Charlie Frye's backup and ended it as a Pro Bowl alternate, is scheduled to become a restricted free agent.

The team has several options with Anderson, who passed for 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns but also had 19 interceptions. Complicating matters is that Brady Quinn, he of the Notre Dame pedigree and runway model looks, also is on Cleveland's roster and the Browns gave up their 2008 first-round draft pick to get him.

As '08 beckons, the Browns have a quarterback dilemma - big time. Around here, Anderson or Quinn is as big as Clinton or Obama.

And if a small sampling of Cleveland's locker room is any indication, the Browns are divided.

"I don't believe there's a quarterback controversy," wide receiver Joe Jurevicius said. "I don't buy into that. I just think Derek Anderson's our man."

A few feet away, tight end Kellen Winslow seemed to side with Quinn.

"We drafted the guy," he said. "He's probably going to play. Derek's a great guy, but that's just the way this business works."

Surely, the Browns are developing a game plan for Anderson's situation.

They can tender him a $2.5 million deal for next year. If another club offers Anderson a better deal, the Browns can either match it or receive first- and third-round draft picks from that team as compensation.

The club also can place a "franchise tag" on Anderson, meaning his 2008 salary would be the average of the league's five highest-paid QBs. Any team wanting Anderson then would have to surrender two first-round picks.

Also, the Browns can sign the 24-year-old Anderson to a long-term contract, but that would seem unlikely after just one quality season.

For now, Anderson, good-natured and goofy, says he isn't sweating it. Cleveland has grown on him and he wants to stay.

"I really like it here. I kind of enjoy it. I like my teammates, I like the city and part of me doesn't want to move," he said.

That will be up to the Browns, who have waited for years to find one dependable quarterback and seem to have two.

However, don't dare tell coach Romeo Crennel that he's got a quarterback controversy on his hands. Crennel, whose job seemed in jeopardy when the season opened, insists the Browns are in an enviable position with Anderson and Quinn, who made his pro debut in Sunday's win over San Francisco.

"It's a good problem to have," he said. "I would much rather have too many good players, than not enough good players. We've had not enough good players around here for a while and we saw the results of that."

Needing to fill other holes, especially on a defense that struggled with injuries all season, the Browns may be willing to part with Anderson. They'll listen to offers.

The rosters for the 2008 Pro Bowl have been announced. See which players will make the trip to Hawaii.

"If anybody is interested in him, we'll just have to see how it goes," Crennel said. "Sometimes people can make you an offer and you can say, 'No, I think I'm going to stay with what I got.' Sometimes they make you an offer and you say, 'Oooohhh."'

With free agency still more than two months away, Crennel is already tired of questions about his quarterbacks. He was baffled when asked if he felt the need to give Anderson a season-ending vote of confidence.

"Why would we think that? The guy just won 10 games for us. Does he need a vote of confidence?" Crennel snapped. "You guys are the ones who always bring up this quarterback thing. Just because you're a draft pick, that doesn't guarantee you success in the NFL. You have to go play and you have to prove it.

"You have to have an opportunity to prove it. Anderson has done a good job with his opportunity. Brady will do a good job with his opportunity when he gets it."

I totally agree, candyman:
I would say we sign Anderson, then use him for trade bait for a "top notch" defensive end, and maybe a high second round. He should be worth that to some teams.

definitely, but it is because he recognizes the realities of this business.... even if he believes that Quinn IS the answer, he isn't stupid enough to say it in the media.

I'm not a contract or cap guru so I have a question for those who may know..

Would it be more cap friendly for the Dolphins to go after Anderson...or go ahead and draft a rookie QB with the 1st overall pick and pay the rookie, a first player picked contract?

Anyone know?

I agree, he never came out strong for one or the other.

I also think that if you listen to the actual interview, main site I believe, you 'could' take it that Winslow is saying the opposite. He is even toned, but you 'could' say that reflects his expectation that Anderson is gone because we drafted a guy higher, and he is not happy about that fact.

