naw.. if they both stay... we will be fine..

I think we will be fine period.. as long as Chud stays to run this offense..

Quinn is unproven.. may not have the rocket arm like Anderson.. but he could win us games...

What good is a rocket when it misses Iraq and hits Toledo instead? :P

We'll be fine without DA, but I would rather not lose Chud.

no its true, i agree with you P...

Chud just scares me, hes real smart...and could blow the Ravens (or Fins) away just like he did for us. Which i dont want to see. Hopefully hes fully entrenched here and wont want to leave, and/or just will have too much Browns in his head, and not be ready to interview elsewhere

Players want Ryan to be next man up
Filed under: BALTIMORE , Matt Palmer , Ravens

Baltimore Ravens players rallied around defensive coordinator Rex Ryan as their choice for the team's next head coach. Brian Billick and all of his coaching staff were fired earlier today. Dec 31, 2007 4:44 PM (3 days ago) by Matt Palmer, The Examiner
BALTIMORE (Map, News) - As Ravens players sat stunned in the team’s locker room today shortly after the firing of Coach Brian Billick, they knew exactly who they wanted as a replacement: Rex Ryan, who also lost his job as defensive coordinator along with all of Billick’s assistants.

“We want to select the best and if Rex is the best guy,” General Manager Ozzie Newsome said, “he will be the third coach in the history of the Baltimore Ravens.”

Bart Scott appeared miffed at the possibility of losing Ryan, as the linebacker departed the locker room inside the team’s Owings Mills headquarters uncertain of his or the team’s future after a disastrous 5-11 season.

“Before Rex Ryan took over full-time working with me, I was pretty much a certified bust,” Scott, a potential free agent in March, said. “I would definitely be out of the NFL right now or another team.”

Ryan, whose defense was the top-ranked unit in the NFL in 2006, was a finalist for the San Diego Chargers job last year, but lost out to Norv Turner. His name has surfaced in the past few days as a replacement for Emmitt Thomas, who replaced Bobby Petrino as Atlanta's head coach after Petrino took the same position at the University of Arkansas.

Ryan is one of the most popular coaches inside the Ravens’ locker room — and many feel Owner Steve Bisciotti should select the 45-year-old Ryan as coach after firing him Monday.

“I'd love it,” cornerback Samari Rolle said. “Not to disrespect coach Billick or anything, but I'm sure everyone around here would love that.”

Ryan has been at the controls of one of the most stifling defenses in the NFL during the past three years. His unit was depleted by injuries this season, as cornerbacks Rolle and Chris McAlister both were sidelined for lengthy stretches with serious injuries.

Defensive end Trevor Pryce barely played this season, creating a lack of pass rush that contributed to the defense finishing the season ranked sixth among the league’s 32 teams. Linebacker Ray Lewis, who was not in the team's locker room after the news of Billick’s firing, missed the team's final two games with a dislocated finger.

“It would be great,” defensive tackle Kelly Gregg said of promoting Ryan. “A lot of the guys would like that. He's a top coach. He's going to have other options.”

mpalmer@baltimoreexaminer.com

Wasn't it reported that Steven Biscotti spoke to some of the players and was told that Billick had lost the team.. well, if that's the case, wouldn't it stand to reason he'd talk to them about the next HC,,

If they really want Ryan, I suspect that will happen..

In either case, I don't expect Chud to be offered that job.. As for Romeo,, I like that they are wanting to extend his contract.. He's done a good job..

I don't want to see us have to bring in ANOTHER new offense.
I like the attacking one we have....and the players now know it.

Then again, there is the ESPN thing that says that the Ravens want a more offensive minded coach.. which is why ESPN thought that they would NOT go after Marty,,, and by extention, Bill Cowher..

Who knows...

Waterdawg: I can see what you're saying regarding RAC, but like the article said, it would go a long way in showing potential free agents that there is stability in Cleveland. A lot of places are not so stable right now. The ship is heading in the right direction here and the players supposedly love playing for RAC. I think Randy should extend him.

On the Chud front... I just heard this on Sirius NFL Radio on my way to work this morning and almost veered off the road. I think it's so typical that the friggin' Ravens want to look at Chud. Hell, it's only fitting. Phil has burned them so much in the past 2 years that I'm sure Ozzie is chomping at the bit to get some payback, however, I'm not suggesting that those are where his motivations for interviewing Chud lie alone. Chud is definitely making a name for himself around the league. Anyone who can come in and turn the Cleveland Browns into an offensive juggernaut in less than a year is gonna get some second looks. But my question is this... Chud is a great playcaller and game-planner, but how good of a HC will he be? It's hard to tell, especially with such a rapid rise from positions coach to OC to HC in less than 2 years. I'm skeptical. Furthermore, what does he have to work with in Baltimore? Will he look like such a genius over there without some of the offense weapons he was able to utilize here? Again, I'm skeptical. Besides, the Ravens had an offensive guru as HC in Brian Billick and look what happened? Ryan is a defensive guy and defense is their pride and joy in Baltimore. They still cling to this notion that they have one of the best Ds in the league, but their age showed up this year. I think they hire a Defensive guy that can squeeze the most out of their veterans while bringing in and grooming new guys to take their place.

