I'm a big fan of Ebay and I finally had a bad experience on Ebay that I wanted to share. If nothing else, I need to get this off my chest. Hopefully it's cool with the mod's that it's in the tailgate forum.

So here's what happened - my girlfriend's mom wanted to get some toe socks for her nieces. Apparently these are popular now.

Well her mom is old fashioned and didn't want to use Ebay. I explained that we found them on Ebay and much less expensive than what she could find, which was hardly any at all. I reassured her that we could get it done and in time for Christmas.

Guess what happened?

I ordered twice from the seller (cheepshop911). I paid right away. The shipping took longer than expected but to make matters worse he sent me the wrong kind of sock. I ordered toe socks and he sent trouser socks. I know, sounds similar, but not what the nieces wanted. So I email this guy and explain what happened. No replies. Email again and again. No replies. I finally threaten a Paypal dispute and all of a sudden he replies back. He says to send it back to him and then he'll send a replacement when he receives it. I explain that by the time I send and he resends, we will miss Christmas. He basically says too bad. I explain that he made the error here, not me, but he did not care. I then rush ship them back for $10 and in the meantime, paypal refunds my money. In the end, I paid $10 to get $25 back.... And when I asked for shipping reimbursement, he of course said no.

All of this is going on while I am trying to explain to my girlfriend and her mom what happened. Of course, she was right and I was wrong. How could we possibly rely on Ebay.....

Being in finance, what I am chapped about is the money part. Paying an extra $10 in shipping to get my $25 back when this seller screwed up just majorly sucks. As far as Ebay is concerned, I got my money back. And while it's 'right' it sure doesn't feel right.

I did everything a good buyer should do - prompt payment, explained error and then paid to send it back. I should have just kept the error socks and still got my money back...

Anyways, the seller's id is cheepshop911 and you can see by the feedback that for the most part, when the right item is shipped, it's a good experience. But, this seller makes shipping errors more regularly than others as you can tell by the feedback. And in all situations he simply says you pay to send it back and then we'll do something. Even though HE messed up!

I just get frustrated when dealing with a business that will not own up to their error. And unfortunately on Ebay, there's only so much you can do.

And now I am torn b/c if I submit negative feedback, he will do the same to me. Right now I have perfect feedback. And even though I did everything right here, I can still get 2 negative feedbacks...

Sorry CDawg. Some people suck, and this is clearly one of them.

That sucks.

I hate that too if you give negative feedback to someone who is clearly in the wrong they will just give you negative feedback to counter. It sucks.

Been on eBay forever. I've got over 500 positive comments. I have sold and bought on Ebay. I've only had one bad experience in all these years. The bad experience was with a guy I sold something to. I suspect he substituted a part on the object I sent (a railroad lantern) that he needed for his collection and put it on mine. And then claimed it was not an original part. Because I had not taken enough pictures of the item before I sent it I could not positively prove that he was scamming me. So I took back the object and gave him his money back. But I made him pay to ship it back. And I didn't refund until I got it back.

Ebay is a huge place. I made this error when it wasn't quite so popular. I never made it again. There are crooks on there. And some people will complain if they don't get their item the next day. But overall I've pretty much enjoyed my time on there. My rule of thumb is never do business with someone who's had a negative comment in the last 3 months and I don't even look at an item whose seller has less than a 99.5% good rating. Because it's not that hard to keep a good rating

End of sales pitch......

that expeirence is not that bad you make it sound you got screwed out of fifty dollars. On 2 separate occasions ive been screwed, payed $18 and and payed 8$ and never eceived anything back.

It sounds like the seller owned up to his mistake, you have to realize shipping charges are never refundable.

you didnt get screwed as bad as you make it sound

I'm not so sure that I would buy a cheap item like socks on eBay. by the time you get done paying the shipping charges, you're paying just as much (if not more) than at the store.

The hard line is the one the seller took. Most do require a return for the wrong item and won't refund shipping even though it was THEIR fault. Happens a lot on EBAY and a lot of people don't bother returning on low cost items. The really good sellers would have accepted your statement it was the wrong item (why would you lie ?) , ship you the right one and allow you to return the wrong one at the same time they did. You usually both lose because of shipping but I have made a mistake in the past and refunded all the shipping. My feedback reflects it too......

I just found out that the TaylorMade r7 driver my wife bought me was a fake. She paid $170 dollars and the shipping.

