I created a bit of a crap storm in my family. My sister sent an article talking about how Trump was going to rename Denali to McKinley and how changing the name back to Denali was offensive to Ohioans, blah blah blah…

I usually don’t comment on politics with my family to avoid the drama, but I just sent back a text along the lines of “You only care about this because Trump just brought it up. On the list of 100 things we need to fix, this wouldn’t even make the list. Stop with the nonsense.”

That went over well…

Some are taking it more seriously than you or I.

Quick question, bringing it back to the DOGE/spending theme, how the hell are we going to buy Greenland and take over the Panama Canal whilst reducing our spending and deficit?

https://www.nps.gov/dena/learn/historyculture/denali-origins.htm#:~:text=But%20the%20official%20name%20of,name%20Denali%20to%20the%20mountain.

"Name-change efforts led by Alaskan politicians continued to be thwarted by Congress until President Barack Obama and Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell took action in 2015 to restore the name Denali to the mountain. Secretary Jewell cited a 1947 law that empowers the Secretary of Interior to use authority when the USBGN “does not act within a reasonable time” as a justification to make the change."

Looks like the executive did it but it might not be a stroke of the pen sort of thing.

I watched a clip from a while ago when this whole "BS in social media and what we should do about it" thing kicked off. I believe it was actually Zuckerberg that was talking to Congress. He said something really interesting that I liked and it stuck with me.

He was asked what FaceBook should do about a politician or influential person that is posting harmful lies on his platform. He said it should be allowed, which caused the person asking the question to throw a hissy-fit. He was asked to clarify, and he said that if somebody, especially an elected official, is spreading lies then that person should be allowed to show himself as the liar he/she is. His words were something to the effect of "if someone wants to post lies, then people should see that that person posts lies".

I think some believe that if you can't post "lies" on social media it will somehow, magically, make it all go away. It won't. People will people.

I think that I agree with that in principle, and it does get me to pivot my paradigm somewhat. The biggest problem isn't that politicians are liars. The biggest problem - to me at least - is that people have been indoctrinated to believe one side or the other is good and tells the truth, regardless of the lies that flow from their mouths. Basically, the problem is that we fall for those lies, despite our own, inate common sense.

A flow-down problem from that is that people who are intelligent enough to acknowledge those statements as lies, don't feel comfortable with that realization and immediately deflect to throwing shade at the countering side because that's a hell of a lot easier than acknowledging that the side we were raised to believe is, in fact, wrong and very, very , very flawed.

To use an analogy, we've become a nation of bad parents who are constantly informed that our malcontent children (the politicians) are bullies, yet we somehow can't believe that's the case, despite all the facts, and would rather resort to it being another kid's fault, or the teacher's fault.

I think we've been duped into thinking that part of "we", the part that can't think for themselves or are easily fooled by lies, is much larger than it is. Strangely, we fall for this even though we live in a world where it's easily remedied with endless access to information from both sides of any issue.

If "ignorance" is the culprit in electing bad stewards of our future, it's got to be less common now than any time in our past. UNLESS you simply refuse to search for or believe the truth: it's usually just a few (well targeted) clicks away.

So, what creates indoctrination? Division. What is peddled to us 24/7? Division. The powers-that-be like it this way because it makes "the numbers" more manageable, especially when they can then be massaged with rhetoric rather than facts.

I guess my point in all of this is that the last thing we would ever want to do is create another layer for the culprits to work in... one in which they determine what information hits our eyeballs in the first place... under the illusion of being the Truth Police. Believing that any part of those shenanigans would provide more "truth" may be more gullible than the very people you described in the first place.

I actually don't think ignorance is the problem. Like you said, we have all kinds of endless information accessible to us, but how many of us, collectively, actually branch out and try to find out as much information as possible, vs turning on the television and trying to see what [insert talking head's name] tells us what we should think for today, January 10, 2025.

Stephen Hawking had a great quote, which I think is at the epicenter of our problem, as a nation: "The enemy of intelligence is not ignorance. The enemy of intelligence is the illusion of intelligence."

That's where I think the culture of being hellbent on being right allows some of us to be irrationally exuberant about any one of a pool of absolute crap politicians.

What you did was avoid admitting the stupidity in what he said. I never made any type of claim he would start WWIII. They were just crazy, stupid things he invented in his brain. But you have never really tried to hold him accountable for anything he has said or done and keep blaming others for it. Dismissing it with half witted responses just like you did here.

You are playing the role of trumpian dolt just fine. I'm sure he's proud of you. He depends on keeping people like you in his corner.

I don't think he depends on me at all.

He's a Nazi, a threat to democracy, a criminal, a felon, a rapist, a misogynist and a racist. A person that breaks every rule and only cares about himself.

He faced a "joyful warrior" who could do no wrong, whose only responsibility the last four years was poo-pooed in an effort to convince us she actually had no responsibilities at all -- and that was a good thing. A person who had the media touting her as a representative for all the people despite her record of only caring for the fringe far-left. A person who would transcend all boundaries and check off two new "firsts".

