http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/01/ravens_to_interview_browns_chu.htmlRavens to interview Browns' Chudzinski Posted by Mary Kay Cabot January 03, 2008 20:47PM Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski will interview for the Baltimore Ravens head-coaching position, a team source said Thursday. It is not known when the interview will take place. The Ravens on Monday fired Brian Billick after nine seasons. Chudzinski, in his first year with the Browns, helped develop the Cleveland offense into one of the best in the NFL. The Browns ranked eighth in the league with an average of 25.1 points and 351.3 yards per game. One reason for their success was quarterback Derek Anderson, who was fifth in the NFL with 29 touchdown passes. Other names mentioned in connection with the Baltimore job include Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, the Ravens' assistant head coach/offense from 1996 to '98. Chudzinski, along with several others, also was mentioned in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in connection with the Miami Dolphins job. Other names listed include McDaniels, Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley, Garrett, Cowboys assistant Tony Sparano, and Patriots defensive line coach Pepper Johnson. Miami fired coach Cam Cameron on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Browns have begun talks on a three-year contract extension for coach Romeo Crennel, said Joe Linta, the coach's agent. Crennel, who went 10-6 this season, has two years remaining on his five-year deal. "The talks were very positive," Linta said. "I really believe [Browns owner] Randy Lerner will want to make Romeo the face of the franchise for the next five years. Hopefully we can work toward that end." Linta said an extension for Crennel, who earned consideration for coach of the year this season after the Browns went from 4-12 last year to 10-6, will send a great signal to potential free agents that there's stability in this franchise. In regard to reports that Crennel is on the Dolphins' list of head-coaching candidates, Linta said he doesn't know if Miami has asked the Browns for permission to interview Crennel. Lerner and Browns General Manager Phil Savage did not immediately return phone calls. Crennel is close to new Dolphins executive vice president Bill Parcells. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm not surprised on either front but concerning Chud, I'm really hoping we can keep him around for a bit. To see him not only leave, but go to the Ravens would be a really bitter pill to swallow.
We're... we're good?

I would be very unhappy to see Chud go to the Ravens as a HC.
With that being said, I don't see it happening.

Chud is going nowhere. That job is going to Rex Ryan.

its only a matter of time before Chud ends up elsewhere as a head coach.
We cant expect him to stay around as long as we want him around. Lets just hope he grooms himself a replacement.

I like Chud and I think he did a really nice job this past season.
But you have to ask yourself, are the Rats really going to hire a guy who has only one year of being an offensive coordinator under his belt?
And if they want someone offensive minded, what about someone like Mike Martz? I know the guy's a little nuts, but the guy knows his offense.
Personally, I'm not worried about it. If he goes, he goes, and we bring someone else in. I don't want to see it happen, but there's not much we can do about it.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

What!!!!!!!??????? The thought of Chud leaving, for Baltimore, makes me want to THROW up. If our offense continues to perform the way it has, he seems to be a shoe-in to take over as the HC in a few years. Hopefully his Ohio ties will keep him FAR, FAR away from the Ravens sideline. Well atleast for 364 days out of the year.

Great news on RAC. As for Chud, I am not really worried. I have said and will continue to say that the job will go to Ryan. And besides Chud knows that a job will come along sooner or later and he hates the Ravens as much as us. Remember, the guy grew up a huge Browns fan and is living his dream right now. I would love for the guy to eventually replace RAC, but the fact is that he will probably be gone by then. When he gets a head coaching job, I will wish him the best, I just hope it is later rather than sooner and outside of the division; preferably outside of the conference.

Do the right thing, Chud!
Money is overrated!
Damn, hopefully this doesn't happen. Finally a stable offense and coordinator, and now this........ we'll just have to wait and see.

Only way i see the browns even sniffing 10 wins next year is if we don't lose anyone...or more importantly, we have consistancy at the coaching position....
Sure it's not the HC position...but lets not kid ourselves...the O was this good cuz of chud this season and his playbook...not cuz romeo made it so overnight....Chud is HUGE! even more important than romeo right now if u ask me...

Mark my words,
IF the Browns lose Chud and IF the Browns lose DA and start the year with "golden boy"...
With our schedule next year hah! We'll be LUCKY to win 5-6 games. Maybe more like 3-4. It is going to be a looooooong year.
Welcome back to mediocrity. We just can't leave well enough alone or get any breaks. Ah to be a Browns fan!

Ever think maybe the way you feel has something to do with your extreme negativity and defeatist pessimism? Nothing has happened at all and you're already crying because the sky is falling.
Chud won't be offered a HC job after only one year and even if he does go, he leaves behind a very viable playbook that fits our team like a glove and has shown nothing but positive results this year.

No one's ireplaceable, just ask my two ex wife's. Seriously..I wish I had all the threads from last year when we were talking about Chud's hire and how he was wet behind the ears and was probably all we could get to come to Cleveland at the time. Amazing what some talent on the field will do for a coach. I hope he stays for continuity sakes and expands on the playbook next year, but...The Pats lose people all the time and just seem to get better. So can we.......

They drew up like 30 possible candidates... it just so happens that Chud was on the list... this means nothing.

naw.. if they both stay... we will be fine..
I think we will be fine period.. as long as Chud stays to run this offense..
Quinn is unproven.. may not have the rocket arm like Anderson.. but he could win us games...

