From my impression, he deflected on a lot of stuff. I think Dana did a bad job of talking over him, though, too. The first part of the interview up until the "creating a story" part was kind of a crap show, honestly, between the both of them, between the fact she was letting some of her frustrations be aired and the fact he was deflecting from some things in a similar manner to how Harris did in the debate.

The "creating a story" part began with her question around the 10:40 mark where she bluntly asked if he could confirm that the rumor about eating dogs and cats was baseless. He began his response with a deflection and then hit the part where he said "If I have to create stories..." When she confronted him with it, he paused for quite a while, in what appeared to be him regrouping himself. It appeared speculative either way as to whether he initially intended the "create a story" phrasing to be making something up vs creating a headline, which obviously people on here are divided about. It didn't help him that he said "creating a story" when the question asked was whether he could confirm that the rumor about eating dogs and cats was baseless. On the other hand, I could see his point if he initially said "create a media headline" but he obviously didn't say that either.

One thing that does irk me about what he said is what I perceive to be his areas of focus and his detachment from issues that really hit his constituents. I know for a fact that there were a lot of people, myself included, who wrote to him directly asking him to comment on fixing things like tuition costs, and other cost of living issues, and there is this repeated focus on things like people eating dogs and cats. I know this interview was particularly focused on his statements about dogs, cats and Springfield, but I would sure hope he actually starts focusing on problems that really do affect his constituents. That goes for the Dems as well.

But she also probably noticed, like a lot of people did, Vance continue posting fake stories on social media and encouraging other people to do the same on the immigrant story. It’s terrible.

As frustrating as it seems for Vance, bash is under no obligation let that man sit there and lie on HER program. And people need to remember that politicians work for us, not the other way around. When you say outrageous things in public, you should have to explain yourself as an elected official in public.

She is under no obligation to let that clown lie and dodge and spin, especially since his rhetoric is directly leading to bomb threats in our damn state.

No, he did say flat out he was creating a story. He said he created the story to get media attention. In case you missed how the trump train works, they'll say anything no matter how crazy to get media attention. This is pretty basic actually. And DNA isn't needed. Somehow you indicate a vague reference to "what his constituents said" is evidence at all.

Went to the local newspaper a little bit ago and see that this morning threats are still happening at local schools and even Wittenberg is switching to online classes as they are getting threats and they are canceling other events like culturefest due to security concerns.

Also, saw in the Springfield paper that trump is looking to take a break from his golf game to come to Springfield. What could go wrong?

I also want to point out that these folks are immigrants, NOT illegal aliens. They came here legally within our current immigration policy, most as refugees. Go ahead and criticize the process/policy, but what's going on right now is (baseless) attacks on the people involved that are entirely based on hate instead of facts and/or policy.

Did any of you watch the entire exchange between Vance and Bash? He completely destroyed her and illustrated her lack of integrity as a reporter.

I agree that dropping 15k-20k (most articles I've read can't even accurately state the real number) foreigners into a town that spent the better part of the last decade contracting in population doesn't exactly make for an easy transition. Medical infrastructure is struggling to keep up, and there are big issues with a large number of foreigners that were apparently never told about proper driving in the US. That's a big fail.

But are you saying that the proper course of action is to make up stories about these people eating pets? Because it's not. It's dehumanizing and wrong and ends up saying more about the people parroting that nonsense simply because any good intention you MAY have had has now been lost amid grainy videos of grilled chickens and lamb being passed as dogs and cats and schools being closed due to bomb threats (for about a week now?).

Yeah, it's a simple concept, really. There is a desperate full court press to change the narrative. Everyone, from the mayor to DeWine himself has pushed against the nonsense put out there by Trump and Vance. If they wanted to truthfully highlight the burden of a broken immigration system, the fruit was pretty low hanging, as you described.

That is not what they did, though.

I think you mean Obama, but I can't argue. Like I've said before, it would take a major L in the election cycle to create any sort of change. You are probably right if the margins are close - and all signs point to them being close again - that they will double down in the event of an election loss.

To reinvent, it would take a lot of constituents to finally start "finding their rational" to push back and put the party into hands of people who are real adults. I do think there would be an opportunity to do that if Trump is pushed out. We know a lot of major players in the party are opportunists at this point (including the prospective VP), so I don't think they would hesitate to disavow him the moment it made sense for their own political careers.

I admit that I did not know that, nor did I see that. I will go ahead and just concede that point and the rest of my post, along with the central point, still stands.

I didn't think you were. It's something where I think I begin spiraling on thinking about the issues and dynamics. My central point is what I said earlier. Yes, there are legitimate issues in Springfield/other places with the influx of immigration. I even think Dana Bash did refer to that during her interview. No, I do not think Trump and Vance helped the situation there. Yes, I do think they made things far worse for Springfield because of the idiotic comments. Yes, I do think they are trying to pivot to change the narrative now that they realized the fallout that happened during the debate. And yes, I still do not think the Democrats have a plan to fix the situation. Nor do I think the Republicans do.

So, in other words, we're effed.