I hate the driver so I went to Golf Galaxy to buy a new one and was going to trade this one in. When they called Taylor Made to check the serial # they found that the # didn't exist. It was a very good knockoff. Without checking the serial # they would have never known. What really sucks is if my wife hadn't tried to surprise me and by me a driver off of ebay I could have gotten a very nice driver in the store for the same amount of money she paid for this paper weight.

This is absolutely incorrect. I've been buying and selling on eBay almost as long as it has been around. A GOOD seller will definitely refund the return shipping charges if he/she made the error.

I once sent the wrong football card to a guy. As soon as he notified me of the error, not only did I immediately ship him the correct card (at my expense), I also offerred to refund him the cost he incurred to return the card I initially sent him. Lucky for me, he was pleased with my response to the problem and told me it wouldn't be necessary to refund his shipping costs. Good things tend to happen when you try to do the right thing.

There are lots of very good sellers on eBay. Unfortunately, there are plenty of jerks out there as well. The guy the original poster encountered deserves bad feedback and, if it were me, I wouldn't hesitate to hit him with it. I wouldn't worry about any negative feedback the seller might "retaliate" with. You were right and he was wrong. The feedback comments will tell the story.

I sold a classic car on ebay. The buyer replied that it was his best experience ever. He went on to say "wow" what a car. That's when I realized I blew it.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Look on the bright side, it's only $10. I know tons and TONS of people get scammed on eBay for lots more. Remember back with the Xbox 360's were preselling on eBay? A lot of those people never got a dime because the person sold hundreds of them and closed their accounts before the systems were released. And in other auctions, people didn't read the fine print and ended up buying empty Xbox 360 boxes. So your "bad experience" isn't that bad......doesn't make it feel any better though I suppose.

I once bought a pair of snowboard goggles for a Colorado trip 2 years ago. The goggles never came in. I sent mail, after mail, after mail. Finally, after getting back from my trip, I disputed the transaction through Paypal, got my money back and then left the person negative feedback.

One month later, two months after I initially bought the item, this lady e-mails and says she left the country for a vacation and offered to ship the goggles then......AND wanted me to take down the negative feedback. I told her to bite me. It's not my problem she left me hanging for 2 months. She never left me negative feedback in return. I don't know why.

The only other time I got mad during a transaction was when some freak in Africa bought my PSP I was selling and then sent me a fake PayPal payment letter (like I wouldn't check my actual account). And I said USA shipping only. I left him negative feedback too.

I guess you are right, I was thinking about returns not being the sellers fault. Ive never heard of anyone refunding shipping fees, but if i guess its the sellers fault, the right thing to do is correct your mistake per the original agreement.

The point was that I felt shafted on this one, regardless of the dollar amount.

On some items yes, but with these particular socks, it was MUCH less expensive going thru Ebay via Macy's. Of course, that was before the mess.

I'm sure that Ebay sometimes has its faults, but right now I love it because my mom got me an authentic Joe Thomas jersey for the price of a replica off of it. And the closest place I can go to and find a JT jersey is Cleveland which is 3.5 hours away from me.

Lots and Lots of bad, bad people in the world man. Don't worry, in the end, the seller will pay harsher consequences than you. I'm certain that the negative feedback you left him will affect him far, far, more, than your loss of 10.00 affects you.

As for being a finance person, I don't think this is a matter of dollars and cents. Rather, for you, I think this is more a matter of principal. Your allowed to be upset, but, karma is a very, very, real force, and it will work itself into the seller's life somehow.

Sometimes yes.

I got an authentic Bernie Kosar for $19 from Korea. I guess it was more like a "replithentic"....but $19!!!! And it's really, really nice.

You said they were toe socks, right? Was it a specific pattern? If not, you were hosed going to eBay in the first place. I've purchased toe socks at Target for years for less than $6/pair.

Beyond that, I've been on eBay for years and have yet to have a bad experience, whether buying or selling. I've made mistakes when I've made a purchase (purchased the wrong ipod cover case - didn't realize there were 2 - now 3 - generations of ipod Nanos). The only issue I ever had selling was that I sold something on eBay and the UPS store forgot to type in the guys apartment number on the shipping slip. It caused a delay, the guy was cool about it and UPS refunded the shipping cost to me since they messed up. All around good for me!

My per unit cost on the socks was under $2.25/pair before the mess. So by my math, that was a good deal - savings of approx $3.25/pair (12 pairs per auction x 2 auctions).

So before the mess, it was in fact a good deal.

I am a fan of karma, so hopefully she will take care of this one for me.