Guys calm down. Rex Ryan will be the coach in Baltimore. Not Chud. And you guys are pathetic already saying we're going back to 4 wins next year if we lose our OC. Chud is a very good OC, but OC's come and go, its not the end of our season if he would go somewhere. And as far as if DA goes, well that's for a different thread

No I don't have a defeatist pessimism, but I think this off-season could make or break the Browns for the next 3+ years. Before this season we stunk...flat out stunk and we had a complete turn-around based upon 4 main reasons IMO.
1) The departure of Mo and the arrival of Chud to utilize/expand our offense. 2) The departure of Frye and emergence of DA. 3) The acquisition of Steinbach and drafting of Thomas to solidify our OLine. 4) The acquisition and re-emergence of Jamal.
Now at this point in the season there is a possibility (however large or small) that THREE of those four reasons could be G-O-N-E before we take a snap next season.
Combine that with our killer schedule and you wonder why I have tempered expectations for our team next year??? GMAB.
Hey if we don't lose Chud, if we don't lose DA, if we don't lose Jamal, if we have a good draft and if we sign some legit defensive players via FA then we've got a real good chance next year. That's only what FIVE "ifs"?

Honestly i'll b shocked if we win 10 games next year with the schedule as it sits now....but i know that it means nothing at the start of the next season...look at seattle, rams and ravens this year for us...who the hell knew they all would suck? also look at texans! look at our oakland loss...etc..so it's pretty early to judge next season...but i do kno that having chud (whoever the starting QB) will be a GOOD thing....

Technically we can depending on what he wants to do. Case in point, look at Monte Kiffin w/ the Bucs. They sat down and said we want you to stay and gave him head coach money in order to stay. If Chud really does like being back, he just might be willing to take a deal similar to that and I sure hope we would be willing to do the same.

Ravens players want Ryan as next head coach
That doesn't mean a thing. I haven't followed what is happening in Baltimore but I do know it isn't always a good thing to do what players want. They might want to mix it up. That being said, Ryan would seem like a good choice. He is a very good football mind, plus he has the players on board. The thing is, how loyal would he be to the aging vets? they do need an infusion of new blood and he might not be so willing to do that.
From the list of names I think I only saw one black guy. I can't believe they can't find more then one to interview. I'm not saying there is anything racist going on, especially since Newsome is the GM. I just think there has to be more thaen one in a list that long.
If Chud were to go ( I don't think he has a chance) we can and will survive. His system is in place and I'm sure we can find someone to run it. I would worry about play calling, but I'm also sure we can find someone who can do it also.

I think that just shows how stupid it is to HAVE to interview an african american head coach. I'm all for equality, but honestly, the list of african american canidates isn't as long as the list of white canidates. Let's say you want to hire Bill Cowher. He wants the job, do you think its fair to anyone, including the african american, to have to bring him in to interview knowing he has no chance of actually getting the job. Interview the best canidates for your job, black, white, blue, orange, green, I don't care. Interview the guys you think would fit best. JMO.

Perhaps you are correct....that in that situation it's not fair...but this is to force people to think...this is highly unlikely...but this is WHY they have this in place...for example...say they interview cowher and then an african american coach...and all of a sudden they find they like something in the african american coach they didn't think about...well mayb now they want to hire him instead? like i said prolly not goin to happen...but in theory that is what it's there for...to give thoes african american coaches a chance...hell if i know i got a interview for a position i kno i'm not all cut out for right now..i would still do it...so when I AM ready to do it i would at least have an idea as to how things go....it's just like that...if you got a job interview would u turn it down cuz the chances of you getting picked over the other guy r slim? no

The way I see it is they give others a chance to go through the interview process and learn. Even if they know ahead of time that they have their guy picked it give someone else a chance to show what they can do. Sure he won't get that job but he is on the radar for others. I'm sure things get around to other GMs and they might show intrest in a canidate they might not have before.

its funny you say that he prolly doesnt have a chance.
When we hired Chud he was almost an afterthought, but blew away our FO with his preparedness and presentation

I used to think like you but I have changed. I see that it does more good to interview oothers. See my post above.
Also why is there more qualified whites than blacks? The NFL and college ranks are made up by a majority of black, and have been for sometime. It is not a prerequist to play at top level before becoming a coach, but many coaches have come from those ranks.
The thing is it was a good ole' boy system for many, many years. I don't believe it is so much the case now but the NFL tends to recycle coaches way too much. They need to give new people a chance every once and a while and to do that you must interview.

The reason I say that is because he has only been an OC for 1 year. I think that makes his chances to move up to head coach less likely. Combine that with the love for Ryan in Baltimore, and the star that is Garrett his chances are less. I'm pretty sure he won't be here long, but at least one more year.
Then again I could be wrong. It happened once before...

If Maurice Carthon can be in the talks for the Miami HC position, after what he did here....
Chud could DEFINITELY get a head coach position with what he did in one year in Cleveland.

At the same time we have to wonder how many of our wins we can attritube to this year playing a few weak divisions in the league. The AFC East outside of a guarenteed loss to the Pats... A combined what, like 12 wins? Then the NFC west when we played an 0-8 or 0-7 Rams team, the 49ers, the inconsistent Cards, while at the same time though beating a possible NFC champ in Seatle? Then the Bengals and Rats had down years...
I don't want to take the negative side of this, but the schedule this year worked in our favor. The schedule next year... very well may work against us and our win total could easily drop. Not trying to be negative... just looking at who we've been playing and will play down the road.....
