Just heard from my in-laws who luckily have been in Italy whole Helene hit. Both cars totaled in their condo between Clearwater and St Pete. All the restaurants in the area are pretty much goners. Frog Pond right across the street being one of them. We always used to go there. It really sucks. I hate that it’s being politicized for all the wrong reasons, especially by one dude.

On that non political note: Wife and I, son and his spouse, and Sooga and her fiance, were headed to Siesta Key the first week of December. We decided to not go there. As of now, we're going to Arizona. Not just because of Helene, but also because of the other storms supposed to hit Florida.

Milton formed an eye this afternoon and the pressure is dropping pretty rapidly. It probably will become a major hurricane tomorrow night and Tuesday afternoon could approach a high Cat 4/Cat 5. Wednesday it looks to encounter some dry air and shear and it could knock it down to a Cat 3 at landfall. It is still going to be a major problem.

The climate scientists have mentioned that there are (3) very, very vulnerable cities in the US to major hurricanes. Those are New Orleans, Miami and Tampa/St. Pete.

Even if this does weaken and still hits as Cat 3-as it strengthens, it will expand its wind field and push that storm surge on the dirty side of the hurricane.

And this is a weird track. If it comes up to Tampa or just north-there would be a storm surge of 15-18 feet coming into Tampa Bay and 120 mph winds kicking around all of the trash from Helene that is piled up.

Oh yea, there is another one showing up on the tracker about 9-10 days out aiming for southwest Fla.

I know that area well. John's Pass seemed to get hit the hardest, but nobody over there made it unscathed. My parents in Indian Shores lost a vehicle that they left behind when they evacuated. They stayed at my house until residents were allowed back on. They are headed to me again.

Man, I hope everybody in the southeast stays safe. I’m happy I decided to come back to NE Ohio after the Army cause I’ll get beyond annoyed at having to evacuate damn near every year.

Yeah, they live real close to John's Pass. North Redington Beach is their section of town, real close to Indian Shores. The pics they sent were absolutely insane. Unfortunately all their cars were ground level.

Twice since early this morning they had to issue corrected updates.
The first time they had to update the intensity because this thing dropped 8 millibars in 80 minutes. 30 mb drop in 24 hours is a very rapidly strengthening hurricane.
they just had to issue another update-to correct the distance from Tampa and to issue that this is now 940 mb with sustained winds of 150 mph and is now a Category #4.

I'm so sorry to hear of the losses that both you and Con's family has endured. At least they were all out of the area and are safe and sound. I know that doesn't lessen the losses they suffered and the huge negative impact it has on their communities. The closest thing I have seen to that was the Xenia tornado in the spring of 1974. It just wiped a part of that city off the map completely. And even then I didn't live in Xenia. But as a teenager seeing that devastation left an impact I'll never forget.

For Tampa the national guard was pulled from the northern states to come down before going back. Trucks showed up this morning taking debris away on the beach. My parents said they seem to be dumping everything at the fairgrounds as they passed by to my house.

Up here in Western Pa/Eastern Oh, we had a bunch of lineman call in on Friday and over the weekend saying they quit our jobs, They have an offer for storm work to go to Florida. Storm work pays REALLY well.
One of the lineman told our guy in charge of manpower that they are making calls all over the US and even Canada to get utility workers.

5 pm advisory was 180 sustained winds, 220 mph gusts with pressure of 905 mb.

8 pm advisory is still 180 mph winds but the pressure is 897 mb. This probably is a record for the gulf.

Camille was 900 mb. Andrew was 922 mb at landfall

At this point the entire state is becoming uninsurable.

And it’s getting continuously worse every year. Some social media users spreading the claim referenced the North Carolina city of Kings Mountain, where a lithium mine is projected to reopen. Others reference specific companies like Piedmont Lithium, which aims to build a lithium mine in Gaston County, North Carolina.

These proposed lithium mines are located about 80 to 100 miles away from Chimney Rock.

Local officials are actively working to reconstruct damaged infrastructure in the town. Chimney Rock has posted updates online about its recovery efforts, including rebuilding Main Street, restoring power and clearing debris.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said in its new "Rumor Response" page that the agency cannot seize a resident's property or land.

I understand that you don't think unnamed sources (plural) in a meeting of "top national security and homeland security officials" means anything. I mean who could trust anything they say, right? They've only passed heavy national security background checks to qualify for their positions.