Oh, one last thing... As silly as it seems, I wouldn't completely dismiss what the players in Baltimore have to say or think about who they hire. Just before Billick got the axe, there was a report from their locker room that said the players felt Billick "had lost them". And then, bam! Billick is done. I'm not saying that the players made that call but don't be surprised if the inmates are running the asylum over there.

Daman: I see we're thinking a lot alike these days.

The Browns know what they have in Romeo Crennel... And they know what he can bring to a football team... Thats why they want to extend his contract.

I doubt there is anyway we, the fans, or even the media could find this out, but it could be that Parcells asked for permission to speak with RAC and this is the Browns answser to that... Don't know, but it's fishy and I think it's possible.

maybe thats why they don't wait till year four.

Ozzie: Chud, we think you're our guy, what do you say?

Chud: So who is it I have to work with to build this team?

Ozzie: Well, Ogden's retiring and Heap can't stay healthy... but you have the geezers, McNair and Mason and a quality back-up in Boller. Now the defense is aging and the real talent will probably go in FA this year, but we have Ngata! He does like to punch people, but only sometimes, so the personal fouls should be held to a minimum. I wouldn't worry about him.

So what do you think?

Chud: Bye...

Shoot Dawg , trying to figure out what is going on behind closed doors in the NFL is like going outside and takin a whiss on a real windy day ..

I had my doubts about Savage as the " Talent Guru " for some time . Seems like I was just a little to impatient ( who would believe that ) .. I have a lot more faith in the man now ( still going to make a few phew pas with pick ups ) ..

Like many I fell in love with " Chud " , a young and growing talent

No surprise , I'm still not sold on RAC. as the promise Land Leader .. I think this next year ( off season and all ) will go along way in gettin me off the fence when it comes to RAC.

Just as curious to see what if any coaching changes take place on the " D side " of the Line.. I am not crazy about our LB'ing coach at all ... I will leave the Grantham debate to others..

I look at it this way.

Chud is a viable candidate to interview for a HC job. Given the situation in Cleveland, and the results, his impact on making the pieces work deserves notice.

I would not discount Rex Ryan as the HC for the Ravens. He has demonstrated the ability to field good defensive teams.

If Chud were to leave, I would go to Cam Cameron. End of story.

I don't like to hear either.

I don't want to lose Chud and don't see any reason to extend a guy who has 2 years remaining.

One would be bad news, the other dumb news.

Rex Ryan and Chud will be excellent head coaches and both should have a head coaching gig fairly soon. BTW i wouldnt be opposed to giving Grantham the boot and bringing in Rex ryan if he doesnt get the HC job or his brother Rob. I just dont understand how the Raiders could dump Rob Ryan.

Personally I would wait until after next year to decide Romeo's future. i see no real advantage to extending him right now. He had one good year and still managed to miss the playoffs despite having the easiest schedule in football.

Also why is there more qualified whites than blacks? The NFL and college ranks are made up by a majority of black, and have been for sometime.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I thought only a small percentage of coaches (including all coordinators and assistant coaches) was african american. I thought the majority was white. I could be wrong though.

If you are going to call black Americans, Africans, you might as well call white Americans, Europeans.

Just clicking...

Funny how this was mentioned as a possibility by a few of us posters and was dismissed because it was his first year... It is a "what have you done lately" league where up and comer's get a crack at a young age... I do not want to lose him either but to be quite honest, I saw this happening around week 6...

As far as extending RAC, I am with Peen and Mourg on this one... The potential players will be weighing in more about the direction we are heading rather than how many more years the HC has left...

And Michele Dawg, I also agree that we could be ATLEAST 3 losses less next year at this time even if we lose no one... We were blessed with a gravy schedule and it has helped make us look better than we were...

Nice to enjoy the 10 win season but at the end of the day, it is once again all about next year...

Rob Chudzinski is just 39 yrs old, but that "is" old enough to be a head coach in the NFL.

The biggest concern in hiring Chud would be his NFL experience which is just 4 yrs.

Some teams look at their area of weakness and attempt to hire a head coach that can help the franchise fix that area of concern. For the Ravens, their area of weakness is the offense.

If you think it could not happen...that the Ravens wouldn't hire an OC with just 4 yrs NFL experience to be their next HC...the Raiders hired a college OC with no NFL experience to be their HC last season...Lane Kiffin.