The media loved her, celebrities jumped on stage and told us how helplessly perfect she was... while telling us the alternative was a demon who would ruin our country and lives forever... who would undoubtedly become our first-ever dictator.

And then she got curb-stomped in a landslide.

But you still carry the water. Although you bring forth a valiant effort, I gotta tell you, and maybe they should too, it's not working. All evidence is that it's failed miserably. It's actually done the exact opposite of it's intention.

So, I would say your party needs you much more than Trump needs me. They need you to join hands with them and meander in the desert for the next forty years. Because the population of people willing to co-sign for more of that is waning, at a near-insurmountable rate.

I say keep up the good work, in fact, I urge you to do so. Truth be told, Trump probably needs you way more than he needs me. thumbsup

Actually I think the Democrats did a terrible job at messaging. They allowed the falsehood to continue that the global economy which effected 179 countries was somehow only an American problem that was the Biden administrations fault.

As far as the immigration issue is concerned, nobody was saying Kamala had no responsibility. They just allowed the lie to continue as to what those responsibilities actually were.

And I still haven't seen where a vice president is the one who sets policy in any administration. Last time I checked the job of the vice president is at assist the president and support him as second in charge.

Somehow you have decided to think that was some huge misrepresentation. But it's not. And yes, the democrats do cater far too much to the fringe and don't spend the time and effort sending the message to the common, every day American.

Is that what you call carrying the water?

Carrying the water is the not stop demonization of the other side and painting a picture of doom that never comes to pass. I would think you would know that, and at this point would think you would understand how helplessly futile it is. But they will tell you it's the right move, and you still oblige. It's becoming rather bizarre to watch at this juncture. Not necessarily you as much as the whole charade.

Posting the crazy things trump says and does is news worthy. It's not my fault he does it non stop. No matter how you try to twist it in order to blame others for the words and actions of that buffoon.

I plainly stated that there was no good choice in this election. But some of the stupid things that continue to flow from his mouth and the things he threatens to do once he's sworn in isn't a me issue. That isn't a charade.

That's you among others using some feeble attempt at deflection. The only reason some of you call it demonization is because you refuse to admit what it actually is. It's what the man who will be president is actually spewing out of his pie hole. As you try to blame the people who post it.

Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump expressed satisfaction with Meta's move, and when asked if he believed it was a response to his threats against Zuckerberg, responded: "Probably, yeah."

https://www.barrons.com/news/trump-...robably-response-to-his-threats-c5c592b1

For some people it's as though it only matters which party in government is applying the pressure or in this case making threats.

Ahhh... Zuckerberg is lying because he's afraid of Trump. Got it.

A reasonable explanation would be that he's speaking up and moving forward now that he knows no repercussions can be imposed. I guess that would make too much sense though. If the shoe were on the other foot, I'd imagine this above would be called a conspiracy theory. I'll just call it "Friday".

No, I believe Zuch… BUT I AGREE WITH THE BIDEN ADMIN. Having MAGA family die during the pandemic, I know what misinformation can do… It cost me 2 cousins and a cousins husband and an uncle who was old and ill, post covid complications got him. And an aunt I love very much has permanent brain-fog issues and breathing. All were 50+ at least… But anyone downplaying the misinformation damage is way off any sort of factual base.

So when they were trying to save lives, I wouldn’t have cared if they shut down all the social sites spreading that crap.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

You two are incredibly dense.

Nobody is supporting "misinformation", except when it pertains to a (p)resident who had lost his marbles and the whole WH and media who said he was "sharp as a tack". In that case, you all said simply implying that was "misinformation". Wrap your mind around the irony there.

Zuckerberg said the pushback from his company was because they were refusing to take down things that were verifiably true. Refusing to strike away things that were mere humor. Refusing to take down language that there may be side effects from an unproven vaccine. For that, Biden told the world they were basically killing people and investigations began.

Maybe that's your America, it's not mine.

Facts are not misinformation, no matter how much you say they are. People that are dumb enough to believe everything they read on the internet are responsible for their own consequences.

If we dumb down every subject to the lowest common denominator, there will be no productive exchange of ideas. That seems to be the type of world you two favor -- but only when it fits your bias.

You can drown yourself in all the bs koolaid you wanna gulp. Trump and MAGA are a cancer on America. Dense? No my man, trump dolts believe alt facts. I struggle with the stupidity it takes to be a right winger. All the mental gymnastics employed to get around truth and reality AMAZES ME. It’s like talking to the braindead. That’s why I chose to be less hug it out and more calling out the idiocy of the right. But do go on… I enjoy these post backhands you seem to crave. But I admit picking on y’all is effortless and tiring. This is why I stay away for days at a time. This rehashing effort to whitewash Trump is a fools errand. And it disgusts me to my core.