Not saying either option is true, more that the reported took one side of it to make their story more interesting and controversial. Rather than simply state Winslow's words it was spun to give a controversial opinion (of which I don't recall Winslow actually picking one guy over the other), thus selling more papers with sensational writing, imo.

Mac, I am by no means a cap guru. But all that would be necessary for the Fish to get Anderson would be to offer a contract better than the high tender. The first overall pick is going to come with a multi-million $$$$ signing bonus up front.

Therefore, I feel that Anderson could be had for less than a first overall pick in the draft. Look what Jamarcus Russell got last year.

The first pick in the upcoming draft is expected to get a contract with guarantees around the $35 million range. If we resign or anyone for that matter signs DA to a contract, I doubt it would be close to that amount in guarantees. (Maybe, stress maybe, in the 15-20 million range for say a 5 year deal. Just a first guess).

That about sums it up and as Bat points out, the difference in guaranteed money for the #1 overall versus what Anderson is likely to get, DA would be FAR cheaper... but to clarify one thing, there is no stipulation that they need to make a better offer than the high tender, only that they must actually Sign Anderson to an Offer Sheet.... which, of course, means that they simply have to sign him, whether or not it is a big money deal or a long term deal is of no consequence.... they just have to get him to agree to and sign an offer.

Once he is signed to an offer sheet, if we don't match, the offer sheet becomes a contract between DA and the Phins and we get some draft picks. If we match, it becomes a contract between DA and us and life goes on as it is now.

Contract would be better for the overall #1 pick economically - better if you were the Player. Team would save money on what they will get for DA compared with Overall #1 contract.

9/10/2007: Signed a six-year, $61 million contract. The deal includes $29.2 million in guarantees (all six years' base salaries), with a one-time performance bonus bringing the guaranteed amount to $32 million. Another $7 million is available through incentives. Russell will earn a $3 million bonus in 2010 if he takes 35% of the team's snaps in 2007, 45% in 2008, or 50% in 2009. 2007: $2.975 million, 2008: $3.71875 million, 2009: $4.4625 million, 2010: $5.20625 million, 2011: $5.953 million, 2012: $6.693 million, 2013: Free Agent

I'm sure DA would sign for a lot less but like all contracts the guarantee is the kicker...32mil guaranteed is a lot - DA will be more than happy to get half of that gurantee.

But it basically falls under risk and reward. Unless there is a Close to Sure thing wonder out there like John Elway or Payton Manning - the risk is high for the history of reward. I think the value of DA comes in his 18 games as a starter. There is enough film on him to evaluate him and know what he is. If anybody actually works out DA he would wow them and seal the deal. He really makes some fantastic throws on a consistent basis when warming up. Many coaches who are ehhh about the film will think that they can make him into a better QB and get those great throws more often under their tutorledge.

Didn't the Dolphins draft a QB in the 2nd round this past year, John Beck from BYU?

79...looking at Becks first year in the NFL...does he look like he's ready to take over the Dophins offense next season?

Compare Anderson and Beck...based on what they accomplished this season..

...WOOF...mac

Put Anderson behind Miami's Oline and you'd see Beck statistics.

Ever wonder what would have happened had the Phins taken BQ??

There would be NO discussion of letting Anderson get away under any circumstances and a long term deal would have been done already and some fans that nitpicked the hell out of him all year wouldn't have been so ready to call him a finished product at age 24 that could not get any better..

That's what would have happened,,,,

How's it feel to be off ignore?

not once

but we would have likely just taken Wright with our original round 2 pick (or maybe someone that moved off the board before we actually ended up picking that we liked more than EW) and then would have had a 3rd rounder still.

But then I doubt we trade Frye in Week 1, so he maybe doesn't get pulled because we wouldn't have been on the phone with Seattle and we might still be waffling between Frye & DA.

As much as folks will complain about the latest Deadbate, it could have been a helluva lot worse

Browns is the Browns

... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.