Some might say, but look at the Raiders, they were only 4-12. But they did add 2 more wins this season.

Look what the hire of Kiffin did to the Raiders offense... the Raiders offense ranked dead last in 2006 and this season, they rank 25th. That's a move up of 7 positions in one year and that was without a true #1 QB.

That is progress...measurable progress.

Did the Raiders really hire Lane Kiffin for his HC qualities?...Not in my opinion...they hired Lane Kiffin to get his offense..to help fix their weakest area.

Now look what Chud did for the Browns offense in one year.

The Browns offense ranked 31 overall in 2006 and this season, they finished with the #8 offense in the NFL, overall.

THAT IS A HUGE MOVE FOR THE BROWNS...and huge accomplishment for a OC.

Was it all do to Chud?....NO...But, Chud was the man behind the Browns offense, no doubt.

Could Chud help to improve the Ravens weakness?....No doubt.

A move to hire Chud does two things, it weakens the Browns and strengthens the Ravens, with one hire.

I'm holding my breath on this one...knowing full well, Chud "could be" the Ravens next head coach.

I do have some concern that the Ravens could be playing with Chud, attempting to find out more about the offense he installed for the Browns. Possibly trying to learn more about the communications and terminology used at the line of scrimmage.

But then again, the Ravens could be dead set on making Chud their next HC, IMO.

The story about the players wanting Rex Ryan...I seriously doubt that will happen...why?...The Ravens problem is on offense and Rex Ryan is a defensive coach. The Ravens would still need someone to fix their most serious problem, the offense.

Like I said, the Ravens play for Chud should be taken seriously simply because it would be a way for the Ravens to hurt the Browns and add a new OC/HC to help their weakest link, the Ravens offense.

Someone started a thread about what Savage needed to do first during the off season...my answer was to secure the coaching staff, especially the coaches who have done a great job for the Browns this past season.

But, what can Savage do if a team is willing to give Chud a shot at being their head coach...in name and pay, while using him to fill their OC position? ......

Savage could raise Chud's pay and name him the assistant head coach, a position now held by QB coach, Rip Scherer...

Other than that, there is little the Browns can do...it's Chud's decision....woof....mac

its only a matter of time before Chud ends up elsewhere as a head coach.

We cant expect him to stay around as long as we want him around. Lets just hope he grooms himself a replacement.

Which is the only reason why I dont want to see Crennel get an extension. I dont want to see Chud leave as a HC to another team. Signing Crennel to an extension only means that it would be that much longer for Chud to get the job. Chud was only an OC for one year, after being a TEs coach for about 4 years in the pros, and he is already being considered as a HC. Thats being considered for a HC job after only being in the pro ranks for 5 years. Another good year from this offense and he wont be around after that.

One thing to consider. With Anderson being a RFA, and Miami and possibley Baltimore needing a QB, I wonder if a team that hires Chud will want DA to come along for the ride?

While I agree that the offense of the Ravens is it's weakest link, I don't think it's something that Chud or any NEW OC or HC could fix quickly given the level of talent on that unit.. They have issues.. maybe they have a QB in Smith,, maybe they don't... time will tell, but the line is weak, they have a talented but flaky running back and outside of two guys, who do they have that scares you as WR's.. They have trouble,, the kind that a New HC or OC isn't gonna fix in one year..

The D is still dangerous but getting old and they may lose a few this year..

SO is Chud the right answer? I like the guy, but I am not convinced that after 1 year as OC, that he is really all that qualified to be a HC in that environment..

We'll see.

What evidence do you have that suggests Chud will be a better HC for this team than RAC? Why don't we at least see what RAC does next season before we are ready to annoit Chud as our new HC.

None.

Its just an opinion I have at the moment. I dont want Chud to replace Romeo right now. Id rather Crennel be the coach for the next 10 years and Chud be the OC the whole time. But RAC is an old man and I dont want to lose a bright young football mind like Chud just yet. I would like to see Chud be the Browns OC and be ready to be the next HC when Romeo is ready to step down. But with Romeo signing an extension, I dont see Chud turning down HC jobs during Romeos tenure for 5 years.

I also have no idea if Chud is putting his name out there or if these other teams are throwing Chuds name out there. Chud might not even be looking for all I know. Remember Gruden was in line for the Buckeyes job just for him to say "Thanks but no thanks". I want the coaching staff to stay just the way it is.

I have questioned alot of things Crennel has done but I wanted to give him time. I have given Grossi alot of crap for all his anti-Crennelism. Hell, I even thought Palmer was fired too early. It was for the best of the team, but with what he was given, I didnt expect him to do anything with Dwight Clarks horrible drafts.

