NEW YORK -- New England's undefeated season now includes yet another achievement: Bill Belichick is The Associated Press 2007 NFL Coach of the Year.

The first coach since Don Shula in 1972 to lead his team through a spotless regular season, Belichick won the award Thursday for the second time in four years. In 2003, the Patriots went 14-2 and won their final 12 games. This time, Belichick's team rampaged through the first part of the schedule, then won a handful of close games on their way to 16-0.

That was enough to offset the major blemish on Belichick's resume: a $500,000 personal fine, $250,000 fine for the team and the loss of a first-round pick in the upcoming draft after the Patriots were caught videotaping New York Jets coaches during the season opener.

Spygate didn't stop 29 of the 50 voters on a nationwide panel of media members who cover the NFL from voting for Belichick. In a season highlighted by many strong coaching performances, Belichick beat out Green Bay's Mike McCarthy, who received 15 votes for leading the Packers to a 13-3 record and the NFC North title.

"Any time we win we're excited," Belichick said after completing the perfect regular season with a 38-35 victory over the New York Giants. "With the success we've had this season, [the Giants] game puts a certain little bit more of a degree of satisfaction in that game because of the culmination of the regular season. But, at the same time, we've got plenty of things that we need to work on."

Also getting votes were Dallas coach Wade Phillips and Jacksonville's Jack Del Rio (two each), and Indianapolis' Tony Dungy and Tampa Bay's Jon Gruden (one each).

The only other Patriots coach to win the award was Belichick's mentor, Bill Parcells, in 1994.

Isn't that wonderful? Bill Belichick is NFL Coach of the Year.

That is swell news. Everything about the New England Patriot organization is simply fantabulous.

Even their waterboys are something special.

This is fantastic....there are no other words that can describe this warm fuzzy feeling in my heart.

Congratulations, Bill. You're amazing.

16 - 0 outweighs everything. R.C. and McCarthy should have/could have been given a lot more love and had N.E. not gone unbeaten, they would have gotten a lot more love.

There ya have it...
Be proven that you have cheated how many , maybe countless times, fined a HALF A MILLION DOLLARS, A HALF A MILLION DOLLARS!!! and be voted coach of the year.
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING .
I guess if ya got the cash, it just don't matter...
nice lesson to be learned by our youngens...

The lesson I have learned from this is: we're not cheating hard enough. I'd trade next year's first rounder for a Lombardi trophy.

How could a team go undefeated in the NFL and not have the coach of the year?

I think it's a no brainer.

Because he got caught cheating, that's why! That should have automatically disqualified him.

It should have gone to Mike McCarthy...I even would have liked to have seen Crennel get it, believe it or not. Both of those coaches have turned their teams around in a dramatic fashion.

Marshall Faulk had an interesting thought on this subject.

How can the NFL make parameters that a NFL player cannot win MVP Player of the year type accolades if they have been suspended for substance abuse...brought on from the Merriman ordeal of 06.

Then have a coach whose actions got a major fine and stripped of draft picks - be allowed to win accolades?

It was a good point.

RAC didn't get one vote. I think 4 other coaches did after Belicheck...not a one for RAC. Associated Press obviously are Bozo's

Don't give me no squinched-up mad face.

He got caught cheating. None of the others did.

I won't believe for one minute that most teams don't attempt to get an edge in any way they can. We never hear about it 'cause they don't get caught.

Belichick got caught. Everyone acted like it was unpresidented. I think that is one reason N.E. buried their opponents in points. There was no cheating after he got caught. So, game in-hand or not, he sent a message to all of them. The Pats don't need to cheat to win.

Now personally, I believe as I think you do according to your post, that the coach who has made the most imporvement in his team should get the award. (I too felt that RAC had as good a chance as anyone but he didn't even get one vote if I read the article correctly.) A coach who already had a 14-2 team, had won three previous superbowls should not have even been considered.

But, going 16-0 never happened before. It's hard enough to have a winning record. To go 11-5 is a great, great season. To lose only 2 games all year is spectacular. But to go undefeated for an entire 16 game sesason has never been done before by anyone. So I suspect that the coach who does that is the coach of the year hands down.

That's all I have to say about that.

:

The NFL thought the violation was so bad it fined Belichick A HALF A MILLION DOLLARS, Kraft another QUARTER MILLION DOLLARS, TOOK A FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK AWAY and you think just cause he wins 16 games, it's ok? Coach of the Year?!!!
I think Pete Rose may want to hire you.

it's kind of sad how most of the media guys don't even mention the spygate thing anymore. That story got buried fast, its a black mark on the nfl and they don't want to talk about it. I hope the pats lose.

No, I don't think it's ok.

Neither do I think it's ok for other teams to cheat. But I'm sure they do. NE just got caught that's all. Anytime the stakes are huge, and what's huger than the NFL, people are going to cheat to gain an edge and if you think others aren't cheating I'm going to say that that is a naive view.

Part of the reason the Pats got caught was that the whistle was blown on them. But don't you think that as blatant as the video taping was, I mean the camera was right on the sidelines for everyone to see on TV even though it is strictly forbidden by the rules, that it should have been easily caught without Manginni bringing it to anyones attention? I'm saying some of these things have been overlooked for years but what is the NFL to do when there is proof as solid as that?

It reminds me of a neighbor kid who had gotten away with dealing drugs for so long that he'd become so carelessly complacent that he blatantly sat on the hood of his car parked on the street rolling joints. He was surprised and dismayed when he was busted after getting away with it for several years.

If the Pats so feared the heavy hand of the NFL in regards to cheating would they have been so blatant as to have a camer in full view on the sidelines? I think not. But once it was brought to everyone's attention and it could not be denied the NFL stepped in and did something about it.

The big fine and draft pick forfiture was the NFL taking advantage, and rightfully so, to send a message to all teams that cheating will not be tolerated. Now, everyone (teams) can go back to what they were doing while those who have the naive view can think that it was one isolated incident and has been taken care of and everything's ok now.

The Colts have been accused, twice I think, of pumping crowd noise over the speaker system in their house. But that is awfully hard to prove. You'd have to had been in the sound booth to actually see it done to know.

I remember the Cleveland Indians being accused of having a second camera next to the outfield camera that shows the view from behind the pitcher on every pitch. It was said that they used that second camera to focus in and steal the catcher's signals. The Inidans denied that and nothing ever came of it.

Boston played the Indians here earlier this week and Red Sox Manager Jimy Williams essentially accused Cleveland of stealing signs with a camera in center field. Some scouts noticed that when the opposing catcher signaled for a fastball -- with a flash of a finger that can be seen from a camera in center field -- a coach in the Indians' dugout would whistle; there would be no whistle, the scouts noted, if the signal was for a breaking ball. The scouts became particularly suspicious when it appeared the Cleveland batters were anticipating breaking balls from hard throwers, like Anaheim's Troy Percival.

People cheat. Teams cheat. The Pats cheated. They got caught. They got punished. The team's coach got voted "Coach of the Year". If you really ask youself the question "How did that happen even though he was caught", and give it some very careful consideraton as to why so many knowledgeable voters would overlook the cheating, I think it becomes obvious that it's nothing new.

I'm not saying cheating is rampant in the NFL. But I am saying that the Pats are not the only ones cheating and the voters for coach of the year know that. They just got caught and it became public that's all.
