I need to get a new car (totaled my car this past week) and its the first time I have ever had to go out and deal with car salesmen, any salesmen on here want to tell me what to look for and how to handle these guys, I always hear shady stories about them.
Thanks.

You want them to help you after calling them shady? Oookay. GM will help you out when he arrives. Just listen to about half of what he says, that always works for me.

I'm no car sales person, but I'm gonna guess one of the first questions will be "are you looking to buy new or used?" followed not to distantly by "what is your budget?"
Or they may switch those questions around.

They also say that the little rooms they make you wait in are bugged so they can hear your conversation while they supposedly "check with the manager" on pricing. So when you're in there, if you're with someone, talk about anything but the car..or say, "if they can't meet my offer, let's go to such and such down the street". If you're alone, make an imaginary phone call and do the same.

For starters, the internet is your friend.
Do your research, know what you want in car, and what is available to you. Know what you can afford. Know what options you can live without if need be, and which ones you must have. Know what the going price of the car you want is. Have financing already approved and handled if possible. Be willing to resist a deal and walk away, and be sure to walk away.
I personally will give the salesmen 1 trip to his "manager" to approve my offer. if they come back real close I will either take the deal, or negotiate either lower, or extra options. Upon his 2nd return if I don't get what i want, I walk out. Do a little more research and determine if my proposal was asking too much or if they just didn't want to deal, then try again later.
Since I buy new anymore, I often find the car I want in the dealers online inventory selection and hand them the VIN# and printout of the one I want to see. Hope it's still on the lot, and then go from there.
PS: I am not a car salesman, I just got tired of the run-arounds you get at alot of dealerships and lots.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Here's the tips that I've used, and I've worked some good deals ... I had one car salesman call me a weasle, and then asked if I could come down on the weekends and sell cars for him. - If you have a trade in, sell it yourself in the newspaper. You will get a MUCH better price that way. Dealers will only be looking to buy it for a price that they can turn a profit on later. The only time I'd recommend doing a trade in, is if you're buying a new car on one of those 0 to 1% interest deals and want to roll the unfinished loan of your old car into the new loan. If you sell your car by yourself, you'll get the type of money a dealer would (buyer value rather than seller value), and then you've got a nice little down-payment as well. - Go out to some Banks and Credit Unions before hand and get pre-approved for a car loan. Shop around and get some rates and max loan amounts. This way you'll know what you can spend and what rates you can get. However DON'T tell the dealer you are pre-approved until AFTER you agree on the price of the car. I had one dealer thinking he was going to get me to sign on to some rediculous 15% interest rate loan, so he eventually reduced the price of the car thinking he'd nail me on interest. I got the good price, then broke the news about the pre-approval. - You are NEVER, EVER happy with the car and are always ready to walk away ... or at least in the eyes of the dealer. Their job is to sell you the car, not to let you walk. If you even give them the hint that "this is the car I want!" then they'll know they have you in their back pocket. Always think of something that could be better ... The color's not right, it has too many options, it's a manual transmission, it doesn't have cruise control, etc. I got my brand new Honda fully loaded at a base package price because I said I wanted cruise control with a manual transmission, but didn't want to pay for any of the other "extras" ... of course the only car that had cruise with a manual was the fully loaded one. - Always be ready to walk away. Sometimes a walk out the door is what gets the dealer to come to your terms. Also, sometimes a dealer may not want to give you that great deal ... you might just walk down the street and find a better car and get that deal. - Oh, and like Florida says ... do your research. Know the cost of comparable cars, so if the dealer says something like, "you'll never get a better price than this ..." you can beg the differ. It will also let them know that they aren't dealing with an uneducated pushover who will just sign for whatever they say the price is.

Sure. Maybe even a lot less. It all depends on what package/engine/transmission/options/2wd or 4X4 you want.
A really quick search of autotrader.com shows about 20 of them that could probably work at that price at numerous dealers.

One thing I would like to add is that salesmen usually ask you what payment range you want to be in. Don't negotiate the payments, negotiate the price.