Back to the original question, I have no evidence that any coach at any level or position can be better then any other coach at any level. I just have opinions and thoughts I would like to share with other fans. This one is just disappointment of the fact that the Browns can lose Chud after one fun season to watch

Daman....But that is precisely the point I'm trying to make.

To push the Ravens franchise to the next level, the playoffs, Chud does not have to have HC ability...just OC ability.

The Ravens need to fix their offense to get back to the playoffs. They already have many of the pieces to the offense...its just a matter of establishing an offensive system that produces.

Again, look what the Raiders did a year ago...they hired a guy that had zero HCing ability...but Kiffin did have experience coaching all the offensive positions at the college level along with being a very good OC at SC before being named the Raiders head coach.

The jury is still out on Kiffin and the Raiders decision to hire him.

But he did help the Raider offense improve even though he had never been a head coach, any where.

JMHO, but if the Ravens wanted to turn their franchise around "quickly", they would look for someone who had more of a background coaching on the offensive side of the ball ...rather than someone who had experience being a HC...WOOF...mac..

Losing Chud would be tough, but just think of the bright side-----------the BQ supporters would have a built-in excuse: "It's not BQs fault we aren't scoring points, it's because we lost Chud and replaced him w/a chump. Fire the bum!"

That could go along with:

---"Joe Thomas is having a sophomore slump. Fraley and Tucker got old fast. Shaffer just played out of his butt last year. It's not BQs fault there are more sacks. The line sucks!"

---"The schedule is tougher."

---"The receivers are dropping too many balls."

---"Jamal just played for the contract. He sucks this year, so teams are dropping all 11 guys into coverage."

---"The fans are so mean."

This would be like a double loss--lose lose if some other issues are not addressed. Keep Chud fer shure!

I would gladly throw in Grantham and a pick for Chud. Do we match offers or is it entirely out of our hands. Not sure how the coaching deal gets handled. I want Chud to succeed, but he has more tools here than they do. Will the BQ prospect help anchor him in Mecca on the Pond?

Way to be melodramatic. No matter who our OC or QB is next year, we could possibly lose more games and look worse.

Not a Quinn fan are you?

Anyway, losing Chud would suck majorly, but the likelihood of him going to Baltimore are slim to none. Modell took our team, he sure as hell can't have our best OC in years though!

Can I add that one to the list?

Look, I don't get why you keep beating a dead horse. We fans have no control over who the QB or coaches are next season. Why don't we just have faith that the FO knows what they're doing and STOP TAKING PERSONAL SHOTS AT OTHER POSTERS?

To push the Ravens franchise to the next level, the playoffs, Chud does not have to have HC ability...just OC ability.

THEY LACK TALENT... no HC,,, be it an excellent OC or not, is gonna make that rag tag bunch of guys into a winner again.. they just flat out lack the talent,.

DO they have a QB..., well, if you think that Smith is the man,, then yes, but you would be hard pressed to find a lot of people that agree with you.. I say it's too early to call him a winner.. McNair is done and Boller hasn't made it yet..

Do they have a Oline....., this doesn't depend on Ogden, he's done and just doesn't know it yet... actually, I think he knows it... I expect him to retire. They got some others, but without a LT,,, there is a giant hole that isn't filled.

Now jump to the other side of the ball,, That D has been amazing for the last 8 years or so,, but it's leader is Ray Lewis and he's what,,, 300 years old now.. I bet they lose Suggs this year and they lost Thomas last year..

They still have talent over on D,, but the old grey mare ain't what it used to be.. that's for darn sure.

So it's not just throw in a guy like Chud who seems to be a pretty darn good OC (after one season) and hand him an O that is lacking some key ingrediants, and a D that has "I'm tired and I wanna go home" written all over it and watch as he shoots himself in the head ten minutes after the first practice.

That team needs someone of such stature that Ray Lewis will put his blessing on the hire.. otherwise, it's an uphill battle.. one I don't think Chud is ready for at this point..

Cowher, Marty, Rex Ryan only because the players say they like him might be right. Any way you look at it, they need a Dick Vermeil type of guy that can instantly garner respect and make them all stand up and take notice.

A guy like that would have a pretty good shot at making them good again..

Someday,, sure,, I think Chud will be great.. but to throw him into that hornets nest at this stage of his career... No, I don't think that's even remotely a good idea...

It may happen, but that doesn't make it a smart move... Ozzie is smarter than that..

LOL.............I could have sworn that you were the one who directly replied to my post, not the other way around.........or was that your evil twin?

Look............you don't like me and I don't like you. How about we ignore each other? Sound good?

Yes, I replied to you because you were putting down a group of fans that feel differently than you do and in the process you weren't very kind.

Please don't speak for me, but thanks for your honesty.
