Snow Flurries Possible In Central Florida During Hard Freeze

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A hard freeze expected in parts of Central Florida early Thursday will bring a chance of snow flurries in Daytona Beach and other areas as temperatures drop into the teens and low 20s. "There will be clouds that are similar to the clouds that are generated in the Great Lakes states when we have lake-effect snow," Local 6 meteorologist Larry Mowry said. "I'm going to call for the possibility of snow flurries early Thursday morning near the coastline."

Mowry said residents in Daytona Beach, Titusville, Palm Bay and Melbourne may see the snow flurries Thursday. The hard freeze warning was issued for areas north of Interstate 4 and counties located south of I-4 were under a general freeze warning. Temperatures were expected to drop to 19 degrees in parts of Ocala early Thursday.

"There is really a bite in the air," Mowry said. "With those strong winds out of the northwest, we are not going to warm up a lot Wednesday." Many of the freeze warnings will begin at 1 a.m. Thursday and end at 9 a.m. A freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or highly likely.

So, temperatures in many counties are expected to drop below 28 degrees for four or more hours, Mowry reported. The conditions can kill sensitive vegetation as well as harm small animals left outdoors without shelter.

Red Flag Warning:

Meanwhile, The National Weather Service in Melbourne issued a red flag warning in Central Florida, which is in effect from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday. The red flag warning -- a combination of low relative humidity and strong winds -- is forecast to occur in the next 24 hours.

Expecting 20's and low 30's tonight way down here too.

I live close enough to the Gulf that it probably won't get below 36.

Price of orange juice was going up anyway do to the drought we've had down here. 30-40% smaller crop takes this year.

Two years in a row, wow. We had snow there last year too. Yup, gotta love global warming. I remember calling my brother and complaining how cold it was. He started to make fun of me until I told him that it was snowing...yeah he shut up pretty quick after that.

I'll have to call him and tell him Orlando is getting snow again. Too bad I don't live there anymore.

Good...I'm glad they are getting a taste of winter. I just shoveled 6" of the stuff off my driveway so a few flurries won't kill the Floridians.

Agreed. While I do miss living in Florida, I sure don't miss driving in Florida. After all, there is a reason why I am now saving 200 on my car insurance after moving.

Tell you what, it's around freezing in Charlotte NC and people are crying. I never heard of a red flag warning till today

We got lucky!!!!!! We left Ohio on the 26th of Dec for Orlando. Spent 3 days there, then 4 days in Vero Beach. Coldest day was the day we arrived - about 78 deg. We left just in time, too.!!! Sunday was 86 deg.

Sat by the pools, and the ocean, drinking and playing all day every day (except that one day we spent at Disney - my 7 yr. old daughter - so much fun).

And to make it worse......there are no snow plows down here.....their solution is to put sand on the snowy roads!

That does a whole lot of good!

They used sand in Michigan due to all the FW lakes in the area. Probably the same reason Florida would do it. Gives you a little traction, but doesn't melt much.

I went out this morning to do some grocery shopping in my usual t-shirt and shorts and encountered people with hats, gloves, scarves and ear muffs. I heard more pizzin' and moanin' from these babies today than when the Supreme Court struck down the Florida Supreme Courts decision for Gore in 2000.

Sun was out all day and the temp was around 50 most of the day but you'd have thought the Ice Age was coming.

I noticed that when I was there in November...it was pretty chilly, yes, but you could tell who lived there and who didn't. Those of us that didn't still had our "summer" clothes on and those that did live there were dressed for winter.

Give it a few years, Ralphie...you'll be one of them.

Sure will, happened to my Dad when he moved to California. Now he complains when it dips into the lower 60's upper 50's in So Cal. I just laugh at him and say, I'd just be thinking about grabbing a sweatshirt! He swore he wouldn't turn into one of those guys! LOL!

Neat... You stayed at the two places I call home in Florida.

How'd you like Vero? Happen to eat at the Ocean Grill?

Nope, I've been with Nationwide my whole life....until hopefully sometime soon. They just recently dropped my parents home insurance after 30 years of having no claims in Largo. Can't stay with a company I can't trust, but thats a topic for another thread.

No school for them tomorrow.

I think everyone should live up north around the great lakes, at least for one winter, then they'll never complain about a few snow flakes.

No, we didn't eat there. We were going to go out for dinner on New Years Eve, but to get a reservation for 18 was kind of a hassle.

We stayed at the Disney place - not sure of the address, but I think it was 9250 A1A (might have the street # wrong, but it was A1A, right on the beach.)

Nice place. Nice beach, nice pool. Bar right near the pool. Cool water slide for my daughter (and nieces and nephews). Had a lot of fun. I'm just glad the weather was what it was for us.

They're calling for a low of around 10 here tonight, then by Sat. a high of about 46. I hope so, as I want to shoot my christmas present. I got a .50 cal. black powder rifle. Need to sight it in, and I don't do so well sighting in a gun when I'm shivering.

You may be correct about that but I am in the process of turning the heat on for the third time in 2 winters. It's a bummer when you have to jump in the heated pool to get warm in Florida.

I lol'd. It's the truth. I swear Florida drivers suck.

As for Temps, it was 84* on Tuesday here. It dropped to 44* last night around 4 am. It's starting to warm up a little, we're gonna see upper 50's today and then we'll be back to our normal tomorrow. Mid 70's.