Heck yeah you could ... just follow some of the advice me and a few other have given.
When we bought my wife's car, she had 12,000 cash from selling her other car. We found a car we liked that was listed for 12,500 I think, and we told the dealer ... we can cut you a check right now for 12,000, but that's all we're paying. Work the cost, title, tax and other fees to exactly 12,000 and you've got a deal. After about an hour of trying to get us to pay for this fee or that fee, and us threatening to leave and take our offer off the table, he finally agreed.
That might be another suggestion. Pick a low price and stick to your guns. Keep reiterating "this price or nothing". Even if the price is way to low, you might get the dealer to agree to a price that you find acceptable. Don't give them an inch either. They will likely counter with something like, "well you pay for this, and we'll see what we can do about this other fee." They key is to not show weakness.

See, an hour is too long to hash it out, IMO. You went in telling him your rock bottom offer, and he kept playing games...then finally agreed to the price he knew he could do in the first place. I hate some car salesmen.

I was involved in a deposition one time where a ex car salesman was involved..He told us stories of people "losing" the keys of a potential trade in car to keep the buyer there longer. One story had the manager telling him to throw the keys on the roof of the building because the owner was leaving with a different car no matter what...

We did the same thing for my stepsons Blazer in 2005. It was a 2003 Chevy Blazer Extreme w/ 16k on it. They were asking 17,300, we told him we would get him a cashiers check today for 15k even, work it all out and we have a deal. They countered once with 16 then with 15,500. We told them we said 15k even, and walked out.
The salesmen jumped in front of our car as we were pulling out of the lot waving his arms around, and said they will take the deal. We said, get the truck cleaned up and we will be back with the cashiers check in 1 hour.
Deal done.

How do they lie..... 1 I have good credit...... yet they have a Bank Rupt. two perv. car repo's, and never payed a bill in their life. 2. I was offered a better deal down the street...... Funny the paperwork they left in their cars from all the other dealers says their offers were worse. 3. My credit union has a 4 percent interest....... When I can check on line, or check my books which all show their credit union with an 8 percent rate. 4. I make 3,000 per month, (It's funny when the bank asks for proof of income and their pay stubs show 1800 per month) 5. My trade was never wrecked........ (hmmm I wonder how the frame was welded together then? 6. I can only afford 250 a month for my payment. (Then we overhear them saying they will go four hundred a month, but shhhhh don't let the salesman know) 7. I know I can buy this car for 5,000 under invoice, plus still get all the rebates, I did it on my last one. 8. I swear those are the same tires, and battery that were on the car when you appraised it, and what do you mean it had a radio, and bedliner in it when you appraised it 9. No I don't have a suspended drivers lisc. 10. Yes I have car insurance. I can name another 100 or so if you want

I have heard lines like those when I was waiting for them to bring my car out. I had to laugh, and the salesman even rolled his eyes as he walked past me.

Most of that stuff is checked out anyway, like credit, what you earn, etc. It's not like they are going to get away with anything. And some of the things they say are to combat the the things they know the car dealer is doing to them. I'd say more consumers have been ripped off by salesfolk than the other way around.

Exactly ... although it might be fun these days now that consumers can use the mobile internet to check VIN numbers on the cars dealers are trying to sell.

I would just work through the internet salespersons. Most dealerships have them. You send them the Edmunds.com price info and say, "this is what I want to spend". And boom, it's done.
From my experience, the internet salesperson will let you dictate the price near 1-5% of the invoice. They know you're an informed buyer.
Either that or go buy a 2007 model at or below invoice (which you might be able to follow the same process).

Where do you think the term "Buyers are liars" comes from. I use to think I was strange untill I got in the car business. I'm telling you there are a whole lot of total nut cases running around out there that couldn't tell the truth if their life depended on it.

Jules lets say Michelle has a customer come in and start asking her questions about a message. They take up TWO hours of her time, and cause her to miss out on another customer why really wanted and could afford a message. Now at the end of that two hours they tell her thanks, but they don't have any money to pay for a message, and they walk out on her. Now let that happen to her 2 or 3 times a day week, after week, after week. Do you think she will still believe people when they come in asking questions about a message?
Also credit can't be checked until a person has agreed to buy the car, not before, and people just don't walk into a dealership with paystubs and w-2's in hand.

That's the chance one takes being in sales. Used to happen all day, every day, when I was selling guitars. I just hoped the people left with the intention of one day coming back to me. And what's that got to do with anything? It's your JOB to try to sell...you can't just ignore potential clients because you don't *think* they can afford a car, guitar, or massage.
